weird

it's gradually climbing back up

it's at 6GB rn

you should be too

#

When was the last time you drank or smoked

jagged snow
#

I did not understand that sentence

#

Yeah clonezilla should be able to do that

#

Oh really? That's weird

#

You can use the system restore feature to backup to usb

dusk rivet
#

my ram usage is gradually going up

#

so weird

jagged snow
#

Yeah I'd use clonezilla for that

dusk rivet
#

you doing alright maxeek?

jagged snow
#

You sure?

If I haven't said this before... I hate usb-c

pos standard. pos connector.

jagged snow

That's funny... I think that all things considered it's good that we ended up with it

standards that don't match.. and if or when the port breaks, throw your device away. This is the first and last one I do for under $100usd

#

Micro. When they broke they were easy to find. and you didn't need a reflow station to replace them.

#

They say it's supposed to be better or more durable.. but why do the fingers in the connector peel back like a shitty hdmi port?

#

if having lots of charging cables was an issue for phones, they should've required wireless charging lol

ohfinwell. it keeps devices out of the trash

Actually stable or just bootable?

stable @jagged snow

Might be the OC, might be just that the tightening of the mounting was made in uneven fashion and the cooler is little crooked when contacting the die.

#

And under normal gaming load the Hotspot doesn't get that hot. This was during timespy

twin dew
#

Did you screw each one down individually to completely down, or one turn per screw alternating?

edgy hazel
#

... Alternating

twin dew
#

Ok, just checking.

#

Then can just be again the die heat transfer limit with that OC.

edgy hazel
#

It's probably that. But I will check later today if I might have not tightened a screw properly and also give it a little wiggle

#

It's too early for your riddles Maxeek

edgy hazel

I'd get banned

twin dew
#

Getting finally to the meat of things again.
And after the primaries are tightened I need to see if loosening the TrrdS will bring gains, as tightening it caused loss.

#

Intel Memory Latency Checker results not shown.

#

I should just configure Windows to always boot to Safe Mode right now to get more consistent numbers...

#

But cannot be bothered anymore, because I would need to redo all the previous numbers.

#

The first and last Aida bandwidths are hitting the Infinity Fabric speed limit for single CCD.

#

Need to do that Safe Mode testing once I have the good settings confirmed and going back to see if loosening something helps.

#

Started with horrible 42-42-42-60-100 main latencies.
Last time got to down to 30-38-38-50-88, but didn't fully complete the testing.

#

Raphael IMC can read and write 32B/FCLK cycle to IF, but each CCD can only do 32B read and 16B write per cycle.
So single CCD Raphael is RAM write speed limited by the CCD to IMC IF link.

But CL 30 reached...
CL32 got full memtest pass while I ate.
If this passes quick Windows side tests then time to move to other primaries.

twin dew
#

Ok, CL 28 trained in normal time, time to run pass of Memtest86 on it.

#

Yeah, got single error already, so no-go it seems.

#

Still no-go I mean.

its been like forever since ive encountered a virus on PC ... so, is 'just downloading a zip' that is infected enough to infect the pc, or does it need to be 'run'

twin dew
#

Usually no.

charred pewter
#

like can i download a zip, and then run checkers on it... without being at risk "just because i downloaded it" ... i know seems prolly a stupid question

#

but its literally been decades since ive encountered one lol

Unless there is some very weird new 0-day they can use.

i wonder if MalwareBytes on a mac, can detect pc virus's in/on zips

Not sure

Also, Anti-Malware is quite unnecessary for almost everyone nowadays

twin dew

tRCD 34 was step too far, as expected.
Expected that for even the 36.

cinder moon
#

I would mind more about pushing my GPU in testing today's update, but it's been a cold weekend and having a 500w heater at my feet has been quite nice.

night girder
#

So AMD reverted the driver. But the confusing part is, why didn’t the driver execute? I had 23.10 and no internet. How did my pc/windows know to not execute it without internet connection. A mystery.

twin dew
#

Probably something unrelated.

night girder
#

Doubt it.

#

It worked fine 3 days ago. (The file on USB stick)

#

Now it executed but got stuck at 100% and then did nothing.

#

22.9 on stick without internet worked like a charm.

night girder
#

Still weird.

#

Also when my PC booted up. I got this. So WU dowloads what feels like bloatware.

#

It dowloaded some steelseries shit without my permission. Wtf Microsoft?

twin dew
#

Yes, autoinstalled the "drivers" for your hardware.

night girder
#

No no.

#

There were 2 “drivers”. One is a driver. One is an exe to install bloat.

twin dew
#

"driver", not driver.

night girder
#

No no.

#

One really is a driver I believe 😄

twin dew
#

It was in the "critical driver updates" category inside WU, even when it is bloatware.

night girder
#

But the second is bloatware diguised as driver and shipped with WU

#

This should be illegal.

twin dew
#

If it was just in "Driver updates", it wouldn't have autoinstalled AFAIK.

night girder
#

Image every company using drivers to ship bloatware to your OS. Have fun.

twin dew
#

Yes, the system is fucked in what is allowed to be included in that.

night girder
#

Every morning will be russian roulette. You dont know what your Os will boot up with.

