I typically set it up with at least 4 or 5 rails, having areas where trains can switch between tracks to bypass other trains, and is fairly efficient.

If it's a train not on the direct route, but is still fairly busy, 2 or 3 rails should do the trick to bypass the main rail line.

In a certain save, there is a farm near the station. After some funding, there was a factory for both, milk and livestock, which produced food. That food was taken from said factories and transfered at the main transfer station, which was picked up by a train, and dropped off at a port.
