I don't think it's a scam, I think it's an advertising attempt using pig butchering tactics. I've never seen an instance of this where they ask for money or anything, though I have heard people say that the person encouraged them to buy in-game items (again in-game, not "send me the money"). But similarly, I've heard of instances where they didn't do anything like that, and just wanted a screenshot of the person's ID in the game.

So I'd lean towards, yeah, advertising using pig butchering. They probably get a commission for each person they bring into the game.
