Okay, maybe I've exaggerated it a bit and I apologise, but Messi is the player that's keeping the club afloat at the moment. When he will leave, Barcelona will most likely find themselves in a very similar situation, just like this one. There's no long-term project or thinking for the current Barcelona team, and the consequences of these current “hidden” problems by Messi’s brilliance will be seen and felt only after he will leave Barcelona. If Messi does not score, nobody else will step up. It's shocking how much one of the best teams in the world are dependent on one player to always score. Coutinho and Dembele were brought exactly for this reason, but have failed miserably. The Midfield will not even attempt to have a go at the goal and the defenders can't score from set plays. The last time Barca won the Champions league, the goals were shared between Messi, Suarez and Neymar. Now it's Messi or bust.
They need to get over their Messi dependence and find other ways to score. Their plan A is Messi. If that fails, there's no plan B. They do not have any aerial threat. I tell you what, it'll take a long time for Barcelona to step up again. Believe it or not, if Messi didn't play against Elche, they would've at least drawn.
