soft bloom
#

idea is that i take DF i downloaded and ensure its in desired format:
take timestamps from it, take event IDs, and only then everything else.
thing about timestamps is that they need to be there, they need to be in correct dtype, and later will use it for sorting.
thing about event IDs is that they need to be there, they need to be integers, and unique.

#

so that's why these two where inserted in a more manual fashion, instead of iterating over desired column list.
and, now that is changed order, it seems to be working...

mental oriole
#

Strange. Better add a comment about ordering of columns if it's really that important. I'm guessing one column eating into data for another column somehow, assuming the dataframe has a fixed size.

soft bloom
#

and what's even weirder:

  • it only occured on this larger dataset
  • type enforcing operations that i slapped here earlier didn't help (or they did only temporarily)
  • they ^ didn't raise any error when failed to change type
  • actual erorr that i was seeing was because data convertion to float introduced NaN values, which where problematic
  • i waguely recall trying to debug it earlier and spotting shift in the order of that float column (compared to int)... just by 1 row forward.

seems like some edge condition. have a thing for them. just like that bug in python 3.6.1 when asyncio was just a fresh addition

soft bloom
#

ok, maybe it does. in a way

#

i recall pandas making changes in the way it manages memory. maybe, just maybe, i hit some sort of limit with my data which makes it screw with data

#

which is definitely not a hard limit. some softer kind

#

cause i know it can grow much much larger

mental oriole
#

For sure. I'm just speculating here. Best of luck though.

Sam Bankman-Fried - also known as SBF - has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for stealing billions of dollars from customers of his cryptocurrency exchange FTX.

The former billionaire CEO faces decades in prison for fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from his role in the collapse of FTX.

Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried took more than $10b...

#

Moving back to channel 1 until someone makes a mess again...

twin dew
#

Because people don't know about channel overlap and set their AP:s to "unused" channels in between.
And then the people who force the 40MHz channel use.

#

I have absolutely no idea why the original spec had 5MHz channel interleave when the actual bandwidth was 20MHz...

visual tree
#

Few days ago, I used wifi analyzer in one room and thought I had decent 2.4 ghz

#

Until I moved to another room and did the scan again...

twin dew

But that -80dB shouldn't affect anything AFAIK.

So only one of the other APs is close enough to matter.

visual tree

U6+ should arrive next week since my router wifi is bad

I prefer separate AP and router since all-in-one combo is not a good solution imo

night girder
#

Most just get installed, configured and controlled by ISP.

twin dew
#

And the bad days when those fucked up are about 10 years ago.
Anything newer uses only channels 1, 6, 11 and 20MHz channels.

night girder
#

Hell, I barely have control over it. Which annoys me. So I could bridge and do my own router. But the average citizen doesn't know all this.

twin dew
#

As in N-max APs and before often used all channels, not just 1, 6, 11.
And N APs often used 40MHz channels always.
But AC and newer are AFAIK actually have correctly working firmwares in that sense.

Normal people consider bad neighbour someone who is being rude to everyone else. In the tech community, a bad neighbour is someone who uses 40 MHz on wifi jacelul

Now AI is going to even troll people with deepfakes, what can go wrong

Oh, even less trust in society πŸ˜„

The generated voice is really good although you could hear some static if you listen really carefully but It's getting harder to detect with each day

night girder

A christian party used AI to bring back a dead politician for a TV commercial πŸ˜’

visual tree
#

That is so disrespectful

night girder
#

Yeah, I don't like it either.

#

Does this means this can happen to any of us?

#

That if they find a video of us on the internet, and we are dead, they can use that video to create AI version of us, then create commercials.

#

Win-win, you don't have to pay a dead person to use their "footage"?

visual tree
#

As long as there are enough pictures and voice samples available publicly, you could make a deepfake of that person

Not sure if you could make a proper deepfake with only a single picture of the person

it's weird, I don't know

#

will get worse before it get better that's for sure

tough owl
twin dew
#

Ah, normal PCIe half-height card.

#

If there is, MUX chips over PCIe 3.0 cost shitton, and so will the card.
And you need MUX on the card if you don't need bifurbication from the MB.

