it still amazes me how we can wander around with high tech TOYS in our pocket which can do AR, photos, phones, and all manner of other things....... yet when i walk into a doctors office, they still use super clunky and achiac devices to check you out.

From what I know it's similar but they each perform better in different scenarios. 4g has significantly higher frequency range, but is also allowed to use significantly higher transmission power

#

Imagine if there was no internet and you had to share documents inside a corporation that has more than 200.000 employees around the world. It would be a complete nightmare lol

#

Oh right. I was born too late πŸ˜…

#

Didn't have to deal with that

#

Meanwhile, we have delays in fiber projects because of labor shortage hehe

#

I am not a fiber technician but I would assume there is labor shortage because of low pay and increased workload

#

Sadly, I am not in a position to fix that issue

twin dew
#

Fiber connection making is automated now.

#

Only need few higher skilled people to do the cabinets.

#

For large area.

visual tree
#

I should do a field day to learn what fiber technicians are actually doing. Only thing I know is that they have a fusion splicer with them lol

#

My colleague told me a story about some employee who got drunk, crashed a company vehicle into a fiber distribution node (cabinet) and got fired lol

#

*and he had to cover all the damage he caused

#

And he is lucky he only got fired and not sued

twin dew
#

None, copper ethernet has 100m max distance.

visual tree
#

Here is an example of street fiber cabinet in my city and GPON inside a central office (during installation)

twin dew
#

The fiber versions have max distance up to tens to hundreds kilometers for the long distance versions.

#

Whops, read that as 5km.

#

5e

#

Cat 3 might work, Cat 5 might work, Cat 5e will work for 5m.

jagged snow
twin dew
jagged snow
#

But IMO there's no point in going with anything less than 5e or 6 as it's all crazy cheap

twin dew
#

No, seems to be real.

jagged snow
twin dew
#

Ok, 1000BASE-T is only up to 62.5MHz, so CAT5 non-e fits too to that 100m distance.

visual tree
#

At least I know I actually have CAT6 and not some fake cable hehe

#

Manufacturers will literally label anything CAT6 these days

#

*even though it's legally questionable

#

And it's pure copper I believe, not CCA

#

So, you have cable instead of fiber?

#

Oh, I misread your previous message. Missed the part where you mentioned it's the parents who have cable, not you πŸ˜…

#

Well, at least older people don't care if they have high speed internet so you shouldn't be worried lol

jagged snow
#

hehe that's fast

twin dew
#

How does 50 millibits/s work with TCP?

visual tree
#

We couldn't deploy fiber to a lot of older residential buildings in large cities because most apartment owners are old people who don't care about fiber

#

And you need to obtain at least 51% consent from all apartment owners

#

I hope we completely shut down copper infrastructure by 2030 or 2035

#

And if those older people in residential buildings refuse fiber, we will simply shut down their phone line and they will have to use cellphones....

#

voip has been available for a long time

twin dew
#

The "phone" over cable is already VOIP etc.

dusk rivet
#

is there a pc part picker like tool for server racks

jagged snow
twin dew
#

Yes, ADSL, VDSL.

visual tree
#

You can find VOIP ports on your modem, it's the port where you plug in your phone (usually it's a green port)

#

and DSL port is gray

jagged snow
visual tree
#

Before VOIP, we used dsl splitter/filter

twin dew
#

For DSL, it isn't VOIP.

#

Just analog telephone and xDSL running on same cable on different frequencies.

jagged snow
visual tree
#

Correction: doesn't need to be green, could be any color

twin dew
#

The "splitters" are just filters.

#

Don't remember if they filter the DSL out from the phone output.
Or phone from the DSL output.

#

Analog to phone operator stuff.
ISDN was fully digital.

jagged snow
twin dew
#

64kbit/s per channel, with two channels.

visual tree
twin dew
#

Yes, put between the wall and the phones and DSL modem.
But just didn't remember if the Phone output or the DSL output contained the filter

visual tree
#

Hope dsl filters are extinct by now

twin dew
#

And only 64kbit/s if you wanted to keep the phone working while you were on the internet.
Or some systems could switch on the fly if call was coming in.

visual tree
#

Btw @twin dew I met the most famous finnish person Ahti the janitor again πŸ˜€

#

Yes, it's still alive

#

Not sure when 3G is going to be shut down though

#

Since even modern IoT devices use 3G instead of 4G

#

2G will probably be shutdown soon but I am not so sure about 3G

twin dew
#

ISPs are keeping 2G in Finland but 3G is going down next year.

#

And keeping minimal support doesn't need much bandwidth either.

#

4G doesn't support voice calls at all.

#

It is VOIP over 4G on VOLTE

#

4G and 5G are data only.

#

Yes, but the phone needs to support VolTE, and that is pretty new thing.

#

From near end of 2017.

#

It has replaced 2G and 3G calls for phones that support it.

#

But not all LTE phones do so.

#

And lot of old stuff around with only 2G or 3G modems in them for IOT type things too.

#

Or even new stuff that still hasn't updated to LTE modem.

#

As in old designs that are still for sale new.

narrow folio
#

2g will probably work till the end of 2025 here

pure karma
#

seeing how your online Baldur i would love to see your toughts on this (im not looking for help i dont care about the 1660 super anyway)

#

that happened from letting the card sit unpowered for like 3 months

jagged snow
#

That definitely wasn't the root cause

twin dew
#

That is the one you killed by overclocking too much?

pure karma
#

uh that was overclockless but yea its the one whit the factroy damaged board and then that i overclocked because it was allready broke anyway

#

has no vga or DP output from the factory damage and then lacks performance in general from the overclocking

#

that video is the DP output lol

pure karma
twin dew
#

Thermal expansion?

#

Based on what?

#

Never heard of anything electronic dying from that really, aside from the switchover from leaded to unleaded solder.