#

Oh here we see you put in a USB stick from samsung. Here some “samsung drivers”

#

But this pissed me off so badly. That I went windows pro.

#

And have group policy working.

#

And now I can disable most drivers.

#

Also tell windows to not just download updates. And not to restart either. And a bunch of other cram.

#

Power to the user ✊

#

Maxeek, I spent days/weeks writing scripts. Editing registry. Micosoft put a lot of effort to make sure home users have 0 control over updates. Pay up for Pro they say.

#

Don’t treat me like a kid MS.

twin dew
#

You can still partially set it to that with Group Policy.
That it won't autoinstall.
But with Win10 and Win11, pressing "Check Updates" manually also means "Install anything found straight away" which is very annoying.

night girder
#

You wouldn’t believe how frustrated I al at the moment.

night girder
cinder moon
#

I put my mother on Linux Mint. It's worked out great so far. :3

night girder
#

In macOS we can pick our updates to dowload and install. More control.

#

Not sure why windows had this all or nothing approach.

cinder moon
#

My mother's laptop is running Linux Mint with auto-updates enabled, and btrfs root with snapshots. So if an update does break something, 5 minutes and I'll have it all good again.

twin dew
cinder moon
#

It's more that most people don't want to understand how computers work. Apple, Google and MS are happy to oblige and hide as much of the workings as possible, even when it provides a worse experience to anyone who does want to understand.

night girder
#

Now I am also disabling auto restart after update b

cinder moon
#

It makes sense. People use smartphones without any tech knowledge. And funny enough people brought up on phones now can't do basic PC tasks..

twin dew
#

They used to work much better.

night girder
#

Its just lacking options.

twin dew
#

But MS has taken stance that to control the WU updates, you need to deploy local update server.

twin dew
#

They partially work, but not like they used to.

cinder moon
twin dew
night girder
#

Its in their documentation.

twin dew
#

And those entries haven't been updated how the settings actually work with Win10.
And just tell how it used to work.

night girder
cinder moon
#

My neighbour at least had a legitimate problem.
They had two apps for SMS, one provided by Google and one by Samsung.
One was configured for SMS-only, the other to prefer RCS.
Somehow both were registered for different protocols, but only one was default.

So it only allowed them to send/receive SMS messages to devices that didn't support RCS. Anything that could send/receive RCS instead just failed to communicate.

night girder
#

They seems to work on my W11

twin dew
#

Yes, and like I said, they only work partially, and not fully like they used to before Win10.

night girder
#

But not sure yet. Just testing it out.

cinder moon
night girder
#

Microsoft tells in documentation which on works for which W version.

cinder moon
twin dew
#

That specific one in Windows 10 is marked as:

Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 or At least Windows 2000 Service Pack 3
Option 7 only supported on servers of at least Windows Server 2016 edition

night girder
#

Have you tried a clean install hehe

#

I mean, if you do gpedit and regedit chances are high you broke your os

twin dew
#

I mean that the Win10 intentionally broke the "ask for install" part for most of that stuff.

#

Compared to Pre Win10.

#

So that specific entrys settings are much less useful and user friendly than before

night girder
#

My experience: regedit is a mess. Half of the shit doesn’t work on home. You have no way to know which keys work on home from pro. People claim they can copy paste a pro reigstry to home and it all works. But after weeks I haven’t seen any result on home with regedit pro/gpedit values

#

So community: you can get pro features on home with regedit. My experience: no.

twin dew
#

Might have worked in older edition but not anymore

night girder
#

I googled for this year. And found all sorts of wild claims.

#

Anyway, regedit is not a rabbit hole I will jump in quickly.

#

gpedit seems way nicer.

charred pewter
#

the most annoying part of apple 'dumbing things down' for users, is they simply rip it all out and dont even leave hidden power-user configs and stuff available to continue using

#

i like both... i use my macs for 'work' and personal file management ... but i use my pcs for 'fun shit'

dusk rivet
#

they should just have a “not a lifetime apple user” mode where stuff isn’t dumbed down and they don’t remove stuff

night girder
#

I just want to play games 😭 But everyday something happens on this W11 crap that makes me clean install.

twin dew
#

Why?

night girder
#

Because I just want a clean OS that dont install steelseries and shit?

twin dew
night girder
#

How do I uninstall something, when it installed without my consent?

twin dew
#

Through the normal menu for that?

dusk rivet
#

you right click it, and click delete

twin dew
#

It gets added there.

night girder
#

What did it add to registry? What are all the directories?

twin dew
#

The control you seem to want over your OS just isn't possible with todays Windows.

#

And not really needed either.

night girder
#

Haha 😂 I like your optimism Baldur. Haha the uninstall menu. Yeah… that leaves behind 0 crap.

dusk rivet
#

i need windows to add a “remove all traces of this mfer from my computer” feature so i can remove mcafee and razer software from my computer properly

night girder
#

You know how much left junk I found on my old os?

