I glance all sorts of wacky stuff in the tweakers sections of those places.

#

If nothing else you can probably flash your 3050 Ti to its highest possible power limit.

winged valley
#

well laptop 3050TI is just a downbinned/undervolted GA107 isn't it?

gilded helm
#

Sounds right

winged valley
#

Or is the GA107 exclusively that GPU? Too lazy to check myself and you seem to know

gilded helm
#

I think 3050 is lesser 107, 3050 Ti is full 107. Couldn't swear to it

winged valley
#

Hmm

#

Its on a 128 bit bus too

#

That should be able to handle 8GB, if not then def 6

But now Nvidia rereleased another version of the 3050 Ti laptop with Lovelace which has 8GB

gilded helm
#

Techpowerup is pretty good at capturing the specs like this

winged valley
#

Supposedly, my laptop has a 12700H. However the die is identified as a 12500????????????

gilded helm
#

What's the exact laptop?

winged valley
#

Does intel upbin desktop 12500 to laptop 12700 or is MSI scamming me?

MSI A12UDT

WHen I look that laptop model up I see its CPU as 1260P. Maybe there are other configurations? I'm on a Lenovo, so I'm not sure what could be going on there.

winged valley

#

That makes no sense

#

The site at least used to say 12700H, task manager and HWM also say 12700H

This is bizzare

This is what I'm looking at, a couple store pages have the same CPU

Yep that's the site i'm referring to

I'd look for an MSI Discord and ask there. Pretty sure one exists. Now that I have my current daily driver, I only loosely follow laptops.

The Laptop Wiki server might also be good. It was originally focused on Lenovo but I'm pretty sure it branched out

TLDR for the non-German speakers:
A German hardware store (Bauhaus) has a "PlusCard" membership for enterprise customers.
The billing info for orders made by PlusCard members was readily available via search engines, primarily bing.

When they were contacted directly via the contact option on their website, nothing happened.

Once this researcher contacted the state's data protection officer and the data protection responsible at Bauhaus, the bug releasing that info was patched almost immediately.
The results were still available via Bing Cache AND via Bing chat. Another email to those two people later and that too was fixed.

#

Someone on QA site was running Satisfactory Dedicated server on Penryn based Xeon from 2007... Just why?! 2.83GHz max clocks...

maiden coyote
#

Why not lol

twin dew
#

I don't even want to know how slow the game is on that kind of CPU...

maiden coyote
#

I've seen people try to make it run on a rpi4 too

twin dew
#

But got confirmation that UE5.2 U8 needs AVX1 too, and not just SSE4.1.

#

Because that CPU has SSE4.2, but no AVX.

#

Phenom IIs are missing SSE4.1, 4.2 and AVX.
So couldn't be sure which was the sticking point.

#

Dedi needs everything normal P2P hosting needs, just no need for GPU.

#

Runs the factory and the first players near sphere (like SP), and then near spheres for each additional client too (like P2P host)

#

And that second player drops the FPS on the P2P host to 75-50% of previous one if CPU limited.

#

So you want the dedi to be the best CPU.

maiden coyote
#

Unless you just want it to launch on a potato for fun

twin dew
#

Not that good for Satisfactory dedi.
Too many threads, not high enough single-core.

maiden coyote
#

The new tr pro is a beast

twin dew
#

Yes, for multicore loads.

maiden coyote
#

In both multi and single

twin dew
#

It has pretty good SP, but not world shattering.

maiden coyote
#

It beats my 5800x for single thread

twin dew
#

So it doesn't suffer, but way overpriced if you just use the SP.

maiden coyote
#

So like if you had the money for that 10k tr pro.. you could start your own hosting service lol

#

I run my dedi on a i7 7700 I think.. It runs fine, and I've probably got enough headroom to host a second dedi

#

I'm not really sure how many threads the dedicated server wants though.. I'd like to host a second server but not if it'll tank performance of the other

night girder
#

It's start with apple locking their devices with special screws.

#

So one cannot just open up a laptop and clean it out.

