#

Oh yeah, done that already

#

Adb is working fine, it's actually fastboot that's giving me problems

#

Misspoke earlier

#

Well rip

jagged snow
#

Yeah πŸ˜”

#

Unfortunately, restarting my PC didn't magically fix it

#

Interestingly, I have to put the device in file transfer/android auto usb mode for adb to work

#

So I'm wondering if that's what's not allowing fastboot to work

#

I really just don't have a ton of experience with adb

#

So anyone with knowledge that would like to pitch in on this fine new years eve would be appreciated πŸ‘€

as i suspected, after making some prototypes and testing fan arrangements... having 6 fans in parallel, vs the 6 fans in 2-pair series (3 sets) ... the sets in series drew more air (at 50% pwm) through the chamber than in parallel. however at 40%, the parallel drew more air, but not as much (and louder) as the in series at 50%. overall the parallel setup was noisier than the series. so conclusion is: in series they push more air at a lower volume/noise level, so in-series is better for my setup

#

i tested multiple spacings for the in-series sets... 1inch, up to 4inch (25mm up to 100mm)..... strangely the ONLY difference I could measure, was the maximum distance was a bit more noisey by 1db

#

airflow was completely unaffected... so i dunno if thats due to the arctic fans im using just naturally work well in series, or something else

#

i even tried them back to back with only the thickness of cardboard between them (about 6mm) ... no ill affects

jagged snow
#

If you want to get the most performance out of your fans in series, you'll want to get the fancy reversed ones

charred pewter
#

as in, fan 1 goes one way, fan 2 goes the other way (in a set)?

jagged snow
#

Yeah

#

The further apart they are the less it matters

charred pewter
#

thats fancy πŸ˜„ not sure arctic sell reverse spin fans, i'd have to mix brands

jagged snow
#

You would also probably get more performance out of the sets that were father apart if you used some sort of flow stabilisation

charred pewter
#

ive not yet tested putting a pattern of fins between them.... need to fashion something up thats thin enough per fin, and a grid or slat pattern

#

i could probably make something out of the flat tin that ducting is made out of of... tricky part is getting them perfectly flat with no bend in them, and finger them together

#

slats of cardboard would be too think per slat .... would impede flow

dusk rivet
#

i should probably do some cable management

charred pewter
#

god this new logitech wireless mouse i got is .... well, i like the buttons, its lightweight, it fits nice in the claw grip, and it has a light scroll wheel .... BUT ..... here is me trying to move the mouse horizontally 'straight' (like moving my cursor along a line with the I-Beam to select text).... the top 4 lines are 'freehand' ... the bottom four lines are "using a box to guide it straight" .... W T F

dusk rivet
#

how is the box less accurate?

charred pewter
#

i kNOW?!

#

but its decidely going up and down all by itself as i move across the pad

dusk rivet
#

super weird

charred pewter
#

physically i feel like im moving normally ....

jagged snow
#

Does it have the option to calibrate for different surfaces?

#

Could be that it's having trouble tracking on your pad

charred pewter
#

just tried two pads and the bare wood surface too ... grr

#

lol a white box it doesnt move at all πŸ˜„

#

theres no software on mac, its just the built in thing thing

#

blue lines are me using my old wired mouse

#

yeah ........ think im gonna have to relegate this "logi" wireless mouse to my downstairs HTPC (since its wireless, works from couch)

#

i tried 4 different surfaces now, three pads i had (all ranging from solid black, to spacey scenes)

#

its doing this wiggle going up and down too ...

dusk rivet
charred pewter
#

i used to freehand in photoshop with the mouse ... so its kind of natural to me (thus why this new mouse was instantly like WHOAH IM DRUNK!)

#

i was just trying to edit some code, moving the i-beam and selecting text... and it was all over the place LOL ...

dusk rivet
#

i chocked up some degree of variability to natural hand imprecision, but i shouldn't have

#

that's some brain surgeon level precision

charred pewter
#

just tried some more lines with the new mouse on a different pad ...

#

it likes to just go veering off at times

jagged snow
#

This is what I do without going especially slow or anything

charred pewter
#

and some new lines with old mouse ...

