yeah.... something pretty much 'in the way' most the time, or fussing with the arm a lot pushing it out of the way and then back in place each time i use it, inevitebly banging my hands on it as i reach for a different keyboard while gaming or something LOL ...

#

sadly the 'software' route is usually the biggest pain because so many in-game voice chat dont HAVE the options to set things properly for gain and gates 😦 ... OBS does, but thats only for streaming.

sharp oasis
#

Damnnn

charred pewter
#

so basically ive been looking for a piece of hardware that does a good job itself isolating what it picks up .... which is something im seeing just doesnt exist

sharp oasis
#

So I'd just have to have luck with a 14700K

twin dew
#

Need Hynix 16Gb A-die or Hynix 24Gb M-die.
Good enough MB.
And luck on the CPU memory controller silicon lottery.

#

With 2 slot MB making it much more likely to work.

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

huh?

dire igloo
#

Idk how to set this up, that's just what I know and what that audio engineer I mentioned told me

sharp oasis
charred pewter
#

so like it shows up as a device to choose ? but its really routing through OBS

dire igloo
sharp oasis
#

Yep

twin dew
dire igloo

Kinda like virtualcam

But for mics

Unless the dummy is optimized for the specific combo of CPU, MB and RAM.

dire igloo

#

Or has active compensation tuning, like the CPU IMC and the RAM have.

#

I'm assuming ddr5 uses daisy chain topology

charred pewter
#

two convos going on, i'll step out of my audio rants for now 🙂

twin dew
tough owl
sharp oasis
twin dew
#

No, Daisy is better for 1 DIMM per channel, with 2 slots.
T is better for 2 DIMMs per channel.

sharp oasis
#

Yeah

#

Isint T topology a trace per slot or something

twin dew
#

No, in Daisy the traces go from IMC to first slot, to second slot.
In T, the traces go from IMC to between the two slots to both slots.

#

So that the trace lenghts between the split-off point and the two slots are identical.

sharp oasis
#

Oh

#

So it looks like a T

twin dew
#

Yes

sharp oasis
#

Ahh nvm I see how that's basically no help here

#

Unless I were to try to do like 6000mhz on 4 sticks

twin dew
#

So optimized for both slots used, but cause worse reflections with just one populated.

#

With daisy chain you leave the first slot unpopulated when with just one slot in use.

#

The one in the middle.

sharp oasis
#

So that's why my X570 goes from a stable ram tune to unstable if I remove two sticks

stiff veldt

i just bought the game and want to play with friends, but i can't join him nor he can join me. I have tried copy the ID or send invitation by steam, but none of them working, can somebody help me?

@twin dew Would you plug in poe injector with a built-in surge protector into an extension cord? Some people say it's safe as long as extension cord is overloaded while Google screams plugging any kind of device with a built-in surge protector into an extension cord is a disaster waiting to happen jace_smile

#

Basically this

twin dew
#

Surge protectors just cause a short in case there is high enough overvoltage.
And those are so short duration that the cabling will not have time to heat up from the short.
Or the breaker would trip anyways.

#

So in normal usage situation, no difference.
In overvoltage situation, tiny bit of theoretical difference.
And often the extra cabling makes the surge protector actually work better.

#

As the voltage spike isn't as high or quick.

#

But in theory if the protection device breaks into short type fault, but not high amperage enough to trip the breaker, then you can in theory burn the extension cord.
But without the extension, you would burn the in-wall wiring instead.

#

And every quality computer PSU etc. has a MOV (surge protector component) in them etc. now.

#

I have absolutely no idea where the "don't plug anything with surge arrestor behind extension cord" comes from.

visual tree
#

And I was worried I won't be able to power U6+ because If I plug in PoE adapter into an extension cord, It might pose a huge safety risk 😅

#

Thanks btw 👍

twin dew
#

Surge arrestors are just components that conduct as little as possible while the voltage is low, and conduct as perfectly as possible when voltage is high, with specific threshold voltage you select based on need (with the change then happening from the startpoint until some higher endpoint).
And then you select how high current and energy pulse you want to be able to dissipate before the component overheats and fails.

#

MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) is the most common for higher energy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varistor
And then for faster response time, but much less max current and energy there are specific types of diodes.

