It's apparently hot-swappable so I can at least get my clicky blues again

night girder
#

should be yes

#

My first keychron had faults printed in the keycaps, black speckles.

#

I send an e-mail to them, asking if they could replace one keycap.

#

They send me a whole set of keycaps πŸ˜‚

#

Support: πŸ’―

languid gulch
#

yea this is the first keyboard withe keycaps that are removable for maintenance reasons

languid gulch
#

hexgears X5

#

oh i meant for me

#

never had a keycap puller before 🀣

night girder
#

haha πŸ˜„

#

I mean my corsair is still ok, some RGB leds are fucked up. And some keys are broken, they come off when I turn my keyboard upside down.

#

I probably smashed them too hard when I was frustrated with some game.

#

F4 key is broken for example. ALT + F4 rage quitting πŸ˜‚

languid gulch
#

i mean, i'm old enough to remember the days when keyboards were built tough enough that you could probably bludgeon someone to death with it, just too young to have cared about that kind of thing at the time

night girder
#

PCB keyboard yes.

languid gulch
#

i keep waiting for keyboards & mice to have VR integration, with built-in location/orientation & activation on screen

night girder
#

someone I know games on a 10-20 dollar PCB keyboard. Last him already 10+ years πŸ˜›

languid gulch
#

it definitely has a specific feel to it

#

like working in a 80s era missile silo

night girder
#

he loved it. He didn't understand why I spend so much on a keyboard.

languid gulch
#

because you like having functional wrists & fingers

edgy hazel
#

I have 13 keys on my g513 which have a dead blue LED

#

And today it died for 2 hours

#

This mf going to a farm

night girder
languid gulch
#

i'd rather the keyboard break sooner than my arms, it's cheaper to replace

dusk rivet
#

what’s the worst that could happen?

#

burn down your entire house? thats what home insurance is for

sterile plinth
edgy hazel
#

Bro don't buy electronics from aliexpress...

dusk rivet
#

ali express is a great place for crappy plastic things that don’t have a strong possibility of combustion

#

not so great for things that have a strong possibility of combustion

twin dew
#

Not really worth it when reputable one is about $20.

dusk rivet
#

not lighting my house on fire is definitely worth 20 usd

night girder
#

This looks silly πŸ™ƒ

#

So 9 euro for filter. 5 euros for male. 7 euros for female. And the pistol I already had.

edgy hazel

🀨

#

Pressurised air often has oil in it, and that needs to be removed for some uses.

#

From the compressor lubrication.

night girder
#

I have compressor without oil, but that doesn't mean there is no water in the air.

#

only problem is that there is a leak between female and male (lower connection)

charred pewter
sterile plinth
charred pewter
#

lol

night girder
#

Baldur, you think screw thread tape might help?

jagged snow
#

It should
Teflon tape is a must when you're doing pneumatic stuff

#

I've never threaded a connection without it that didn't leak

night girder
#

If you look at my first picture, the bottom part is screwed on the filter.

#

that is leaking air, I can see little hydro bubbles forming.

#

and ofcourse I feel the air on my hand too.

#

I'll buy that then.

#

I am a bit surprised how much liquid is already in the filter πŸ˜’

jagged snow
#

Compressing and decompressing air really does cause a lot of condensation to form

night girder
charred pewter
#

again, its NOT AI damnit .... sigh

jagged snow
#

Yeah
I really hate that neural networks have been rebranded as something with a completely different definition than what they are

night girder
#

steam is also going to allow AI games (read that yesterday).

#

But studio's have to give a warning that AI is being used to generate content in the games.

#

With this being the main gist of it.

jagged snow
#

They're also calling it ai πŸ—Ώ

charred pewter
#

and i honestly have no issue with games that use ai generated content. just like i have no issues with games with esrb of M, or games that have blood

#

so long as the game is fun enough, i'll buy and play it

jagged snow
#

I've been playing the finals a lot lately and I've really enjoyed it

#

The generated voices are actually just really cool

charred pewter
#

i honestly believe the "Metro" games woulda been much better with AI generated voice acting instead of whomever they hired

night girder
#

you cannot call it anything else, because then people will be confused.

#

Also, image, live generated "AI" content in games. What can go wrong hehe

#

Example: what if the adds in a city, are AI generated. Think cyberpunk. But cyberpunk adds are highly sexual, so if AI has to generate "sexual adds" ... oh boy oh boy

jagged snow
#

Oh yeah, that could never go wrong

charred pewter
#

AI generated random encounters based on the players play behaviors in the game ... that could be interesting

#

cause not all players play a big game (open world) the same way ...

#

some just play on rails, running from waypoint to waypoint of the main story ... some never seem to ever get around to the main story and stay lost forever ...

#

AI generated random encounters could be really interesting in like a MMO setting

#

lol ... AI NFTs in MMOs where people own legit unique items πŸ˜„

#

WHAT COULD GO WRONG

mental oriole
#

Everything hehe

charred pewter
#

Anything, Everywhere

dire igloo
#

At least with Minecraft, you can limit the RNG by having seeds

#

Imagine you try to any% finish the main quest and you keep getting interrupted by side quests shoving themselves into your face

night girder
dusk rivet
#

depends on the category

#

some categories are preset seed, some are random seed

night girder
#

Yeah, was just about to say. They have different categories for it.

#

I mean, if AI/ML/Something can come up with better quests than "Granny is sick, go fetch a potion from the next village". "The fisher has no rod, go to another village to find a rrod for the fisher". I am down for it.

#

Games like AC (generic sandbox where literally nothing makes sense) can benefit a lot from it imo.

