wanton orchid
#

so "hasResult" does not report positively if error
but then I'm afraid of good no result
so the opeartion succeed with no report, so it does not have result, but does not have error either

night girder
#

hasResult: false, hasError false, hasCompleted true ?

#

add extra flag?

#

or hasRun or whatever.

wanton orchid
#

I'm afraid of "well then it means everything is fine" but it's error
maybe then one should not rely on "hasResult" anyway as they are actually NOT expecting any
so they should just use "hasError" anyway no matter what "hasResult" says

#

note in the end people can always open the data and check what's inside if there is anything error or not

#

so thank you, no result when error seems the good way πŸ‘

night girder
#

Not sure what you up to πŸ™‚

#

But honestly, there is not always a correct way of coding. Just code to your own needs of the needs of people.

#

And it's almost impossible to read the future, so coding future-proof in a bubble is impossible. If you want feedback from other people, only making your code open source is the way. And then take feedback and modify code.

#

Just saying, it doesn't have to be perfect from the start whatever you code πŸ˜‰

wanton orchid
#

I'm asking logic, the thing is : if the logic is good/provide the most natural informations, then "workarounds" are very easy to code
in the other way it is not possible, and any workaround will soon become very nasty

night girder
#

nasty in the sense it takes shit ton of time and you will break your code, yes. That's why you write tests πŸ˜‰

wanton orchid
#

nasty as in can be very inoptimized AND unintuitive

night girder
#

My more mature private projects even have tests, so I can just refactor whatever I want. Ran the tests, everything green and I continue.

wanton orchid
#

noerror noresult : success
error (noresult)
result (noerror)

#

seems like fitting

#

:D

night girder
#

if not error = succes πŸ˜›

#

all the rest doesn't really matter it seems πŸ˜„

wanton orchid
#

yes I was thinking of than and editing

night girder
#

but now I am nitpicking πŸ™ˆ

wanton orchid
#

but finally what I wrote programmatically works as the just result line is below and says noerror

#

anyway, it looks nice like that

#

and I wrote the checks in a efficient way

#

so I'm happy time to use that now

#

I would not report anything only if there is nothing to report

#

and I still have the empty result which is considered result still

#

so Error / NoError / EmptyResult / Result
possible states

#

(getData should not possibly return NoError as it should give out result even if empty one
so this is not a very good example but I'm happy with it)

charred pewter
#

got my laptop back ... UPS just left it on the porch, no knock, no signature .... yeah, a nice box with a giant apple logo sitting on a porch in the urban city ....

narrow folio
#

is the laptop working as intended now?

charred pewter
#

wont know for a week until i go to restart it

narrow folio
#

Oh

charred pewter
#

but outlook is bleek because its the exact same case (same serial, even had my sticker left on the camera) ... and the screws have not a SINGLE dent or marring on them

#

so im skeptical they 'fixed' anything ... they just wiped it clean and installed Sonoma on it (when i had Monteray)

jagged snow
#

Could've been an os-level bug

charred pewter
#

the laptop wasnt reaching the os

#

the entire problem was before it even began to access the file system

#

basically, it was black screening before it even KNEW there was an os on it πŸ˜„ LOL

#

(according to the tech at the genius bar)

charred pewter
#

yeah

winged valley
#

@charred pewter What model macbook?

charred pewter
#

given the behavior (twice) of this thing, it needs a new motherboard

winged valley
#

What year?

charred pewter
#

M1 MAX 16" MBP ... uh year ...

night girder
charred pewter
#

no clue... its going through setup right now

winged valley
#

Read the model number on the bottom case. Its formatted as A####

night girder
#

And it's not that apple has an option with their design. They have to replace almost the whole mobo for trivial stuff.

charred pewter
#

right, ram, ssd, networking, audio even, its all burned into the logicboard

winged valley
#

If this is the model that I think it is, then you're screwed and need to either replace the mobo (which is serialized btw) or take it to a really really good repair shop that does board level repair.

Why? Your SSD is just a couple of NAND chips soldered on and get this, Apple decided to put the BIOS into the SSD instead of on a separate SPI ROM.