#

No. I want control ffs.

dusk rivet
#

had some damned mcafee files keep me from deleting them even acting as an administrator

#

never did manage to delete them

night girder
#

I whish windows did it like Linux. Opt in instead of this opt out bullshit.

#

Steelseries probably left traces all over my system with a uninstall. The fact is. i am not at fault here.

#

Windows shouldnt just install bloatware as drivers.

dusk rivet
#

if it was a completely fresh install it shouldn’t be possible for steelseries to install itself

night girder
#

Or better yet. Ask users before installing? What a crazy idea.

night girder
#

WU installed steelseries as “driver” is the short of it.

twin dew
dusk rivet
#

needing software for peripherals is dumb

twin dew
#

If there has ever been security update need for that specific "driver" package.

dusk rivet
#

that’s what firmware is for

night girder
#

I dont need it!

#

Windows just does whatever it wants. No contol.

twin dew
dusk rivet
#

my keyboard, mouse, and headphones all don’t need software, and that’s how i like it

twin dew
#

Same.

night girder
#

People pay for an OS that just does whatever the fuck it wants with 0 control.

dusk rivet
night girder
#

You cannot even just uninstall drivers from the window update menu.

#

Wtf is that?

twin dew
#

Because that is just a listing?
And they go into the normal side of uninstalls.

dusk rivet
#

i had to remove razer software entirely from my old pc cause it triggered the cheating mechanism in an online test my dad had to take

#

microsoft teams also triggered it

twin dew
#

Normal listing, the old listing, or the "View installed updates" extra button in the old listing for Win10.
No idea about Win11.

night girder
#

I wouldn’t be so frustrated if I could uninstall the steelseries bloat with 2 clicks. I wouldn’t be frustrated if windows asked me to download drivers for steelseries. But MS choose for an UX they know people would piss off. And don’t want that? Pay for pro.

twin dew
#

It is in a way meant to update driver software versions that have major software vulnerabilities automatically.
But there is hole where it does that even if there isn't previous version installed that would need the fix.

night girder
#

Sorry, normally I try to look at things from multiple angles. But no matter how I look at it, I hate microsoft for this. I don’t see a “but…”. There is no but. This is unacceptable.

twin dew
#

For people who don't check themselves.

#

The problem is that second part.

night girder
twin dew
#

The SteelSeries software itself.

night girder
#

Give home edition gpedit. And problem solved.

twin dew
#

There has been some 0-day with the SteelSeries Software.

night girder
#

Power users know what to do. Normal users are protected.

twin dew
#

Privilige escalation attack in it.

night girder
#

Tell me why push it to my PC?

twin dew
#

Like I said, the functionality has reason.
And there is bug/feature/hole in it that doesn't consider if the security update is needed or not.

#

In that it doesn't check if older version is installed or not.

night girder
#

So MS is actually pushing software to our os with vulnerabilities.

night girder
#

You can 100% protect newbies. And 100% give power users control.

twin dew
night girder
#

It’s a balance. MS wants money. Thats al.

twin dew
#

Causing your issue.

dusk rivet
#

i have a gmmk keyboard that’s controlled just from function keys thank god

twin dew
#

It is good for most users.
But there is that bug that causes it to be problem in specific cases, like yours.

dusk rivet
#

mouse and headphones both have no rgb

night girder
#

Hope you like it.

dusk rivet
#

i have a 100% keyboard i got with my pc as a backup

night girder
#

And have fun cleaning up.

dusk rivet
#

also uses function keys to control rgb

night girder
#

And remember: it’s all for your security. So when you spend hours cleaning up the system. Send love to MS for protecting you.

twin dew
#

And when I have said that the bug isn't bad?
Just trying to say WHY the functionality is there.
And what kind of mistake MS coders have made, causing your issue.

night girder
#

Nah, I hate it that people defend MS

dusk rivet
#

don’t have enough experience with other OS’s to have an opinion

night girder
#

For really sketchy and bad UX. Call a cow a cow.

twin dew
#

Either protect most of the population and cause issues for few power users.
Or satisfy the power users and leave lot of people with unsafe software.
They should satisfy both, but they don't currently.

dusk rivet
#

haven’t had many issues with win11 other than them keeping me from fully deleting mcafee

night girder
twin dew
#

And like I said multiple times, with Win10 and after they broke the control functionality partially.

#

Even with Pro or Enterprise.

#

If you don't set up local update server.

night girder
cinder moon
#

My sister and brother-in-law are both big Apple users.
They are also exactly the kind of consumption-happy people you'd expect, jump on fads and use techology because it exists rather than because it's actually useful..

night girder
#

No more steelseries installed.

cinder moon
#

They also have constant issues with WiFi at most places they go, and continue to blame everyone but the manufacturer of the devices struggling to connect. 😛

night girder
#

Without a local update server.