#

but still, even if AI comes up with better story. A fetch quest will still be a fetch quest so mhm...

dusk rivet
#

isn’t there an argument that β€œai” like chatgpt isn’t truly β€œai”

night girder
#

what do you think we are on about for years?

charred pewter
#

could be a setting ... if doing a speedrun, just turn off ai content (as ai content is basically just there for people who are actually wanting to spend more time in the game doing something)

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

but maybe it CAN πŸ˜„

night girder
#

You can call it something else, good luck talking to people πŸ‘

#

we traded shitty NFT concept for the "AI" concept.

dire igloo
night girder
#

What will 2024 bring hehe

dire igloo
#

And instead of making it better, it'll turn every npc into chatgpt

charred pewter
#

cloud-sourced ai world generation where it constantly improves the world by watching how players interract in it and get or dont get frustrated πŸ˜„

night girder
#

And they are all AI. Pretty funny video πŸ˜„

charred pewter

an "ever evolving MMO" marketted as such that an AI is going to be constantly making changes to 'everything' lol

#

Sometimes I was actually impressed by the responses (but I think it was coded in, like a demo) and other times, it behaves like expected πŸ˜‚

#

but honestly, I am not hoping for a game where you can have a "real life interaction" with NPC's. I would just go outside if I wanted that.

dire igloo
#

Question is: what's more immersive?
Irrelevant NPCs refusing to talk and saying smth like "I'm busy right now" or "hello hero, wishing you best of luck" - or a ChatGPT style conversation with every NPC you can find

#

If well made, AI can help with games - but then again, if you're doing a great job at world building, you don't really need AI

night girder
#

Game developers: "We want to make as much possible profit, with spending as less time and resources possible. Aha, AI can help us". πŸ‘ˆ I think this is the main reason 99% of game developers are hyped about it. And only 1% is thinking about making an actually innovating game with AI.

charred pewter
#

honestly... i never WANT to talk to every damned NPC that exists in the world....

#

and ones that run up to me out of the blue and want me to do something for them, without any reason for it... just piss me off

night girder
#

if you make a "yo momma joke" you get this response:

charred pewter
#

like in the real world, NO ONE runs up to me and asks "hay can you run over to johnstown and pick up a fishing rob for me?"

night girder
#

I mean, does that feel like a game at this point πŸ˜’

#

It feels like being pulled into the real world. You can't goof around without getting white knighted.

charred pewter
#

thats when i pull out a pistol and shoot the npc

night girder
#

I though games were susposed to be disconnected from real life, so we don't have to think too much about morals and stuff. And go with the flow, a.k.a. have fun.

charred pewter
#

bad enough they preach to us in tv shows now ... i dont want that shit in my games too

night girder
#

but I don't want to get lectured by freaking AI npc's in a game that probably costs 100 euro. Since it's an AI game.

charred pewter
#

+10000

night girder
#

it's fucking code lecturing us how to be decent humans, it's ridiculous πŸ˜‚

charred pewter
#

its a gateway drug for Skynet to justify killing the human race

night girder
#

If this is the future of technology, I am going back to books to have my fair share of escapism.

#

Look, another responses of AI:

#

Kids will be jumping in front of cars after playing games like this πŸ˜‚

dire igloo
dire igloo
night girder
#

and 100% we will not agree on this subject.

dire igloo
#

In fact, it's easier to control the NPCs and their response if you DON'T involve AI

night girder
#

If you want the next GTA 6 being like, I can't blame you.

dire igloo
#

Just think of the Chevrolet customer service chat

night girder
#

but I don't want my games to mimick real life. Real life sucks.

#

You know it's a game right?

#

You can get hookers into your car, drive over them, escape the cops with a tank and not go to court/jail. How far do you want to get with realism in games?

dire igloo
night girder
#

you probably hate GTA hehe

dire igloo
#

If it was realistic, the streets would be crowded and breaking into a parked car much harder

dire igloo
night girder
#

Cannot wait untill AI's in games start to explain to peoeple how to make pipe bombs.

night girder
#

Flipping the finger to people on the street. βœ… Beat up a homeless person βœ… etc etc. It's just a sandbox. If you don't want to do this. Don't. But if you do want to do this, the game allows it. Morals and ethics are not to be found in that game πŸ˜‚

dire igloo
#

iirc they need to tailor for the Chinese market

night girder
#

Like when we are paparazzi and break every privacy law to take pictures of an underage popstar having sex? (GTA 5)

dire igloo
#

And from what I know, they're also very reluctant on making Nazis look good

dire igloo
#

But that's because it's a video game

night girder
#

That's my point the whole time πŸ˜’

#

The video I posted, showed how AI would response in Unreal Engine 5. It's not fun. It's a game. It should be fun.

dire igloo
#

I doubt GTA 6 will have people use the N-word as a slur

night girder
#

I don't know, better also ban the word cracker then.

#

Oh wait, that still get's used daily hehe

dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
night girder
#

you never heard someone calling white people "crackers"? From back of the day, when they cracked the whip?

edgy hazel
night girder
#

I think eddie muprhy used it a lot in his old comedy shows. And dave chappel.

#

Anyway, interesting topic. But not suited for this channel.

dire igloo
dire igloo
night girder
#

πŸ˜’ You don't know who Eddie Muprhy is? OR Dave Chapel. I though they were house hold names.

#

Don't blame you. Just a bit surprised you never heard of em πŸ˜„

dire igloo
#

Eddie Murphy rings a bell, never watched his shows.
Dave Chappelle only for the Musk thing

night girder
#

And Kevin Hart? He is also guilty of using that word.

#

Anyway, the cracker word is as offensive as the N word, they use it to offend white people.

dire igloo
#

But tbh, Dave Chappelle is a cut down version of Kanye West - "I can't be racist, I'm black"

night girder
dire igloo
#

XD

night girder
#

I know how you think Herg, that's why I said cr*cker. And N, to not offend anyone. Anyhow, the C word doesn't offend me tbh. Just somethign I noticed.

night girder
#

Using words to insult someone, or a race, is the same purpose.

dire igloo
night girder
#

Insulting someone is bad. How ever you turn it.

dire igloo
#

Just like artists asking people not to call them talented

night girder
#

Then don't say the C word either.