#

When there wasn't enough support for the early unleaded solders to handle the thermal cycling.

pure karma
#

room temp may be like 20C+ but the floor temp defedently isent

maiden coyote
#

Pretty sure you'd need like 50C/s to crack a die

#

Or more maybe

pure karma
#

well yea the card would just go from like 0C - 90C in like a minute

#

cuz the case inside was full metal so the case temp stayed at whatever the floor temp was

#

which basement flooring especially basement ceramic flooring is everything but warm

maiden coyote
#

I doubt that could damage it.

#

They cool them with liquid nitrogen.

pure karma
#

yea thats why i originally tought it was just insane wear from the overclocking

#

because the die wasent the failure point the board ended up being the failure point

twin dew
#

Based on what?

pure karma
#

the fact that half the board shorted itself to death and looks like charcoal

sharp oasis
#

πŸ’€

maiden coyote
#

You can popcorn a pcb... but that involves moisture in the pcb, and reflow temps

pure karma
#

my best guess is it simply shrunk enough from the cold to short itself on startup

maiden coyote
#

You probably blew a mosfet.. those can either fail open or close

twin dew
#

Yeah, that was VRM mosfet that failed into short.

maiden coyote
#

Open is good.. closed sends 12v to your memory and gpu die...

sharp oasis
#

What gpu is this

pure karma
#

the scuffed 1660 super lol

sharp oasis
#

Oh thank god

#

I thought for a sec you killed your 4070

pure karma
#

i havent...

#

atleast not yet lol

sharp oasis
#

at this rate your gonna need a new pc in 3 months

pure karma
#

ehh not 3 months maby like a year

sharp oasis
#

Somehow my current parts are In Prime condition

#

comparing

twin dew
#

But usually that kind of VRM dying is from ESD.

sharp oasis
#

Damn

pure karma
#

realistically i give myself like 6 months before i break a game so hard again that it takes my gpu down whit it

twin dew
#

And MagicZ IIRC lives pretty far north in Canada?

sharp oasis
twin dew
#

So low air moisture content, that makes ESD generation much more potent.

sharp oasis
#

Ik its not much

#

But so far I havent needed to rebuild or modifiy my pc

twin dew
#

Compared to for example Florida etc.

sharp oasis
#

in a few months i might airdust my pc

maiden coyote
#

Use a vacuum

twin dew
#

normal vacuums are pretty great at generating ESD.

sharp oasis
#

I wonder

#

Could i try undervolting my gpu again to get the hotspot temps under control

pure karma
#

well then how would it have died of ESD on its own because the case had nerver been openned up (and it wasent broken from the factory) until it broke itself where i then oppened it up for the first time like 3 months after and decided to check if it was even in one piece

sharp oasis
twin dew
#

Prebuilt?
By who?

pure karma
maiden coyote
#

I think esd damage is rare as long as you handle the boards by the edges. That's just me. I'll touch the case and anti static bag the part is sitting on. That's about it

pure karma
#

realistically the very start of the root cause is probably a half as card shortening job

#

cuz the board is shortened

twin dew
#

Or you overvolting and asking too much from the VRM of the OEM Dell card?
If it was one?

pure karma
#

yea its a OEM shortened

twin dew
#

Because that is the other possibility.

pure karma
#

i mean idk

twin dew
#

Because Dell cards often have cut down VRM to just be enough for the stock.

pure karma
#

the highest clock i ever ran on it was whit +20% Core Voltage +250MHZ Core Clock and +200MHZ Memory Clock

#

but for like 60-70% of the runtime it ran clockless

#

or whit 150MHZ memory and 200 core whit none or 20 on the voltage

twin dew
#

20% more voltage? WTF were you thinking?

#

Or power limit of that?

pure karma
#

well it was banging the powerlimiter so i dont think it really mattered

#

it was hiting it on the base clock allready

#

so only really the core clock and memory clock where working

twin dew
#

So again just doing stuff without thinking or checking then?

pure karma
#

voltage yea

twin dew
#

Also raising the voltage too much will nerf the actual performance.

#

Because you hit the power limit sooner.

sharp oasis
#

ive found Undervolting actually helped get better overall pref

pure karma
#

something i did learn is that its more stable on the power limiter than when it isent

sharp oasis
pure karma
#

but then again the power limiter on it is lower than the average power draw of a not OEM 1660 super

sharp oasis
#

That reduced my Power consumption from like 260w to 232w with removing the added 15% and undervolting

pure karma
#

the power limiter is only 110W

#

well only its high for a single fan card but not that high

sharp oasis
#

i lost about 5fps

#

@twin dew Lost 3-5fps with a undervolt. BUT SIGNIFIGANTLY improved Temps and power use

#

went from 220w With cyberpunk bench to 184 and kept Hotsot Under 90c

pure karma
#

consitently allready 15% slower than the average on prettymuch all benchmarks

#

its still plenty fast but it is declining

#

allright im gonna get back to being somewhat productive

sharp oasis
#

How. The fuck

#

@pure karma

#

Have you done that

#

My 6700XT is subject to heavy loads and shit

#

And overclocking

#

And hasent degraded one bit

#

Are you not keeping temps under control or someth

#

Like I've reduced my hotspot temps by 10c from a undervolt

#

Lost 4fps tho but no biggie

pure karma
#

if like 60C isent in temp for a 4070Ti then theres a problem somewhere

sharp oasis
#

What's the hotspot

pure karma
#

idk

sharp oasis
#

Im just confused on what happened

pure karma
#

freight cars happened lol

sharp oasis
#

Bc it's probably my 6700XT is taking more abuse but able to deal with it bc I have everything with proper checking and shit

