like disabling hardware acceleration in discord might fix the symptoms, doesn't mean it was the actually problem.
and also, why did it only happen with GW 2 so far π€
I alt + tabbed a lot when I played RD2. Maybe I didn't had discord open.
One of the first things I did was uninstall onedrive. Simply because I didn't ask for it.
I use it so π€·ββοΈ
ah, sucks for you
It's a terabyte of storage
true, and it might be why the bug exists... how many people play GW2 and alt-tab to Discord a lot to trigger it...
It's actually very useful
games do weird things when alt-tabbed ... look at basically every Ubisoft game. alt-tabbing is so unpredictable what happens π
heck, even just LAUNCHING a ubisoft game, i get different results sometimes !
I got my own cloud so π€·ββοΈ
you do?
yeah, my NAS. It has a cloud application to sync files across devices.
but its not a cloud 'out there' though ...
I can use it from my phone if I want. Anywhere I want, aslong as I have internet. But the same goes for cloud.
sort of a 'local cloud' but remotely accessible ...
a cloud is just a server you access remotely
well, to me, a cloud would be a server that is ALWAYS remote (thus never in danger of being burned down with your house along with your computer)
Yeah I currently don't want all my shit saved on a server made by a novice
Yeah, cloud has multiple datacenters spread around the world.
But Synology calls it a private cloud.
right
If I want, I can back-up my NAS to other cloud services π€
hehe
we use some of google drive space for just storing shit... google gave us 200TB to work with
its amazing how much space psd files eat up
especailly after 30 years
not at all to me π
I have single psd files of multiple GB
yup, the cost of quality
its certainly nice to get layers and high res... can really do a lot with those parts
you can probably print those on a canvas the size of a building. Because it has so many pixels.
instead of a publisher who is like "eh, just use google images"
(and yes, we have some like that lol)
its goes back to what you said about why a company wont fill out the specs on amazon right ......
there is an amazing lot of publishers/companies that simply do the minimal work
like how hard is it to get the specs from the developers... how hard is it to type those into a page detail on a storefront ... do you not want to sell the product?
it frustrates the hell out of me
how am I, as a consumer, know how to buy what, if you don't get the full picture of a product?
you are supposed to find the product specs on the mfg website and look there ... a website that insists on putting their details in a mile long scrolling "text (image)" "(image) text" format
π
to me, it more looks like a scam. Because I can look up the specs on the real website? But what if the product on amazon is a fake.
and that's why the specs are different? π
yup!
or the SAME product is listed THREE times with the SAME details !??!?!
its hard for the actual storefront to currate thousands of products at once, it really is reliant on the product seller (provider/publisher/etc) to provide accurate/clear details for their own product page
When I was looking up fans*, I noticed that the airflow. Was different accross multiple retailers.
So yeah, that's when I looked up the fan at brand website itself. But still confusing as hell.
Means you cannot trust it and have to verify it yourself.
indeed π¦
newegg is really notorious for really bonkers details on products
and they have a 'compare' feature too! and when you compare three boards for example, its all over the place on specs
and nobody really cares, except a few of us, and that's why it keeps happening.
yeah, they also dont have anyway to report content errors to like crowd source
we sorta do, anyone can write a support ticket mentioning a product page has wrong info ... its rare, but some people let us know and we fix it pronto
generally though its ok, if not lacking in the system requirements department
now you mention it, I sometimes wonder if it makes even sense to report stuff
I always think that tickets go in some void.
you wonder on some sites... like when i report a stream being corrupted on amazon prime.... does it GO ANYWHERE
and even if it does go anywhere, probably ignored.
Bosch Legacy Season 2 Ep 4 was corrupted as fuck, and i reported it...
still corrupted as fuck lol
all the other eps in the season are FINE
yeah, Amazon Prime Video
i have an amazon prime subscription... its my ONLY subscription to anything paid streaming
I had one.
im so frugal its ridiculous ..... my normal broadcast tv channels, i get over the air free using an antenna
i wont pay my ISP to 'stream local channels' to me .... lol
they want $15/mo for thost 7 channels
You don't have Amazon lockers near you?
i dont sub to apple+ disney+ mgm+ netflix paramount+ ... all those damned services .... lol
Free shipping without prime
Amazon Prime Video content really depends on region/country. To me, it wasn't that interesting. Not a lot of content suited for me. Also, since I live in Belgium half the shit is in French. But I speak Flemish! And they don't even provide subtitles or nothing. Amazon is like every person in Belgium speaks French.
i do, its in the heart of a college campus, very difficult to reach (unless you go there for school)
oh man thats gotta suck yeah
Just tell them you're a CEO
=p
imagine having to watch naruto in french π
everyone is a ceo of their self-employed business in america !
faaaake newwwws
Like the dude buying tons of ladybugs and releasing them, having to pay 250k
Which actually was real
The Ladybug Raid refers to a series of viral videos by TikToker @arkeslo who in April 2022 purportedly bought and released 100 million ladybugs into New York City's Central Park, purchasing them for $75. After prompting his followers to comment "Ladybug Raid πΉ," he stated that he'd actually released them, was allegedly charged with a lawsuit for environmental terrorism and then fled the country for Colombia to avoid house arrest. The stunt was originally performed in late 2020. In 2022, it was later revealed to be a hoax, perpetrated by verified TikToker h1t1.
Seems it was a hoax.
fun
Mmm isisnt there a dude with a frog army
I also finally have a functional and useable gpu in my rig
1660 Super for the time being wile I try to find a new gpu
Human engineered insects do have all sorts of terrifying possibilities. Africanized honeybees are one example, and we're lucky those aren't worse.