#

it's a reference to slavery too.

dire igloo
#

Is there a historic reason of it being used to devalue humans?

night girder
#

No. But some people are. And if you apply the logic of the N word to the C word. Then both are bad.

#

And if you don;'t think the C word is bad, then the N word isn't bad.

#

If you think N word is bad, and C word isn't, then I would say: "wtf?"

dire igloo
night girder
#

Then why do so many people of certain culture still use it amongst themself?

dire igloo
#

That's why it's an issue.
That's why the Hard-R is also an issue

#

Because they were used to devalue people

#

Reduce their humanity, justify violence against them

night girder
#

So let me guess this, it's ok to use a racism term like C if you are black.

dire igloo
#

Not based on what they did. But on who they were

night girder
#

And if you are white, you can't say the N word. Got it. One racist word is ok.

#

The other is bad. Cherry picking.

edgy hazel
#

Bro

dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
#

It was used to refer to abusers

night girder
dire igloo
night girder
#

"commonly pejorative" so a slur.

dire igloo
#

One describes the oppressors, one describes the oppressed

dire igloo
night girder
#

I really have no fight to pick here. I just think; ban both words. Or accept both. I don't care. But not this in between.

dire igloo
#

Just because it's a slur doesn't mean it's bad to use it

dire igloo
#

Because clearly you don't seem to care about history or meaning

#

Don't call Germans potatoes, they might find it insulting

night girder
#

It's silly you think the word get's used to compliment us or something πŸ˜‚

#

or as a neutral term.

dire igloo
#

The point is not whether or not it's a slur

night girder
#

While everytime I heard it so far, was faaaar from being a compliment. It was used as an insult.

dire igloo
#

It's whether or not it's okay to be used as a slur

charred pewter
#

for some reason i always thought 'crackers' was just a slurred version of quakers ...

night girder
charred pewter
#

makes more sense

dire igloo
#

No? Then it's not as bad as the N-word.

#

It's a term used to describe violent oppressors

sharp oasis
#

So. I have a veey big thanks for a freind of mine. He is gifting me his 6700XT after he got a 6950XT

night girder
#

Sorry, can't comprehend your logic.

sharp oasis
#

And this is after he sent it in for warranty bc it has the coldplate issue

charred pewter
#

victims vs offenders ... negative words to describe the offenders isnt as bad as negative words to describe victims ...

dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
#

C can't be racist because you can't oppress white people

charred pewter
#

if cracker is to describe a slave owner... well, that could be just about anyone in history

night girder
#

racial epithet

#

wait wait

#

let me help us.

dire igloo
dire igloo
#

But only B is really negative

#

A and C are neutral

night girder
edgy hazel
dire igloo
#

Tell me.
How can you be racist towards white people?

night girder
#

And that's just the intro of the wiki page hehe

night girder
night girder
#

Believing racism is one sided is mindblowing (only white people can be racist?)

dire igloo
#

The fuck are you talking about

charred pewter
#

now if you do put 'white cracker' ... sure, thats racist... but just 'cracker' ? there were african-america slave owners ... so they were crackers (yet black)

dire igloo
#

Apartheid was white racism against non-whites

dire igloo
#

How is that so hard to grasp?

charred pewter
#

its hard not to think some black commedians as being entirely racist against whites

#

giving the shit they say

dire igloo
#

Your prime example for racism against white people was white people being racist against non-whites despite being a minority

night girder
#

I don't need to grasp anything. I just knew a few south africans who told me some stories.

#

And what I learned isn't the same as what you are saying.

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

ive had a racist neighbor ... he was a black guy and absolutely hates any and all "whites" as he calls them. without first giving a person a chance to show him they arnt bad .... he moved away after "being sick of the whites in this area" ...

#

we are a 50/50 town ...

dire igloo
night girder
edgy hazel
charred pewter
#

but then ive also got ANOTHER neighbor, who IS white, and ... well, he is 100% racist too ...

charred pewter
#

he even flies the maga banner

night girder
charred pewter
#

me, i just try to stay out of peoples way ... πŸ™‚

dire igloo
# night girder

Ah yes, because oppressed people turning violent against those that oppress them is racist?

charred pewter
#

anywayysssss ....... tech-talk ? πŸ˜„

#

how did we get here... AI did it

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

lets blame AI for it

night girder
#

Yeah, like I said, I don't need to get white knighted by AI πŸ˜‚

#

This chat will do that. And that's why I don't want it in my games.

charred pewter
#

he even had a good job ... better off than me LOL

#

im sure it was more of a exception to the rule though ... but i run into all kinds around here since its a very diverse/mixed town

dire igloo
night girder
charred pewter

i like PC's

dire igloo
night girder
edgy hazel
charred pewter

im too set in my ways...

but i grew up in an area where racism wasnt a thing, and so it just never sunk in one way or another with me. I guess i suffer from the "whats all the bother? cant we just live and let live" since I was not on either side

dire igloo
charred pewter

but im a little gray alien, its in my nature to violate humans ...

charred pewter
#

its so fun loading up reddit after discussing a few topics in discord servers, and see reddit pick more topics about the same things .... sigh

dire igloo
night girder
#

I think I said this before to you.

#

And I say it again. People are not a hive mind.

charred pewter
#

you know, i was called a racist once for saying i wish there would be at least english subtitles in a game that was going to be russian spoken, because i didnt understand russion. Then they banned me from the steam forum

dire igloo
#

There isn't one true balance, right.

But you should always reflect and decide whether you want to tip the scale towards "treat humans respectfully" or "ignoring history cuz lazy"

night girder
#

You will always insult someone.

#

You will always be a racist to someone.

#

People have different standards etc. Even if it's only 1 person out of the billions we have.

#

Mathematical, you will never be perfect for everyone.