#

yeah.... not even 'trying' ... its smoother

#

the end of the line usually goes wonker cause thats where the 'wrist' is bending off towards the end of the pad

#

crap! .... this wireless mouse is nice though... the buttons are soft and silent, the scroll wheel doesnt grind... its lightweight (despite the battery in it) !

#

but ... but ... ITS ALL OVER THE PLACE

#

ive got many mousepads, the one im using right now is a steelseries black pad

#

not very heavy battery

#

its a single AA ... so not bad

#

ive always laid my 'wire' for the mouse out in a way that it never drags or pulls or bunches ... so i rarely notice the cable

#

requires desk space lol ...

#

DAMNIT ... i cant get this new mouse moving predictably ... ive tried 3 different usb ports for its dongle, and tried adjusting apples mouse control panel ... different pads .... Argggggggggg

#

this cant be normal .... i'll contact logitech about it, see what they say

#

plugged it into my PC ... doing the same thing

#

that can be annoying

#

especially when they dont provide two sliders for adjusting them .....

#

its bad

#

i never bothered to buy one.... the whole right-click issue is a nightmare

#

So might be your old mouse had that.
Or it is lower DPI, and by setting that down in the new one would get it better too.

#

Either first or second Razer DeathAdder had that in original firmware, and Razer had to start releasing firmwares without it too from consumer backlash.

#

Anyways, P14 fans finally ordered.
So that I can finally assemble the 7800X3D system to (for now) final configuration and put it into actual usage.

languid gulch
#

i'm still trying to figure out if big fat cores like AM5 or p/e cores are going to be the better way forward for me

twin dew
#

Depends what you do, and if you go to single-CCD or dual-CCD AM5.

languid gulch
#

$300 for only 2 more cores than i have doesn't feel like enough of a bump

#

& i know i got spoiled with what i paid for my 1700X & 5600X

twin dew
#

It is not about the number of cores.
It is about the single-core and multi-core performance?
In the specific programs you use.

languid gulch
#

mostly gaming, with a bunch of non-"work" background stuff running

twin dew
#

So 7800X3D is very hard to beat for general gaming.

For actual work-type multicore loads the Intel can be good.
But then in those the 7950X(3D) is often better.

And Intel is the leader in some specific programs like Photoshop and Premiere IIRC because of the single-core performance and program optimizations.

languid gulch
#

i do know that one of my games is weird in that it likes to use more than 1 core

twin dew
#

Or just going with 5800X3D

#

Games on dual-CCD parts usually run better when limited to single CCD on AMD.
Because the extra latency from the cross CCD communication loses all the benefits from the extra cores.

languid gulch
#

it's not like i'm on any kind of serious time crunch, i was thinking of waiting until next gen AMD comes out before making a decision

#

with how wonky the AM4 introduction was, i was expecting more of the same with AM5's first gen

twin dew
#

VSOC debacle wasn't wonk enough?

languid gulch
#

🀣

#

& i was really worried about the cooling issues

#

& i still kind of am

#

intel is just a power hog so cooling is a problem, & AM5's thicker heat spreader is a pain in the ass

twin dew
#

Which was "optimization" to not have the need for better CPU mounting mechanism and bypass the LGA1700 problems with bendy CPUs with need for third party mounting frames.

languid gulch
#

oh i know the excuses

#

they could have just made a hard chop between old & new coolers

#

it's happened before

twin dew
#

Having better CPU mounting mechanism would have been the right thing to do.

twin dew
languid gulch
#

& yea, they could have found 2mm somewhere

#

oh for intel sure

#

or intel could have not been dumbasses & make their chips rectangular

twin dew
#

And that cooler compatibility was no brainer at that point.
But for AMD to use better CPU mounting to not need the thick IHS would have been the right solution IMHO.

#

Intel just fucked up with LGA1700.

languid gulch
#

yea, imagine the good press they could have gotten if they had just said "ok, new cooler required, but on the other hand, it's better than intel"

twin dew
#

AMD made bad decision to allow them to use same cheap single-throw mounting system still.
And then added little extra to get direct cooler compatibility.

languid gulch
#

& now the cooler manufacturers are screwed, because unless they do a ton more R&D, they can't get past that thick heat spreader

twin dew
#

Would have been the case with the thick IHS solution even without the extra thickness to get AM4 compatible.

#

Which was the baseline.

languid gulch
#

so it's doubly dumb

twin dew
#

And there isn't suitable CPU mounting mechanism yet developed to not need the thick IHS, or mounting frame type thing.