#

The pentalobe security screw (Apple nomenclature), or pentalobe screw drive, is a five-pointed tamper-resistant system used by, but not limited to, Apple in their products. Pentalobe screws were adopted by Apple starting in 2009, when they were first implemented in the 15-inch MacBook Pro. They have since been used on other MacBook Pro, MacBook ...

#

They* are stubborn and pridefull.

#

wont admit if they made design choices.

#

wont change their bad design choices.

jagged snow
#

Watching apple ads with my non techy friends is one of the most painful things

night girder
#

I was looking into the iphones. But the specs only slightly chance for an extra 100-200 euro's between models

#

At the moment it looks like an iphone 12 is decent and somewhat in my price range, still 600 euro's for a phone is a lot. I bought 6S second hand for 300.

twin dew
#

But anyways, the new ethernet cable I made worked at least at 1Gbit/s and Intel LAN diagnostic software on 1Gbit card said the quality was excellent, even when there was cheap & old extension block and another cable connected to extend it to the switch.

night girder
#

and it used to be that iphone and macbook had seamless integration. Those days are gone now too.

twin dew
#

Because it is built partially into the apartment structure and the connectors could only be added when it was in place.

night girder
#

Else the iphone wont sync with my macbook πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ So every single god dam time, I gotta enter a pincode.

twin dew
#

For a good reason.

night girder
#

It's how apple fixes their security issues.

#

Yeah believe whatever you want. If you think this is a good reason.

#

Can't fix security in their own OS. Let's annoye consumer with pincode. Nice fix.

#

And the whole thing "apple works with apple" is total gone.

#

btw Maxeek.

twin dew
#

That is universal issue?
With any device?
That if it allows data connection without unlocking, it can be just hoovered of data by just plugging it in to suitable device?

night girder
#

It's dumb asfuck. Never had to do it with android πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ Bro, it's my iphone. Instead that the iphone checks the icloud of thje laptop. And the icloud of the iphone. If account match = good to go.

edgy hazel
night girder
#

It always worked. But because of one zero day we UX went back to mediaval times.

#

Users even don't to recognize it as a feature.

#

"This is a new security measure. Investigators found that a hacker who had access to the computer used for backing up an iOS device could force a backup to an unprotected location on the computer, where it could then be downloaded and its contents compromised. So the β€œtrust” requirement was added to verify that the phone’s owner was initiating the backup. "

#

I guess it's developed by the same Junior kade spoke about. Who write a try loop around a service to see if it was up, and then kill that service over and over again.

edgy hazel
#

yeah plugging in a phone or something like that should always require pin entry for the phone. Everything else is just dangerous

night girder
#

πŸ‘†

tough owl

What about it

night girder

It just cripples their own marketing strategy. "Apple works with apple products out of the box". And it used to be the case. I now have to do more stuff to sync my iphone than 5-6 years ago.

dire igloo

Lexar, thats a name I have heard before but am unfamiliar with

#

What controller/nand does that use?

winged valley
#

TLC SATA SSD that goes up to 8GB

twin dew

That is enterprise gear:

winged valley
#

Their highest consumer SATA SSD is the QVO

twin dew
#

Which has good and bad points.

winged valley
#

Its marketed as enterprise but is at a consumer pricepont

twin dew
#

I have four of them at low capacity for server.

winged valley
#

TLC nand as opposed to their QVO for consumer (QLC)

#

How do they perform?

#

Also I'd just be using them for Lancache on a 2.5G network so if they can't saturate 2.5G then they aren't worth being called SSD's

twin dew
#

550MB/s or so for copying etc. basic stuff.
Don't think I ran any real SSD benchmarks on them yet.

dire igloo

twin dew

I can get one on newegg for like 1k

#

Prohibitively expensive

#

If I can't get my hands on 3DXPOINT by the time i'm ready for it then I'll have to move on to the only thing thats faster which is a RAM SSD

#

But that's like 3x more expensive from what i've seen

Speaking of RAM, a client's custom built PC has at least one bad 32GB stick of DDR4, I'm gonna use it as practice and replace packages on it in order to save it, or at least try to

Nvidia GPUs can usually output to 4 monitors, AMD ones to 4 or 6.
Intel 2-4 depending on age.