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

ive seen some people get bent out of shape when someone else was trying to be respectful to them ... they took it as being pandered too or mocked

night girder
#

And if you do, you are chasing your own tail.

charred pewter
#

i cant even compliment a woman anymore, so i just dont say anything to anyone out there unless they ask a question first

dire igloo
night girder
#

You will go mute. If that's your goal, have fun. I am NOT doing that.

charred pewter
#

indeed

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

even your pressence can offend someone... or the color of the clothes you are wearing, or not wearing, or even the kind of clothes

night girder
#

I like to be free, like freedom of speech and such. You might not like freedom of speech. But I am a big fan of it still.

dire igloo
edgy hazel
#

freedom of speech is great. hatespeech isn't.

charred pewter
#

so, i just wear whatever, say whatever ... but try not to be obviously offensive to people LOL

dire igloo
night girder
#

And it's so stupid to sayu that to me.

#

Because it goes both ways πŸ˜‰

#

You are trying to tell me, that I am endagering someones freedom with whatever I am saying. While by saying that, you are endagering MY freedom.

dire igloo
edgy hazel
dire igloo
charred pewter
#

you know whats kinda off ... is black people walking up to each other and calling each other the N-word ... in front of non-black children, who pick that up as 'the right thing to say' ...

edgy hazel
dire igloo
dire igloo
night girder
dire igloo
charred pewter
#

you have the freedom to say something stupid, and i have the freedom to tell you are being stupid πŸ˜„

night girder
#

Person A: doesn't like being called fat. Person B: doesn't mind being called fat. Do we ban the word fat?

dire igloo
#

I don't think you can be convicted for the combination of versucht + grob fahrlΓ€ssig

#

How can you attempt being negligent

dire igloo
#

It's socially frowned upon

night girder
#

Ones freedom is endangered, The other one isn't. How do you solve this? And if you say person A is right. Then this is an insane precedent. Because then you have to respect every single individual opinion.

#

Ok, let's say fat isn't banned. By social frowned upon.

edgy hazel
#

Tbh you can say what you want to. What you say will however decide into what circles you get, which communities accept or decline you, what companies want to do business with you and so on.

dire igloo
#

You make it a 1v1 decision

night girder
#

So you saying every single opinion is to be respected*.

dire igloo
#

As you said, you will always offend someone

night girder
#

Man, good luck navigating real life πŸ˜„

dire igloo
#

So we should wonder about a majority

night girder
dire igloo
#

Context matters too in this case.
Being overweight has a negative health impact, so if your doctor teaches you about your body, that's different from people publicly shaming others as fatties

dire igloo
night girder
#

So, let me get this. You have a issue with the N word. But not with calling people fat or C word.

edgy hazel
night girder
#

Holy moly. I would never call someone fat, or the N word or the C word.

dire igloo
#

In Germany, "Beleidigung" (insulting) is a crime - but it'd have to be quite severe

night girder
#

Getting arrested etc πŸ˜‰ That's what I was hinting at.

dire igloo
night girder
#

I have an issue with degrading people. Stop cherry picking!

dire igloo
edgy hazel
#

absolutely. You can say what you want to, but that doesn't mean other have to accept you. Not communities, companies even countries.

dire igloo
night girder
#

Here, I am pretty sure that for somethings I say out loud, I would get instant arrested.

#

Or atleast the cops getting over to hear my story and then fine/arrest me.

dire igloo
dire igloo
night girder
#

and the same goes for the C word, how this discussion started or heated up. imho.

#

and tbf, I am making a point that is coming close to the point you once made about calling people "talented" which I still think is stupid AF, but now I know to only use that word with people who really know me and are my friends. So I know for 99% I don't insult them by calling em talented. I don't agree with it. All you did was make me aware that people are sensitive for it.

dire igloo
night girder
#

on severity? No one racial slur you say: that is bad. But the other racial slur used against whites, that's fine.

dire igloo
night girder
#

how can you decide how severe it is?

dire igloo
#

Racist not just meaning treating someone differently because of it, but actually discriminating against them

dire igloo
night girder
#

Racism isn't a white thing. Racism can happen between any culture. Just open a newspaper.

dire igloo
night girder
#

YOU are the one who think only white people can be racist, afaik.

dire igloo
night girder
#

"You still failed to provide reasoning for how one can be racist towards white people."

jagged snow
#

That statement subverts the definition of racism

dire igloo
#

Because racism has an inherent mismatch of power.
And white people are almost never the weaker part

night girder
#

That just made it sound like that.

dire igloo
#

Your reading comprehension must be dogshit

#

I clarified that earlier

jagged snow
dire igloo
jagged snow
#

Discrimination against whites already exists though...

#

Not to the extent that it does for other skin colors, but it's there πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

dire igloo
night girder
night girder
#

My reading comprehension really sucks.

#

I did link you a wiki screenshot of how white africans are being raped and murdered for being white.

dire igloo
night girder
#

No, but it seemed to imply it.

jagged snow
# dire igloo In what form?

There are plenty of countries around the world where whites are in the minority and are actively mistreated because of their skin color. In the US, whites are denied many opportunities because they're in the majority

dire igloo
night girder
#

just hard for me to speak about these subjects when someone doesn't even know how much racism there is against white people.

jagged snow
#

I actually think I'm just going to leave this convo before the mods get involved...

sharp oasis
#

Racism= racism wether it's black white or any other colour you can be racist if your anyone to anyone. It doesn't only apply to one group. Done. Best solution

dire igloo
#

Yes, I do think some colleges go to far in denying white people

#

But if you said "base it off of their grades or a standardized test" you neglect an entire school system that has been and still is heavily influenced by racism

jagged snow
#

I'm so tired of hearing that line

#

But we should move to a pm group

sharp oasis
#

Agreed

#

Before the mods kill us all

dire igloo
#

Also: steam winter sales ended the 7th right?

#

and a few days later they have a new sale called "Capitalism" ... a bit on the nose.

narrow folio
#

after the Steam sale is before the steam sale

night girder
#

Maybe the winter sales didn't get the expected result hehe If this is the case, I hope they get into a sale limbo.

narrow folio
#

no real reason to buy full price anymore, just wait for the next sale.... except you really neeed it nooow or you want to support for the developer

night girder
#

That's what I do. I bought BG3 for the full price though.

narrow folio
#

BG3 is on my 'when I have time list'

night girder
#

it's on my bucket list too. Not sure if I will ever finish that game. So much to do and explore and ... yeah.

narrow folio
#

1+2 were great games and I like the world a lot

night girder
#

If you are a fan of the previous games, I think you will like this one.