#

Snd keeping therms under control

#

Like I run 230w peak without throttling on a 180w GPU

#

Fans actually maxed and it's undervolted and overclocked

pure karma
#

well not just the gpu game froze then the entire system crashed

jagged snow
#

You probably just ran out of memory

pure karma
#

was only at 22Gb out of 32GB

sharp oasis
#

I'm still astonished my PC is more reliable so far

pure karma
#

well i think the difrence is im trying to break games and your not

sharp oasis
#

It's lesser preforming but like ever since the new kit of ram I've only had one bsod and that was bc of a outdated driver

sharp oasis
pure karma
#

idk fun

sharp oasis
#

But sacrificing reliability. And longevity of your parts to do so

pure karma
#

whenever i get bored of a game i break it before i move on

sharp oasis
#

@jagged snow man I love having 300fps in certain titles at 98w GPU power

#

In certain areas I'm getting more GPU power

#

Higher fps from the OC + uv

#

@jagged snow I gained a 4% on 3d benchmarking with a OC plus UV

#

Vs just an oc

dire igloo
#

try just UV

sharp oasis
#

I don't see why I'd need to as I'm keeping temps way under control now

#

Hotspot rarely even hits 80c

dire igloo
#

so if it's the same 4% increase with just UV, the OC was practically meaningless

jagged snow
#

And you can't really overclock and uv at the same time. The idea of an undervolt is to push voltage as low as you can at a give clock speed, wheras an overclock is aming for the highest frequency regardless of voltage

pure karma
#

i was gonna say....

#

undervolting while trying to clock does in fact make no sense

dire igloo
#

I can understand the layman's approach:
UV = decrease powerdraw at a given clock
OC = increase clocks

#

So if you combine them, you get higher clocks at a lower power draw

#

until you can no longer provide sufficient voltage to keep up the clocks

jagged snow
#

I think that most people really aren't aware of the dynamic and complex nature of modern boost algorithms.

dire igloo
#

yeah, you don't really want to OC any more

#

unless you're pushing for records

jagged snow
#

Yup

#

Just look at pbo, boost algorithm will take you quite far if you just move the limits and voltage curve

sharp oasis
sharp oasis
#

i know it negates the effect of a undervolt

#

But it keeps thermals down

#

Not afaik

languid gulch
#

dire igloo
#

I think duckduckgo used that approach:
Advertisers put certain keywords on the links they want advertised and if someone searches for something related, it shows up

#

If you search for "buy car in LA", it'll show you links to LA car dealerships that paid DDG to promote them

twin dew
#

Yeah... I'm not running 2200 FCLK with VDDG 0.700V...
Without any performance degradation from VDDG 0.850V.

#

AMD has disabled the control for VDDG on 7000X3D probably.
Because the V-cache runs on the VDDG-CCD0 voltage IIRC.

#

Anyways, current status:

#

Need to up the tREFI later.

#

And need to drop the tRRRD_S to 4.
6 gives higher max bandwidth, 4 gives lower latency.
But that higher bandwidth is probably just because IMC hit more optimal interleaving of commands.

prisma yoke

So i just encoutnered a really weird issue. I can use right click and left click on the right side of my desktop just fine, (i.e rmb causes the dropdown menu to appear and dragging the mouse around while holding lmb does that selection box thingy.) However, those inputs no longer work on the left side on the screen. Theres an invisible cutoff point down the middle tired_jace This behavior has only been observed on my main display, the secondary screen has working clicks regardless of location.

#

What even-

twin dew
#

Some weird overlay layer in there catching the clicks.

prisma yoke
#

What could this be?

twin dew
#

In front of the desktop.

#

No idea HOW.

#

Reboot?

prisma yoke
#

It only happens sometimes tho, doesnt persist between reboots. It will happen one boot, and wont happen another boot

twin dew
#

And you can probably do select box from right side to left side while that is happening?

prisma yoke
#

Correct, it can be dragged across but can only be started om the right

twin dew
#

Some program you have running making such overlay on the left side, blocking everything "behind" it.

prisma yoke
#

I have one suspect

#

The driver for my drawing tablet, but the only thing i did with it was forcing the tablet input to be limited to a single display cuz it originally mapped to both displays at once. Could that be it?

edgy hazel
#

I don't think you limiting an input device has something to do with your issue of a limited input device

twin dew
#

Shouldn't affect the mouse, and being only half a screen is weird.
But cannot know.
Never heard of issue like this.

edgy hazel
#

A drawing tablet is basically a glorified mouse

prisma yoke
#

Yeah ik but thats the only overlay like thing i am using catwiggle

twin dew

Lot of software create overlays.
Usually to display data on top of anything else like with some hardware monitoring software.
But also Steam and Epic stores create ones, not just for when you actually "open" the overlay.

#

prisma yoke

I see, i'll try reboot when im home

Hey man, I know you are a Pole (from dms) and I'm also a Pole, but ya just joined the server and already pinged me and dmed about playing :P
I don't even know who you are, and I'm currently playing solo mostly :P But thanks for the offer :D Just.. probably the best to go onto #looking-for-group-old lol
(And from the other note, I just started a job so playing with someone is a big nope for me)

Anyways, I'm off to bed

charred pewter
#

how come every 'wireless' mouse ive tried... they all have this stupid delay to them after what seems like everytime i take my hand off the mouse to type ...

jagged snow
#

Very aggressive power saving

charred pewter
#

indeed

jagged snow
#

I'm not a fan of wireless peripherals

charred pewter
#

i need to find a new wired mouse for my mbp ... all my current mice are usb-a

jagged snow
#

The one exception is for my laptop, I do carry a wireless mouse w/ dongle for that

twin dew
#

Get USB-C to USB-A dongle for few coins?

charred pewter
#

yeah, was pondering a wireless one .....

#

well, thing is, all my old wired mice i dont use ... are all end of life exhibiting issues, so i might as well just get a new mouse

twin dew
#

USB-C is backwards compatible with -A with simple passive dongle.

charred pewter
#

forgot to bring my usb-a to c cable ... so im sitting here going 'grumble' cause i was gonna play a game, but now i have to do it with my trackpad instead... so now im just like, meh, maybe i go read a book

#

but it got me to thinking ... maybe i need a new mouse anyways, instead of the convertor cable and this old logitech which has issues (maybe?) where holding down the left button sometimes ... on occasion ... lifts up (lets go)

#

so then i was like... well, maybe wireless? but ... my track record with those have been 'delays' and 'unresponsive' ... so ... hrm

#

a mouse is an extension of the hand, and its really a pivotal part of a computer interface .... a bad mouse can ruin your day

#

WITH THAT SAID .... any recomendations on brand???? is logitech still ok? macalley? microsoft (lulz) ?