#

The company making cheap PCIe MUXes got bought and the prices increased to only be viable for server/professional market.

#

Which is why we went from lot of MBs having PCIe MUXes to get more lanes to only few top end boards having them.

tough owl
#

We love proprietary expensive components

twin dew
#

Just PCIe switch.
Anyone can in theory design and get one procuced, but the designign cost shitton and the market is smallish.

#

And there was only one company doing that for low unit price.

twin dew
#

SMS is data.
VoLTE is because while 2G and 3G have separate voice mode that is "circuit switched", 4G and 5G don't and can only do packet data.

#

So to have voice over them, you need to use IP phone protocols.

#

And the providers couldn't just do that over normal VoIP pΓ₯rotocol, they had to make separate fork of that.

#

To not be just data carriers.

#

So VoLTE is VoIP that was bastardized to fix you to your data provider for the voice too.

#

Just any data network.

#

With same radio tech, you can always have longer range at slower speed.
So no, if someone bothered to make better 2G base station.

#

Unless 2G had some timing spec that limits range.
4G has that as about 100km?

#

Ok, original GSM had 35km max range because of such limit.

#

So yes, because of bad spec in 2G for TA max, it has pretty short max range.

#

Various analog mobile techs.
2G is first digital ones like GSM and CDMA.

#

With the 1G name for the previous analog ones being retroactive.

#

And then 3G was UMTS (GSM side) and CDMA2000 (CDMA side).

#

And CDMA never got 4G version, just switched to LTE too.

#

Which is mostly GSM side, with some CDMA side thrown in.

#

IIRC

#

Not really?
Two separate network standards, both which then got various upgrades, until they got merged with LTE and later to one standard.

#

Up to that point your provider supported one or the other, and same for your phone (some dual standard phones around)

And most countries had one or the other.
With US having both, depending on provider.

Oh god... the base unit PDF uses is 1/72th of an inch...

So 1.6 and up that UserUnit can be changed as Float.
And then the page size is again Integer (or Float?) of those...

So in theory the largest size you can specify for the "page physical size" is 1/72" * Float-Max * Float-Max.
And the size of Float is left as non-specified and to be architecture specific, but recommendation is to limit to 32bit ones for compatibility.

soft bloom
#

Laso you often get recovery codes

#

Even steam has 2fa

stray badger
#

also, gh auth login encrypts auth data by default now

#

git credential manager requires setup on linux to do the same thing

midnight osprey
#

My old one last pass never had such fields for storing info.

twin dew
#

Those are something you want to usually store as paper.

#

Not in same place as the password, as that makes the 2FA useless if the PW DB leaks.

midnight osprey
#

Indeed

wanton orchid
stray badger
#

I have never used git apply

#

So idk

wanton orchid
#

looks like very inconsistent to me
when you "apply" patch, you are affecting files
as with any other tools
why would you it affect branches and whole project snapshots instead of using things like "git merge" for that instead

twin dew
#

This command applies the patch but does not create a commit. Use git-am[1] to create commits from patches generated by git-format-patch[1] and/or received by email.

wanton orchid
#

you probably don't have anything to do about that
but wanted to share how inconsistent it looks to me

wanton orchid
#

that is buggy behavior to me

#

what you just quoted is what I was expecting

#

but what I experienced does not match that

twin dew
#

Because without commit there isn't branching in a way, it is editing the base file that all the branches etc. depend on without normal change logging.

#

As WAG

wanton orchid
#

the whole project files definition is a stream of commits
when you apply patch that goes in-between it can not just edit "base files"
as preceding commit depend on these

#

So it just breaks everything

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Password Database leaks.

#

Which is what I said.

soft bloom
#

point of password managers is to stora complex passwords
complex unique passwords guard you against someone hacking you once your password got leaked.
but managing a bunch of long unique passwords is hard without some kind of manager, but that's and independant service.
2fa completely guards you from password problems, but you still need to store that data somewhere, as well as reovery codes.
recovery codes prevent you being locked out if you happened to loose totp

twin dew
#

As in if someone gets their hands on the PW DB data, they would get the 2FA at same time.

