Completed 157 and the trial clock doesn't say time expired however 158 is not unlocked.

That's an old UI issue. Complete the Trial before the timer reaches 0:00 to advance.

I thought it's always been an issue. It sounds like 0:00 can be displayed any time there's less than 1 second left, but if you cut it too close, 0:00 is actually 0:00 (expired). Either way, I've ticketed it, so an engineer will take a look.

Used to be that anything but "Timer Expired" counted.

As indicated by leaderboard entries of 9:59 which would be when the remaining timer would show 0:00.

Honestly thinking it is because of all the timers running just like with timers getting out of sync.
