#Unusably laggy cards seemingly randomly

(Sorry, wrong tag. I thought AnkiDroid meant only the web version, instead of android. I'm on an iPhone.)

Seemingly randomly, my Anki cards (and buttons) on AnkiMobile and AnkiWeb lag so hard its almost impossible to use. It seems to maybe have some correlation to being connected to strong wifi, but I've just had this problem for the fourth or fifth time and I don't know whats going on.

I've tried holding the power button and restarting, it doesn't fix it. I usually notice after I leave the house, and it seems to fix itself whenever I recconect to my home network pretty consistently, but im at home right now and the bug is still occuring. This never happens on desktop Anki.

I would really appreciate if there was a solution to this

My first guess is that your cards are using images, videos or sounds that are being grabbed from another site. When you're on slow internet, they take longer to grab from the external site causing the appearance of lag.

If you open up one of your notes that you had the problem with, does it have a link to some other site in it?

Does this only happen on a single device (your phone) or do you also use Ankiweb on your desktop computer and experience problems there?

# eager gale * Have you looked at the HTML of the note fields, and the card templates to see ...

I don't think its the cards that are the problem, the lag is happening outside of studying cards. Even with a card with plain text is lagging, along with the rest of the app and/or website.

I have tried restarting my device, it doesn't fix the issue. Next time the issue occurs, I'll try turning on airplane mode but I don't think its going to help. I'll also try clearing the cache and cookies for the website.

Still having this issue, not sure if its the same one as before but I got a giant error text popup after opening a deck (which I didn't screenshot, is there a way to look at error logs on AnkiMobile?) and now the app is super laggy, and trying to undo gives me a "Error: UndoEmpty"

#

I somehow managed to fix it before, I think a specific card is causing the lag but i dont know what it is

#

doesn't cause any issues on the desktop version

# zenith lotus Yes, my usual notes do have 2 sound clips and also an image, but that isn't what...

That sounds like you have a memory leak in a script in a note or a card template.

I don't use ankiweb on my computer, but next time I have this issue I will check.
Did you ever check this? If it's happening on AnkiMobile and AnkiWeb on the same device, but not happening on Anki desktop -- the best way to figure out if it's the device, the OS, or the collection is to see if it happens on AnkiWeb on another device/OS.

but I got a giant error text popup after opening a deck (which I didn't screenshot, is there a way to look at error logs on AnkiMobile?)
There isn't a log, so do your best to reproduce that error and get a screenshot.

Didn't check ankiweb on my pc, will do if it happens again

did you also look at the cards with ctrl + L shift + X ? i noticed i could find a card in the search by looking for a character that wasn't in the fields and i was told to use this command and then i could see that there somehow was a whole random hidden script in it. (i dunno where i got that, but it's probably because i copy-pasted the word from some website that somehow also grabbed a script with it?)

to be clear the card in the screenshot only showed the text құлпынай before i used that command

it seems like i’m reviewing the same card twice and it’s causing problems

#

it’s not just anki that it’s lagging either, my whole OS audio is super delayed

wide ginkgo
# zenith lotus Got an error screenshot, and checked ankiweb on pc. No lag on ankiweb pc.

This appears to be a known issue that doesn't necessarily seem to be associated with slowdown.

(Perhaps in your case your OS's slowdown is resulting in multiple button presses occurring at the same time in a way that causes the error? You could try to increase your Double Tap Protection setting, which may avoid this error message popping up, but shouldn't do anything to improve the slowdown.)

Is your audio delay a consistent problem or just associated with these lag spikes?

In any case, at least one person's reported that changing audio over from a custom <audio><source src=file.mp3></audio> to Anki's normal[sound:file.mp3] improved audio lag on iOS.

#

Unfortunately, I think we're all shooting in the dark here, but it seems to me that the questions that need to be answered right now would be...

1. What do your templates look like?

Are you using custom code to play audio, or Anki's built-in methods? Paste the front & back here as text (you can wrap it in ``` [text here] ``` to make it easier to read.

You should also send a screenshot of at least one of your notes to show your fields and their contents, in case anything unusual is happening there.

2. Do you have, maybe, weird javascript code copied accidentally into your HTML fields for some of your cards?

3. Is this happening with a specific card or cards?

I think the best way to verify this would be, when the issue occurs, STOP studying. If you can't recall exactly what you just studied, sync back over to the desktop. On the desktop, use the Advanced Browser Addon to sort by Last Review and identify the cards you most recently studied before the issue occurred.

You can then inspect them for issues.

4. Is there any chance your iPhone is just like really really old?

# wide ginkgo Is your audio delay a consistent problem or just associated with these lag spike...

its consistent with the lag spikes. every few seconds all the sounds that should play play all at once, its fine for a second and then it cuts all audio until it plays them all at once again. this has happened every time i have had this bug and never anytime else. its lagging the app is lagging the OS. i fully turned the phone on and off with the power button and it didn’t fix it. i used anki web on a separate phone and it’s not causing lag.

i’m using an IPhone SE version 15.6.1

#

i’ll try the audio fix right now

nope i’m using [sound:133fc68b638f0b13df590f3a7bd1184c.mp3]

yep, but i’d be surprised if that was the issue

wide ginkgo
#

You'd be surprised if running 4 years out of date software was the issue?

AFAIK (not an iPhone guy) the internet browser and underlying web engine (which AnkiMobile uses) are bundled into iOS updates.

#

So, not only is your OS out of date and vulnerable to security issues, you're missing 4 years of improvements and bugfixes for the technology that AnkiMobile uses to render your cards.

tropic lake
#

so is the only option to buy a new phone regarding that? or are there seperate OS’s that are consistently maintained and not a apple garbagefest

can’t do it now but will update next chance i get

Good luck! 🤞

If the issue continues to occur after updating to the most recent version available for your phone, let us know the answers to (1) (2) and (3) here #1406412972238045316 message and the current iOS version on your phone and the model (whether it's the SE 1, 2, or 3).