Which means - Your SSD died due to wear and needs to be replaced. This is why your Macbook won't POST/boot up

#

Again - only if this is the model that I'm thinking of

night girder
#

Yeah, that's been posted in here before by Kade.

winged valley
#

Do NOT take it to the genius bar (or any other apple certified shop) because the best they can do is replace the mobo which will more than likely cost you more than getting it repaired

night girder
#

He also had that issue I believe and got rid of his macbook.

charred pewter
#

sorry, text is tiny, and its doing something, hard to lift it up and read it

night girder
#

my mobo got replaced for free πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

#

because Apple said they fucked up. And replaced it.

winged valley
#

You either had applecare or it somehow fell under warranty which never happens with apple

#

Okay yeah wow rare

night girder
#

yeah, and also 10 years ago probably 🀣

winged valley
#

Anyways if you ever HAVE to take something to the genius bar, I would highly recommend you actually take it to a Micro Center first if there's one near you. They are apple certified (which means they are allowed to do everything the genius bar can do aka reserialize stuff) and it will generally be cheaper and faster

night girder
#

not sure if I am buying another macbook after this one. There is 0 flexibility anymore with their hardware and OS.

charred pewter
#

its the 2021 M1 max... but i bought it recently (still under warranty)

winged valley
#

I would recommend against it. The ecosystem isn't worth the headache to justify buying mac

night girder
#

All my old macbooks, I was able to recover the drive (put the harddrive into case and was able to recover data) hehe That's no longer possible.

winged valley
charred pewter
#

this is the second time its done it... and im hoping they realized its problem and DID replace the board..... but did a very clean job at it, cause i cant tell

night girder
winged valley
#

If it breaks again my genuine advice (as someone who works in this industry) is:

Take the laptop to a nice repair shop near you that isn't apple certified and preferably one that does board level. They will be able to actually diagnose the exact problem and fix it if you wish to. @charred pewter

charred pewter
#

the letter in the box simply said "They fixed it, and installed a new OS"

winged valley
#

Unless you have applecare or you KNOW its in warranty, don't take it to apple certified. There are reports that came out recently saying some lady was charged by the genius bar just for checking her warranty.

charred pewter
#

the second time they sent it to mephis for repair... the first time they did it there at the apple store

#

yeah, im not going to allow them to do that, because i know when to bitch

winged valley
#

If they sent it to memphis then they probably sent it to one of their 3rd party reworking contractors which do really bad work

#

Also those places are supposedly only slightly better than sweatshops

charred pewter
#

its under warranty... they owe me a complete working non-lemon... free of charge. there are no exceptions, and it can easily be taken to court

#

that lady is simply an idiot for 'letting it happen'

winged valley
#

Yes I agree she's an idiot but the fact that Apple tried to pull that at all is not excusable

night girder
#

Just because you bought it doesn't mean you can fix it...

#

Even a good repair shop is no longer a garantuee since apple does everything in their power to mess with em.

winged valley
#

@night girder Screen replacement is still possible but you have to be skilled in reworking and know what you're doing

charred pewter
night girder
#

I watched the video fully.

winged valley
#

@charred pewter Are you a fan of apple by any chance?

charred pewter
#

nope

winged valley
#

Okay just wanted to make sure lol

charred pewter
#

i hate the direction theyve been going for years now

night girder
#

and technically you are correct. But also wrong.

charred pewter
#

their macos is shit, and more shit, and even more shit πŸ˜„

winged valley
#

I have an infernal distate for apple because of the shit they keep pulling

night girder
#

Yes, you can replace it. No, it's not made to be replaced. Like I said, Apple doesn't like 3rd parties. (software, hardware and repair) πŸ˜›

winged valley
#

Yeah its very anti repair

night girder
#

It's ridiculous at this point sadly 😦

charred pewter
#

yeah, apple wants to control every aspect... they even get pissy if you dont use one of 'their' chargers

night girder
#

Yeah, I feel more like a apple slave than a apple costumer πŸ˜…

winged valley
#

At the very least its still possible to do. Unfortunately its not practical to do unless you/your technician is already an expert on doing it. Even then its almost impractical costwise

#

Bc then you have to pay for that experience and knowledge and ugh

dusk rivet
#

apple isn’t quite enough of a pain in the ass to make me switch from them

night girder
charred pewter
#

i just know my rights under the warranty, and wouldnt let them get away with any of that shit

night girder
#

And the cool thing of the video is. It's two BRAND NEW macbooks.

winged valley
#

Yep

#

Serialized

charred pewter
#

im already on the fence of demanding compensation for time and money lost in travelling across town to their stupid store πŸ˜„

night girder
#

So they just swap around the screens of new macbooks, one would think it would work, but nop.

winged valley
#

I don't know the whole process by heart but what I do know is you have to transplant the LCD control chip from the LCD control board of the original screen onto the new one

night girder
#

Yeah, unless Apple is going to give back freedom to consumers, they lost me.

night girder
#

but to calibrate, you need a tool. Which only apple has hehe

winged valley
#

The transplant itself isn't super hard but getting to it (without breaking anything) is very hard (and then like you said calibrating the chip to the defects of the new display is a whole other beast)