580 is more powerful irrc
what laptop would you guys say is good for school, with a stylus
depending on your usecase
In my experience a tablet with keyboard case is better for math and stuff like that, but if you need it for graphic design or something you need more power
ok, so what would u recomend
I'd recommend you giving us a bit more to go off of
ok jeeze, I want to be able to do math and stuff on it, light and decently powerful
iPad or Samsung Tab whatever poison you like more. Both will be in the same price range.
what about laptops
i was thinking about a zenbook but i dont need oled
I hate laptops with touchscreens.
ok
they're always some 4k garbage
way too expensive and when they have a good price the other hardware in them sucks
oh
Depending on your available desk space and willingness to carry stuff around, a laptop and a portable touchscreen are an option.
oh yea thats an awsome idea, i never thought about that
I believe Lenovo tablets can be used either as a second screen for a laptop or standalone tablet. I have no personal experience with them, but it might be worth looking into those. Or any other tablet can be standalone or a second screen, iPads can too I think?
oh I know those
some of my classmates have them
you know that feeling when you got a really good quality plastic? It just feels solid and all?
Those are the opposite of that feeling
Possibly tolerable, depending on price
oh
it went very quiet in here for a long time
spooky
That just seems to happen someitmes
... no
The socket itself would be half the size of the board, and there literally wouldn't be enough room for the dimm/pcie slots
what would be the smallest form factor sp5 board
www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=GENOAD8UD-2T%2FX550&utm_source=GENOA+launch&utm_medium=11_landing+page#Specifications
Soemthing like that is about as small as you'd get
can you post the link by itself? mobile moment
You could go smaller than that with custom board designed fora specific chassis, but x/y footprint isn't nearly as big of a concern in enterprise environments as z-height is
@jagged snow
Uhh fist my gpu dies. Now half my ram is not longer showing up in bios
This has to be a board issue
I gotta risk it
I have a B350M on hand from a buddie
Don't know what bios is on it
Syas he updated it like a year ago
Resting the ram fixed the issue
Check the readings for the voltage on the 12v and 5v rails
It could be your psu is killing components
Must have been knocked
Lemme check as this is on an alternate psu that tests fine
I can't find readings for the 5v and 12v rail in os
Bur 3vcc is 3.3v?
Use hwinfo
Kk
Where
Found it
+5v is 5.08v
+12v is 12.2v but fluctuates between 12.1 and 12.2v
@jagged snow
This is on my other psu. I will rewire my main one tmr
Those are fine
But I'd be more concerned about numbers under load
Really when I'd start to worry is with values +- 500mv outside of the expected value
Ahh
They didn't waiver much under full load on the 12v rail
Basically as much as the 1660 super could suck back
And that's like barely over 130w
would be fun to see what kinds of scores different high power GPUs would get at throttled power levels
That's just mobile GPUs.
The core configurations might be slightly off, but it's good enough.
Once you know that a mobile 4090 is really a 4080, and so forth.
anybody with experience in visualizing logarithmic data?
The heck you do when there's a bunch of data on a huge scale, and you need to display it in a way that will show cumulative result per time bins without compromising the scale?
heck even asking is hard
lol
I don't have an answer but you made me giggle
struggling to form the question I have had that recently
i just have trauma thinking about that
i understand my consciousness forgot why there was a problem because it was too unfathomable
So, imagine a bunch events. each having some value that easily goes from thousands to billions
there's also a second parameter that is linear, and a timestamp
How do you display that series in a nice timely bins to see how they evolve over time, without giving up on small changes?
it's lacking too much context
what kind of display are you talking about
what kind of app/location you want that to happen
in what program part you want to implement that
are you asking for implementation or are you really struggling with the idea of logarithmic scale ?
I mean if you want to show Y as logarithmic
then show log(Y) instead. done
10,000 label will be at log(10,000) location
derp
wake up to maths... noooo ... brain screams n hides...
brb, gotta quit discord so i can run a backup, or discord crashes my mac π
there are millions of events over decades.
So displaying each one individually is hardly an option
does not change the question nor the answer
if you think there are too many event to show a graph off of it
it's another problem
app, program, implementation doesn't matter - only the idea of how it should look & math behind it.
essentially, i used things that accumulate data into bins, such as density heatmap, 3d volume
that works nicely with linear parameter over time
then it's easy
accumulate it through log(value)
because i can see count of event for each small bin of that param and time, displayed in color
or it's the accumulation that needs to be log ?
all that is setting of your graph software
now here's a trick - each bin can contain thousands of event with pretty different value (lets assume value is referring to that huge scale param).
Is it even right to take a log of their sum?
if you show the sum
and you need the show on log scale
then log the sum
but again, the scales on your thing must match too
there was an idea that i can display density heatmap of count of event per time bins and log(value) bins.
it works, but there's a problem that, visually, 10 events of log(10) seem as significant as 10 events of log(10000000)
it's a rendering problem not a data problem
huh?
that means you didn't log the sum
It's like you were in a car engine and was wondering how make it grip the road
just unstuck your head off of here
the road grip is at wheel level job
engine location is not for that
it's a rendering problem not a data problem
you want to render it on logarithmic scale then tell you rendering software to do that
yes, that example is when there are bins for log(value), and we simply count how many events are in each of them over time.
that is differrent idea from what i'm trying to achieve (which is not defined cause at the moment its more of "i'm not happy, i need to do better")
the heatmap is logarithmic then
not the data fed into it
what exactly you mean by "log heatmap"?
when does the sum happend - before or after the log?
you want the sum of even
so it's logical
you can't throw log at this
but once summed
you want to show that on logarithmic scale
so your heatmap rendering is done with log(sum) for each dot
ok, that makes the scale of value more human.
and account for both the value and count of events
but small question: can i just put a scale of log(value) on y axis?
it's a matter of what rendering software you are using
what is even this question
I can't know what you are doing or using if you don't tell
^
it's like if you were asking me "can the engine support twice the speed"
like what even are you talking about
your car engine maybe
your rocket engine maybe not
Unreal engine will have some bug
i can choose any software if i have the right data.
question is what's the correct idea for naming and scaling Y axes (cause its certainly not just log(value) at this point, but it can be scaled accordingly, and named something like log(sum(value))?... )
that example is not entirely correct, because all math operations can be done prior to passing data to plotting software.
moreover, i can choose from different plotting libraries so its really not a question of software for me, but rather the idea of what i can display to make it understandable and usefull
For me itβs because I sometimes lack what I like to call foundational knowledge. Therefore, sometimes I have no clue what to even ask.