#

Does anyone know how it works when steam have sales? What are the % for steam and developers? Does steam still take 30% even if an item is on sale?

narrow folio
#

I watched some character generations and gameplay, seems like all those awards are earned

night girder
#

So, 30 euro (-50%) discount. Does this mean steam takes 10 euro and the 20 goes to developers? After tax reduction? Or does steam take a smaller % of items that are on sale.

#

because else the proffit for developers shrink even more.

night girder
#

and I notice it in all the small details and references.

narrow folio
#

I heard (no real source) that steam decides when a game goes on sale and the % stays the same

night girder
#

Someone in here coined that steam takes 30%. Not looked it up myself. Let me fact check.

twin dew
#

That is the base rate.

night girder
#

wdym?

jagged snow
#

Sometimes they cut deals to give bigger games a better deal

night girder
#

Oh, interesting. So fucking over small indie studios even more hehe

#

it should be reversed.

#

give smaller games/studio better deals. And get the money at the big studios. Maybe that will wake them up to have better QA and release finished products.

night girder
#

I do read that 30% is also the standard for Epic Game Store

jagged snow
#

No

#

They take 12%

#

But they also aren't profitable

night girder
#

We reached out to nearly half a dozen sources within the games industry (as well as the game retailers directly) in order to get the actual numbers on what cuts most major retailers take. While many of these sources prefer to remain anonymous, they paint a picture that could be surprising to some players, one where Valve’s now infamous 30% cut isn’t actually out of the norm. In fact, it's pretty much the industry standard.

twin dew
#

Yes, 30% is what Google and Apple etc. use.

narrow folio
#

Is Epic still losing money like crazy with their game launcher?

twin dew
#

Epic is the one outlier.

night girder
jagged snow
#

Microsoft store is also in the 12-15% range iirc

night girder
#

Do you need to buy a special certificate for a few thousand dollars before you are allowed to upload to the Microsoft store or something?

#

Epic store is a logical and rational decision. To become competitive, the 12% helps. But Microsoft. That's fishy.

twin dew
night girder
#

Weird, I though App Store, Google Store and MS Store were all equal popular.

twin dew
#

Apple store is the only one you can use.
Almost the same with Google Store.
MS Store on Windows is bastard not many want.

night girder
#

ok, that puts it in perspective

charred pewter
#

getting a game posted on Apple's store is like the spanish inquisition with their gating

charred pewter
#

we have rates all over depending on negotiations

#

standard is 70/30, but we've got some on 85%

#

and some we basically only make 10 cents a sale on, no matter how expensive the game is =p ... we dont like those so much, but eh, its still business

dire igloo
jagged snow
charred pewter
#

moderate... i wouldnt say a LOT ...

#

the casual games make us more money ... but the steam games can sell in buttloads at times (depends on the discount)

#

and honestly, no one comes to buy Epic keys ...

#

we post those products, and we tell the publishers they wont sell, but, oh well LOL

dire igloo
#

Btw. Who's "we"?

charred pewter
#

Ubisoft is "in transition" ... all their products have been taken down because they are changing systems for their Direct Activation stuff

#

Mac/Win Game Store

#

wingamestore ... to the windows people... only casual mac gamers know of macgamestore

#

anyways, depending on royalty rates, and availability ... sometimes they make more per sale by selling their 'steam key' through a legit 3rd party merchant, than they would have gotten on steam itself if their steam rate is the standard 70/30

#

same for like fanatical, greenman, gamergate etc

#

its kinda fucked up that steam allows that lol but, it is what it is

#

(steam really should just do away with the steam keys bit, and go straight direct activation for authorized retailer/publishers .... it would 100% kill that graymarket)

night girder

I've seen that happen too. Also to get funding from goverment.

#

It can be a lot of work. Depending on what data is required for the application etc.

visual tree
#

Meanwhile, I am still waiting for fiber deployment in the rest of my city so I can finally get fast internet and dowload every possible game on steam jace_smile

night girder
#

and mistakes can result into not getting any funding.

night girder
#

but Fiber sounds like a far away dream for me 😦

visual tree
#

Good thing is you get a chance to fix the mistakes if they are minor when applying for funds which is often the case. If you make big mistakes in the application, you are basically screwed

visual tree
#

It's funny how we don't like customer support and tech support even though we are working in the same company.

#

Tech support people are not really tech-savvy. They just read a manual and offer support to customers

They sometimes literally behave like robots imo

night girder

can you blame them? Hearing the same question over and over again will turn you into a robot.

night girder
jagged snow
visual tree
#

lol

night girder
#

The problem will solve itself. The new generations should be way more familiar with tech.

jagged snow
night girder
#

And the older generations will fizzle out.

night girder
visual tree
#

I recently noticed teens don't know how to use google properly and that's because nobody told them how to use it

#

Because everyone assume young generation grew up with technology and they already know everything

night girder
#

I am trying to teach my niece the following: if something is "free" on the internet, like a game that normally costs 60 dollars, that it's fishy. And she shouldn't download it. She is 14 now. The sooner they learn the better. And keep stuff updated. Don't use the same password etc etc.

