Yeah coefficient is calculated off european performances, it should only go up from here imo, with more & more french clubs performing. The thing is back in the day there weren't many European spots in Ligue 1, it was only 1st and 2nd that got UCL, so that's kind of handicapping aswell.

That's on the one hand, but on the other hand, we have a serious serious TV rights problem because of covid, and general incompetence from the league representatives, meaning literally all of Ligue 1 is broke

I'm not only saying this because I'm a Montpellier fan, but this applies to many other clubs like Reims etc.

Trust me we want to play Europe, but the truth is we're in such a deficit every season that we have to sell every possible player because our budget relies on tv rights that are now super low.

The fact that Southampton this season (12 pts in 38 games) got over 200 million in TV rights, which is almost more than the total of all clubs in Ligue 1 combined, including PSG, is a serious problem.

I'll just give you the case of my club.

We were in a relegation battle this entire season, and up until the end of the transfer window, we were losing many games but then started winning against teams like Monaco & Toulouse (who was on a good run), we were 3 points off safety, on a good dynamic.

And then on the final days of the transfer window, we sold not just our top 1 goalscorer, but our top 1, top 2, top 3 and top 4 goalscorers in the entire team without replacing them. We were able to grab one SINGLE point since January. 15 games, 14 losses, the only point we got since January was against Reims (when we were already relegated), ironic because giving us that point sent them to Ligue 2.

It's a bit more complicated, because many other factors came into our relegation & it was just waiting to happen, but the OG problem that caused everything is money.