ok so you are definetly confusing your input data, your data processing, your processed data, and your rendering
4 different things
4 different steps
you should not confuse them
input data is : event log and timing database
data processing is : summing up the event per time slices, to get the number of event for some time slices
processed data : the number of event per time slice
rendering : showing that data on a logarithmic scale
the data on a logarithmic scale ONLY happen at RENDERING graph stage
not before
otherwise you are just confusing everything and changing your data (instead of just showing the actual data in some different way)
and that rendering is done with the rendering software, and you still didnt say what software you are using, and you still try to ask how to CHANGE YOUR DATA
instead of how to render it
you do NOT want to change your data AT ALL
so how would you categorize extracting year from timestamp?
data processing, or rendering
depend if you want to use that years for processing other data, or if it is simply a human readable conversion
make the number human readable : rendering
use the result to process data : data processing
Just when I though I had my system stable. It crashed while I was afk and downstairs π¦
I can run a stress test in adrenalin while running a game, doesn't make it crash. So I don't think it's GPU related. Or PSU for that matter (drawing too much power).
I ruled out my memory. So, then it must be CPU. Or faulty PSU.
u done the sfc and dism already?
Like how the fuck can my PC crash when I am AFK in a city. Like I wasn't even playing.
This sounds more like a memory leak or something.
I bet storage
but I had instances it crashed pretty quickly too. Or maybe multiple things are causing the crashes.
I increased page swap file size. Didn't help.
random crashs have a psu fault taste if any data check have no errors
it must be bsod or crash reset/restart
psu fault almost never hang
Have you tried disabling swap?
the crash is just black screen -> boot logo. And I keep reading these are the symptoms of a faulty PSU.
Any I think it's a storage issue. Have you tried tmrunning the game from another drive?
only have one drive atm.
the PSU fault test is, with no specific load :
- operating time degeneration
- per try operating time randomness
- and long term use exponential degeneration
if it quickly becomes worse and worse so it resets after 2 min with no load
then it would feel very much like psu
Black -> boot : is hard reset
the trick is : with no load
with no software loading of any kind
when it's storage it often goes with something trying to launch or close
shouldn't be the case since it's brand new PSU
I had a brand new server class advertised shit psu once
I'm sorry to tell new does not always mean good
like if I run 3Dmark or anything. Shouldn't that make my PC crash too π€
not specifically
It just confuses the hell out of me why it's only happening for this old ass game
never
ok then probably not psu
only when I have GW2 running. RD2 no problem. Hogwarts, it did crash but only game. And I think it was a setting.
when psu it really is random in regards to load
oooo
sometimes even load can make it better
The only only only thing I can think of is this.
Yesterday I disable discord hardware acceleration and I had GW2 running for 6-7 hours straight. So I though, problem fixed.
buggin out again huh π¦
Today, when I was AFK, I had discord open, firefox and GW2. I come back and I see my PC rebooted. There is this 0.00001% that it was firefox hardware acceleration this time.
So now I disabled firefox hardware acceleration too.
crashing yes π¦
My last resorts are updating the bios.
and disabling some hardware error capturing stuff on my mobo.
so maybe I can spot more information in eventviewer.
fresh win install ?
pff again? π
I mean is it one ?
2 months old build.
yes
@night girder is ignoring me
nah it's still running
or it's stuck.
Hit enter a few times
if you clicked on text it could have freeze it
nah, clicking it to make it work.
enter will unfreeze it
enter fixed it.
maybe I clicked by accident. Anyway. That didn't say anything is wrong.
Do a system file check too
out of all this, have you by chance checked your ram is ok?
yes, I did that. Was perfectly fine.
k
dism is like a greater system file check though already init?
are you sure you psu is enough for your gpu spikes ?
AMD forums
Keyboard, mouse, headset and that's it. And 1 monitor.
trash gpu drivers? UNHEARD OF
monitor does not draw power
i dunno how many drivers i 'skip' on nvidia side due to many months of shit driver updates
I usually sparse update for Nvidia and repackage it without the experience bullshit
I keep older packages just in case
so much disk space is used for driver archives lol
and yeah, geforce experience is NEVER installed on MY machine
Oh btw, I get your comment now Frigid. From yesterday. That I should have waited for all 3 movies to be released
You know what I dislike about fixes like this? How will I ever know when I can reenable hardware acceleration if that's the cause?
also how am I suspoise to understand this log file.

yeah, temp fixes to deal with bad drivers... suck
because the issue should been fixed in 2022.
should* lol
and another crash π¦
fuck my life, this is getting freaking annoying.
The screen stays 5-10 seconds black. Then my monitor turns off. Then it turns on and I see logo.
The lights on my motherboard are never interrupted. So I don't think it's PSU.
faulty .... everything is faulty these days ! LOL
who doesn't know that the best place to store your rsa key is in the apple notes app
I was just in my BIOS, and I did a "revert to default". It showed me PBO was toggled from auto to advanced. I don't know why I did this. Anyone have a clue how this could happened?
PBO ?
Preccision Boost Overdrive.
im not sure what that is myself
Same OEM that made the faulty Fractal Lumen.
Similar issue too
AM5 feature that sets a higher power tsrget
updated my bios.
successful! nice
not that it's going to help
I think it's best that I leave it at this today. Don't feel like chasing a needle in a haystack anymore. Starting to get grumpy.
Why does it have to be a full PC crash, so freaking nasty π¦
looks lovely
This is mine at the moment.
Hopefully donβt get bored anytime soon cos it wasnβt cheap

Phanteks NV7?
yup
my friend told me to waste money on a white mobo
I told him to feck off! lol
Wasted money on an oversized white case instead
fuck two crashes in 10 minutes π¦
it seems to get worse now π
and all I am doing is tuning down the graphic settings in GW2 and it crashes
and crashed again π
Lmao. I donβt regret that. Love the case and the fans
But to buy a mono when I donβt need one
Naaaaaaah
maybe thats a catalyst ... lol ... need to overload your card so it stays stable π
I don't know anymore. I know put supersampling ingame to native to see how it goes.
actually thats what was happening to my old 980ti ... if i played like ESO and i was near a 'coastline' where there wasnt much graphical overhead, the card would crap out on the low activity (it was throttling down to a sweet spot on voltage) and the computer would crash
I updated my BIOS, updated my drivers, factory reset mobo, factory reset Adrenalin, cleared the cache of GW2, -repair flagged GW2, -noaudio flag with GW2 (see if it's an audio issue), I did dism repair, I did SCF, ...
and only happens with GW2
This is going to sound strange.