#

I'm pretty sure RRG made a tool for it but I doubt they're releasing it

night girder
#

It's just sad tbh

winged valley
#

Apple tries to excuse serialization by saying oh its for security

#

Okay apple, riddle me this: What fucking security enhancement is being gained by serializing the SLEEP SENSOR in the hinges?

charred pewter
#

my wifi MAC address is exactly the same as it was before i sent it in ....

winged valley
#

Before that you could do mental gymnastics to justify their practices but like

charred pewter
#

so no hardware changed

winged valley
#

Now its just blatant

charred pewter
#

guess im going to be calling them up in a week when this bricks itself again

winged valley
charred pewter
#

im not going to pay some idiot at some rando PC repair place to tinker with it

winged valley
#

Just to look at it, not to fix it

charred pewter
#

if apple cant fix it... no one can

winged valley
#

Bro what?

jagged snow
#

Apple didn't try to fix it

charred pewter
#

haha you seem to give more credit to the 'technical people of the midwest' ...

night girder
#

it's not that apple can't fix it. They just wont.

#

It's a difference.

winged valley
#

Oh you're in the midwest nevermind

#

I live on east coast we have more tech people here

night girder
#

Send it to Louis Rossmann

charred pewter
#

yet, i get earfuls from other people about how apple will sometimes even just replace the whole thing with a newer model

#

so, you have to see where i sit... in the middle of two extremes... no one being right, because nothing is being done as they say happens

#

oop, hold on

winged valley
#

You can send it to Rossmann Repair Group in Texas, they takemailins. However you have to pay for shipping both ways and it could take a while. They're very popular (due to their quality) and have longish wait times

#

They're also specialized in apple products

#

Rossmann himself is actually how I first found out about that SSD issue

charred pewter
#

it cost apple already sending it down to mephis and back ... haha... if they didnt do anything, they just wasted their own time and money πŸ˜‰

dusk rivet
charred pewter
#

co-worker is down in austin ... almost a tech central down there

winged valley
#

Pretty sure that's where RRG is lol

charred pewter
#

his macbookpro did something "similar" ... but he at least got a growbar during startup before it died.... they fixed his on the first trip to memphis

#

i couldnt even get mine to boot into recovery mode 😦

winged valley
#

I would say RRG is probably your most surefire bet to get it actually repaired. However again, if its that SSD issue, then repairing it doesn't fix it because its a design defect from Apple because they use shit NANDs

#

So it would just happen again

night girder
#

Rossman is a tech repair God πŸ˜„

winged valley
#

You're better off with a different model if that's the case

#

He himself doesn't do much repair anymore but his employees are good

charred pewter
#

fun

night girder
#

not only does he do repair, he is also active in legal and politics to advocate for repairability for everyone.

#

He is actrually fighting a fight, for us consumers.

winged valley
#

Letter I like rossmann too but don't suck him off too much lol

night girder
#

Ok, name someone else who does it?

#

GN? Linus? Jay2Cents?

winged valley
#

My point is you're going a bit too overboard

#

Not that someone's better

night girder
#

He is the only one with dozen of videos showing off the flaws of apple products.

#

he is the only one I ever seen in legal battles, like in congres etc.

winged valley
#

Ranting and raving about how good someone is in a situation like this is more likely to annoy the person out of pursuing their services than it is to convince them

night girder
#

Frigidman is always annoyed with apple.

#

Can't get much worst, know him well πŸ˜›

#

Surprised he bought the thing in the first place 🀣

winged valley
#

Yes except he also mentioned disliking independent repair techs

night girder
#

Oh wait. No. My bad. Mixing Frigid with someone else πŸ˜„

#

Where is that cat person.

night girder
#

but that's a whole other can of worms.

winged valley
#

Unfortunate

#

Its funny my uncle is an apple fan but he's "open" to discussion about their shit behavior. Only whenever I corner him in a discussion about their shit repairability he just defaults to "oh well its about quality control they only want the highest quality for their customers"

#

Like his mind is completely closed but doesn't want to outright say it

charred pewter
#

all my mac friends are just closed ...

#

im gonna run this software update and let it reboot ... haha see if it bricks itself πŸ˜„

#

ive been so pissed off at apple lately ... their software management is just driving me nuts (what used to be a great OS, is now a pathetic play toy for morons)

#

and now their hardware... becoming more and more unrealiable

night girder
#

I have this feeling so much the last few years with Apple.

charred pewter
#

all my prior macs... never a single hardware issue ever ... they were like tanks

night girder
#

5 years ago I had more arguments to say why I bought an apple product.

charred pewter
#

hell, i can still boot up my Snow Leopard MBP... wonderful 17" screen... and its snappy, works, solid

night girder
#

now, I don't have any arguments anymore 🀣 The UX is slightly less annoying to me than windows.

charred pewter
#

i dunno, apple is fast approaching the 'lets make the UI a kiosk for kindergarteners' ...

night girder
#

and all my music is in a iTunes library. And it (was) a clean UX? Untill they messed up the system preferences πŸ˜’

charred pewter
#

i mean how much bigger can they make title bars ffs

night girder
#

I am mostly pissed of how they messed up system settings.