#

I am probably a nagging uncle, but I don't care. I can only try to convince them of the importance that I am trying to teach. And else they will find out sooner or later the hard way.

jagged snow
night girder
#

Let me give that a watch.

visual tree
#

That's why an education about computers should be mandatory. Just because gen Z grew up with technology doesn't mean they instantly absorbed all the knowledge and know how to use the tech

night girder
#

Ok, I think I am lucky. I was thaught all that at school from a young age, when I was about 6 I had my first class on computers I think.

visual tree
#

*or education about tech in general

night girder
#

It was mostly playing games, but still, fun to learn as a kid how a computer works by playing games πŸ˜›

#

And with games, it was math games. language games. And at the last 15 minuts, a real game. Like a kids game. Loved that class.

visual tree
#

I remember the good old days of Windows 95 or 98 when I was in 5th year in elementary school

night girder
#

I still have the floppy disks of those games btw!

visual tree
#

They were teaching us QBasic but I sucked at it lol

jagged snow
#

I've been almost entirely self-taught my computer knowledge, didn't have access to home internet or a pc until I was around 14

night girder
#

but crazy to think that younger generation doesn't know how a computer works. Like how it stores stuff. And where to find it.

#

Howard brainwashed a whole generation: "it just works"

night girder
#

I got the basic "How to use a PC" from school. All the rest. I learned myself too. Coding, hardware, ...

#

and the noise the first internet made was insane (the modems with dialup, or however you call it in english).

visual tree
#

We should discipline naughty gen Z children by forcing them to use dial-up internet connection hehe

night girder
visual tree
#

My sister and I were always fighting about the internet because you couldn't use the internet on a dial-up connection when someone is on the phone

#

And my sister was constantly on the phone lol

night girder
#

Others, meanwhile, believe it’s professors who need to adjust their thinking. Working with befuddled students has convinced Garland that the β€œlaundry basket” may be a superior model. She’s begun to see the limitations of directory structure in her personal life; she uses her computer’s search function to find her schedules and documents when she’s lost them in her stack of directories. β€œI’m like, huh ... I don’t even need these subfolders,” she says.

#

This is interesting. Is the directory system outdated. And should we see a PC as one big bin. And use the search function to find everything.

#

But what if I don't know the name of the file I am looking for? For example a picture.

jagged snow
#

Exactly the problem

night girder
#

I know it was a picture of a house with a tree, but I don't know the name. Now think that it's all in 1 directory. It's going to be a nightmare to find it.

#

If that picture is in a "picture" folder, it narrows it down.

#

We do have programs that can recognize the subject of pictures and automatically name/label them. So that could be a solution to this specific problem.

#

but what about videos or different json/xml files or anything. Not so sure I am a big fan of the "one bin concept and use search".

jagged snow
#

My bulk pictures folder from the last month

night girder
#

still, damn πŸ˜„ So happy I no longer do photography. I would had to upgrade my NAS already probably.

jagged snow
#

And that's from a camera that shoots relatively low resolution

night girder
#

My problem was: always too lazy to delete the bad pictures. I just went for the good ones, edited them and moved on.

jagged snow
#

I've been looking to upgrade to something that shoots at >50mp... that's 50mb per shot when shooting in losless compressed at 14-bit

#

So if a typical shoot is 500 pictures, that's 25gb right there...

night girder
#

Do you need that? How big do you print?

jagged snow
#

It's a nice-to-have, I'm planning to invest in lenses before then

jagged snow
#

But I'm really just barely getting started on turning it from a hobby to something profitable

night girder
#

I do believe, that having a high quality camera is a good thing. But at some point, if you never print really big, the return of investment isn't that great.

jagged snow
#

Oh it's absolutely not

#

It'd be something I bought because I wanted it, not because I needed it

night girder
#

Exactly. I did the same and eventually I never printed really big. But it did make photoshop easier to have high pixel density.

jagged snow
#

The lenses are more of a necessary upgrade because I want to transition into shooting sports more and I do need a longer tele zoom for that

night girder
#

the competition in my country is too high to be a professional photographer. There are too many of them.

night girder
jagged snow
#

yes

#

Although it doesn't make nearly as much of a difference if I'm already shooting at 1/2k

night girder
#

So jealous πŸ˜„

jagged snow
#

But the lens I'm eyeing has the capability to shoot 1/10handheld at 500mm with no visible loss of sharpness

night girder
#

If I would started again with taking photo's. It would be music and outside, just street photography and nature.

jagged snow
#

I love nature photography

night girder
#

Once I estabilished that "photography mindset" and I am walking outside looking around, a lot of times I think, shit that would have been a good photo.

#

I haven't taken any pictures for a long time and still I am think that.

#

I do use my phone sometimes but it's not the same. Altough I once saw a beautifull expo from a war in the middle-east. And it was all shots taken by an american soldier with his iphone. It was really really well shot.

jagged snow
#

I took this on monday for a new winter-themed phone wallpaper

night girder
#

Iphone picture of lake nearby.

#

Or some crazy lightning in the clouds.

#

Moments like that I whished I had my canon with me.

jagged snow
#

Oh yeah those are some cool moments

night girder
#

what lens are you planning to buy?

edgy hazel
#

libgtk-3.so.0: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
the wrong elf class oh no

jagged snow
night girder
jagged snow
#

Yeah, It's optically very good. It's a little pricey though

#

But in terms of performance, it has no real downsides

#

You can get a faster lens with narrower/fixed zoom or you can get a longer lens at a slower aperture

#

But for my uses it more or less ticks all the boxes

#

The autofocus is also one of teh better systems avaliable in that price range

#

And if I for some reason needed it, it'll still autofocus and meter correctly with a 1.4x teleconverter

night girder
#

only "drawback" that I read about is the weight

jagged snow
#

Yeah, it's over 2kg

#

But I'd be shooting with a monopod for sports so that wouldn't be an issue

#

If I were planning to do a lot of birding with it then it'd be much more of a consideration

night girder
#

what I would do too

jagged snow
#

Yeah
And even then, it wouldn't be the end of the world
High-quality zooms in that focal lengths really don't get any lighter

#

There's a 600mm prime that's almost half the weight but I don't have the use case for tele primes beyond 105mm

night girder
#

Sounds like a niche lens. Good for specific cases.