If the connectors are there.
AMD usually has limit that maximum of 2 HDMI/DVI monitors.
Unless they use exact same resolution and refresh rate.
Rest have to be DisplayPort from the GPU, can use active converters.

One pass without tests 11 and 13 is usually enough.
Should take 30-60 minutes.

The sleeps are testing if tREFI or tRFC are unstable.

Let me think a bit more. Think my next step would be a clean install of AMD. (Like you suggested ofc).

No matter what I did, I got the same behavior. However, the latest thing I tried (which I didn't really see anyone else talking about) was to DDU the AMD driver in safe mode, then INSTALL THE DRIVER ONLY VERSION OF ADRENALIN rather than the full install.
And in same thread the other way, removing afterburner fixed it.

charred pewter
#

it jerked/stuttered in hogsmede due to the shitty NPC pathing issues ... but other than that it ran fine

twin dew
#

But you can try the driver only or the middle option (leaving streaming etc. out with just basic settings version of AMD Settings installed)

night girder
#

I did it like 5-10 times (fully clean install of OS, disconnect internet, usb with drivers, connect internet, update windows, ...).

charred pewter

btw, i run afterburner all the time (and rtss) ... but i dont actually after-burn my gpu... πŸ˜‰

So either it's the AMD updates already fucking it up. But I have been a good boy and not mess with it.

charred pewter
#

no OC, no UV

twin dew
#

And one point is that it might be other overlays too, not just with Afterburner.
Because the AMD driver on full has two (might be actually same), one that allows overlay access to the Radeon Settings with alt+r by default, and the performance overlay with ctrl+shift+o

#

So try going to Settings, Preferences, and untick the In-Game Overlay as first.

πŸ‘

jagged snow
#

It's been a thing for a while where specific frequencies could break hdds in laptops when played from the internal speakers or at a high enough volume from another source

twin dew
#

Caused resonance of the writehead in one specific (very common) laptop HDD type.

#

That caused it to touch the platters.

night girder
#

my first reaction too, no way ...

twin dew
#

In later drives it has been fixed with logic that parks the head if there seems to start to be resonance happening.

#

Like they park the head if the drive detects reduced gravity (from being in freefall).

#

Just needs to be the exact right one for the exact drive.
And now shouldn't be possible to happen anymore.

night girder
#

I found it interesting as fuck. It's science.

twin dew
#

And forgot that it had been "fixed" on OS side with that audio pipeline filter.

#

But resonances are a bitch.

#

Probably.
But again, that specific one only affected one very specific drive model.
But that one was very common one.

#

But that one is perfectly logical, just bad luck and now known and probably taken more into account by HDD makers.

#

Resonant frequencies need to be taken into account in all mechanical design.

jagged snow
#

They can be incredibly destructive

#

I'm still a fan for some use cases

#

It's the cheapest possible way to store data in reasonable quantities

#

The performance might not be the best, but the durability is excellent when poperly cared for

#

They have

#

But you'd be hard pressed to find 2tb of flash for $25

#

Wd also manufactures their own disks

twin dew
#

But with WD you have major problems getting CMR anymore.

jagged snow
#

Oh wait

#

I know what you mean, haven't seen it in acronym form much before

twin dew
#

Conventional Magnetic Recording.
vs. SMR / Shingled Magnetic Recording.

jagged snow
#

Imo cmr doesn't really fit into the market

#

If you want the speed, you'd just go with flash

#

Since the data density difference is so significant

twin dew
#

SMR just fucks up if you try to write more than the CMR cache.

#

Just doesn't work.

jagged snow
#

Yeah πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

#

For most use cases that doesn't matter though

twin dew
#

Most of enterprise stuff is CMR.

jagged snow
#

For reliability

#

Head endurance is lower on smr

twin dew
#

No, because of the automatic SMR being so completely useless tech for actual work.

#

For enterprise the SMR drives need specialist controllers, not the automatic in-drive thing.

#

And are available for archieval etc. purposes.