#

Yeah thats fine. If you dont pay 150 for an OS

twin dew
#

Ok, so the block drivers counts for even the "critical" ones at this time.

dusk rivet
#

whos paying 150usd for windows

#

idrc that much about data collection

#

i ain’t that interesting of a person

#

you can get legitimate licenses for less

cinder moon
#

I stopped using Windows. That's about as far as I could go.
As for stuff online, I configured my browser to only store cookies for whitelisted sites. It's only a partial solution, and I have to hope the data protection laws help me on the rest.

night girder
#

Maxeek. Thats why I am so pissed. Because aslong as people are like “this is fine” , microsoft will keep dumbing down OS and removing settings. Consumers need to start pushing back in my opinion. But I know I am a lone wolf in this one.

twin dew
#

And even Linux and package managers don't save you from the "shit left over from uninstalled things" problem.
Because not all packages include the necessary data about what extra files they create during use.

cinder moon
#

(Also I just outright lied about my personal details on my Google account. Illegal and yet feels safer.)

dusk rivet
#

can i move my m.2 with the os on it from one pc to another and not have to deal with licenses

cinder moon
#

Using a Microsoft account today? Probably.

night girder
#

Windows doesn’t even try…

dusk rivet
#

perfect

#

that thing is getting moved right on over

night girder
#

I love brew package manager for example

cinder moon
#

At least it's 2023 and everyone's on an SSD, so those extra files don't impact disk performance any longer.

dusk rivet
#

i’ll prolly jankily plug in my current hard drive to the motherboard so i can transfer files to the new m.2

#

i have a memtest86 thumb drive i can use to test the ram too

twin dew
#

Still available if you mean the hotswap things?

dusk rivet
#

i’ll prolly upgrade to 64gb ddr5 6400mhz

cinder moon
#

If you don't already, consider Ventoy.

#

Why have a USB for memtest and a USB for OS when you can have both on one? Make it a compact SSD while you're at it. 😛

twin dew
#

I just got HW solution, 2.5" SATA drive caddy that has Optical, floppy, USB stick etc. emulators.

#

Just put the image files to specific directory and select what you want to show out.

cinder moon
#

I ended up reverting my RAM back to stock 4800MT/s.
Two failed boots due to power issues fried my board's settings and I had to use the CMOS jumper pins to reset it..

twin dew
#

Still exist. Just harder to find.

night girder
#

Baldur. What group policy didnt work for you?

twin dew
#

Compared to before Win10.

night girder
#

I wonder if I will get message for W11 updates.

dusk rivet
#

you killed your keyboard?

#

i’d cry if my keyboard died

#

it’d be 134usd and 2 hours of work to replace it

#

i threw some tape on the back of my keyboard pcb and it actually helped

#

feels better when typing

#

i custom built mine

#

custom built keyboards ftw

#

more expensive but you get exactly what you want

#

macro keypad off to the side

night girder
dusk rivet
#

just learn how to solder and you can throw in your nice switches too

night girder
#

Soldering doesnt seem hard

dusk rivet
#

don’t think hotswappable macro keypads are much of a thing rn

#

my dream keyboard would be like 250usd

#

65%

night girder
#

I could use wireless keychron one a bit bigger

#

My current one is a bit hatd to move arrows.

dusk rivet
#

browns hurt my soul

#

they just sound and feel so bad

#

silent, thocky, clicky, whatever browns counts as

#

ranked in order

#

opticals seem gimmicky to me

#

no way people can actually tell the difference in responsiveness

#

i want a stream deck, but jesus are they expensive

#

so i’ll prolly go with a little macro keypad

#

don’t have a job rn so….

#

not at the age i need one

#

still a minor

#

stream deck, not steam deck

#

goodluck ever trying to find a stream deck by searching stream deck

#

like 180usd iirc

#

#

i dont even want it for streaming

#

jagged snow
dusk rivet
#

well i looked specifically on amazon

cinder moon
#

Ah, so Amazon's search is bad. 😛

dusk rivet
cinder moon
#

I'm likely going to cancel prime after Christmas.

dusk rivet
#

it’s convenient

#

i get overnight or next day most of the time

cinder moon
#

Next year they're putting ads on their prime video.

jagged snow
dusk rivet
#

on amazon, nah, on tik tok, to an unholy degree

cinder moon
#

I don't know if my ad block will block them, don't really care.
I'm avoiding amazon as a market place these days, it's turned to crap.

#

A billion Chinese knock-offs and nothing quality to be seen.

#

I am having a better time finding decent stuff on ebay at this point. x3

dusk rivet
#

amazon is too convenient

cinder moon
#

Convenient crap is still crap.

#

I mostly use it for <£10 purchases at this point. Anything substantial I can get a better deal elsewhere, and I don't need next-day delivery.

#

I'd rather spend 20% more elsewhere and have something that lasts twice as long.

#

I'm gutted that we lost Wilko. I was going in there several times a week.

dusk rivet
#

i don’t mind spending the time to comb through the chinese crap

#

i mean i do mind

#

but not really a great alternative

cinder moon
#

The problem is the Chinese knock-offs will put the good brands out of business, and then all you have left is the crap.

#

And so instead of Amazon, I bought myself a beanie from Carhartt.
It cost me £3.50 in delivery and I still prefer this to Amazon. 😛

#

Seriously..