#

wtf is this 'Lenovo" that amazon keeps suggesting as best picks lol

#

heh, i actually have one of these (popular pick on amazon) .... and while the button pushes are very nice, and it feels good in the grip and is light .... the scroll wheel is HORRIFICLY noisy/clacky/rough .... https://www.amazon.com/usb-type-c-mouse/dp/B08G1YLFQM/

twin dew
#

And that tREFI 60k wasn't stable even in first few self tests of Memtest.
Now on 45k and will leave that running for the night, night.

jagged snow
#

I had an EVGA mouse before this, slightly less comfortable but functioned well

dire igloo
#

Cuz lightspeed >>> wire speed

jagged snow
dire igloo
#

Some razer mouse, idk which one

jagged snow
dire igloo
#

They double and triple checked

#

Because they couldn't believe it either

jagged snow
#

Again, that means the mouse is poorly designed

dire igloo
#

It was consistent

dire igloo
jagged snow
#

The actual transmission of the data occurs at such a similar speed that the difference will be immeasurably small, and on the pc end they're detected exactly the same

charred pewter
#

hmmm

dire igloo
#

It's perfectly realistic that wireless tech is fast enough for the transmission delay to be more relevant

dire igloo
dire igloo
#

Bluetooth was shit tho

#

The same mouse, yes

jagged snow
#

So again, design "flaw" in that one specific mouse

charred pewter
#

the parts about a mouse speed that bother me, is when i go to move the mouse, and it doesnt immediately respond ... that seems to happen a lot with wireless mice ive tried

jagged snow
#

Because for wireless mouse the signal path looks like this sensor > microcontroller > convert to wireless protocol & transmit > convert to usb > pc
And wired eliminates two of those steps

charred pewter
#

wired also doesnt normally have to 'wake up' if my hand hasnt been on it for a minute or two while i was typing πŸ˜‰

#

i mean i guess a wireless mouse could do that too, but then i would be charging it daily like my phone

#

wow, logitech is really big on their wireless ... its hard to find one wired

#

one that isnt $90 ... lol

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

news on the Sabrent sata enclosure: they are going to send my photos and notes to their tech lab for a response

jagged snow
dire igloo
charred pewter
#

see: wireless must be faster because there is no electron friction in a wire to deal with ... flying through air is effortless and therefore much more fast

dire igloo
jagged snow
#

Electical changes propogate at the speed of light lol

dire igloo
dire igloo
charred pewter
#

wait, wireless signals are lightspeed?

jagged snow
jagged snow
jagged snow
charred pewter
#

no, they travel at the speed of radio waves

dire igloo
jagged snow
charred pewter
#

hm ...

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

but ... like ... even so, the different in response from wired to wireless cant be humanly noticeable ....... given polling rates are the same between

dire igloo
#

Polling rate isn't delay

charred pewter
#

its an imposed delay though

#

only at the times of polling does it measure the motion/change

dire igloo
#

If I ask you 1000 times per second, that is completely separate from how long you take to answer

jagged snow
dire igloo
#

I can just be sure that it's at most 1ms between you responding and me hearing it

charred pewter
#

yeah heh ...

#

but with all the other things in the mix... cpu lag, gpu lag, display lag, lag between all those items ...

jagged snow
#

1ghz = 1ns per cycle

charred pewter
#

the only thing I as a human DO notice... is "i began moving the mouse, and the cursor didnt move for a half second cause the mouse wasnt even awake" ....

#

or in some wireless mice ... a full second ... and some need a 'jiggle' it seems

dire igloo
#

Btw, a lot of mice support higher polling rates over wireless

charred pewter
#

1000 polling rate, and 10,000 dpi seem plenty for this old geezer

#

some games dont support 10,000 dpi though, i have to bring it down per app ... (their sliders dont go lower than 1% sensativity)

#

like "The Forest" i have to bring it down to 2500 dpi, and the in-game setting is at 1% .. and its still a bit too fast 😦

#

(but thats just the game being stupid with its mouse controller)

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

no idea what that is ... so, probably not ?

dire igloo
#

I'm at 800-1,000

jagged snow
#

I think I'm at 800 rn

charred pewter
#

the higher the dpi, the smoother fine movements in FPS games are for me ... less 'jumps per pixel' ... hard to explain

dire igloo
narrow folio
dire igloo
#

3,600 no scope: spin 10x

charred pewter
#

oh

#

maybe ?

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

but yeah, that drawing kinda explains it .... its 'jittery' moving the camera at a lower dpi, than a higher one

dire igloo
#

Let's see a precision test but you have to navigate your cursor through a maze

narrow folio
charred pewter
#

i dont know of any the science or essays about it ... its just what i kinda discovered on my own fiddling with settings

narrow folio
#

High DPI, low sensitivity is my way to go

charred pewter
#

yeah, high dpi, and then lower the sensativy really low... means you still turn 180 with the same travel on the mouse pad... but the 'smoothness' of it doing that is much ... smoother ?

night girder
#

what is all this? Who cares if you mouse makes shaky lines or less shaky lines on high DPI? You aim for the head*and kill people. Not draw lines.

dire igloo
#

Interesting, TIL

dire igloo
dire igloo
#

Or headshot and miss

night girder
#

Some games have breathing mechanics while scoping. So even then DPI doesn't matter.

charred pewter
#

hehe ... when aiming through a sniper rifle and trying to hit a head 1km away ... those low DPI 'jerks' is either to the left of the head, or to the right of the head πŸ˜„