@charred pewter u dont fw whiskey coke?
whiskey and coke yeah, but ......... pepsi .....
IT'S THE SAME
oh hell its NOT!
But is it possible that if I alt + tab, GW2 is put into a lower priotity for the GPU, when I tab back to GW2, I notice a freeze, but not a crash. Can it be that going from iddle GW2 + iddle GPU -> not idle cause a power issue?
because most crashes are related to either me alt+tabbing or changing settings for the game. All GPU related.
true... pepsi works better with whiskey
Fuck, should have stayed with Nvidia π€£
naw, nvidia suffers the same issue if its a hardware voltage issue (like i was having)
and just when I said that I crashed
maybe try giving your card a wee more juice in uh ... whatever lets you do that on amd
for real. I typed it out. Alt+tabbed to GW2 and bam crash
ouch
its that ML code... it saw you complaining again, and it is like ILL SHOW YOU!!!
in my case on nv... i had to give it what, 10mV ?? to make it stable
I am so done with this shit.
Last resort I can do is clean install, but pretty sure it's just shit AMD GPU. Like I am 99.99% sure a clean install wont resolve the issue. This is some graphical shit.
never know, you may get a bad nv card next ..... it seems hit or miss now with the silicon lottery
shame you cant easily find out by having a second amd card of the same make/model to test with
my homie do a ddu
and don't disable anything or change shit it windows. Just download the installer and run it like a normal human being
I didn't do anything π
there's a reason it's called a whiskey and coke
well really should be a jack and coke
scotch
You should also try a full windows reinstall, that was the only thing that resolved crashes I'd been experiencing for over 6 months
I got 2 scotches but they are too expensive for being mixed
rum & coke is what it SHOULD be
Like black screen crash and PC reboot?
I'd switched gpus, ram, cpu, psu, ddu and reinstall all drivers, messed with voltages and timings on ram, cpu, and gpu, only thing that fixed it was windows rinstall
oh wait i'm being slow, jack is whiskey
Yes, and then sometimes when it came back the gpu would've removed itself from device manager and would be using windows default drivers untill I disabled/enabled it in device manager or restarted the pc again
right, mixing not drinkable 'scotch' with black sugar water is not the solution I want. So Scotch pure is my way to go π
in a glencain or how that fucking glass ist called
although, once you put whiskey into something ... the differences are most likely indistinguishable
I like the lime the pepsi brings
i like the coke, that coke brings
That's crazy π
But this system is 2 months old.
Same issue you're having?
No, my GPU stays in the list.
glencairn?
lmao wgats tge dufference?
My PC only crashes so far with 1 particular game. Mostly when I alt + tab to the game. Or if I iddle for long time in high density city.
yeah love my smelling glasses
The alt + tabbing causing most oof the crashes now.
The device manager part didn't happen 100% of the time, and even then it was only for the last two months I was experiencing the issue
and changing graphical settings make the game also super unstable. Then it will crash probably too.
do people actually enjoy just smelling alcohol instead of just drinking it?
My problem was specifically in one game as well
I also love smoky whiskey β€οΈ let it taste like I'm licking tar
"whats the difference between pepsi and coke" .... its like when someone says "whats the difference between 60fps and 144fps" π
Fuuuuck, I have done so many reinstalls of W11, I really don't want tooooo π¦
I can drink scotch from a wine glass if need be, but I prefer a glencairnπ
if you don't know the difference, you don't deserve to drink either
I've spend days installing W11 over and over again to get clean installation of everything.
yeah, it's really a pain. I also think it might've been windows update messing something up
interesting
my old eyes barely notice ... maybe I have an old nose and tongue too, lol
anyway, both are crap. Red Bull Cola π
i burned my tongue once so bad on hot salsa, that everything i ate or drank for a week after seemed the same π
wouldn't that be no alcohol?
lol
well, you give me hope. But I am very skeptical at this point.
yeah wtf
I would have to actually sell this PC if I can't play GW2 π€£
bro mixing caffeine with caffeine
who is mixing shitty tasting adhd meds with coke
isnt redbull just squeezed scrotum sweat in sugar water?
iirc the redbull coke is more herbal so it might be nice with whiskey or it just sucks very badly
sounds like it's either really nice or really bad
an upper and a downer mixed like, the point of that is .... ? same as drinking water π
Cockta > Coca Cola
herbal might be a good description for the taste
nah. It's like menthol and spicy. It doesn't cancel out
Also, how big is the chance it's adrenaline being the culprit?
you experience both
I got all adrenaline stuff on my pc and I got no crashes
adhd makes energy drinks really anticlimactic
was just wondering.
and you didn't disable that game advisor thingy?
Cheers!
what does one even do in baldurs gate
die to raphael 400 times
have fun
find out who destroyed the gates?
best game of the year
Go π§πͺ
although I played 1+2 and 3 won goty and all that I'm still hesitant to get it
3 is TOTALLY different company. It's a Belgian one π
exactly that
if you like slow-ish rpgs you'll love it
And they had divinity 1 and 2. Which were reviewed possitively. And they gained shit ton of experience. BG3 is build on that experience AND they had a long ass early access.
They took a huge risk and won
So their record (of the developers) so far is good.
would gowr count as a slow-ish rpg?
What risk?
bankrupting their studio
Nah, they had early access to gain money.
nah. Game-dev in their size of studio is almost always built on debt
if they fuck it up - bye bye
maybe, the previous games really sold well though.
also by slow do you mean not much action, or do you mean long distances between poi
I mean you don't 360 noscope shit
it's tactical
LOL
lol
BG3 put most devs to shame
so humiliated that they felt the need to riducule them for the new standards they set
that was false btw
well, many believed it
one random twitter account said that
Feels like Larian Studio is making games with the "old" quality. Like it used to be.
yup
thing is, baldurs gate was very long in development and was very expensive. It was a huge risk and it paid off
Also, the game was in EA for ages. They probably released the game when they felt it was done.
and how about Bethesda ... trying to tell reviewers that they where wrong? lol
and not release the game when we wanted it.