#

I'm quite limited in what I can spend, but I'm still not going to buy crap. I'll save for longer and buy something decent.

Speaking of which.. heat pump tumble dryers.

#

A little more costly but the clothing comes out so soft! Great for towels.

#

First off.. England. I can put clothing on the line to dry and in this weather it'll take days to finish drying properly.
And then the clothing can end up creased.

#

If you're in a hot climate, not an issue. In England? You want a dryer.
Michigan? Dryer.

#

Heat pump dryers use about 1/3rd the energy. They don't use the heat pump just for heating (though they do partially), but more to create very dry air and draw the moister out.
A combination of warm-and-dry and it does a wonderful job.

#

I tend to do a combination of air dry then 30 minutes in a dryer to finish off.

#

Anyways.. people use dryers because they dry fast. And sometimes fast is better than cheap.

jagged snow
#

Also, fossil fuel dryers are cheap and fast

cinder moon
#

Cheap? Have you seen the price of gas over here?

jagged snow
cinder moon
#

I..can't give you a comparison in those units.

jagged snow
#

What is your gas charged by?

cinder moon
#

Our gas is piped in and it's charged by the kWh.

jagged snow
#

They're relatively uncommon

jagged snow
cinder moon
#

Or sometimes a Therm of gas.

#

If I find one of my bills, I can get the exchange factors..

jagged snow
#

If you go with propane it's a lot more expensive to have it trucked in

#

My power is all government-subsidized hydro

#

So it's cheap

cinder moon
#

Gas is a very standard thing to be piped here in the UK.
Only recent homes in the last 5-10 years will forego it, or very rural areas. Since we all have gas heating.

jagged snow
#

Gas heating is common here as well, especially in my area a lot of houses have it

dusk rivet
#

gas heating is common where i’m at, but it’s mostly via tank

#

we’re too far in the middle of nowhere

jagged snow
#

Propane is convenient

dusk rivet
#

no city sewage or water either

jagged snow
dusk rivet
#

~18k people live in my town

jagged snow
#

And there's no water/sewer??

dusk rivet
#

yep

jagged snow
#

We're barely at 2k and we have water, sewer, and gas

dusk rivet
#

mostly septic tanks and wells

jagged snow
#

Our entire county is a fair bit smaller than 18k lol

dusk rivet
#

next town over who does have city sewage and water has a pop of 36k

Our town of 2k has had city water for almost 80 years

maiden coyote
#

for a small neighborhood.. or those diguesting suburbs we love in the states, it's fine underground. you woudn't want to bury a hundred miles of 220kV transmission lines tho

cinder moon
#

So here in the UK, they're turning off the copper phone network apparently by the end of 2025.
And all major ISPs support VoIP, but only on full-fibre lines.

So I'm just wondering.. given how it's taken them over a decade to reach not even half the country, how are they going to finish the entire rollout in the next ~26 months? 🤔

jagged snow
maiden coyote
#

transmission lines rarely have issues. although we had a hurricane awhile back that actually destroyed them.

#

transmission towers broken in half or laid down completely.

#

most of our ISP's support some kind of voip on cable here. I think there's still alot of DSL internet though.. maybe that's what they're reffering to.. no more analog copper lines.

cinder moon
#

The UK is mostly ADSL if not on fibre.

maiden coyote
#

dsl will get you up to like 30 - 50 mbps now.

cinder moon
#

ADSL and speed of 19 up, 75 down.

#

(Realistically at least. It's sold as 80/20 or 76/18)

#

It's fibre to the cabinet and then ADSL to the home.

maiden coyote
#

the first time we got dsl I was so happy to have 128kbit

cinder moon
#

But anyway.. unless you're on a full fibre connection over here, you don't get VoIP. And so.. what're they gonna do at the end of 2025 when probably still 40% of the country is on analogue phones?

#

It's a pretty mad oversight right now.

maiden coyote
#

If they're just shutting it down.. then they figure you already have a cell phone.

cinder moon
#

Legally they can't do that for a bunch of reasons. Some people are still outside service range, some people rely on the phone system for medical devices.

maiden coyote
#

if you don't and you're a business.. then you'll have to use a third party service like magicjack

cinder moon
#

And also the contracts people have which include phone line access.

Epic launcher kills my internet if I don't limit upload speed (I have 43 mbit/s download and 7 mbit/s upload)

So I have to limit upload to 5 or 6 mbit/s

This happens only when I want to start a game and epic starts syncing

I haven't tested if this happens on other games though. So far I tested it on cyberpunk 2077

solemn iris
#

Hey so is this like computer tech talk only or also physics talk too?