#

but, its not so much aiming hit that i like it... i just like how 'smoother' just slowly looking around with the camera is with high dpi low sense

night girder
charred pewter
#

cause when im in the thick of it ... im whip shooting anyways, and its not about dpi at that point

night girder
#

My DPI is pretty low for ages, never noticed issues for FPS might look into it more.

charred pewter
#

right

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

same ... i always had a low dpi cause i was like "how can people control the mouse when its high dpi, this is way too fast!!!!!" .... until i realized you had to turn down the senativity in windows/games if you raise the DPI ... then it all became clear to me. told my brother and he was like 'whoah... this is actually nice' ... kind of a 'oh really?' moment

night girder
dire igloo
#

Will definitely try

night girder
#

and it's a different beast than CS

charred pewter
#

its not for every game .... i set my razer synapse per game that benefit ... like far cry's really benefit from it... but something like satisfactory or factorio doesnt

night girder
#

but kinda I guess. Anything not milsim I guess? I mean the moment you scope and you have breathing mechanics and you need to press shift to hold breath etc. DPI is the least of your worries πŸ˜„

dire igloo
#

R6 is a tactical shooter and falls in the category of "twitch shooters" (whatever that even means)

maiden coyote
#

the last shooter i enjoyed.. sorta was destiny 2.. and I didn't really understand how the game worked lol

charred pewter
#

i actually turned my DPI WAY UP for "Sniper Ghost Warrior" games, even though they had scopes and breathing mechanics ... the smoothness of camera control really helped

night girder
#

interesting

#

I change ingame DPI and all is good πŸ˜› - I still use a little trick someone thought me when I was about 12 🀣

charred pewter
#

ingame DPI ?

night girder
#

mouse sensitivity

#

or whatever they call it in the settings

charred pewter
#

its all personal preference though, what it all boils down too. do what feels good and looks right to you

night girder
#

I keep changing the mouse sensitivity untill I can do a 360 degree turn with little effort. So I can try to duel if I get attacked in the back (but if attacked from behind you are already in a disadvantage).

charred pewter
#

you can still achieve that with a high dpi, and low sensativity settings .... the only difference is that the camera movement ticks are smoother

night girder
#

every game handles sensitivity of the mouse different by default.

charred pewter
#

its a hassle to be sure, especially if you dont have software to manage/change it on the fly per program

night girder
#

So why set the DPI if ever games does it different anyway. I have to change mouse sensitivity.

#

and I never noticed a difference between the two untill I read this discussions

charred pewter
#

its like .... uh ... its like seeing a game on a 144hz monitor for the first time after years of 60hz ....

#

if you dont notice or tried now, dont ruin yourself and try πŸ˜„

narrow folio
#

why do rally cars set different settings on different tracks? Because that is the difference between a nice and a great setup and will change the time you get on each different track

night girder
#

even shroud says: you can go 400 DPI and set high mouse sensitivity 🀣

narrow folio
#

so for me it's worth the bit of time to find the right DPI/sens settings for each game

night girder
#

so I assume even the pro's aren't really arsed with it

charred pewter
#

or someone who doesnt like 'enjoying' the game/world itself while playing a game lol

charred pewter
#

heh!

night girder
charred pewter
#

i bet you anything he also has a video about 144hz doesnt matter and 60hz is fine

night girder
#

Just want to know what the pro's think about it tbh πŸ˜’

charred pewter
#

ie: someone to ignore, completely, because they dont have a clue

night girder
#

since they spend days perfecting their craft

charred pewter
#

they also turn down every graphical setting, and turn off shadows, and disable all manner of things to get speed over visuals

night girder
#

haha shroud says the same as me 🀣

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

for me: i like to visually ENJOY a game ... as much as play it

dire igloo
#

Constant changes need constant retraining

night girder
#

euh what Fireworker? Pretty sure they find the sweet spot in every game and then start practicing.

dire igloo
#

Which is also why a lot of RL pros and coaches tell you to not constantly change camera settings

charred pewter
#

but if i was in a esports, competition ...... i would be trying to find whats the fastest way to kill another player, and not give 2 shits about anything 🀷

dire igloo
night girder
#

and calibrating the mouse can take days.

#

and also, who the hell doesn't do this incremental in small changes?

#

I don't go from 1.0 -> 2.0 for mouse sensitivity. I play a day with 1.1 and then 1.2 untill I find a sweet spot.

charred pewter
night girder
#

Small changes and your muscle memory should be able to adjust quickly.

charred pewter
#

it was like when i launched up The Forest, and its mouse control was JACKED, and i had to adjust the dpi down because the game itself couldnt support it with its in-game sensativity settings

#

also why i change keybindings so that 'crouch' is on 'C' instead of 'ctrl' LOL

night girder
#

couch? πŸ˜„

narrow folio
#

crouch to the couch, correct πŸ’―

charred pewter
#

and 'R' is for 'R'eload damit ... not F or G

night girder
#

Wanted to know what game you are playing to bind the couch to C haha πŸ˜„

#

Maybe the Sims haha 🀣

dire igloo
charred pewter
#

crouch ...

narrow folio
#

my base setup is to be able to do a 360 without moving my arm

dire igloo
#

I always move crouch to ctrl

charred pewter
#

my pinky doesnt work with ctrl enough to have it as crouch ...

night girder
dire igloo
#

I ain't that fckn flexible

night girder
#

x = prone, c = crouch, ctrl + mouse wheel to adjust my character height in Tarkov. (you can set your character between standing and crouching with fine control)

charred pewter
#

if i have to lift to 180 .. then i got it set wrong

dire igloo
#

Tho I do put spring on shift and crouch on Ctrl for Minecraft

night girder
#

Have you played Arma III? 😏

charred pewter
night girder

So many keybinds that you have little options to play around with.