I mean, releasing BG3 before Christmas is a tactical move though.
it did and they still didn't make much profit
How do you know?
@edgy hazel not just one random twitter account, fairly high profile developer https://twitter.com/WritNelson/status/1677632079792668673
HAH!
I had my doubts too but didn't have the energy to search π
or the will for that matter
high profile
Read further down the thread, I'm not referring to the main poster
This is one of the WEIRDEST headliners I've ever read.
There are devs from EA and blizzard in that thread
whats a good chromium addon for storing my passwords? a friend told me I should ditch last pass
Belgian Embassy... ok... but wait... in China ... wait ... why is a Belgian ambassador, telling the Chinese how many copies of BG3 are sold?
firefox and bitwarden
don't use chromium
but I love Vivaldi!!!
manifest 3 is coming
heuj.
@edgy hazel here's an article that summarizes a lot of it: gameworldobserver.com/2023/07/12/baldurs-gate-3-new-standard-for-rpg-genre-opinions
switch now or enjoy afs
isn't manifest 3 the one that will say: no more addblockers?
βThis is not a new baseline for RPGs β this is an anomaly,β he noted, adding that trying to reach the same bar without the same experience and advantages βcould kill en entire group fo studios.β
this is my whole point.
it's extremely risky to build a game this size
small indie studio
But the AAA devs that are saying it's impossible are unfounded
They started in Gent (Belgium).
larian isn't a small indie studio
After divinity original sin 2. They moved to America to a BIG studio.
I never said they were?
For a small indie studio, yes. But AAA devs saying that we shouldn't expect this level of quality from their games is bs
it's still extremely risky for AAA studios
I think, you wanted to say: a less known gaming company?
bought a new microshred paper shredder, and tried it out using the manual that came with it .... now im stuck cause i cant figure out how to use the other features
I mean... what is the definition of a indie studio anyway at this point? π
Is it to describe a lesser known company? Small budget? Small team?
didnt we have this discussion ?
not with me π
oh wait, that was on factorio discord ....
get out of here!
LOL
It is bullshit. But also true.
Low budget
AAA devs say that. Because they don't get any breathing room from higher ups and investors when they develop. So if they go to investors, we need more time, they don't get it. Main reason probably why they could never deliver such a game π€£
Also Larian is a privately owned Company without billions of operating cost/year
This is an apples to oranges comparison
I was mainly replying to "But AAA devs saying that we shouldn't expect this level of quality from their games is bs".
Have you played Act 3?
Bro, I can't get a 12 year old game to properly run.
BG3 is certainly not perfect
The problem is that we could expect this level of quality from AAA studios if they handled their investors better
I am not heading into the next game that's going to give me a headache π
Oh no, don't start again with the "perfect" π€£ - NOTHING IS (unless sharklien reads this, then yes, there is a abstract perfect that my brain cannot comprehend).
The whole point of AAA is that it is supposed to be like this
a AAA studio still can't put all their resources into one game
And if they hadn't tried to set the standard of pumping out a half-baked project using the same IP for the 12th time every other year, they wouldn't be in such an untenable position
On the contrary: Portal 2
Sharklien's concept of perfect is imperfect

I am getting PTSD again.
If Larian fucked up their BG3 marketing for example, the studio would be gone and a lot of people would be out of a job. Now imagine that on a AAA scale
There is some truth to that.
AAA companies trying to sell average games as "next generation mind blowing" games. They lowered the bar. Not us gamers. Or maybe we kinda did by buying the crap.
Did Larian do a lot of marketing? I though the EA was the marketing π
But I'm a little bit biased anyways, I'm very loyal to a select few games, and the newest among them is satisfactory. I'm not really "in" the AAA/major releases scene
You have to do marketing
Noctua, sirracha, etc don't do any marketing at all
And they're still very well known brands
Yeah, but I mean. Adds on TV? Adds on the radio? Big posters on buildings or something?
From my perception, Larian is pretty lean with the marketing. Not too much. Not too less.
The game was mostly popular because of word of mouth. The majority of their marketing came from creator gameplay sponsorships
Let the game speak for itself.
convetion booths for example
There were a lot of streamers/youtubers that got sponsored to play the game once and turned it into a series from their own volition
I found BG3 from charlie covering the bear thing
I mean, I just look at the whole pictures. Steam reviews. Journalists. Youtubers. And it seems, the majority loves it.
I knew, because I am a fan of Larian π€£
lmao ... this is hilarious .... https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R2DNBFY9G74ZPV/
did he really expect it to be the size of a small car??
did he never hear of perspective π€£
I had not heard of them. Ive been missing out
If they* orders this, they probably expects a 10 foot dino. (sorry old habbits).
"But the dinosaur was as big as the people in the picture" π€£
nah, like I said. It's a Belgian company. The only one so far to make a name for itself. So they are in every newspaper etc.
Doesn't surprise me nobody heard of em π
How many people out there know coffee stain studios
Yeah, but not the scale like the big ones. EA. Blizzard. Activision. I don't know who merged with who anymore either.
i own valheim, but never played it... never launched it π
good game π
So good i havent gotten iron yet with over 50hrs
I never get far in that game.
i been waiting to play it with my brother, but we are also waiting till its out of early access
same.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA
Vlaheim is probably 2-3 years from release
As if that game will get out of early access
Totally fine to play it now
Eventually maybe
given how slow it takes me n my bro to get though each game we have lined up .......
One day satisfactory will get out of ea too..
yeah, we plan to replay that one when it hits 1.0
Coffeestain is making another goat sim to make sure it happens
lol
Valheim definitely isn't coming out of EA next year, but as far as perpetual EA games go, I don't see them joining the list. .