#

but 600mm prime sounds like hell πŸ˜‚

jagged snow
#

It's f/4 at 600 though πŸ‘€

night girder
#

Oof.

jagged snow
#

It's massively out of my price range anyways

#

And at those really long focal lengths, it takes a lot of walking to zoom in or out just a little πŸ˜…

night girder
#

That is one chill bird.

#

But 600mm does look beautiful.

jagged snow
#

Yup
That's a 3.4 degree fov for a full-frame camera

night girder
#

This one is taken with canon 600mm IS f4L

jagged snow
#

That's a beautiful shot

night girder
#

and lucky, since it's a prime

#

or, maybe very patient and waited for correct moment. I cannot rule either one out.

jagged snow
#

It probably took a lot of patience
This should was taken at 300mm, would've been cool to have something a little tighter

night girder
#

but still, a photo like that would be easier to frame without a prime.

jagged snow
#

Oh absolutely

#

I only use primes for people and stationary objects

night girder
#

such an expensive hobby 😦 (gaming is nothing compared to it)

jagged snow
#

Yeah

night girder

not sure what you use, but how much is photoshop lately?

Not really worse off, but the pure numbers in the quarterly reports will look worse if you just look at the numbers, without trying to understand them.
But that affects the bonuses of the exec team, and the short term "investors".

Running insane blender simulations seems to take up a boatload of memory and page file

#

I wonder if I add another 16gb can I handle 100x100 subdivisions

twin dew
#

If it uses swap at all, then you need more RAM.

sharp oasis
#

It uses swap like crazy.

twin dew
#

You need as much extra RAM as it is using swap.

sharp oasis
#

It was enough to fully saturate the swap file. And proceed to crash

#

So I might be needing an insane amount of ram to handle such a simulation

twin dew
#

How large is the page file set to be currently?
Default "automatic" is too slow to respond.

sharp oasis
#

Also when I did a subdivide by 100 and then by 25 vertices started kinda flying out to the left of the subdivided object. Is this a ram issue

twin dew
#

Which doesn't work on fast changes like this.

sharp oasis
#

I might allocate 64gb of swapfike

twin dew
#

You need to set static size.

sharp oasis
#

That's a large enough size I suppose

#

Plus 48gb ram

#

Yeah I donr have 2 32gb kits I. And I know mixing kits is a bad idea.

#

I'll use fallback timings where the ram should both be stable

#

So slightly slower then JEDEC to handle both kits

#

Both of em are 16-20-20-36 primary but I assume the secondarys are different

sharp oasis
#

@twin dew 48gb of ddr4 and 128gb of swap file

#

That's should handle it

sharp oasis
#

It is holding

edgy hazel
#

I just killed production jace_smile_2 sf_post_nobelisk

sharp oasis
#

It's taking 42/48gb of ram is allocated to blender on its own. And another few gigs of swap file. (it has 128gb of swap file so I'm not worried)

Could someone suggest a decent 1080p Webcam?

twin dew
#

Logitech C920(S) Pro / C922(S) Pro? (S for physical cover flap models).

hardy forge
#

Hm

twin dew
#

But depends on usage, those have pretty wide FOV.

#

So if you are for Streaming, with separate mic etc. then not the right ones.
Great for meetings etc. without separate mic.

hardy forge
#

Idk, im gonna be trying fbt with stuff lol

dire igloo
twin dew
#

Well, the C270 isn't 1080p.

hardy forge
#

For a 1080p camera 30fps still seems a tad mrh

#

Meh

twin dew
#

Then be ready to put even more money into it.
But then it depends what you want to use it for.

dusk rivet
#

i got some 1080p 60fps camera for online school and just use it for school assignments where i have to record myself

#

recently recorded a school assignment with obs cause i couldn’t get the school approved software to work

#

more than enough for assignments or as a webcam for streaming

dire igloo
#

Forgot about that

dire igloo

Also, you can just use your phone.
For Android, there's DroidcamX

All you gotta do is ducktape the iphone to the back of your macbook pro.

night girder
#

So I bump the FCLK. But not to 1900. We set it to 1733 (ran stable for weeks now), I just looked at the next predefined setting and that was 1750.

twin dew
#

1900 should be safe starting point as in that it will reliably boot.
And going from 1733 to 1900 would take ages.

#

So you set to 1900, and if that reboots, then go lower.

night girder
twin dew
#

2:3 is the "default"

night girder
#

but yoodley says otherwise πŸ˜‰

twin dew
#

2000MHz FCLK for 3000MHz / 6000MT/s memory.

night girder
twin dew
#

That is for AM4.
And that is 1:1.

#

3600MT/s / 1800MHz RAM.

#

AM4 just sucked bad if the FCLK, UCLK and MCLK weren't all the same.
AM5 doesn't, as AMD improved the system, as 3000MHz IF wasn't possible to keep up with the DDR5 RAM.

#

There is sweet spot at 2:3, but that is so small that it only matters for one or two speed grades.
So with 6000MT/s RAM, 2000MHz FLCK is "optimum", 2033 will be slower, 2067 can be slower, 2100 would always be faster.

#

So for AM4, the FCLK must be 1:2 of the RAM MT/s (1:1 true frequency).
For AM5 the "optimum" is 1:3 of the RAM MT/s, but that is just momentary sweet spot (2:3 true frequency).

night girder
#

confusing to go from MT (memory) to MHz (for FLCK).

#

but thanks for the info.

#

My memory is currently set to DDR5-4800 (memory clock: 2395.7MHz) . Wouldn't that mean FLCK should be 1600MHz or 3200MHz πŸ˜’

twin dew
#

1600 for the 2:3 true, but as that is so low that 1667 would win over it in all cases.
And anything higher than that is better until you get unstable.

night girder
twin dew
#

4800/3 = 1600, 4800/2 = 2400, 2400*2/3 = 1600.

#

2:3 is on the true frequencies, the 4800 is the effective, which is double the true.
4800MT/s, 2400MHz.

night girder
#

I though it had to be 2/3 of 4800 haha (3200)

twin dew
#

1:3 from MT/s, 2:3 from true MHz.

night girder
#

ooooh 2:3. Got it. My bad. So bad at maths.