A varistor (a.k.a. voltage-dependent resistor (VDR)) is a surge protecting electronic component with an electrical resistance that varies with the applied voltage. It has a nonlinear, non-ohmic current–voltage characteristic that is similar to that of a diode. Unlike a diode however, it has the same characteristic for both directions of traversi...

Wish my breaker box had more space so electrician could install surge protector instead of buying individual surge protector for each outlet

#

#

Oh wait, I think I just answered my own question jacelul . If you installed this in a breaker box, then you couldn't plug in a device with built-in surge protector on any wall outlet according to Google

#

Which means Google is wrong hehe

twin dew
#

Just remembered that many of the "if you use our surge arrestor, we will replace damaged hardware" warranties specify that the specific surge arrestor must be plugged directly to the wall.
But that is corporate ass-covering, as that is the only case they can test.
And it will also weed out some who didn't read the fine print so less costs.

# soft bloom But like some PSU have only one dual cable

That "don't use the pigtail" is GPU maker ass-covering.
As some crap PSUs couldn't do that safely, as they use too crappy pins and too thin cables.
Any proper PSU doesn't care, even modular ones.
As the PSU side connector pins they use can do 600W safely and the wire gauge is thick enough for the same.

#

But some other one might only use pins and wire that can do 200W.

#

Any 3D print specialist here? Have some stringing issues on tiny letter&number parts which have about ø1.0mm vertical pins. I was recommended using online g-code generator with variable rectraction/temperature/speed settings. Any experience?

edgy hazel
#

I don't recommend using online tools for that. This stuff is usually pretty intense so online services will take shortcuts. Use cura or something.
Also that's a huge amount of stringing. Reduce temp by 5-10C and speed by maybe 10mm/s. Maybe increase the retraction by a lot (5-6mm)

tribal kraken
#

At the moment I am using Cura but also Prusaslicer is an option. But with code generator you could have multiple settings tested in single print rather than making new program for every change in Cura. For temp I'am already down to 180°C from 200

#

Retraction was Cura default 5mm with 45mm/s

edgy hazel
#

Are you printing PLA?

#

180 is too low for that. You need at least 190. Try enabling Z-Hopping and increase the retraction speed, also reduce the overall print and travel speed.

mental oriole
#

Should cost most to nothing.

twin dew
#

Probably just looked that it was the most common used one and tried to upsell.

#

And the fixed costs for SMS system are probably way above the other ones.
As you need the contracts in each region, even if the price is fixed without limit on number of SMSes.

dire igloo
#

Another thing to note: SMS is pretty insecure, it's recommended to not use it for 2FA

twin dew
#

Yup.
Both insecure as in being able to be redirected or listened to.
Or just SIM swap attacks because you only need one mobile operator support person who gets tricked.

#

Or is part of the group.

So in some cases SMS account reset verification is worse than not being there.

mental oriole
charred pewter
#

exactly

#

this shitfuck of a key provider service known as ExertisZtorm, has changed their 'return policy' that once a key is revealed to a customer, the key cannot be returned/refunded

#

its a background service that MANY merchants out there use

#

fanatical, greenman etc

#

so for them to pull this shit against merchants... is going to have trickle down effect on customers i betcha

#

g2a is graymarket ... keys dont come from the publishers

#

and all fraud gained keys from legit merchants, usually end up for sale on the graymarket lol ... which is why its important for legit merchants to be ALLOWED TO RETURN A KEY that ended up being bought with stolen CC/PayPal etc

#

yup

#

you buy something off a graymarket site, key works at first, but then a week down the line steam pulls it .... yup, key was stolen from somewhere that returned the key back to publisher

#

with all our direct publishers (the ones who dont use that stupid ztorm service)... we send keys back immediately when they are detected as fraud (chargebacks, paypal unauth disputes), and they accept and revoke them off steam

#

is lame

#

i wish steam would just make direct activation already ... end 'keys', which would end the graymarket entirely

#

ubisoft went direct activation... no more keys ... but then they renegged and went back to steam ...

#

vs giving 0% to the publishers?