#

Cuz I want to ask if an engine design i thought about would theoretically work

#

Basically, we get a small (but powerful) particle accelerator, we pump UF6 or vapour uranium into it (or just small pellets) accelerating particle to ~50% speed of light and at the end they would be hit by a wave of electrons, ensuring fission, and at small scales it’s a bit of an overkill, but we can pump trillions of Uranium atoms thru accelerator, creating a stable fission reaction

#

I know Radiation and Light from this basically atomic bomb would travel at speed of light, but if we use it in space, we wouldn’t need to worry that much about thermal radiation, since 1. There isn’t really a medium for these atoms to divisors heat 2. We’re moving too fast (if ship can achieve this theoretical 50% speed of light speed)

jagged snow
#

I don't know enough to say why that wouldn't work, except for the extreme demand for electricity

solemn iris
#

If this would be symmetrical, and we had enough battery power (Helium-3 reactors perhaps?) then reaching Mars would be a 40 minute trip, and Alpha Centauri- 9 year trip. Of course, the electric wave and the accelerator would need tremendous amount of power, but that’s a problem we will either fix in near future or we will all die due to CO2 emissions, making our air toxic, and dead people don’t care bout anything

#

This engine wouldn’t allow for fast inter-stellar travels, but it would allow for fast inter-planetary travel

tRP 36 had 3 errors during the night...
At least hopefully it was that and not the tRCD 36

#

Seems I need to run some more memtest passes with 30-36-38 next.

#

You don't consider waiting for computer to test RAM fun?

#

Fortunately I have two other computers to do fun stuff while I wait.

twin dew
#

So 30-36-38-60 worked for 5 memtest passes, time to continue to tRAS.

#

So next from tRAS of 60 to work it down to 48 if possible.

#

tRAS 50 was the previous limit.

twin dew
#

30-36-38-48 seems to be stable.
So then to tRC.

dire igloo
#

Let's see what the secondary and tertiary timings will turn out to be

twin dew
#

On the Buildzoid ones, did them to that first.
Will recheck once the primaries are done.

#

Trying tighter ones first, which probably won't work for most, one at a time.
And after that trying looser ones for each and seeing what the performance difference is.

#

In several different tests.

#

Because you can get better performance in some specific one with some latency looser if it causes the IMC to use more optimal interleaving.

#

But will then cause worse performance in another.

#

Got data:

#

Intel Memory Latency Checker results not included, but saved as per run .txts on the machine.

#

tREFI and tRFC:s are custom, from previous testing.

#

Which included heating the RAM modules with hot air gun until the reported RAM temperature (PMIC has the temperature sensor) was 80C or so.
And needed to pass the Memtest86 bit fade test.

twin dew
#

The tRAS 30 and tRC 68 are much lower than is actually used in the Buildzoid Hynix timings.

#

So as the tRAS 48 worked, I could just put the 30 in too and the actual result would be the same.

#

And now to test the minimal tRC of 86.

#

For the current settings. of 30-36-38 with tRTP 12.
36+12 = 48 which sets that limit, and then 38+48 = 86 which sets that limit.

#

Will see if going below has any effect at the end of the process.

cinder moon
#

XP as well.

edgy hazel
#

Just get rid of the desktop as a whole

#

Just the file explorer. Nothing else

twin dew
#

So just set to tRAS 30, tRC 68, which shouldn't have any difference from that set, and will set Memtest86 to run until tomorrow.

And without Gear Down Mode, on 1T, with dual-rank RAM.

dire igloo
#

I know a couple of people in the PCPP server that'd be quite interested in following this journey

twin dew
#

So the primaries are at minimum for current voltages with this RAM.
Need to do more testing on the secondaries and tertiaries.

#

Really hate that AM5 AGESA doesn't support ECC RAM error reporting yet, only does correction.
So currently testing with ECC disabled, so the two extra dies aren't tested.

#

So with ECC on, single bit errors are just corrected and swallowed, and dual errors lead to automatic UEFI initiated reboot.

#

And all the RAM ECC related AGESA settings beside the enable/disable toggle are missing.

#

But it was the same with early AM4 AGESA versions.

but like what’s wrong with your utilization

not a single core is even close to 100% utilization

maiden coyote

That'd be a good thing how?

maiden coyote

If I hit 100%.. I'll be sad, and my wallet will be sad too.

dusk rivet

i hit 100% regularly

dusk rivet

dusk rivet

it being a server makes more sense

maiden coyote

it does host my satis dedi tho.. so in that way it is gaming

dusk rivet

would be weird for a gaming rig

maiden coyote
#

satis dedi is pretty cheap on cpu, at least right now with a 5mb save and 200 hours although it is using like 60% of one thread

dusk rivet
#

what would be the best cpu for hosting gaming servers

#

assuming you have all the budget in the world

maiden coyote
#

a gaming cpu.. higher ipc vs server cpu's

dusk rivet
#

so like an i9-13900k?

#

or would amd be better

jagged snow
#

Amd because all cores are equal

#

e-cores don't do too well for that sort of workload

dusk rivet
#

so 7950x3d?

maiden coyote
#

I use passmark and use that number

dusk rivet
#

what kind of stuff is threadrippers good for?