#

The server sockets use mounting frame type things by default and come with or need torque drivers to use with them.

#

Would have needed some kind of double-lever thingie with multiple contact points per side for thin IHS without bending problems.

#

Because having mounting frame thingie as standard for consumer platform is complete no-go.

soft bloom
#

it became even worse:
powerstation suddenly turned of AC output when PC was connected to it with an "inverter overcurrent protection" error.
why?!
it was drawing just about 160W and was connected to the grid... if it grid was to shutdown it shoud have continuaed operating as normal - already tested a bunch of times. battery was full.

twin dew
#

Because those care about VA, not W.
So power factor matters.

Took too much amperage.

#

And the switching moment can cause weird behavior if the unit isn't meant to be UPS.

#

Power stations are meant to be offline power source, not UPS.

#

So they might not be build to handle input loss when there is load connected.

soft bloom
soft bloom
twin dew
#

"inverter overcurrent protection", the AC load(s) connected tried to take too much power.

#

From battery.

#

Inverter is the bit that converts DC to AC.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Because the load isn't completely stable.
And the inverter cares about VA, not W.

#

W is simplification with AC, VA is the real load with power factor included.

soft bloom
#

and 150W is like nothing for this model
600W AC Pure Sine Wave Inverter (1,200W surge)

twin dew
#

Then it might be faulty?

soft bloom
#

that's the only conclusion i could draw...
yet it's only once (maybe, with a bit of a stretch, second time)

soft bloom
twin dew
#

And when does that error happen?
When connecting or starting the computer?
At some other point?

soft bloom
#

that other time i ever witnessed that error was during the boot, yes...
but itwas that strange configuration with powerstation -> old UPS -> PC
when i turned on old UPS, PC wanted to boot but pwoerstation shut off AC with that message
so it could have been caused by how old UPS turns on... which might draw (speculation) more current to charge capacitor, begin accum charge and prodive output to PC

soft bloom
soft bloom
#

Huh
It happened second time...

#

Wild guess: could this be due to grid frequency?..

#

Both times without any load on gpu (well except for usual desktop environment, not even video playback).
This setup worked fine while gaming.

twin dew
#

Power factor can get really crappy in low load on PSU.

#

Basically the load spike happening way outside the AC voltage high-points.

soft bloom
#

rechecked - 50Hz is a match, and it does not seem to fluctuate in a grid.

twin dew
#

PF of 0.7 to 0.3 IIRC.
Where 1.0 would be perfect and 0.0 impossible.

#

As in with 0.0 it would try to pull infinite amperage from 0 volts.

soft bloom
#

you mean effeciency of PSU?

twin dew
#

No, Power Factor.

soft bloom
#

eh

#

oh wow its actually rated 750W 80plus gold

#

what i am worried about is PSU's input current 12-6A

#

while powerstation is rated for only 2.6A on output AC

twin dew
#

But basically at 0.5 power factor, 100W load is 200VA load (200 "W") on the inverter.

soft bloom
#

yet it claims that in "bypass mode" ac pwoer will directly support the loads on AC output ports and charge powerstation

twin dew
#

Unfortunately cannot find simplified thing for the Power Factor that doesn't need pre-knowledge of how AC power is graphed etc.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

In electrical engineering, the power factor of an AC power system is defined as the ratio of the real power absorbed by the load to the apparent power flowing in the circuit. Real power is the average of the instantaneous product of voltage and current and represents the capacity of the electricity for performing work. Apparent power is the pro...

#

Phase difference between the amperage and the voltage.

soft bloom
#

ok, seems like i am starting to udnerstand what you are reffering to. its from theory, not something written on the box πŸ™‚

#

but where would all that power go too?
isn't that bascially same as PSU's efficiency (same as what these 80plus standards are designed to ensure)?

twin dew
#

Yeah, the power factor isn't a spec and it changes with the load on the PSU.

#

No, Efficiency is the loss to heat inside the PSU.
Power Factor is when the PSU pulls the power from the grid.
80 Plus mandates that PF must be 0.9 or better at 100% load.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

But the lower load PF isn't specced IIRC.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

It is always different if the load isn't purely resistive.
As capacitor and inductor naturally have 90 degree phase difference.
Reason why industrial users are billed by VA, not W.
Which takes the PF into account.
And why UPSes are rated in VA and not W.