#

every key combination does something in that game. I never got into it. Too high learning curve.

dire igloo

night girder

some stuff is just a bit weird/janky on the PC, and I have a full keyboard and only a few buttons are used since well... it's made for a controller

charred pewter

yeah, rdr2 is also a rockstar game, and their UX has always been shit across everything they have made

night girder
narrow folio

never played it myself, but it does look awesome

charred pewter
#

you just 'get used to it' ...

night girder
# charred pewter you just 'get used to it' ...

same, buddy of mine was playing starfield. I watched and was thinking... this is just fallout/elder scroll but in space. Same engine. Same controls. Same facial expressions. Everything is the same. Except. Spaaaaaace

charred pewter
#

but for sure, i have to invest my time into a rockstar game and not play ANY other game at the same time because of how screwy the controls are in rockstar games. it messes with the muscle memory

narrow folio
night girder
#

I think it's the engine from fallout 2 or something haha.

#

They are trying to get modern era out of an old engine and it shows...

charred pewter
#

starfield is a space based rpg ... its good, but its not like the end-all-be-all space genre killer game of a lifetime ... just go into it as 'space rpg, it will be fun, just dont focus on the silly things'

night girder
narrow folio
#

the gamebryo engin is ancient, but always get a ton of makeup to be pretty enough for the next deal

charred pewter
#

but if you wanna go into a game where you spend all your time shooting lights out, and bashing computer screens, and breaking windows .... no, starfield is not for you, go play gta4/5

night girder
#

You don't get any vehicles when you land on a planet.

#

so you have to walk slowly over the planet. and then walk all the way back to your ship.

charred pewter
#

🀷 its an rpg

narrow folio
#

maybe I'll give it a try when all the dlc are out and it's on sale for 10-20 bucks

night girder
#

Well, have fun with it frigid, I am not going to waste my time πŸ˜›

charred pewter
#

i basically walked everywhere in Hogwarts, cause it was fun to do ... only used the broom when needed, and generally avoided fast travel .... cause like ... it was an rpg adventure

night girder
#

But Tod already said they don't want to add vehicles to the planet.

#

Because ... the engine can't handle it 🀣

charred pewter
#

not all games are for everyone πŸ˜‰

#

sometimes i like to just waste 200 hours in an RPG ....

night girder
#

True, but there is talk on the internet Frigid. Something something overhyping a game... something something not delivering (again).

#

and I just agree. They overhyped it again.

charred pewter
#

i dont care what people think about a game, i care what i think about the game and if i personally can find enjoyment in it πŸ˜„

#

(plus it was free, so, no complaints)

night girder
#

I listen to other people, just to get a feel.

#

Only live so long. Can't waste all my time testing out stupid shit.

#

Like if a movie is 0/100 (10000 critics reviewed it), would you watch it?

charred pewter
#

yeah, i try to avoid hype or 'buzz' about a game ... its more fun to go into something completely unawares with zero expectations or notions

night girder
#

but I also understand you, sometimes you have to give something a try and maybe you will really enjoy it.

charred pewter
#

the only time i read reviews, is for physical stuff im buying like hardware, or appliances

night girder
#

Oh, I look up reviews for almost everything. Especially movies.

charred pewter
#

movies, books, games .... to me seem so subjective, its hard to know what "I" might actually like. I mean... people raved about ELDEN RING, and i tried it, and i absolulty think the game is 100% shit

night girder
#

Too many crap movies/games. So reviews help me weed out the bad ones πŸ˜„

edgy hazel
#

hehe weed

narrow folio
#

my last 'just give it a try, well that was rather unexpected but nice' was into the coreπŸ‘

night girder
#

But it does increase the chance you will like it.

#

Again, if a movie is 90/100 with a lot of reviews. Then the chance is just higher it's a good movie.

charred pewter
#

while i do glance at the '5 star rating' on amazon prime video .... and if something is 2 stars overall ... i might pass ...

#

depends on what it is though ... if its made by Gravitas ... yeah, definitely pass

#

but then i cant go by 5 star overall either, cause it could be some pile of shit feel-good-current-issues BS that actually has no escapism at all in it, and i will give it a 1 star when im done watching it having wasted 2 hours of my life

night girder
#

but again, liking something is subjective so not a science. But my philosophy is, I try to avoid wasting a lot on time on bad stuff πŸ˜„

charred pewter
#

yup

#

im finding a lot of things I absolutely dislike... are what a lot of people "like" (because they feel forced to like it or they are shunned publically) ...

narrow folio
#

some things are very special and will not be for the most of the casuals, but will be worth soo much for a small niche of players.
Hard to find, but totally worth it if it matches the personal taste

night girder
#

True.

charred pewter
#

yeah ... and some have a cult following, like elden ring

night girder
#

A lot of movies that are shown on those festivals, like Cannes, I don't like them always πŸ˜’ And they do win prizes πŸ˜’

charred pewter
#

its a niche player, but everyone in tht niche felt like they had to give their thumbs up and make it an 'overwhelmingly positive' reviewed game πŸ˜„

night girder
charred pewter
#

hehe

#

nothign wrong with that...

#

i gave it a go, but i just didnt like it at all, from performance, to functionality ......... i'll go spend 200 hours in rdr2 instead LOL

night girder
#

It's natural, FromSoftware earned the cult with all their previous games. So the hype for Elden Ring is big. I haven't played it. But I am looking forward to it. After RDR2 it's probably elden ring.

charred pewter
#

who knows if i will ever play Starfield .... maybe in 1-2 years after they 'fix' and 'add' to it

night girder
#

And then you have that writer... from Game Of Thrones. He worked on Elden Ring too. So even more hype.

charred pewter
#

but 'right now' the game runs too sluggish/crappy

night girder
charred pewter
#

doesnt matter! even 4090 players gripe

night girder
#

Oh noes 😦

#

I am so happy with RDR2, upscaled, all ultra graphics (+ ray tracing) and 60-100 FPS πŸ˜„. 1080p though.