#

So the 2FA would be useless.

#

If the TOTP or the recovery codes are in the same app.

wanton orchid
#

looking at the documentation for gitapply
it MUST behave as I said it should already
so this feels like a big bug
where git stops tracking files changes when using git apply

soft bloom
#

password manager with 2fa is still better than short reused password without 2fa

wanton orchid
#

(when you change branches, git is usually inspecting tree changes and tells you "hold on a second, those changes aren't committed : revert/commit ?")

soft bloom
wanton orchid
#

and format-patch should be aware of these changes too
but nor format patch nor git diff gives any output after git apply

#

fucked up

soft bloom
#

but yes its way less than actually storing them separately

#

still not sure if there's redemption in making circular dependencies...

#

because if any accaount is hacked than they could seuqntually unlock everything

wanton orchid
#

2fa is supposed to use stable sources for validation
if these leaks it does not means these are compromised

#

like if you leak your phone number
does not means that sending you authentication code on your phone is compromised

#

I may be completely off topic
but wanted to sort that out just in case

soft bloom
twin dew
#

2FA is just key for specific algorithm, if the information leaks, anyone can set up the same 2FA TOTP in another app.
And if the recovery keys leak, they can be used to reset the account PW and 2FA.

#

TOTP is just way to generate one-time keys based on time and secret.

wanton orchid
#

"if the recovery key .." then it's not 2fa
it's single [recovery] key

soft bloom
soft bloom
wanton orchid
#

seems like there are so many retards in the security field

twin dew
#

But the point was if the recovery keys, or the TOTP secret are in the PW DB that someone got access to.

soft bloom
#

there's also a flavor of 2fa using sms/email OTP, and even stupid google's "yes" button

twin dew
#

Which was what started the talk.

#

Saving the recovery codes in PW manager.

wanton orchid
#

it's like saving clear text password is what I mean

#

-> dumb

soft bloom
#

gogole sounds like legit company making ai art

twin dew
#

Point was that you DON'T want PW manager that has TOTP functionality.
And you don't want to save the recovery codes in the manager either.

soft bloom
#

i mean... you should avoid doing that.
but this case is still better than not using 2fa at all (for any specific account)

Better news sources seem to say only one 7.2 one.

So 7.7 according to Japanese, 7.4 according to US and 7.2 according to Taiwanese monitoring agencies.

So both humanitarian problem, and chip shortages coming.

Ceo says its because of bad decision’s.

twin dew
#

So if all the Taiwan fabs are down for a month for example to fix and reverify after the quake, no-one will move their production to Intel fabs.

#

The PR node name numbers are not comparable.

#

Intel has named their nodes more conservatively than TSMC for 10+ years.
Their 10nm was comparable to TSMC 7nm, and in many aspects better.

#

For the actual area efficiency for actual circuits.

#

TSMC N7 has 40nm between metal wires, Intel 10nm has 36nm for example.

#

Intel reports a density of 100.76MTr/mm2 (mega-transistor per squared millimetre) for its 10nm process, while TSMC's 7nm process is said to land a little behind at 91.2MTr/mm2

#

But currently TSMC is in lead, as Intel fucked up with that 10nm for so long, and the "Intel 7" is just minorly improved "Intel 10nm"

#

Because they tried to make the switch to 10nm too giant leap.

#

They tried to jump over a node size in a way, and that was step too far.
And had made many of the senior people get severance and leave the company "to save costs"

#

So too giant leap, and the experienced engineers had left to save costs.

#

No, just MBAitis causing the engineering resources actually available not match what was attempted.

#

Causing delay after delay when the stuff didn't work.

#

Which cost much more than it would have done right.

#

Intel just before the 10nm design process started giant program to get rid of the senior engineering people to "save costs", by offering giant severance packages for people leaving voluntarely.

#

As the normal MBA think that the junior engineers just entering the company are just as good as the people who have worked there for 20+ years, just much cheaper.

#

And then try to do the largest node jump in a long while...

#

They are getting back on track now.

#

Time will tell if the leadership learned that MBA-school doesn't teach that much about real world.

