#Uni Customizations

I’m pausing to cook dinner at the request of my mother but I’ll be back at it and then testing the cut later, and the reason I asked region is that I should be able to make a clean cut (with the Cricut) and mail one to you if that’s something you’re interested in
Yes please! I could pay for shipping and for your work. I want a cricut now lmao. Only for this stuff
Enjoy cooking dinner!
After I finalize it I’ll DM you about shipping (though it shouldn’t take more than a stamp or two)
Ok well if I'd thought of that I might of gone with the purple
I want the pink for the trans one though
Here let me get this in. So you guys can take it.
You are a genius
It’s pink and blue. And green I guess
For a sec I was like "there's no green on the trans flag" then I realized you meant the default pink uni faceplate xD
First is tama uni promotional art
Second is asexual
Third is ghost trick. I thought it looked cool
These are free for people to take
Lol I put a green dot on the trans flag and now that’s how it is officially
The dot can represent the agender community, since that flag has green
Hmm maybe just keep the asexual monochrome cause the purple might not work. I’ll check. Mom is letting me use her fancy colour printer
Nice (and yeah, it'd be tricky to try to match the purple of the shell)
Lmao I don't plan to put them back either. I put them in a baggie and put them away.
I put them in the box
why are the screws so hard to take out 😭
i got the caps off but the screws wont screw
i think i stripped one of the screws 💔
Did you look at the google drive that’s pinned here?
Push really hard and make sure you have the right size and stuff
Sorry I had a fiasco with cooking (thank you nature) and I’m now coming back to chat, but if you’ve got a high DPI version of the file when you’re done, sure!
Could anyone help me with the faceplate custom I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it. I feel so dumb
Are you trying to figure out how to design or how to cut, or something else?
How to design :(
I can’t get the image the right size, and the program I’m using doesn’t even let me put two images on top of each other
You don’t wanna do this in docs. If I may recommend: Gnu Image Manipulation Program (I don’t know if the bot will get me for using the abbreviation) is 100% free and way less frustrating
There are other options out there too but it’s the one most people who don’t want to pay (or not pay) Adobe or to use another paid software turn to
I’ve used it myself and I think it’s pretty comprehensive
I didn’t know that program existed! I’ll try it, thank u so much
No problem!!! If you still need help, I’ll be looking at chat every so often while finishing up that Magic design from above, feel free to ping.
Thank you for the video guides. I used a little pin to get the screw covers off and it was so much easier than the Smart (thank goodness). I don’t have suctions or a hot glue gun
Jumping on the purple and blue trend for sure. The pink buttons looked too red against the purple for me 😞 I didn’t mind the pink back
hi, im sorry if this has been asked because idk what keyword should i type in.. which kinda paper should i print the faceplate?
I think it’s up to you on the kind of appearance you’re looking for. It will probably look nicer on cardstock than standard printer paper
I used glossy poster/tabloid paper at Office Depot with their fancy printer and it looks very nice
Although that probably has mostly to do with the DPI of their fancy printers
okok.. i can just laminate it after printing the in standard printer paper? or i can just print in photo paper
I think lamination would be overkilling. It might be too thick
idk if the printing service has those kinda paper tho :c
Photo paper probably would work
From what I've seen, cardstock is too thick, so lamination is probably too thick
Sent a friend request. The designs are also here
Here
o7
So many awesome designs. I’m telling myself I don’t need to use this as an excuse to buy a cricut. (I have a hand tremor that makes cutting neatly impossible).
Hmm.... could probably design a version of the vaporwave faceplate I did that would work with the pink later. Just a matter of the right colors.
i put the caps on and used a glue gun stick to take the screen off
its much easier this way cus i tried the first way and the screen litterlly flew off and ended of in a random corner of my room when i pushed it out 😭
i love the vaporwave asthetic so much :)
D:
Were you trying to remove it without unscrewing the device?
i did unscrew it the first time
and i did make a pretty sweet faceplate and put it in but taking the screen out the first way is harder at least for me :((
my screen got a long scratch on the underside of it :(
not too noticable but eeh
my own take on the starry v3 shell
(latter two are designed to better complement a black uni shell bc....Reasons)
(gotta be honest, i'd rather find someone to make these for me than try and cut em out myself
)
@glacial heron you might have a business on your hands lmao. Also sorry for the ping
No worries on the ping!