#

Thanks.

twin dew
#

WTF is going on?
Should be in steps of 33.3... MHz.

#

For FCLK.

night girder
#

I was about to ask.

#

I cannot enter manual values it seems.

#

It's bumping nice for 1600 to 1800.

#

And then it goes from 1800 straight to 2000 🀣

twin dew
#

50 and 60 shouldn't be even possible.
As it should be via 1/3rd divisor from 100MHz base clock...

night girder
#

As(s)rock hehe

#

I guess I can set it to 1800MHz.

twin dew
#

Yes.

#

Are you on the 2.02 BIOS?
Or 2.00?

night girder
#

2.02

twin dew
#

2.03 is starting to be rolled out by Asrock, but only the B650 Taichi so far.

night girder
#

doubt that will solve the issue. Still nice.

#

I am confused why they added these bump settings, but go straight from 1800MHz to 2000MHz.

twin dew
#

I have no idea what is going on.
Because as far as I know, those divisors aren't possible.

night girder
#

I could contact support.

dire igloo
night girder
#

@twin dew Just had a crash with 1750MHz. So back to 1733MHz.

twin dew
#

Did you check what HWiNFO showed as the IF frequency while on that 1750?

night girder
#

No, I assumed +- 1750MHz πŸ˜‰

twin dew
#

I would be very interested to see what it says, as that 1750 shouldn't be possible.

night girder
#

For you. I will check.

twin dew
#

Ok... No idea what they are doing to make that happen...

night girder
#

So I guess I cannot go higher than 1733MHz.

twin dew
#

Try the 1800?
As the 1750 is just WEIRD.

#

And 1800 is one of the standard ones.

night girder
#

I am a bit confused at the event viewer at the moment, it says my PC didn't shut down properly around 14:00 +-. But I can't remember it crashing then πŸ€”

#

maybe it happened during a reboot. Huh ...

#

Green is what just happened. No idea about the yellow line.

#

I wonder if eventlogger also logs when windows is restarting.

#

restart [black screen] -> crash [also black screen, so I wouldn't notice, beside maybe taking longer] -> boot. But it would surprise me that windows logs this at this point.

charred pewter
#

now...... i dont think it would be wise to use with working on my PC 😦

night girder
#

Pff, and we are back at square 1.

#

crashing at 1733 FLCK. The one we thought was stable.

twin dew
#

So I would say your CPU is almost dead?

night girder
#

why would you say that.

#

I can play BG3 for days on end. Maybe we got it wrong πŸ˜’

twin dew
#

If the stable FCLK has gone down so much.
And soon it will not be stable at "stock".

night girder
#

all I did was switch from 1733MHz to 1750MHz. Back to 1733MHz and it just crashed.

#

The second thing I did yesterday, was reenable G-Sync on my monitor.

twin dew
#

If this isn't some really weird MB BIOS issue.

night girder
#

I enable G-sync because I though it was the FLCK setting and we were good.

night girder
#

stable for 20 days+

twin dew
#

I would suggest contacting the place you bought the CPU and/or MB from.
Because this could be VSOC dying CPU.

night girder
#

Anyway to know for sure?

#

or is the only thing we can do now, replace CPU and see how it goes? πŸ˜’

twin dew
#

Not really, but if the stable FCLK has been going down over time, sounds like it.

night girder
#

I am just thinking: maybe it wasn't the FCLK and I just got lucky for a long period. I did mostly play BG3 and not GW2.

twin dew
#

Remember that when we first started tuning it, you didn't boot at BIOS defaults (2000MHz FCLK) for a time.

#

If you reset the MB to defaults, you probably wouldn't boot anymore.

night girder
#

that's when i switched my RAM units to see if that was the cause.

twin dew
#

When you cleared the CMOS?

night girder
#

Yes!

#

That's when I swapped RAM units and something didn't go properly.

twin dew
#

Ok.

night girder
#

Do these values need to be auto too?

twin dew
#

Seem to be what the defaults are IIRC.

night girder
twin dew
#

From AMDs Sampson Jackson:

It's not directly connected to 1:1 / 1:2 mode, but rather the memory frequency; I think that's what you were saying. The automatic behavior/rule is - [ IF DDR5 >6000MT/s THEN RX=2; TX=3; CTRL=1, ELSE RX=1; TX=2; CTRL=0 ].

#

Lower is tighter.

night girder
#

No clue honestly.

twin dew
#

Meant that the settings you had for the Nitro were the ones for MORE than 6000MT/s RAM speeds when on auto.

#

And would be 1, 2, 0 by default on 6000MT/s and lower.

night girder
#

So they are wrong?

twin dew
night girder
#

Doubt that's it. I mean, doesn't sound like somethign that would silent crash my PC.

languid gulch
#

k, got a weird one for y'all

#

i accidentally knocked my external on the ground from about 10cm up. onto carpet, so a soft landing. it then brain farted & refused to read until i unplugged/plugged it back in

#

seems like everything's fine after running a few tests, but why would it brain fart like that?

night girder
#

I mean, I don't have much data besides it randomly crashes with GW2.

twin dew
#

Ah, still only GW2? And not in anything else?

night girder
#

I played BG3 for days and days. The last crash was from 21/12/2023. It only started today when I switched the FLCK. But now it was on default (1733MHz) and it also crashed which made me worry. Maybe it was a one time thing, but I think it's not. We'll see.

one with moving parts still?

twin dew
#

Unstable FCLK would crash in any RAM or IO load.

night girder
#

I did memtest86 a while back and it had no issues.

#

I was downloading a windows update in the background when it crashed @ 1733MHz.

twin dew
#

Crash? Or just reboot?

night girder
#

100% crash because it's in my logs.

#

18:31 -> was the crash + update.

twin dew
#

I mean crash as in getting BSOD or like.
With reboot meaning the computer just rebooted without warning to OS.

night girder

hard crash. black screen.

never had BSOD