#

and for 2 years or more, they did 0 fixes and no improvements.

#

They just implemented a half baked feature and gave emself a pat on the back.

charred pewter
#

its different ... i never was a fan of the old way, as i always found i was fishing in a sea of icons trying to find what i was looking for

#

now its just a list of icons instead of a sea lol

night girder
#

now you fighting a list ...

#

🀣

#

and you cannot even resize the thing???

charred pewter
#

and whats up with all the new folder icons? what happened to the clean look in 10.15 ??

night girder
#

Why do I have to use a iphone UI on a laptop with a bigger screen?

charred pewter
#

you could never resize the original preferences panel πŸ˜„

hollow oak
#

Apple has built their systems to try to get as much money as possible. They work pretty great with each other until they don't. It's starting to approach the "not even worth it" catagory.

night girder
#

in 10 years. Apple will have 1 OS for both phones and laptops.

charred pewter
#

least you CAN increase the 'height' of the system prefs list panel

night girder
#

and forget resizing windows and all the extras.

charred pewter
#

yeah

hollow oak
charred pewter
#

it will all just plop center screen on top of each other

jagged snow
charred pewter
#

force you into big screen mode with the most backward way of UX imaginable

night girder
night girder
jagged snow
#

I'd rather see my phone become essentially a streaming box for my desktop

charred pewter
#

ray tracing on an iphone game

#

🀦

night girder
#

Eh, I wouldn't mind if my phone was also my laptop πŸ˜„

jagged snow
charred pewter
#

if a computer became powerful enough to be the size of a phone, and you just plop it into a dock for a full sized monitor, keyboard, mouse ... i wouldnt be against it

jagged snow
jagged snow
charred pewter
#

people are so used to throwing stuff away and buying a new thing

night girder
#

Who knows? Maybe we get a new brand with a focus on consumers and repairability?

hollow oak
#

Let's just get an implant in our brain, why even need pc when you can be pc?

night girder
#

What is that laptop brand again. Modular or something?

jagged snow
#

Framework?

charred pewter
#

so other than a (better) System Preferences ... whats different in Ventura over Monteray? ... cause everything else i 'see' is just as crappy as monteray was

night girder
#

I don't have experience. But it's interesting to see how this develops*.

jagged snow
#

Yeah, I'm a big fan of the project

#

I've been on the hunt for a new laptop and considering one of those

#

They're just pretty pricey

night girder
#

The concept is really interesting. And if they can pull this off, it will open new doors for consumers.

#

hehe, I just found pictures of a laptop. But it's actually a shell where you put in your Pi 🀣

hollow oak
winged valley
#

A more open schomebook very interesting

#

Personally I think framework's idea is pretty cool

jagged snow
#

Speaking of, I tried ChromeOS Flex for a relative for the first time, pretty impressed actually.

#

They've been using it for a couple months now with no issues

winged valley
#

You're impressed with a glorified web browser?

winged valley
#

Neat

night girder
jagged snow
# winged valley Neat

Yeah. It seems much better at idle power management than windows, and handles 32bit a lot better

night girder
jagged snow
#

I'm completely with you on that. I'm working on transitioning away from google on a lot of platforms.

night girder
#

so if it wasn't from Google or didn't use Chrome, I would test it out.

jagged snow
#

However, for somebody that watches youtube and checks their email, I figured it was a better solution than linux.

hollow oak
jagged snow
#

Open source or die

hollow oak
night girder
hollow oak
night girder
jagged snow
#

There's not really any danger of malware and they can't mess up the system configuration too badly.

#

So pretty much linux was too powerful

hollow oak
winged valley
#

KDE Plasma, XFCE, Gnome. Those are the 3 desktop environments I know for linux but I also know that XFCE is terrible and looks awful

#

And Gnome is pretending to be mac

night girder
charred pewter
#

now i do have to say ... restoring my laptop back to what i had all on it and setup ... was surprisingly simple especially given it was going from 12 to 13 in the same process

jagged snow
#

That's very true

winged valley
#

@night girder NT (Windows) is also old and tested. Linux is "so much more secure" because its open and not a janky mess like NT is

night girder
#

So, aslong as you know what you are doing with Linux, you should be safe. But like any OS. An OS can't cure the stupidness of it's users 🀣

charred pewter
#

apparently the 'migration' tool works fine from a full superduper backup ssd

#

i mean, it even restored (migrated) my homebrew install of PHP

night girder
jagged snow
hollow oak
charred pewter
#

sudo su 1234 lloll

charred pewter
night girder
jagged snow
#

@night girder if you aren't a fan, look into ChromiumOS

#

It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like

hollow oak
winged valley
night girder
#

when I installed W11 I got stuff like LinkedIn, instagram etc all installed.