charred pewter
#

then you have blind fanbois all "but 20fps in the big city is fine, you dont need 60fps"

narrow folio
#

Transistor was a nice game for me because the story and art was great

night girder
charred pewter
#

yeah, rdr2 ran quite well for me when i played the intro sequence.....

night girder
#

I though all games had to run at 60 FPS on PS5

charred pewter
#

yeah, thats a console though.... port to pc is shit

night girder
#

so they butchered the optimization 😭

charred pewter
#

same was with Hogwarts... was fluid and fine on xbox, but the pc port was a stuttery fuckfest

night girder
#

jeez, that's another title I wanted to play.

narrow folio
#

easier to optimize for fixed hardware

night girder
#

Maybe by the time I play them they are patched. #copium

night girder
charred pewter
#

with Hogwarts, i just avoided the town during the day, and the castle during the day .... the problem is the NPC code is bad, and the more NPCs 'awake' and around, the worse the stutters get

narrow folio
#

company doing the console2PC port

charred pewter
#

LOL!

night girder
#

When was that frigid?

charred pewter
#

but i 100% hogwarts.... it is a very fun game, with voice acting and cutscenes you actually want to sit through and not skip

charred pewter
#

recently

#

finished it last week? two weeks ago?

night girder
#

and it ran like shit?

#

settings?

#

1440p?

charred pewter
#

maxed settings except ray trace (i personally saw no different with RT on, so i turned it off) ... it runs smooth/good when there arnt many NPCs around

#

its the NPC code which has nothing to do with the graphics

night girder
#

can you kill NPCs? 😏

charred pewter
#

only enemy NPCs

#

i was 120-144fps most the time, but the 'hiccups' (or stutters) were in areas with npcs, and didnt affect the framerate, but more of just ... hitching ... annoying glitch, most like npc pathing issues with the cpu or something i dunno

night girder
#

Hogwarts Legacy offers players the option to reduce population density. And doing so will assist in reducing the stutters that players face.

charred pewter
#

i had it to "low"

#

(lowest)

night girder
#

Now I am curious. I am going to wait for steam sale though. Not want to waste too much money on this game after hearing this.

charred pewter
#

but Hogsmede is filled with npcs regardless ... and that town is a hitchfest during the day

night girder
#

I will keep you posted. Wintersales probably.

charred pewter
#

πŸ˜„

#

afterawhile i got used to it ... turned a blind eye ... went about my way

#

total time i spent though to get 100% achieves/completion is 110hours

night girder
#

I know that feeling (my old PC). But I was hoping to have a smooth experience with this new build.

charred pewter
#

my main character was Ravenclaw... then i had to make three other characters for each house to get the last 3achievements

night girder
#

I might try to 100% rdr2 but the online ones pff

charred pewter
#

my main πŸ™‚

night girder
#

that hair looks beautifull

charred pewter
#

was a fun game

night girder
#

it's so sharp you can cut steel with it 🀣

charred pewter
#

im messing in the forest right now, but then i will head into rdr2 .... i expect rdr2 to take a year to finish =p

night girder
#

maybe you will not like it

charred pewter
#

i liked the intro

night girder
#

it's a different beast of a game, nothing like the intro.

charred pewter
#

i'll still enjoy it

night girder
#

wait, that's not true.

#

The intro is only a part of the whole experience, let me phrase it like that. Don't want to spoil.

charred pewter
#

im a sucker for 'pointless things to do in an open worldish game'

night girder
#

Oh, you will love it then I think πŸ˜„

charred pewter
#

i mean, i enjoyed gta4 and 5 despite the playable characters were all trash

night girder
#

Well, this game is more rooted in nature. And GTA is more a city game.

#

but other than that, mostly the same yes.

charred pewter
#

heck, even if it doesnt have fast travel, i would prolly have fun in it =p

#

but if im dying every two minutes from just some random npc, and having to start the game all over each time ... naw, i wont enjoy it

night girder
#

nah it's not like that.

#

It's the same as GTA.

charred pewter
#

but western

night girder
#

Did you finish 100% hogwarts with a guide?

charred pewter
#

guide????

night girder
#

like a steam guide, achievement guide.

charred pewter
#

uhh .... πŸ€”

night girder
#

because RDR2 100% blind looks very daunting to me πŸ˜„

charred pewter
#

i think i looked up one achievement .... uhhh maybe, maybe not, i cant recall which one though

#

no, maybe not ... i think i looked up "cant get into girls side of the dorm" ... cause there were treasure chests showing up over there i couldnt reach because i was a boy character

night girder
#

if you want to run it blind, prepare to spend a lot of hours

charred pewter
#

but if you play a girl character, you can reach all chests even on the boys side because they are allowed

#

yeah, i usually run all games blind

#

unless i hit a point where its like 'is this broken?'

#

like in The Forest i had to look up why I cant seem to move a piece of furniature ..... turns out you just CANT

#

sorry, i know all of this is NOT tech-talk

narrow folio
#

I sometimes look ahead in quest choices on a wiki to not run into unwanted arches / use the optimal path.

charred pewter

some games in the past i was so hell bent on choosing the 'right path' that i would look up the questlines n stuff so i didnt 'make a mistake'. ..... but nowadays, im like ... well, screwit, im doing this, and if it bites me in the ass, i'll just deal later

#

i have to try and put my moral compass on the backseat

#

"just enjoy the game... fly by the seat of your pants!"

#

really curious what sabrent is gonna say about the missing capacitors and apparent unstability of their new version sata enclosures

hoping its like 'a bad batch' that went out ... cause the two i got were only 16 digits different in serial number

wanton orchid
#

if you can't trust the game calculation, just set the game to 1:1 and tweak your mouse "dpi"

but no software can make up for the dpi
especially for small movements, and especially if it's real dpi (not fake f/real_dpi)

and even at home 200/20 is what I get, 400/40 would cost 15€ more, but could be worth it. 1000/50 would cost way too much for the gain

I would say 200/20 isn't that bad for general use

charred pewter
#

ouch

#

im just surprised by the '10' upload with a 230 download

major lopsided

#

my original dsl when i moved to where im at:
9/20/2012
Download Speed: 8453 kbps (1056.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 844 kbps (105.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 33 ms

#

it then ended up as:
7/7/2022
PING 20 ms
DL 27.7 Mbps
UL 2.8 Mbps

#

before i moved to fiber ...