#

And in actual skilled trades, the people aren't just replaceable identical machines.

quasi citrus
#

I don't feel any sympathy to those in management that sympathised with this idea in the first place

twin dew
#

MBA was supposed to be something that people from other tracks went to when they were promoted to management, to get management skills in addition what they already knew.
But now you have so many MBA-only managers, that have been taught that "they know best" and experts are losers.

#

And that only way to future is to cut costs, etc.

quasi citrus
#

To save money you need efficient processes. To get efficient processes you need to understand the process before messing around in them or with those executing them

twin dew
#

But they haven't often been taught that XD

quasi citrus
twin dew
#

Nah, often they are taught that every place can run with same process.
No matter in what kind of company you are in or who you are managing...
From coders to factory floor etc.

#

"You don't need to understand what your underlings do, you are a manager and you decide how they do it"

Lets just say the contents of the courses have gotten somewhat "corrupted" over time.

But in a way that is just money shuffling between units.
The Foundry side not charging the CPU side enough per wafer.

#

Making the CPU etc. side numbers seem better.

#

The actual fuckup is that need to use TSMC to produce some chips as their own foundries are too behind on tech.

#

Latest being that try to not use EUV and just old tech for too small nodes.

#

Which probably caused very bad yields.

night girder

Well they lost 5% stock just today because of news

twin dew

Stock price doesn't actually affect the companies at all, except when they issue new stock for money.
The managers etc. do care because of stock form bonuses.

night girder
#

Big doubts…

#

I think they care. Since they need billions to invest.

twin dew
#

Stock is about ownership.
Only time the actual company gets money when stock is sold is when THEY sell.
So IPO and and later "lets sell more stock to get money" times.
It can in some way affect bank loans, if the company owns some of their own stock and uses that as collateral.
But classically companies didn't own their own stock.

#

Stock buybacks were for long time mostly illegal.

night girder

The price going down means people are selling their intel stock to get rid of it.

Not Intel.

twin dew

Stock price is indicator how investors value the company.

night girder
twin dew
#

Selling stock is the way to get money, when you issue new stock.

night girder
#

Why would a company go on the market if it had no benefits of stocks. Makes no sense.

twin dew
#

But last time Intel issued new stock is ages ago.

#

The current "stock price and market cap are everything" are pretty new intentional distortion made by specific right-wing "economists" in '60-80s.

#

Stock price increases don't give money to the company the stock belongs to.

#

And decreases don't remove money from them.

night girder
#

No, but it’s value goes up and down. This does impact other things.

#

Again, don’t downplay stocks. It does have effects.

twin dew
#

It affects the stock owners.
Not the company.
But as the leadership team is often significant stock owner itself...
And in theory the stockowners are the ones who select that leadership team.

night girder
#

Else it wouldn’t be news either.

twin dew
#

Like I said, the market has been intentionally distorted over time.

night girder
#

β€œThe impact of stock prices on company performance can be both positive and negative. For example, if a company's stock price goes up, it may be able to raise more capital and expand its operations. On the other hand, if a company's stock price goes down, it may have to lay off workers or cut back on its operations.” - google

twin dew
#

Only if it owns some of its own stock and uses it as collateral for loans for example.
Second is usually just leadership trying to do shit that would make the stock price go up again.

#

Or if they intend to sell more stock to get more money.
In that case the stock price determines how much stock do they have to sell, to get specific amount of money.
And selling more stock causes there be more stock around, which waters down the price of each one.

#

But problem is that the distortion on what stock market actually does has been going for 50+ years now.
So the distorted view is the "META".

#

And as it is what gives the rich more control, they like it.

night girder

πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

#

Anyways, the guy behind that, and republican clique of similar thinkers have caused SO much damage over time...

#

But that was the whole point, to make it easier for rich to get richer.

#

Economists in a sense that they first selected the policy target based on ideology, and then built "foundation" and reasoning for that, then released as economic theory.

#

So politics disguised as science, like much of "economic theory" over the years.

#

Basically the whole "school" of science is has been completely rotten for very long time and doesn't follow scientific method at all.

#

And the same rot has entered other fields as result of the changed in how funding is assigned etc.

dire igloo