#

buying from graymarket, that money goes 100% to whomever is selling it on there

#

actually steam gets nothing for 'keys' sold ... so if a publisher/dev partners with a store, and provides keys to the store to sell ... steam gets 0%

#

depending on the store, the publisher could get anywhere from 70-85% ...

#

steam didnt like seeing so many keys sold ... so they started to impose key amount restrictions

#

and have made it very difficult to publishers/developers

#

larger publishers just pull the 'threaten card' ... since they have weight, they demand higher cut, and merchants/steam have to fold or never sell

#

but in the end ... steam is a delivery platform that has costs to maintain all of that, and if publishers dont want to pay for that service, they are forced to make their own services........ and we end up with "Bethesda Launcher" and "Rockstar Launcher" and "Ubisoft Connect" .... lol

#

Telltale tried to make their own delivery service .... it basically ended that company

#

and EA Online is overthere doing its own bullshit thing

#

however until another company can actually provide a quality service for downloads .... steam will be main

#

amazon tried to get in on it, but i dont think its taking off... pc people are like "what? download my game from amazon, huh?"

heh

I am in the process of resetting my passwords. Sometimes, you get send a security code to your email. Using Apple mail.app + Safari fills in the code automatically once the e-mail is received. Really neat feature. 👍

#

Also, I didn't know Apple had built in a "ihavebeenpwn" into their password manager 😒

#

They really should let people know, since the data is send over the internet. Atleast KeePassXC gives warning before you check if you are pwned. Telling you of the risks.

#

So one 👍 and one 👎 for apple.

edgy hazel
night girder
#

Yes, but IP and amount of passwords are still public.

edgy hazel
#

that helps nobody

night girder
#

Bro, it's a warning in KeepassXC

#

you think they add it for fun and giggles? All I said was: Apple should tell it's users.

#

It's also a feature for iphones, what if they are on public network?

edgy hazel

because it doesn't matter.

ouch

night girder

I never said Apple should stop doing this. Or remove this feature.

#

They need to be transparant about it and give an option for people to opt-out of this feature.

#

And atleast tell people for fucks sake. We just had a million DB leak a few days ago.

legally you did agree that you read it

#

you want more pop-ups?

night girder
#

KeepassXC gives warning out of the box before using the feature. And KeepassXC didn't enable it out of the box.

#

Apple hides some shit in their agreements, which almost no one reads, and has the feature enabled by default.

#

One is a billion company. The other is open-source.

#

Don't tell me things can't be different when one (keepassXC) just proofs how to do it right.

#

And don't 💣 tell me not to think about security (the paranoid statement you made), while the whole point of a password manager is added security.

edgy hazel

the options are either: have a pp-up for every single small thing or just enable it because it's way better for 99.999% of the population and maybe that 0.001% of paranoid people might not like it

edgy hazel
#

pfSense is a firewall/router computer software distribution based on FreeBSD

night girder
#

the problem is, if you refresh the passwords, you gotta reprint it and put it in the vault hehe

jagged snow
#

I had an interesting thought
Would it be feasible to circulate a malicious password manager, then suddenly change your encryption and ransom people to get their passwords back?

jagged snow

hehe
You wouldn't be able to ask much, since people could just go through and use the forgot my password on every single account to reset it

edgy hazel
night girder
#

What was that hack a while back? In open source. Ah, XZ?. So, I read someone weas bug hunting and found a few suspicious lines. And that led to us being aware of malware in xz.

jagged snow
#

Yup, more or less

#

Somebody noticed that the preliminaries for the attack that had been placed in the utility were slowing down ssh authentication and decided to investigate

So, in a sense, open source does work. As in, someone spotted a security issue. But on the other hand, it got in because of open source ...

🤷‍♂️

edgy hazel
#

shit is hashed and salted and goes via https. Nobody is cracking that shit

night girder
tough owl
#

what did they get from the breach

#

was it just that they had access to lastpass servers or did they have access to passwords too?

night girder
#

What is the more juicy target for a hacker? Cloud DB full of passwords? Or one local db of some random person on the internet 😂

#

LastPass has a doozy of an updated announcement about a recent data breach: the company — which promises to keep all your passwords in one, secure place — is now saying that hackers were able to “copy a backup of customer vault data,” meaning they theoretically now have access to all those passwords if they can crack the stolen vaults.