#

And why Active PF control circuits exist in better PSUs etc.

#

And the cheap add-on power meters can measure the PF.

soft bloom
#

hmm, there's probably no way i could detect VA spike with my common multimeter

twin dew
#

My 7800X3D with Seasonic Gold rated PSU, IIRC 650W unit, is right now pulling average of 0.38A with PF of 0.82-0.84.
75W average, on 235V supply.

#

Running two core AVX512 load.

#

Seasonic Prime series.

#

So loading the grid like it was 92W load?

#

And that was the whole-system before PSU wattage.

#

HWiNFO says that CPU is taking 40W total.

dire igloo
#

40W with two cores fully loaded and the others more or less idling sounds reasonable

twin dew
#

10.3W of that for the IOD with IGP on.

#

But anyways, Grid sees 92VA load (about 92W equivalent), PSU takes 75W, gives loses some to itself (efficiency).
Gives less than 75W to the computer, of which about 40W is used by the CPU.
With MBN VRM efficiency losses between that too.

#

That difference between 92VA and 75W is from the power factor.

soft bloom
twin dew
#

Phase difference thing between the amp draw and the voltage curve when talking about AC draws.

#

Less voltage, so needs more amps to get the wattage.
And the difference is from if you drew the same amperage at the "correct" point on the voltage curve, how high would the wattage be.

#

As simplification.

#

As the limit is amps based, not wattage based in power grids, inverters etc.

#

To large extent.

soft bloom
#

if the energy is returned - than why not just stick to W and be happy cause grid gets its pwoer back? πŸ™‚

#

anyway, all that means that there could be power draw larger than what powerstation displays.
plus, PSU might want more current just by itself, despite being under relatively low load...
together this means "don't use it with PC"

#

maybe installing old PSU with lower wattage will help

twin dew
#

Or newer one of similar wattage that has better PFC correction.

#

This kind of things are a thing and can measure the current and power factor.

#

Plug-In Power Consumption Meters

soft bloom
#

HWiNFO reports 60W on CPU and 120W on GPU
while powerstation reports 250-280W ac output

twin dew
#

The rating given by GPU manufacturer is oversized to account for otherwise high-load computers and bad PSUs that cannot actually deliver the rated wattage.

soft bloom
#

yet there might have been some issue when itried running it with 550W PSU.
yet i think it could have been due to something else, cause it was alaso with different motherboard and CPU, and at least once i cought nvme drive overheating - it was a system drive and it was directly under GPU's exhaust

soft bloom
night girder
#

Even thinking of getting more smart plugs.

#

They can measure, remote , auto turn on and off and they can have a power schedule.

twin dew
#

But anyways, Core-Cycler Prime95 with Y-cruncher background load, both on AVX512+HT and 20% CPU fans found that third best core had too large negative CO offset.
Reboots from uncorrectable cache ECC errors which got fixed by one step less, and then just corrected cache errors until changed second step.
So from -23 to -21.

#

Now doing probably second to last: Core-Cycler Y-cruncher with Prime95 on the "better" cores, with ATX512+HT, step by step from 1 to 8 cores, with 20% fan speed.
And then either of those without HT while I wait for the fans, which were back-ordered and will probably arrive next week to me.

#

Had been perfectly stable at the same test with CPU cooler fans at 100%.

#

But that kind of thing is to be expected.
As the voltage used for certain frequency changes with cpu temperature in the AMD boost tables.

Since early summer in bursts?
Haven't been able to complete the build anyways.

Fractal Design Define R6

#

Now replacing the stock Fractal Design Dynamic X2 GP-14 fans (3-pin) with P14s (PWM)

narrow folio

I put the 7800X3D build in a Corsair 4000D airflow, did fit well enough

twin dew

22,90e per case with three fans, and two cases.

dire igloo

but are the fans actually better? or just PWM control?

twin dew
#

Both.

narrow folio

the Corsair fans could be better, but my mom is not really sensitive to fan noise. Can always be replaced with better fans later if needed

twin dew

Radiator, intake, outtake and no obstruction tests in there at multiple noise levels.

night girder

I just go to BIOS, turn off the fans in there one by one to check which one is messed up.

