There's a large untapped audience of potential game devs, I think. People who know how to code, but don't know and don't necessarily care to learn the visual and sound part of the process. Game assets are easier to produce via gen AI than actual game logic is because game logic needs to be cohesive across a usually large project consisting of many interconnected systems, current generation models are simply not very good at producing and maintaining software projects as a whole. Visual and sound assets, however, those only need to be produced as many times as it takes to get the desired result and then never again.

Game development has never been more accessible and the capacity to produce games has never been greater than this moment. The talent pool is extremely saturated as well with tons of unemployed game dev talent. Despite that, it feels like the proportion of AAA releases that feel worth the money has only shrunk over time. Can't really think of any explanation for that which isn't gross mismanagement of resources or gross incompetence (which is just another way of mismanaging resources).

Obviously I'm not making that observation in isolation, that would be unfair. It has to be made in contrast to the levels of success indie games are achieving with fewer resources, while acknowledging that the vast majority of indie games do actually flop. I think the important consideration here is the ratio of indie-to-AAA games among the top sellers for any given period.

Could be, that'd definitely be a management issue. Scope should largely be known at the beginning of the project IMO. Sure, you might discover some emergent gameplay opportunity during development that warrants expanding scope, but this definitely can't be happening all of the time. I feel like good project managers understand that scope should be well-defined and rigidly enforced.

It's basically the answer to the question "Who are we making this game for?"

But yeah, I can definitely see how scope creep might happen in AAA game dev because it often (in my experience, at least) originates from above the PM's paygrade. It's often some Director, VP or Exec making informal changes to the project's scope, bypassing all of the usual processes.

I usually go with the skill I want to play as soon as I can get it

even if it means not optimal set up

I'm kinda dumb like that

Rolling Magma for a lot of spellcasters. Wanders go with KB or Fusillade (usually the latter now). Strikers you just cry. Slams are basically whatever slam you want. Bows go with anything until they have LA and then they're just free.