#

And the actual data density improvement is pretty minor.

#

But as it saves the HDD manufacturer something like 5% per drive...

#

And consumers don't know better, and it doesn't affect most normal consumer usage.

#

Just fucks up backups etc. large writes.

jagged snow
#

I have an external smr drive

twin dew
#

Try finding consumer HDD that isn't one, except for NAS drives.
And WD even makes "NAS" drives that are SMR.

#

The WD Red base models are SMR.

#

Red Plus and Red Pro are not.

jagged snow
#

It's just stationary bulk storage for a machine that didn't have any more internal drive space

twin dew
#

Same with Seagate below Ironwolf non-pro.

edgy hazel

#

reason being, if you care that much about photos, you have your own seperate camera which you don't need to carry with you if you go grocery shopping

maiden coyote
#

So cmr drives are a must if you want to build a raid array with multiple disks. Otherwise for bulk data storage or maybe even raid 1 smr would be fine.

wide void
narrow folio
#

narrow folio
#

from a Pixel 6 Pro

#

some full format sensor with a good lens may result in better quality, but for me this is good enough

#

wait, discord butchers the pic... but you get the idea

edgy hazel
#

ye

twin dew
#

If the CMR cache part fills up, then you are fucked basically and the write performance goes to unimagenably low level.
As in "wait multiple minutes for few bytes written".

maiden coyote
#

Raid-1 is supposed to be a mirrored pair.. no striping. That's why I figured they might be okay

twin dew
#

And most RAID solutions, even software ones will start kicking the drives out of the array as broken.
And if it is the OS drive even on single drive, you are completely out of luck.

twin dew
#

So whole drive write in both cases.

maiden coyote
#

replacing the drive it'll be a fresh drive which smr doesn't have issues with?

twin dew
#

Works fine in any kind of RAID after the array has been initialized, doesn't need drive replacement, and never is written too much to get into that "CMR cache full" state.

twin dew
#

Which takes multiple DAYS for 1TB SMR drive IIRC.

#

While the drive will seem to be dead most of the time.

#

To whatever is sending the data.

maiden coyote
#

Ah. The tech behind smr seems neat at least

#

There's host managed smr. But that's not something we'll have at home

twin dew
#

Yes, but it needs to write the whole huge block again each time single bit is changed in there.

#

And that block size starts from possibly gigabytes, to tens of gigabytes.

#

And there is just couple of blocks worth of CMR cache.

#

Everything goes into the CMR, until there is blocks worth, then that block is written to the SMR part.

#

So yes, the host managed SMR has its place.
But the drive makers pushed to the drive managed SMR for those who don't know enough, to save little.
And didn't even pass those savings to the buyers.

#

And the drive managed SMR just cannot handle large writes.

#

They also can get fragmented on HW level.
Because they support TRIM and do same kind of LBA to actual storage address rejigging as SSDs do.

#

But while SSDs can access any address at same speed, SMR HDDs still have the seek times to switch locations.

#

So now if you don't write the whole file again each time, and only change some of the contents, you get HW level file fragmentation.

#

In the commands the OS sends to the drive.

#

Not sure on how granular level that LBA rejigging is in them.

btw you dont need 14900k to beat x3d

#

because this is mainly about ram oc

#

as long as you get something thats not a meme so like not 5200mhz on ddr5 but 7000+

#

Obviously per watt performance of 7800x3d is unbeatable

#

and it doesnt need AIO to keep boosted clock

languid gulch
#

AMD's power consumption is really impressive relative to intel

gilded helm
#

AMD is also on a much more advanced manufacturing process so it's to be expected.

#

The Bolt felt good! I didn't care for the suspension in it all too much. But it's not a sports car, and for the price, I might have one in the first week of next year. I've also got a state EV incentive.

languid gulch
#

nice!

#

is it the full $7500?

gilded helm
#

7500 fed, 2500 state, and there's a Costco membership discount possibly? That was new to me and I need to figure that out. It doesn't look like it's up right now, but they told me it might be.