#

don’t they have a stupid amount of cores?

maiden coyote
#

epyc and threadrippers are server/work stations cpus for highly multithreaded applications... ie not games

dusk rivet
#

ah

jagged snow
#

Threadripper not so much

#

It's a dead platform now, they haven't released one for two generations

maiden coyote
#

so according to that.. there's no difference between the amd 7950x3d vs intel i9 13900k although fight or flight makes a very valid point.. the amd cpu will host more servers

dusk rivet
#

when i upgrade my current pc i might turn my current pc into a server for hosting stuff

jagged snow
#

They took top-end gaming cores and crammed 32+ of them into one chip

dusk rivet
#

should be fairly easy

#

might not be the best server in the world, but who cares

maiden coyote

I mean, mine has an i7700 and it's working just fine. most of the cpu usage is a garbage tier NVR program that's eating 50% since I added 1 more camera -.-

at that point you might as well mine bitcoin. free* heat

twin dew

And the point of Threadripper is also the higher amount of RAM channels, for more bandwidth to feed the cores.

Hmm... Turbo isn't active in Safe Mode, so the CPU sits at constant 4200MHz.

But the whole point switching to safe mode was to get consistent results.

So that works fine.

Now to see in how many ways I can make the RAM training fail.

TrrdL 4 was step too far, gave memtest errors, but 6 seems to work.

twin dew
#

And how the hell am I running TrrdS 2?
Made through a memtest pass...

#

Ah, it was Activate to Activate Delay Time, different bank group, the different group being the important thing.

#

L was the same bank group.

#

So probably anything under 4 doesn't actually do anything?
Or some other timing is masking it still?

#

Yeah, seems Asus just allows to set values that don't actually mean anything?

edgy hazel
#

Not me avoiding powershells execution policy by just encoding it in base64 and running it via cmd hihi

twin dew
#

The weird thing is that ZenTimings does show the officially invalid timings values for tFAW, which is supposed to be min of 20 on AM5, and several other MB manufacturers UEFIs don't let you to set it lower, but Asus does allow and ZenTimings does show the set value.
But probably IMC just upping the value to minimum actual supported one?

#

UnPossible Timings of Baldur!

jagged snow
#

Cool!

twin dew
#

So the tRAS and tRC could also be anything below.
And I did test that last night.
But seems that the tRRDS cannot really be below 4 and tFAW is officially minimum of 20 (minimum time to do 4x tRRDS) on AM5.

#

4 and 16 was the tightest you could get for those on DDR4 in any RAM OC guide.

#

TwtrL 14 gets errors, so back to 16, and then to see if TwtrS can be lowered from 6.

#

Got into Memtest86.

#

And no immediate errors, time to try to have a nap.

dire igloo
#

Also, how about increasing frequency - and how's before/after benchmarks?

twin dew
twin dew
#

So on the real side got the tRP down 12 -> 10, which allowed to get tRAS and tRC down by two too.
Then tRRD_L 8 -> 6, tWTR_S 6 -> 4.
And then those impossible tRRD_S and tFAW.
tREFI could be raised to max at the normal operating temperature, but have been keeping it low to work at very high RAM temperatures if needed, will need to think and test that at the end.

#

Ok, seems there is some limit to how low some of those can go, doesn't train right now.

#

Booted with tRAS 1 and tRC 1.

#

Too bad ASRock doesn't specify the minimum timings in their BIOS guide...

#

OK, the AGESA side specifies them, in hex.

#

Time to get those into documentation and into decimal.

#

So 22 min for CL, 8 for RCD and RP, 30 for RAS, 32 for RC, 48 for WR, 5 for RTP, 4 for RRD_L and _S, 20 for FAW, 8 for WTR_L and 2 for WTR_S.

#

Rest had minimum of 1.

#

And so the TwtrS 2 didn't boot.

#

Ok, might boot, seems that the RAS and RC don't like to be that low?
Time to do some checking on them..

twin dew
#

tRAS 30, tRC 34 works, tRC 32 doesn't.

#

Even when anything below 84 shouldn't do anything in this case, and 32 should be the minimal value for the IMC settings registry.

#

And TwtrS 2 boots.

tough owl
twin dew
#

Mainly been keeping eye out that there aren't any significant drops compared to previous results.

#

Need to do the full tuning to tight as possible, then raise the IF, then do sanity checks where I loosen specific timings that seemed to have counterproductive results in the initial data.
And see if they still give better results while looser.

twin dew
#

Failures in Linpack... Need to see if it was TwtrS 4 or something else...

#

Possibly the tRAS and tRC?
Need to test more...

wanton orchid
#

Man I wish I could understand what all the tNAME was meaning
it's so hard to find detailed documentations on these
not everyone have friends that work at Hynix or MSI

wanton orchid
#

oh

twin dew
#

And Micron has public datasheets which show how the stuff relates to each other to some extent.

wanton orchid
wanton orchid
#

I'm going to try on my pc latter

wanton orchid
twin dew
#

Because I was using old. and just changed it to www., which used to work.

