And it assigns a value of xG based on how likely it was that a goal was scored from that position

Why should it take into account the quality of player?

Let’s say Messi scores 60 goals off of 40 xG, which is the best

And then Messi scored 50 goals the next season off of 40 xG. Messi’s still the best, so we’re not getting much from the stat

If Messi is an actual good finisher, he would over perform his xG in a large sample

that’s how we measure how good a player is with regards to scoring

First and foremost, most players don’t over perform their xG significantly, so for 99% of players, it’s more important that they rack up large amounts of xG

La Liga doesn’t use statsbomb

I’d trust the Statsbomb xG over the other companies

It’s not

Statsbomb have better technology and take into account more variables like shot speed and GK positioning and how many defenders were in between the shooter and the goal

In a large sample, it does work and it’s far less biased and emotional than the eye test which can often say incredibly illogical things like ‘we had 5 half chances, we should’ve scored 5 goals’. Because we all think that ‘sitters’ should be 100% goals but their not

So he’s better than 92% of midfielders for that stat

Now IMO being in the 90-100th range is what I call being elite in that category only

But unless your standards are ridiculously high, 92nd percentile is excellent for a player who is in a non-dominant team
