Something that I think would be kinda on theme and look decent would be to go into aseprite.. create a simple checkered flag pattern (you can make it white and black, should be fine)..
Idk how Unity handles parallax, but the idea would be when you pause, the pause menu is a parallax of the checkered pattern moving across the screen with some colored overlay.. and make the whole thing semi-transparent...
It's on theme-ish since checkered is related to racing, and it is a very clear visual indicator to the player that the game is paused or that the game state is different

Idk if that's a good or a bad thing. Sometimes when I hyperfocus on a new game I'm super into, i will dream in terms of the game, and when I wake up I believe I have to continue to abide by those rules for a solid few minutes until I fully wake up

to answer your question clearly, down does nothing, but if you press up you boost upward
as if everything was reversed

We need a level where you gotta weave up and down, so get the reverse grav and the grav normalizer back and forth.. then you can introduce another item the Jetpack which lets you fly up against gravity, no need for grav power up
Boost down probably isn't good in reverse grav unless you have a good side area leading back up that you can only access by slowing your ascent

I do like it's style
i think the main issue is the repetitive part is too in your face
if it was slightly lower volume or less prominent it would be just a beat
but it pulls attention a bit too much