My advice, when a fans sounds bad, replace it.

narrow folio
night girder
dire igloo

FanControl allows you much better control over your fans

narrow folio
#

yeah, way better control options than anything the bios could ever come up with

Any Blender geometry node gurus here?

twin dew
#

Hmm... Time to go plug by cars block heater cable in, need to go out tomorrow and it should be -25 C or lower temperature.
Should start without probelms, but why take the risk and with electrical interior heater it will be much nicer.

narrow folio
#

engine block heater only or the interior too?

twin dew
#

Both

narrow folio
#

ok, let me rephrase that: two heaters or one with running water pump and car fans?

twin dew
#

Two, one electrical element at the block, about 150W or so usually? Haven't measured this specific car.
And then 1150/1900W two power interior heater, this one: www.defa.com/product/termini-ii-1900/

So just this thing in the front inside the car, and you select whatever interior heater you want:

People do leave without unplugging from time to time and cause damage to things.

#

Like people forget the nozzle at gas pumps at times.
If they allow "lock and forget" operation.

#

No real indication, as usually the power is on 2 hour timer you can set.
So the interior heater etc. only run during that slice of time.

The other one was from Finnish Wikipedia.

night girder
twin dew
#

A block heater is used in cold climates to warm an engine prior to starting. They are mostly used for car engines; however, they have also been used in aircraft engines.
The most common design of block heater is an electrical heating element embedded in the engine block.

#

That image is old one where there wasn't separate connector in the bumper.

narrow folio
#

found a version that also chargers your car battery and some even have gps tracking if you want

twin dew
#

There would be charger add-ons to the Defa system.
And then there are the fuel using ones instead of cabled that can be remote activated etc.

#

Modular systems from several manufacturers, Defa is the most common in Finland.

#

Webasto is the most common fuel burner based one.

narrow folio
#

preheating the engine and oil seems like a nice thing even with warmer temps, saves the time needed to heat the stuff to normal operating temps

#

Webasto is great, just working properly

#

fuel based heating is the go to solution if you don't have a fixed parking spot

twin dew
#

And forgot about Defa having the remote control options for car side if you live in place without the timer on the outlet.

night girder
#

ah makes sense. never cold enough here to have block heaters in our cars.

narrow folio

yeah, an unfortunate reality is that now people will have everything they do on the internet perpetually locked away on some database for the rest of their lives, maybe we should think about what we want carved into the stone tablet of the internet forever before we type it

visual tree
#

I don't have time for this 😫

#

It's a router requirement in 3 pages if you want to use your own equipment for internet access....

#

I was hoping you could use your own SFP module but guess it's more complicated

narrow folio
#

GPON is fibre, but completely different from normal 1 to 1 connections. Everything gets the same signal, but timeslots and different wavelengths (and encryption) differentiate between the individual endpoints

#

but the typical Fritzbox should have everything needed

#

Fritzbox 5530

#

some requirements seem weird, as in not their problem as they are on the users side of the network

visual tree
#

I was thinking of using Unify UDM Pro + MA5671A SFP since they are both compatible with each other. Some experts managed to make it work

#

The trickiest part is changing the SFP module serial number and PLOAM password

#

Apparently, ISP gives away new routers which have PLOAM password visible so 50% of the work is already done

narrow folio
#

are there GPON SFP modules? never looked at that

#

I've worked enough for small companies and they are highly unstable. Never repeating that mistake again

#

They are reconstructing the existing building?

#

Hope they are planning to pull fiber cable from the building basement to each apartment to make it future-proof

#

Here, they install fiber in older buildings by placing cable trunking on the wall which is aesthetically unpleasing

#

They refuse to pull the fiber through wall cable conduits unless the conduit diameter is large and there is enough space for bending the fiber without damaging it

charred pewter
#

when they installed it at my house, they went through-n-through the outter wall right to my office and hooked up the convertor box .... they didnt wanna fuss with fishing around in walls or up or down or attic lol ... so i basically have 'fiber to the baseboard'

visual tree
#

This is how it looks like in my sister's building: each ISP installs a splice box on each apartment building floor/hallway

charred pewter
#

interesting

visual tree
#

2 ISP's in total, each offering fiber

#

Since it is illegal for one ISP to use another ISP's cable trunking

#

When the technician ran a fiber strand inside my sister's apartment, he didn't use cable trunking since it is ugly