Who knows π€·
I can host the dedicated. I have one hosted now
Mine doesn't have weird performance issues like rj's did
if we run out of co-op games we will just dive into valheim then .... but theres plenty, and given we can only play weekends when he has time, it sometimes takes a year to get through 1 game
Does Valheim have a road map?
Other than general multiplayer wonkiness. But yeah, dedicated servers are basically fine now as long as you're careful fighting wildlife.
2 biomes left to finish, plus maybe some ocean stuff.
took us over a year to just get through satisfactory content of update5?
And then they release?
playing thru BG3 right now, & it seems to be an amazing balance between RPG, exploration, classic pnp D&D combat
Or are they going to rework stuff. Add more features. Remove other features.
There's no prospect of Valheim changing engines or anything crazy like that, they're not continuously changing their minds about stuff to add.
also i've only come across 1 bug so far, & it was hilarious
help
Nice to hear π
hehehe valheim will get a whole new engine update near the end of it, pushing its ea timeline out another year π
some games are stuck in EA hell.
indeed, they dont wanna stop working on them, so they just keep working on them, and never get anywhere
Guess the game.
Elden Ring !
Kickstarter game or something. Everyone though it was a scam. But it wasn't. The game got released. But nobody likes it
walked into an ambush encounter thru a locked door, & at the end of the encounter, Lae'zel got caught right in the doorway, & the desperate spam of her trying to open the door made me giggle for a solid 30s until i had Astarion unlock the door for her
0.5 million people taking the effort to review the game.
just means a lot of people played it.
Gale, I love you. You're great. But I don't have time to keep reviving you the whole time
you know they do it cause they want to prove their self-abuse is justified .... now if every game all the reviews of people that liked them (instead of just remaining happily silent), we would see more games like that
I see your point? A bit like a arch linux user will tell* us they use it
i see that half a million as a very loud minority of the full weight of gamers π
but i do gotta hand it to them... coming out in droves to actually write a positive review
so many games get no reviews because people just dont bother
well, if steam ran worth a damn on mac, then maybe more people would keep it running too π
I am so bad at reviewing games. I am biased af.
as is, it self-crashes every 2 hours
Mentioning Linux = Obligatory shitting of Linux users
I feel like all the wonderful tools that exist for modern game design have given rise to a problem where it's too tempting to keep adding on to games
Like it's hard to objectively review a game.
"game good, game fun, game be worth it π " - my normal review when i dont feel like elaborating
but... that tells people nothing.
exactly
So whats the point of the review?
but its better than writing a review giving it 1 star because the advertising perspective is off
Besides tell other people, you like it. Without naming the reasons π€£
if it's a fun game, then it's worth it
And that's my point. It's hard to write good reviews. Objectively.
that's usually my quality of review
if you review that a game is fun, that doesn't tell me jack.
π€£
right, what is one persons 'fun' is not anothers, and vice versa... i mean, look at the half a million Elden Ring reviews π€£
My steam reviews: "game make play" - recommend
i don't even necessarily mind bugs, so long as they end up either being fixed quickly or are hilarious
corpse launches are never intended, but my god they can make a game so much better
"it crashes when i click this and then that and then shoot a rocket" .... so dont do that?
corpse launching π
Yeah, but not all reviews are bad.
That's a whole book. It continues further if you scroll.
right, and how many people read that ?
I mean, those reviews you atleast get some information.
Yes I do π€£
That's the whole point of a review in my opinion!
Cyberpunk sort of gets around some of its bugs due to the fact that its quick save and quick load functions work quickly enough (on PC, at least)
Like, if I read a car review. I don't want to read: "car drives, car good" π
i mean if im looking for an in depth review of a new game, i generally head to an actual article written somewhere.... i dont look for it in steam reviews
i'll watch a playthrough if i'm interested enough before buying, that's how i can tell if it's going to be a game i can ejnjoy
in steam reviews i like to glance over them to see if there is a specific trend im seeing .....
I do both π
like a game is 'generally short, but its fun enough' ... i may skip since its too short
or many reviews just saying 'crashes like your mom on crack' ... then i will be like, ah, game needs updates before they get my money
also have to take some reviews with a grain of salt, or 'consider the source' ......
"lul car go bom" ... im gonna prolly ignore that review π
and theres TONS of crappy poorly spelled one-liners like that in elden ring reviews
Heh, I'm excited for Phantom Liberty, but I've also realized I needn't be in a hurry since it looks like they're still finalizing some things.
im waiting till the first 'sale' for that DLC, then i'll nab it
& some games might not be exactly what you find perfect, but it's decent enough & if your friends are playing it, it's worth doing
true, peer pressure
The second review I ever posted on steam:
pretty sure we all have Gmod & would go right back to it in a heartbeat π€£
I even thought about waiting longer for Witcher 3 because it still feels wonky. It's fine, just don't do DX12.
i mean the only reason i got eldenring and tried it... is so many people were like 'omg you gotta play this it rocks!' .... but then i got past the tutorial and was in the real game and found it completely not-fun after that
let me guess, you didn't know what to do?
The games are known for not holding hands at all. They just drop you in a world. Good luck. π«‘
naw, the bad frame rate, the clunky combat, the stupid difficulty... to name a few π
yea, i like to enjoy games, not be punished for buying it
it just rubbed me wrong and i was finding no enjoyment out of it
no enjoyment then i question why im playing it
Eh, it's satisfying once the games aren't punishing you anymore. But you are the one doing the punishing.
It had a steep learning curve for me.
Well, it's normal. Can't please everyone.
i mean, if i look at "ELEX" (the first one), it was extremely difficult in early levels, random rats would kick your ass .... but it at least progressed to where you became stronger to where you kicked butt and chewed bubble gum. after reading some things about the relentless boss fights in elden ring not getting any easier as you proress, and i just lost interest
that's bs. They do become easier because you become better.
Sometimes you don't want to become better
even if i wanted to try it again, there is still the crappy frame rate which honestly DID ruin my own personal enjoyment in a game π regardless what you may think about 60fps lol
Sometimes you just wanna fuck shit up
yall spoiled with framerates π€£
hehehe fuck shit up π thats when i load up planetside2 π
I got a 7900xt. Ofc I wanna be spoiled with framerate
if it interests you, google around for reasons why games are frame locked. It will make sense.
