Put residential far away from pollution, maybe build parks or trees or commercial in between
Try checking what your residential need (services and stuff like that) and keep the % high. They will upgrade and build taller buildings!
While you wait for the money to come in or buildings to upgrade, you can build decorations or plan roads in the mean time for fun!

Funnily enough TT started off as a PC game