#

He simply placed a fiber strand on the wall and covered it in caulk so you can't notice it

charred pewter
#

we only have one isp that provides fiber around here, so yeah, its 'all theirs'

#

they also told me that i have to leave the convertor box alone, and leave it behind if i sell the house ... since normally they put those outside, and its their property to deal with

#

well, the entire lower half of my house is solid brick, no wood walls at all

#

its brick, brick, cement, horse-hair plaster, paint

#

downstairs walls get a bit 'chilly' to the touch during winter 😦

#

when i rewired the upstairs for new romex ... i had to go up the central wall in the house which was hallow ... cause all the outside walls were solid brick/concrete 😦

#

oh yeah, new built stuff around here is like matchbook houses ... flimsy wood and plasterwall wrapped in plastic siding, you can actually cut your way into a house using a utility knife =p

#

oh no kidding, some new built homes in rich areas are like 2million ... but are so cheap-ass crappy made

Mbps vs. MBps.
8-fold difference in theory, often up to 10 fold in actuality.

#

So 80MBps = 640 Mbps on that 8 bits per byte theoretical, without overheads.

twin dew
# visual tree I don't have time for this 😫

135, 136 and 137 might be important, if the connection actually uses the stuff (probably not).
140 is important, but that can be done with manual firewall rules on the router if it doesn't do the stuff automatically, like it should.

#

128 doesn't matter really and is just network internal stuff, jumbo frames can allow for faster actual speeds inside the LAN, but ALL the devices would need to support the specific size.
Almost no-one actually uses them anymore, were bandaid for time when CPU power wasn't there otherwise for full bandwidth 1Gbit/s or 10Gbit/s traffic.
And most of the rest is just standard.

#

But basically the whole list is ass-covering, so that if there are problems, the ISP can point at specific requirement that you didn't fill.
Even when most of the requirements are standard to everything, some are just ass-covering, and few specific ones are actually the ones that matter.

#

Basically seems that the list is directly the list of what they themselves include in the competition requirements when they want to select router that they will sell/rent/include.

#

@visual tree The short version: Anything you can actually connect should fill the requirements to the extend that they actually matter.

#

Except for the routing speed requirements.
And that only limits the speed you can use.

Basically, a bank clerk managed to retrieve my card since the ATM swallowed it. He told me I only had to call the bank and ask them to unblock the card.

But under average loads and even cinabench

It doesn't break 65c and 90w

But AVX2 with ooct pushes it to full power it seems

charred pewter
# sharp oasis

correct, just cause its a pcie 1x, doesnt mean it has to go into the tiny slot... it can be put into a giant slot at the far end of the board

#

its actually how i fit my SBZ, its a pcie1x, and i have it in a 16x slot on the end, so there is maximum distance between GPU...

baldur, I have a question. Could i mod a 5700XT to have 16Gb vram

#

Theoretically

twin dew

No idea.
As there isn't such model natively, it would probably need VBIOS mod too, which might not even be possible if that part of the VBIOS is signed.

its the same die

sharp oasis

@twin dew sorry to disturb. But I want a second opinion on an issue a freind is having.

She owns the same card I did asrock Challenger D 6700XT 12GB CLD
And is having Hotspots exceeding 100c
And exceeding delta 30C

I have generally found information across techpowerup and amd forums that anything under 110 is normal. Bur the average load Hotspot is 90c.
Should she rma her card or wait till it gets worse.

twin dew
#

That delta says that there is problem with the cooler contact.

#

So should try to get RMA for it.

sharp oasis
#

Thank you.

sharp oasis

Holy fuck people in amd server are thick headed as hell

I cite several sources.

And it's still. Oh it's not throttling so it's not a possible issue to warrant rma

It is possible, just harder to get.

night girder

thousands of cards bought/sold and steam takes 2 pennies each transaction .... CHA CHING

even though they give out free cards during events ... selling them off means someone has to buy them, and steam gets their 2 pennies for each one sold off

like for my account .... i 'sell' off cards and use those funds to buy just a couple i wanted to complete a game with. i sell off more cards than i 'buy' so personally, i never spend a dime. however someone had to buy something somewhere along the lines, and steam would have taken their cut. its crazy thinking about it