We had this conversation
i dont care if it makes sense for that game, its still non-enjoyable
Yeah, I get that.
π
I mean, I enjoy it π
im spoiled on highhz!!!! ive ruined myself! wish i could go back
Fuck frames. I am used to it.
read this as βshut the fuck upβ and was like woah what the
Played GW2 at 20 FPS, doing raids and all.
then realized i was dumb
Brother I paid 830β¬ for a fucking gpu to get more frames.
so, back to reviews π
I am just saying: I am used to it. I don't care how much I payed. I want to have fun in games. And if Elden Ring runs at 60, I am happy.
i like ot have fun in a game too π and be immersed ... but when something keeps yanking me out of immersion ... well ... i get annoyed
kinda like in hogwarts in hogsmede when the npc pathing starts jerking the gameplay real bad... totally yanks me out of being sucked into that world
then i realize what time it is... forgot i ate, then quit the game and go make dinner
π€·ββοΈ
and wtf theres some moron out in his car parked on the street talking on his bluetooth phone and full volume... uh... does the ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD need to listen to your conversation about hemorrhoids ?!?!
hogsmede was a bit weird, but still doable.
im all typos today
And I get it that it sucks to get ripped out of immersion. It just doesn't happen to me. So it is what it is.
What does suck me out of my immersion is a full PC crash
yeah
btw, after reading the AMD forums. I am testing a new solution. AMD freesync: disabled.
I'd rather kill myself
Oh, I guess this belongs here actually, took me a while... "Seriously, why is it so hard to find a synthetic material with a homogenous structure that has a Young's modulus within 1 GPa of 6 GPa. Hell, the only natural material that I've found to date is Water Buffalo horn."
Hopefully a fellow nerd has the info just stored in their head or knows who's head that is stored in
I don't know of any material within a 1 GPa of 6 GPa.
Hell, I never heard of Young's modulus
Pretty sure that's a cocktail
Nah, it has to do with stifness of materials.
this mf has 6,4
that's stiff
I mean bamboo is at 11
notice none of the numbers are near 6. it just... sucks
tf is this?
Henequen
closest is Medium-density fiberboard with 4
Henequen and Ixtle fibers have an elastic modulus of 13 and 27 GPa, a tensile strength of 13 and 18 MPa (ASTM C1557), and a density of 1.12βand 1.02 g/cm3 (ASTM D3822), respectively.
elastic modulus != Young's
Oh. Nice catch.
The problem is, is that young's is like compressive AND tensile balled up into something else. So while these stringy bits do indeed hold up to pulling on them, they are flimsy as fuck trying to hold something up with them, to put it simply
The Youngβs modulus of the composites increased steadily and linearly up to 50 wt.% of fiber content from 1.5 to 6.4 GPa. - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8618119/
Young's deals with how hard it is to bend something
yeah, composites, i.e. Absolutely not homogenous
I'm gonna modulate a shot of whiskey into myself
definitely do that
Merry Christmas
Why are you looking for it anyway?
What you planning to do with Water Buffalo horn?
Ima be honest, that sounds like too much effort for too little return
WELL BOY DO I HAVE A STOR....
you say that but one moment...
Only one because I'm generous
this goes against my instincts. Bendable + sharp, what can go wrong π€·ββοΈ (in a kitchen)
Knifes have to be bendable
Yeah, but depends on how much.
You don't want a wet noodle as a knife.
Here ya go, try that with most steel knives, find out why you shouldn't do that
Yeah definitely not wanna have a hard blade for that
Ok, then what knife is that dude using?
"What's it made of?" is going to be a question asked
Exactly.
The answer? Water Buffalo horn
ROFL π€£
I suggest you rather look into metal work
If you think I haven't looked into metal work, when looking up young's modulus of materials
What is the Youngs modus of a f150. Inquiring minds would like to know
of... a truck?
Bro, it's saturday night

I'm opening my beer.
Merry Christmas
Absolutely. They wrap around trees real nicely
Okay, then I can reasonably say less than 1150
Nice engine.
Maybe Amelia Earhart knows a thing or two about coconuts
It's a new model. Drags along the roadway under the frame
Funny we start talking about elasticity right after I have to recover that.
I can say that it was definitely one with the tree. My truck can pull 24k lbs if I triple my lines and it took every bit of that to break it loose
GALE STOP DYING
@night girderfigure out the crash yet?
Didn't crash for 4 hours now π€·ββοΈ
Yay
but the same happened yesterday.
so what did you do diff?
So I think it might have to do with population in the cities.
So I will see how it goes tomorrow.
heh
Out of memory errors?
I've been tweaking with the settings and it didn't crash. Today it did crash 3-4 times when I changed settings in GW2.
pos
Long story short: when I play GW2 my PC freeze and hard resets. Or soft whatever. Black screen. And then boot logo. Most of the time it happens when I alt + tab.
when you crash are in/doing the same thing in GW2
k
But not many people playing π
i had found a spot in ESO that would kill my 980ti, which is how i was able to figure out the issue eventually
I also set all settings to maximum now. To see if it's really amd freesync.
Not sure why that was enabled π€·ββοΈ
My monitor doesn't support it.
yeah if your monitor doesnt support something, no reason turning it on
prolly on by defaults
but I can see it causing issues. That at certain points, (when I alt + tab) it wants to use freesync technology, my monitor goes FUUUUCK, PC doesn't know what to do and restarts.
thats a stretch π
or when I change the graphic settings, I can see freesync also kicking in.
I read it on the AMD forums.
"consider the source" ... bunch of AMD people ... ROFL!!!!
ahem ....
come back to the dark side, Letterdief ....
wait is freesync switching between on and off?
No, it was turned on. Now I turned it off.
This is what made me investigate this solution a bit further.