#

I don't have any of that shit.

jagged snow
hollow oak
night girder
#

Didn't have the time to clean it up. But that's a clean install of W11 menu.

winged valley
jagged snow
jagged snow
night girder
winged valley
#

O

#

Yeah still bad

night girder
#

I don't have an Xbox. Wtf is clipchamp?

jagged snow
night girder
#

but ... why? 🀣

winged valley
#

its actually decent weirdly

night girder
#

Ok, and that's fair.

jagged snow
night girder
#

But I am more a person of "opt-in" and not "opt-out". For ads. For programs. For mails. For anything.

hollow oak
night girder
#

I love "opt-in". I spend hours disabling settings in windows. Why not give people an option to disable everything at installation and let them opt-in?

#

and if you want, they can do an installation with default, like how it is now.

sharp oasis
#

Bc fuck you. That's prolly why.

night girder
#

Then both parties are happy. But that's way too much work for Microsoft. So yeah ...

sharp oasis
#

Yeah.

#

I've opted out for all telemetry and shit

jagged snow
#

@night girder they charge you a subscription to output any video above 2k even though it's all done locally

sharp oasis
#

Then I bought a Google pixel. xD

jagged snow
#

Along with some other features behind that paywall

hollow oak
sharp oasis
#

I just use davinci resolve

sharp oasis
jagged snow
#

They're way too cloud-dependant for my liking

hollow oak
sharp oasis
#

It's an older pixel dw

#

Pixel 6 pro

#

Bought referb to get off my Motorola

#

The one I bought is comparable to a iPhone 12 pro

#

For processing power

night girder
jagged snow
night girder
#

You do have a project to build a trimmed down W11 installer. But again, it's the community who has to put in the work.

jagged snow
#

Tiny11 is missing a lot

night girder
#

And the community is doing this "blind" a.k.a. without a lot of official documentation.

jagged snow
#

It's the absolute bare minimum nececary for the os to function

night girder
#

Yeah, I am not recommending it Fight. But I am just giving an example that it's possible AND that the community did it.

#

So that just proofs to me that Microsoft have no excuse to not offer us such a feature.

jagged snow
#

I've used tiny10 quite a bit

#

It's good in some specific scenarios

hollow oak
night girder
#

I didn't do it because I was afraid too much stuff would be broke.

sharp oasis
#

But I do think it's kinda funny @hollow oak I'm buying a phone that isint too far off my dads motorola thinkphone for around half the price

night girder
hollow oak
night girder
#

If Microsoft was piss poor, and said: "we need money" then I agree, it's a good excuse.

#

but that's not reality πŸ˜„

hollow oak
#

I did preface saying it wasn't a good excuse lol

night girder
hollow oak
sharp oasis
#

I find it funny that my little sister finds bing more useful at finding shit then Google

hollow oak
night girder
#

I even disable Microsoft printer services/features because I know they can be vulnerable 🀣

hollow oak
tough owl
#

πŸ‘€

night girder
#

Well google was great.

sharp oasis
hollow oak
hollow oak
sharp oasis
#

And well I put in wayyyy to much research on what I wanted to buy.

hollow oak
hollow oak
night girder
#

tl;dr -> "it allows attackers to remotely execute code with system-level privileges, which is as critical and problematic as you can get in Windows."

hollow oak
#

I will say, Microsoft is usually pretty good about fixing major vulnerabilities pretty fast. However, they usually accidently make some more while doing so.

night girder
#

Yeah, they do their best. It's just not that I expect a printing service to be hackable in the first place πŸ˜‰

hollow oak
#

anything is hackable if you try hard enough.

night girder
#

I don't think you can get system-level priviliges by hacking for example notepad or something. But I don't know that for sure.

hollow oak
#

don't know till you try I guess lol.

dusk rivet
charred pewter
#

let me introduce you to Jason

#

he hacks anything

charred pewter
#

@night girder wow, this new System Preferences is just so nice... all ordered in a list, easily scanable, can find things, a clear spot to type a search word with actual results that match stuff... this is just awesome

night girder
#

It's halloween, not April the 1st.