#

so yeah .... i guess 230/11 isnt really all that bad considering

#

i guess my perspective got blurred when i went to:
7/30/2023
PING 1 ms
DL 651.1
UL 326.4

Yes, wired signal will be tiny bit slower than wireless signal over same distance, if you discount the transmitter and receiver processing latencies etc.
But the difference over less than 5m distance the mouse will have is so insignificant that it isn't relevant.
And if the wired mode is noticeable slower, then it is implementation fault.

twin dew
#

My mouse DPI is set to be fine at 1:1 on Windows desktop.

#

Because the Windows mouse "sensitivity" slider is just stupid on how it is implemented.

#

If you go one step down from the default 1:1 (1 pixel of movement per 1 tick of mouse movement), you will have your cursor movement start ignoring some of the ticks, and moving single pixel on others (ratio depends on the setting).
And if you go up, you will first IIRC start to move 1 pixel on every other tick and 2 pixels on the others.
And then to 2 pixels every tick, and so on.

#

So everything but the default 1:1 is just unusable.

twin dew
#

Whops, read wrong, not bottom but side cooling as the other option for PSU.

#

But there is reason why rack cases usually don't use standard ATX etc. PSUs

twin dew
#

One possibility is that the wired connection was running at USB default 125hz polling rate, and the wireless was 500+hz.

wanton orchid
twin dew
#

Nah, if the USB dongle could go to higher polling, it was just implementation problem.

#

My wired mouse can do 125Hz, 500Hz or 1000Hz by just selecting on a button under the mouse.

wanton orchid
#

?

twin dew
#

Nothing touched on Windows side.

#

No special driver, no program etc.

wanton orchid
#

it is on windows side

twin dew
#

No, the device can ask for specific rate.

#

In the USB device descriptor that it sends.

wanton orchid
#

and it's Windows to deliver

twin dew
#

Yes, and it delivers fine.

wanton orchid
#

not in windows 11 on wired apparently

twin dew
#

Ok, no idea about Win 11, works fine on Win 10.

wanton orchid
#

yes

twin dew

Windows on GUI computers (so my desktops and laptop), Text only Linux on the server and firewall.

wanton orchid
#

except for graphic driver

twin dew
wanton orchid
#

the version I tested is July

#

last one

twin dew
wanton orchid
#

the only way it can report it with packets without lowering the effect too much is embedding mouse event timestamps and putting them as a list

#

anything else with greatly shut down the actual resolution

#

and for games 125 is very much too low
so I expect they were talking about "background events"
but they also decreased it for foreground events as it's only 3.2ms now instead of 1ms

#

the only polling rate that is fine is 1000 and maybe 500
250 and 125 is only ok for not mouse focused applications
like editors and web browsers

twin dew
#

Something VERY weird happened!
The UEFI booted in safe mode because failed memory training!
First ever on any AM4 or AM5 system I have seen.

The only really notable differences i noticed were on win11 were basically just visuals and I.. really like the middle oriented tool bar hehe

I would like to get the backend changes without the UI changes.

But with the 23H2 re-adds I can actually switch if I want to.

but yeah, im always right-clicking the taskbar to bring up task manager so i can adjust affinity for those games that cant understand my e-cores lol

dire igloo
prisma yoke
#

oh shit-

#

You are awesome

charred pewter
#

now, something i found i DONT like about win11 ..... is general right-clicking files, a lot of the more useful stuff is under a secondary 'more shit' selection, which seems pointless to me why they did that

night girder
#

yeah

prisma yoke
night girder
#

microsoft likes to do stuff like that

#

same with the settings vs control panel

#

even in W11 you still have two places to configure it.

charred pewter
#

i can never find where to ajust sound settings right ... how many different panels or windows are there πŸ˜„

night girder
#

hell, you can probably configure windows in 100 seperate places.

prisma yoke
#

Right click a file > show more options > rename
why?
Why not just right click>rename

charred pewter
#

or properties under those, or extra settings, or mixer, or

night girder
#

doubt even Microsoft knows em all.

charred pewter
#

problem is if they got rid of any one location to consolidate them all to a nice organized singular location ..... ALL the people who recalled how to configure something in any of those many other locations, will bitch

night girder
#

that's a stupid argument to keep legacy features forever.

charred pewter
#

yup !

night girder
#

microsoft does it too with powershell, they keep older versions (with security risks) installed because of backwards compatibility of scripts.

charred pewter
#

Microsoft: "Eh, it all works... leave it in. We dont want to remove functionality or remove backwards compatibility and be like Apple"

night girder
#

In my opinion, they should do that for a year or two and then pull the plug. Python 2 made the same mistake. It took YEARS untill they pulled the plug out of python 2 and force people to switch to 3.

#

if they keep doing this illogical stuff, we would still have features from the 90's for "backwards compatibility".

#

and all these security patches MS pushes out each day gives a false sense of security since they have all those old features enable making the attack vector for windows massive.

charred pewter
#

yeah... but ... things still work even in win11 that were released back in win95 days πŸ˜„

#

try saying that for the 80% of apps that have all died on macos because apple was like 'meh, backwards compatibility'

night girder
#

Yeah, and it's leaky AF. Like I said few days ago. The printer service can give hackers root access to a PC. That's how leak this ship is.

charred pewter
#

πŸ˜„

#

you dont have your pc behind a firewall ? hehehe

night girder
#

You cannot have good security + backwards compatibility. Because old code is just insecure. Technology changes.

night girder
