Iago Aspas initially received a red card for hitting Antonio Blanco, but after consulting VAR it was changed to a yellow (9'). In the 17th minute Antonio Blanco crossed from the left wing and Kike García headed Alavés 1-0 ahead. In the 42nd minute Iago Aspas scored for Celta, but it was disallowed by a semi-automatic offside due to the position of Anastasios Douvikas. Early in the second half Antonio Blanco had another chance to increase the score for Alavés, but his shot did not find the back of the net. Celta were pushing hard for an equaliser and Iago Aspas came close again with a header saved by goalkeeper Antonio Sivera. Williot Swedberg received the ball in the penalty area in the 65th minute, tricked a defender and scored with the outside of his foot to equalise 1-1. Alavés tried to regain the lead after the equaliser; Hugo Novoa Ramos missed a pass from Carlos Vicente and Asier Villalibre lost a one-on-one with Celta goalkeeper Iván Villar. In the 84th minute, a combination between Oscar Mingueza and Williot Swedberg allowed Iago Aspas to enter the penalty area and beat Antonio Sivera, giving Celta a 2-1 lead. Just before the end of the match, Iago Aspas had a chance to score a second goal from a cross by Ilaix Moriba, but his shot narrowly missed the Alavés goal. The match ended in a 2-1 victory for Celta, giving them the lead in the table. The match took place at an unusual time, during the celebration of the patron saints of the cities and holidays in Spain, which underlined the exceptional nature of the season opening for both teams.