#

This is what irks me. The whole left space is LOST space, since the menu stays there.

#

Ah sorry for the weird image format. New paint, gotta get used to it hehe

#

While on the old preferences, you had a sea of space for information.

charred pewter
#

lol

night girder
#

I still don't think pushing phone/iPad UI onto a laptop is a good idea. The whole purpose of a computer is having a lot of read space . I can size windows etc to create ideal workflows.

#

But I do see if they have to maintain one System settings for both the phone and laptop (since the code is now the same) it reduces costs for them. That's the main reason.

tough owl
night girder
#

It's not for our benefit, I don't believe it.

charred pewter
#

I know how to trigger Letterdeif πŸ˜„

night girder
tough owl
#

I hate it

#

After how long of the original layout to change it with something worse

night girder
#

fully agree.

#

The thing that surprised me is, that people actually went along with it. I though the community would push back.

tough owl
#

I don’t use settings app much anyway so it’s not that bad but still annoying

charred pewter
#

thats the part that is confusing .... it was years the "pile of crap" that isnt been ... then they decided to just redo it all. BUT.... they didnt like put any thought behind the redo?!?! like why did they take any time at all then if they were not going to plan it out better

tough owl
#

Old habits die young

#

Or whatever it is

charred pewter
#

for me, i'd rather not do anything, than half ass something ... cause half assing is still a waste of time

night girder
#

If they did this feature with more smart, and more features. Like give us an option to sort the list alphabetic out of the box.

#

Gives us an option of wider window. Maybe give us a option to get old UI? You know me. I like giving options πŸ˜„

charred pewter
#

Apple: "TAKE AWAY THE OPTIONS!" ... πŸ”¨

#

Or even crazier: let users drag and drop settings into groups. So you can group the settings yourself the way you want.

#

If you think an option under "General" should be under "Display" it would be cool that we could drop and drag it or something. It would be innovating. It will probably be a bad feature that fails. But better than not trying anything fresh and new πŸ˜„

night girder
#

And then you have Linux 🀣

charred pewter
#

isnt linux the opposite of all that? too many features, too much code, too many developers, no money, no UX ?

night girder
#

you cannot generalize Linux. Every distro is different. Some distro's are out of the box. Some are hard etc.

charred pewter
#

i mean, if we are talking "piles of crap" ... linux takes the cake

dusk rivet
#

linux is really too diversified to make generalized statements

night girder
#

Again, you are correct. But not when it comes to Linux distrobutions itself.

charred pewter
#

granted im annoyed with ubunto

night girder
#

You cannot say that. There are distro's that are "hard" to set up (arch, which isn't true either) and some are really consumer friendly like "ubuntu" or so I heard.

#

Some will be opt-in, some are opt-out etc.

#

Some have an UI, some give you the option for an UI. Linux is very hard to pin down since it's such a wide variety.

#

The biggest difference is this imo: Linux gives power to the people (and also responsibility) and other OS have the habit to father/mother their consumers and protect them.

dusk rivet
#

is apple’s β€œunified memory” ram or vram

night girder
#

euh, google? πŸ˜›

dire igloo
#

Probably both

night girder
#

it's not vram it seems? (I think they just don't want to name it like that and are being Apple calling it something "special").

dusk rivet
#

oh it’s apple being weird

night girder
#

I am not familiar with the subject so I am doing a little bit of reading.

#

"The memory architecture brings together the memory resource available for both the CPU and GPU. This would traditional by split between RAM and vRAM respectively. "

#

"Instead, the CPU and GPU cores can access the same memory from the same resource avoiding the needs for data to be communicated between different memory locations. The result is improved performance and efficiency."

#

So it reads to me, that they don't have VRAM (not ram on GPU) but that the GPU and CPU can access the DRAM at the same time.

#

Can it be because VRAM technology might be patented? And they can't use it because of corpo wars?

idk, Logitech has always been weird as is imo

charred pewter

so protonmail is on our 'high risk' list

hollow oak
night girder
#

Don't be so quick to dismiss them. What I've read of it, they have legit reasons. If it's for privacy and security I understand you need a piece of code. And since they are independent and have to compete with stuff like Outlook and Gmail, I also understand they need money somehow.

#

They have a free tier. And they have a paid tier. And ofcourse the paid tier has more features.

#

Then again, I am testing it out, so can be that I find stuff that pisses me off. But so far so good. And I use it to receive spam on. So if I don't trust a website with my main mail adress, then I use the proton one.

jagged snow

night girder

Now a days, owning your own server isn't even really worth it. Most companies are switching over to cloud hosting. Which, I think has it's own pros and cons. Just less maintenance on your side.

night girder

I rather pay a provider to do it for me πŸ˜„

#

although, the technical part really intrigues me.