#

I need to wait till the first week of the year to buy for the state incentive anyway. So maybe the Costco one will come back

languid gulch
#

check with GM too, because iirc they'll also help pay to install a charger

#

Somehow still not completely dead even tho it very much should be

gilded helm
#

Should be?

sharp oasis
#

Amd has AM5 now

#

And yet development is still continuing to an extent on am4

#

There's two more cpus in the works as of a week ago iirc

#

Both X3D chips

#

I makes me slightly curious

gilded helm
#

If they're just getting rid of inventory that already exists, it makes perfect sense.

sharp oasis
#

Makes sence ig

sharp oasis
#

Not just marketing terms

gilded helm
# urban tulip its not

Intel has been trying to sell its fab capacity for years. I will believe they have a competitive node when they get external customers.

urban tulip
#

it is

edgy hazel
sharp oasis
#

Larger the node, more heat output per transistor

#

Isint amd already trying to dabble into 3nm

urban tulip
#

what do you think the nm stands for

sharp oasis
#

Nanometer

urban tulip
#

but what exactly in the silicion

gilded helm
#

"no meaning" since Finfet.

sharp oasis
#

Fair

edgy hazel
#

No Masters

urban tulip
#

and monolithic design is still better for games

sharp oasis
#

Ehh

edgy hazel
#

Ehhhhh

sharp oasis
#

Not entirely true

edgy hazel
#

Your data might be a bit outdated

urban tulip
#

intel has no memory controller issues so they can get 8000mhz ez and have good latence between cores

#

what data, zen has still the same latency problem it had

sharp oasis
#

The latency is already negligable

#

I could see something like that on vermeer

#

Where ram and Imc clock are much lower

#

And if I were to decouple ram clock and Imc clock

#

But ryzen 7000 compensated for that issue

urban tulip
sharp oasis
#

And latency between cores is again negligable

urban tulip
#

tsmc has 10x the scale

#

or 50x prob more like lol

edgy hazel
#

Also Intel being 20% more expensive for a negligible improvement in a few rare scenarios doesn't help

sharp oasis
#

When it comes out to benches it has had very little effect majority of the time. So ccds aren't a detriment to prefomance

gilded helm
#

And Intel can't afford to expand capacity because nobody wants to buy from them. Because their processes are inferior. They don't have the same top end performance as TSMC, for which they could command whatever price they wanted. And they can't compete on cost with their less advanced processes.

sharp oasis
#

And honestly are probably vastly superior to monolithic die in the terms of ability to spread out heat along a larger overall surface area

#

Making the ihs more effective

urban tulip
#

am5 ihs isnt so effective

gilded helm
#

Intel themselves admit they are behind on fab technology. Pat has tons of speeches where he talks about when they're going to retake the lead from TSMC in 2026 I think? If they can stick to their development cadence, and we should all hope for that because competition is good.

sharp oasis
edgy hazel
#

No Intel is factually behind

urban tulip
#

well yes I guess if you will use all cores on crappy aio

gilded helm
#

I would disagree that Intel is at a good spot based on their own earnings reports. Data center revenue falling behind client is particularly bad for them. That's why they keep canceling things like Optane, they don't have all those data center profits to fund r&d and prop up other sectors.

sharp oasis
urban tulip
sharp oasis
#

Don't get me started about power useage

urban tulip
#

and once they are built they will rise again

edgy hazel
urban tulip
#

being built

#

either way

edgy hazel
#

Ah so not a now thingy

sharp oasis
#

And amd will have another generation like the 5000 series come out and blast Intel out of the water again.

gilded helm
#

And Intel has one military contract to use those fabs. But they have the benefit of the national security angle to be a customer of the United States DOD. Selling to anyone else is going to be harder.

urban tulip
#

what i care about is this, if you dont like powerdraw or tinkering memory just pretend that this doesnt exist

sharp oasis
#

That's

#

One frame

gilded helm
#

At what price point does Intel win?

sharp oasis
#

That's a insignificant win

#

All that work

#

To dethrone the king by a single frame

urban tulip
urban tulip
#

are you blind

#

or you just saw the left pic and commented

sharp oasis
#

Still

#

Insignificant

urban tulip
#

40% is insignificant?

