What's the source code for that (the <> button on the field)?
I think behind is the default for inline mathjax, while putting it under the lim is what it does for MathJax blocks. Cannot try right now.

Happens only in inline mode.
Suggestion: Use LaTeX.

Same issue. card editor and browser-editor show mathjax inline as mathjax block, looks right in reviewer and template editor. Anki 24.06.3