#

Just to implement it and learn how it all works πŸ€”

hollow oak
#

what? setting up a server? if you're using Windows Server it's pretty straight forward for the most part. It really depends on what you're trying to do with it. A mail server is super easy, just expensive especially for the network gear you should have in front of it.

off topic pc upgrade quesh:

i have a 9th gen Corei5 (9600kf) and i wanna make an upgrade to the LGA1700 socket
Should i get a 9th gen i9 instead? Or will getting any reasonable LGA1700 cpu will be better (similar or better than my current one)
I'm using this thing for blender and satisfactory mainly

twin dew
#

128 bit per M2 "chiplet" that Apple is then tiling several, with up to 8 of those as single CPU for the Ultra.

reef onyx
#

Ping me when replying so i notice

twin dew
#

Sorry, M2 is 128 bit, M2 Pro is 256 bit, M2 Max is 512 bit and M2 Ultra is two M2 Maxes for 1024 bit.
Single normal DDR5 channel is 2x32bit for 64 bit.
Normal LPDDR5 channel is 1x32bit IIRC.

#

So only difference from normal LPDDR5 in laptops now is the amount of channels in the higher end versions of the M2.

#

And that Apple has probably tuned the memory latencies more compared to just JEDEC spec.

#

The new Threadripper 7000 Pros will have similar memory bandwidth with the 8 channels of DDR5.
And current Epycs have 12 channels, but at lower frequency (normally).

#

Whops, The Ultra will have total of 16 channels?

Not 8, Max has 8 equivalent.

LGA1700 is dead tho

iirc the 14th Gen will be the last one on that socket

For comparing to 9th gen, need to go in steps or check some other reviews.

That upgrading on same MB depends if you CAN get used better 9th gen CPU for cheap from somewhere.

pure karma
#

im just gonna act like i havent had 0% battery for like 40 minutes now

#

voltage is quite low so its probably just confused

#

should be at around 13.1V

twin dew
#

You are on battery power?
Would seem that the protection circuits in the specific battery might not be working properly, and you might be causing major damage to the battery right now.

The cutoff for Li-ion isn't when it cannot give power, but before it starts to take long term damage from the discharge to too low level.

pure karma
#

could be cuz the operating range is normally live 12.5-13.15V ish

twin dew
#

Or just bad calibration and hasn't hit the low voltage threshold yet.

#

You are at that end knee where the voltage drops.

#

Probably three cells in series battery.

pure karma
#

cuz yea its not reading anything and battery life tests pass

twin dew
#

That battery percentage is just calculation.

#

Because as you see from that chart, the voltage cannot be used to determine the charge outside the almost full and almost empty.

#

The machine tries to keep track how much power has been used since last charge to full.

pure karma
#

i wonder if the values have just become inaccurate from age instead of only wear

#

cuz im prettysure this battery has only about 2000 hours on it

twin dew
#

That is what I meant with the calibration.
Many laptops have a calibration test that you run that fills the battery, empties it, and then charges again, to calibrate how much capacity it has left and how it reacts to discharging.

#

It does runtime calibration too, where that full charge capacity drop is from.

#

But that isn't as accurate.

pure karma
#

yea this one dosent only a battery life test

#

its also old and slow

#

turbos a whopping 2GHZ lol

twin dew
#

But point is: Any lithium-ion or subtype battery percentage is just questimate, not accurate value.

#

Based on runtime power usage tracking.

wanton orchid
#

the most reliable way to calculate it is having a very accurate guess at how much power you draw and so how much power you drawn too

#

and putting battery temperature and ambiant temperature in the mix

#

So that's :

  • instantaneous tension
  • tension
  • instantaneous draw
  • draw
  • past draw
  • temperature
  • battery temperature
  • past temperature
  • past battery temperature
  • a compressed memory of all these from the past battery cycles / pattern
that you need to do accurate guess
#

then you know the battery health
then you know it's current state accurately

#

the most healthy way to deal with battery would require inputs from the user planned use cases
that's why some phone use user use cases and calendar to manage battery life

pure karma
#

just plugged it in and the service light disapeared instantly so its even more likely to be that

twin dew
#

So you are for some reason intentionally killing the battery?

Instead of just plugging the thing to AC power?

Amazon bought from the same sabrent seller ... :/

twin dew

jagged snow

Found out the SSD I bought had the same and I do notice the swapped controller struggles more with random r/w

charred pewter
#

if its another crap unit i'm just gonna 'return' for refund

twin dew
#

But with Amazon you can have knockoffs and real ones in same bin, and it doesn't matter who you buy from.