Might be still bogus. Need a few days to know for sure.
the expensive side? π€£
but it's also mostly just the works side π¦
well I wouldn't say that
just expensive
new nvidia cards aren't that much better regarding errors
hehe π
my boss got a 4090
True, I cannot tell. My last experience was 1080.
returned it a week later
Why did he return it? Can be so many things.
it just stopped outputting video
I don't know how much your boss knows about hardware. The 4090 is power hungry.
he got a 1200W PSU
mhm, that's on the low side π€£
That's too much wattage, it probably killed the card
lmao truee
nah it just bricked itself
Did he DDU
he doesn't overclock or is into that stuff at all
yes
he put it into a different machine too
if you want RT and DLSS go nvidia, if you want to be able to afford the card go AMD. AMD people just tend to be much louder about issues
or maybe amd has a slighty higher issue ratio.
didn't you had issues at one point herg?
Nvidia just has much better brand trust as well. When I see AMD people have an issue, they tend to blame it on the hardware, whereas intel & nvidia owners will tend to blame it on anything but the hardware
can vaguely remember you mentioning something earlier today or past few days.
yeah. I thought it was my 5700xt for months. Turns out it was onedrive being fucky when using it over multiple drives
oh right.
Confirmation bias I guess.
AMD issue? Fucking AMD making bullshit products.
Nvidia issues? Dumbass user, has to be Layer 8 or ID 10T
it's like linux users being way louder than windows
Except that's usually the opposite
ngl, if I had these issues with Nvidia after 2 months. Me personally, would be as vocal as I am now with AMD π
yes but you aren't trying to defend spending 2k on a GPU
especially if I switched from AMD to Nvidia for example. And AMD was a rock solid experience.
we'll see how it goes with the crashes. If I can get a stable system. I am a happy man.
else, I might have to do a few more things. Full clean reinstall. And if that doesn't work. I have to think about hardware.
I didn't even OC π¦
You know what also has to do with it? The price.
Lower price, people assume it's lower quality.
If then weird issues start to happen, it must be a "bullshit product".
heh
as a side note..... whatever i spent on my 3080 ... ive not actually had any issues with it, no crashes, no lockups, no driver bails.... it just works. albiet not as fast as like a 4080 .... but ... i mean as a card goes, its been 'trouble free'
Remember when AMD raised their prices for the 6000 series and everyone lost their shit and then Nvidia came with a 2.5k gpu
LOL then people like 'oh ok, amd rise aint so bad'
Yea
seriously ... 2.5k for a single gpu
even a cheap one from gigasmack for 2k is still crazy
Or the 2020 ebay prices which still feel like a fever dream
and that one is most like a 50/50 roll of the die you get a broken card due to a shitty build
gigablows is how i refer to everything they make, and i know i know ... 'model not brand' ... but honestly... in this case, that brand is just junk π
sad evga bailed on nvidia π¦
evga didn't bail on nvidia
they took their ball and went home
big bad nvidia bullies made them call it quits π
Or, as Han put it, βThis? This is easy. Working with Nvidia was hard.β
Bailing made it sound like evga betrayed Nvidia while it was the otherway around.
yeah, when you have to work with a toxic company ... it becomes unfun quick
no... bailing means 'you guys fuckin suck, we gone! BYE!'
bro an AMD EVGA card would have stopped the ukraine war
lol
Oh to me it sounds negative.
Like bailing on your friends.
evga switching to AMD would have seriously made some heads urn
ah, i guess bailing can go both ways
lost in translation π
depends on context π
evga bailing on evga was 'a good thing'.... bailing on your friends is 'a bad thing'
yeah, but I do wonder if it's so bad. How do other companies deal with it?
like, asus ?
other income sources
prolly deal with the same shit from nvidia... i highly doubt nvidia is not an equal opportunity asshole
But like evga said Nvidia is hard to work with. If this is true, it also must be for the other companies.
yup
Man corporationsβ¦
a business that is a pain to work with, is generally going to be a pain with anyone else that tries to work with them
Well, Nvidia has to really fuck up to lose its position at this point
they may be fine being the only ones who can sell nvidia hardware ..... who knows, they may secretely want that, but they allow other companies to make the cards so they dont get slapped with unfair blah blah monopoly blah
they just make it so painfully difficult to work with, that not many DO ... thus fulfilling their own desires as a result
π€· .... i dont know the full extent of what went down between evga and nvidia though ... not sure anyone has the real big picture and all the details
Yeah, they make way higher margins off of the fe cards. If they could eliminate the AIBs, it would mean that they'd have sole control over pricing, just like they do in the datacenter market.
LMAO ... the asus rog 4090 went up to $2999 now
Because remember, the AIB card has an entire extra company that it needs to support off of its margins and it's usually of higher quality compared to the fe design.
the 50x series isnt due out till 2025 right ?
making bank off current models, why innovate?
no competition in performance? raise prices and not make new models?
According to jensen, they're "no longer a computer graphics company" because of the massive AI shift. The vast majority of their efforts are giong to the datacenter now.
maybe that opens up a market / new company
???????????????
AMD needs to step up their game and stop making shit cards π€£ right Letterdief?
the majority of nvidias income is datacenter
crazy
The margins are 3-4x higher in terms of percentages iirc
if they no longer focus on GPU's it opens doors.
datacenter is GPUs
They're still focusing on gpus, and improvements in the datacenter will trickle down to consumers
not gaming
i think if they dont focus on gpus, then the market wont grow because there is LESS competition
According to the rumor mill, AMD won't make a high-end rdna 4 card
poop
and whats this Intel gpu coming along ... is that just a complete pipe dream?
wip
I'm expecting pretty great things from battlemage/celestial(upcoming ingel dgpu generations)
intel GPUs is only for scaring AMD into lowering their budget GPUs
keeps em in check
cuz we all know nvidia doesn't give a shit
nop
and amd only cares becaue they have too
??? I am agreeing with you. Like, nop, AMD doesn't give a shit.
never said that
and you failed the skillcheck
or you
4060 12gb is nvidia giving a shit??? naw... thats just them tossing something out at still a too-high price for the budget builders
nobody in here has any reading comprehension what is happening
as a side, buying a 4060 is 100% a waste of money
it's nvidia
can always resell it
"you cant do anything with just 8gb of ram" β Apple Users