sharp oasis
#

The amount of power draw and cost to even get the chip

sharp oasis
#

That's a terrible trade off

urban tulip
#

no intel 4 cores will not eat 3x the power

sharp oasis
#

Sure you may be super fucking fast. But at what cost to your bills.

gilded helm
#

I just want to know how much more you need to spend on RAM and the CPU to tie, let alone beat it. You can even leave out power for this part of the question.

urban tulip
#

only record hunters are buying some crazy binned ram

sharp oasis
#

You still can't say a 14900k beats a 7800X3D.

#

As at stock where it matters

urban tulip
#

intel motherboards cost less for same features on current gen btw

#

than am5

urban tulip
#

im talking about maxing out the performance from a game

#

if you want to run stock just buy amd

sharp oasis
#

Honestly tho.

#

The cost and overall

#

Ain't worth it

urban tulip
#

the cost different is mostly in powerdraw and cooling but yea, it is what it is

sharp oasis
#

Cooling solution, cpu itself, powerdraw

#

Intels shitty fabs, and 13.5gen refresh

edgy hazel
#

And the improvement is in a very few select scenarios. Most of the time AMD will still be the better choice for money/performance

sharp oasis
#

I refuse to call 14th Gen 14th Gen

#

It's 13.5

gilded helm
#

If you want to play that game there are other generations like Kaby and Rocket you should subtract.

sharp oasis
#

It's quite litterally a better bin of 13th Gen other than the 14700k

edgy hazel
#

3

urban tulip
#

its not few select scenarios, most games probably benefit from ram speeds

edgy hazel
#

🀑🀑

#

Hello yes here is a comparison 14900k vs bulldozer

urban tulip
#

?

sharp oasis
urban tulip
#

are you clowning on yourself

edgy hazel
urban tulip
#

and dont bother

gilded helm
#

I would say 6 to 11 could be collapsed into three generations. So that's three less. I feel like you could also get rid of fifth generation.

sharp oasis
#

144 is nice

urban tulip
#

better chart?

gilded helm
#

The interesting thing is it's not that stuff like Kaby had no improvements. It's just that they only showed up in laptops. It's possible there will be improvements in laptops from 14th gen.

urban tulip
#

or do i need to mark it for you that this is about how ram speeds affect intel

edgy hazel
sharp oasis
#

Your comparing a 7600x that has two extra cores

#

To a 13900k

#

Seems a bit unfair

edgy hazel
#

Smashing my PC with a sledgehammer also affects CPU performance

urban tulip
#

you have no reading comprehension, seems fair

sharp oasis
#

Dw

#

I'm saying that that is a unfair matchup

edgy hazel
gilded helm
sharp oasis
#

You can ride Intels dick all you like.

#

I donr care about either brand

#

I care abt pref at stock

#

And how can I cool it

#

I've managed to make a 5600 do 4.65ghz all core turbo at 60c

#

And it sustain the turbo

#

I mean. To be fair I could try pushing farther

#

As I'm already at a 3rd of the pref of a 13700k

#

Might as well try to close the gap a bit more

#

I wonr match it ik

#

But mabey I might be able to hit 4.7ghz ACT If I try picking around for beta bioses and shit

#

I'm still surprised how the actual fuck my cpu runs that cold wile at full throttle

#

I co sidered ocing my phone but it's basically not gonna be enough to actually improve the prefomance in certain areas enough

twin dew
#

Mostly Intel 13th and 14th gen CPUs cap at around 7200-7400MT/s on 4 memory slot MBs and 7600-7800MT/s on two memory slot MBs.

wanton orchid
#

I still find it amazing we already hit the 3600mhz sweet spot of ddr4 in ddr5

twin dew
#

As in that we hit double the old sweet-spot?

wanton orchid
#

kind of

twin dew
#

3600MT/s / 1800MHz to 7200MT/s / 3600MHz?

wanton orchid
#

ddr5 at least doubling have some downside
but the downside is none once we have double effectively