#

If there is legit seller, and knockoff seller, you get randomly from the stuff that both supplied to Amazon.

charred pewter
#

but i mean EVERYTHING else is exactly the same ... the boxes, the inserts, the baggies, the usb cable ...

twin dew
#

If the knockoff seller marks the stuff he sells same as the legit one.

charred pewter
#

even the plastic 'case' is the same... same printed sabrent logo

twin dew
#

But in this case it seems the real thing was downgrade.

charred pewter

Yes, X2HR:s.
Inside the lower adjustable part of the headband is just some elastic.
And like all such rubber thingies it will die with time and lose the elasticity.

Anything elastic will.
Including any type of rubber.
It is rubber in that elastic fabric band too.

But the bigger issue is that Philips stopped making and selling replacement ear pad cushions at same time they stopped making the headphone model.

gilded helm
#

Ugh. One of the venues I'm DJing stubbornly keeps the speakers set at 20%. Because if they're set much higher than that, they emit an unpleasant hum. But now it's impossible to plug in and play without peaking because of how much you need to turn up the gain. And I'm having no luck explaining to them peaking is bad, because it's basically just as loud as before they tried setting the speakers 40%.

jagged snow
#

So they're running into 60-cycle hum on the speakers... are they powered or externally amped?

gilded helm
#

Powered

jagged snow
#

I've pretty much exclusively run into that with cheap amps

#

Let me guess, they're some qsc look-alike

#

The older k12s and many other similar models had issues with 60-cycle hum

gilded helm
#

I'll try and get a look the next time I'm there. They're mounted 10 ft up so I've never been able to really look closely at the wiring or speakers themselves.

#

I played there last night and it sounded terrible. At least one of the amber lights on the mixer was on pretty much the entire time, hitting red at least once every second.

jagged snow
#

It's also possible that the wiring is not set up for audio specifically and you're getting some crosstalk causing the hum

jagged snow
gilded helm
#

Because the hum isn't noticeable when music is playing, I'm hoping I can just turn everything up, then turn it back down.

#

The house equipment I mean. Otherwise I might just shut up and wait until customers complain.

#

At this particular location, the venue owner always wants it louder than customers want it. So everything related to volume is pretty much a constant struggle.

#

Always some bullshit about wanting it to feel clubby

night girder
gilded helm
#

I sort of get how the venue owner isn't interested in going down the path of learning about audio technology. But the volume thing is confusing to me, because I've gone to quite some lengths to get feedback from customers, without trying to steer them toward one particular answer.

night girder
#

Yeah, it's confusing me too. Sounds like a person who wants hot snow.

gilded helm
#

If I felt like the customers wanted more volume I would give it to them. And at other venues I do.

night girder
#

I mean, if I was you. I would just let the owner handle his own shit.

gilded helm
#

I'm at that point. I really should just shut up and stick to my job

night girder
#

If he doesn't want to listen to you ... not much you can do? And if costumers complain about you the DJ, then just tell em the truth πŸ˜›

#

Do all speakers hum? Or only a particular one? A few?

gilded helm
#

I've never walked the room to analyze it.

#

I think the promotions director there did mention he thought it was the wiring

night girder
#

The issue is faulty hardware. So you shouldn't do any shenenigans. They need to fix faulty hardware 🀣

#

If it's the wiring, maybe it's not that expensive to let somebody look into it.

#

Or maybe it is. Anyway. Still sucks for you. If you are proud on the work you do, you want it to be as perfect as possible.

gilded helm
#

Unfortunately the promotions director there runs into the same sort of issues, where he ends up just being tempted to turn into a yes man instead of really trying to fix things.

night girder
#

Can't you just blow up the speakers? 🀣

gilded helm
#

The Zumba people will probably do that just fine without my help πŸ€ͺ

dire igloo
#

maybe you can assist them

gilded helm
#

One amusing thing I ran into by the way. One of the customers who's also my friend, started toggling the PFL/AFL on the mixer. Which does get the lights to go away for peaking, and they legit asked if that worked

night girder
#

never heard of PFL and AFL, just googled it. When do you use that?

gilded helm
#

I don't, I think that's something that's there for an engineer doing live music perhaps?

night girder
#

Oh, I found an example.

#

You can use PFL to plug in a instrument before bringing it into the mix

#

and I assume AFL is after the mix

gilded helm
#

Does Youtube really think date/time of a post are so irrelevant as to bury them? I'm looking at a short right now, and after a minute I cannot find the date/time it was put up.

night girder
#

I don't do shorts so no sure. I can see the date on normal videos.

#

yeah, I don't like how YT does short tbh.

Huh. It turns out the short I noticed (the only one in a channel) was made in August 2022.