#

Hmm... tRC 34 was unstable somehow?
In Linpack and Memtest test 7...
And tRC 36 seems to work?
How can that be relevant at all?

cinder moon
#

When something in computers seems off, just assume fairy magic.

twin dew
#

tRC: Row Cycle Time. The minimum amount of time between activation commands to the same memory bank. Just like the name suggests, this is the amount of cycles that the IMC has to wait before it can send another activation signal to a bank of memory.
Overclocking guidelines? : By definition, the lowest this can go is tRAS + tRP. The reason is as follows: tRAS is the number of cycles from activation to precharging, and tRP is the number of cycles between precharging and the activation of another row. Thus, tRAS + tRP is the number of cycles between activating one row of memory and activating another. If you’ll think back one paragraph, that’s exactly what tRC is for.

#

Well, need to move back few steps then.
To last tested config before I dropped the tRAS and tRC below the "this should be the minimum" values...
And actually test those changes.

#

So might put in tRAS 30, tRC 36, tWTR_S 2 for the night with memtest...

#

And then do the performance tests one step at a time tomorrow.

twin dew

So would cost me 200e to replace?
Because that is my home insurance premium for accidental damage like this?

dusk rivet
#

ouch that hurts

jagged snow

Gosh could you imagine dropping all that money on a monitor and breaking it like that

dusk rivet
jagged snow
#

The guy who did buy it already ordered a replacement

dusk rivet
#

i wish i was rich enough to not care about the price of a monitor and just replace it

jagged snow
#

Same here

#

It took me three years to save up for the gpu & cpu I wanted

#

Oh well

#

Really isn't that important in the grand scheme of things

twin dew
jagged snow
#

Yup... those kind of policies can get pretty pricey though

#

And many of them are typically only avaliable to homeowners, not renters

twin dew
#

Not here?

jagged snow
#

They're pretty much banking on the hope that most people won't cash in on the policy

edgy hazel
dusk rivet
#

easier to talk to the company you bought it from instead of going through insurance

#

if you bought it fairly recently just say it was damaged in shipping

#

probably illegal but who cares

twin dew
#

Mine is 136,81e/year.

jagged snow
#

That's not bad at all

#

I'm assuming that's not bundled with homeowners insurance then

twin dew
#

Wide coverage home insurance.

jagged snow
#

Wow, that's a very good price on that policy

twin dew
#

For apartment and personal property.

jagged snow
#

Most us homeowners policies are an order of magnitude more expensive

#

Ahh, that's the difference

#

Rental, not homeowner

#

Makes a lot more sense

twin dew
#

Yes.

#

But also covers up to 500 000e any damage I cause to the apartment etc.

#

The actual building insurance is separate and paid by the "building", so part of the rent.

jagged snow
#

Yup, that's typical for US as well

twin dew
#

The actual insurance is up to 46820e of my stuff etc.
God only small amount one to keep the cost low.
With expanded coverage and lowered yearly downmarkings.
So for computer stuff, it is insured to full value for 2-3 years, depending on when you bought it and when you broke it.

#

Calendar year you bought it, one year in middle and the year you broke it don't devalue, any additional years do.
This was for computer stuff and electronics IIRC.
Different rates depending on category etc.

#

But for anyone who can afford 1500e+ monitor, I would expect them to have some kind of general home / personal property insurance.

#

But that insurance is required to rent basically.
Because most landlords want that liability insurance, for obvious reasons.
Paying little extra to have those better deprication schedules.

#

So Renters Insurance with combined personal property insurance and limited legal assistance insurance (up to 10ke of lawyers services, which goes pretty far over here).

#

But that liability insurance works for other things too IIRC.

#

Anyways, off to bed.

I still don't understand what's the difference between debit card and digital euro.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNJis8BEieo

Whether it's buying your morning coffee or paying the babysitter, you could pay with your digital euro wallet. The digital euro would be available for any electronic payments in shops, online or from person to person.

Like, if you paid with your debit card, you paid with "digital" euro

#

Only advantage I see is splitting your bills with friends

charred pewter
#

debit is money you have to have to spend, no credit

tough owl
#

I dont like this

charred pewter

so digital euro is ......

So digital euro is very similar to using a debit card, you can only spend what you have

charred pewter

so basically its someone else trying to step into something thats been cemented in society forever ...

#

kinda like venmo vs paypal ... like who the fuck cares

#

or that other one... pyypl ...

visual tree
#

Yeah, there are like dozens of digital payment systems, we don't need payment method number 101

charred pewter
#

and then on top of the standard credit cards, theres ways to use them ... google pay, amazon pay, apple pay, samsung pay ... geezus

visual tree
#

And by free payment, not sure if they meant businesses don't have to pay merchant fees like when a transaction is made with bank card

charred pewter
#

also... when i come across a webstore that supports 50 different ways to pay ... i immediately think of them as sketchy/skeevy/pron hosted

#

yeah not sure on the free payment bit .......

#

someone is gonna want their 'fee' for doing the service

#

we lose about 7% on every transaction due to all the payment processor/merchant fees involved by the time the money reaches our company bank account

visual tree
#

I had an argument with my sister since she uses apple pay. Basically, for me it is much more convenient to simply grab a wallet and pull out a debit card

Takes 3 seconds literally

Or more if you are an old person hehe