If you’re in the US (or I suppose any part of North America honestly), I’m looking to see if I can cut faceplates with my Cricut, if I can make them look nice I’ll probably offer to do cuts for whoever wants and just ask for shipping costs.
that would be AWESOME, thank you
Currently working on the Magic On faceplate request update incoming but it’s 11 PM so it’s too late for testing the cut now (Cricuts are a lil noisy) but I’ll be trying tomorrow morning.
I’ll keep everyone posted
As for the faceplate
Still not fully pleased but it’s much nicer
I think not having the words makes it harder at the bottom to fill some of the empty space so I’ll probably cave and fill in the teeny tiny stars in that area, but other than color optimization it’s pretty far along
I’ve been using my teal Magic Meets for a reference because all the plates in a line are the same except the color palette of the background
I cannot figure this faceplate stuff out. Can I pay someone to make this image into a faceplate minus the blue and white borders to the screen? I don't have much but I can do $5.
I can add it to the to do list, I think I’m calling it quits for tonight so I can give my loved ones some less divided attention, but if you don’t mind a like 24 hour(?) wait I’ll try and tackle it
It should be easier than the Ons because those images are much clearer
(I wouldn’t ask for any payment)
Oh! Well its still on the table if you change your mind. Thank you so much
I love the way you said that LOL
Yeah the server blocked me lol
figured
I feel like recreating existing designs helps everyone with customization, so everyone wins in my head.
i think i mentioned some tama website and they didnt allow it either
Would you like me to dm you these pics so they dont get lost?
Yes please!
My Tamagotchi just told me "It's fine to talk a walk everyday" girl do u have something u want 2 tell me
just fine huh??
So passive aggressive!
I planned on doing a few waves of remakes for different versions, I can do the love family V5s, if they don't get to it first lol
I'm loving how perfectly sized the Uni is for the connection designs, vs the smart, which had like, zero room for designs
Ok!
no uni yet but I made a faceplate based on my vtuber? (free to use, if anyone would even want to lol)
Awww it’s so cute
I can't unsee that the crescent moon has stars shining through the "missing" section
Yes, because the actual shell glitter shows through on the real one haha
._. Why would you curse me with this
ANYWAYS, I'm currently gauging interest in if I were to do a few batches of custom Uni buttons
And I do mean a few. Probably would be no more than ten people/button sets per batch, and no more than five batches
Just like, different colors? Maybe might be interested 🤔
What about solid color replacement front plates? Or is that too complex for you to replicate realistically?
That's def too much to replicate
Different colors and maybe options of low profile buttons that don't stick out quite so far from the shell
Wait by front plates do you mean the faceplate lens? Or the solid color plastic housing on the front half of the Uni?
I guess it doesn't really change much either way
Right cuz then you could just print a different faceplate art for it
Honestly just plain paper will do the trick: it's thin enough to fit and it's never exposed so it doesn't need to be sturdy
Ahhh okok.. but what about those that give glossy look?
It's going to be covered by the screenlens, so I imagine a lot of paper textures won't be as noticeable anyway . Overall just pick something not too thick, that's the only hard requirement!
Thanks!
Narrowed down my choices now
Thank you @foggy rune for this beautiful faceplate
you got it!
So many people complaining about the screen. Today, I've done something that I couldn't even imagine. Cutting the plastic screen and replaced with a new glass one
Looks good, can't really tell
People who have already replaced their faceplate, what method did you use? Did you guys take it apart or use a glue stick/suction cup to remove the screen?
Super tempted to just find a suction cup and try to pull the screen off like that but I’m also terrified of breaking my Uni 😥
Personally I think it's probably easier to just take it apart. You risk less damage to the tabs on the faceplate that way since that's the way it normally comes off. The painful part is the screw caps though but once you've removed those it'll be easier to swap the faceplate as many times as you want in the long run. Plus you can swap the buttons.
do you guys print using belen's A4 or only the one small one that you guys designed on it?
I was thinking of doing this same thing, what did you use to remove the screen from the frame?
although on the other hand, you risk damaging the tamagotchi since you can't turn it off for disassembly 😭 im sure i read someone managed to short their battery with the screwdriver :c
Why were they getting the screwdriver anywhere near the battery lol
Just remove the back four screws, remove the back, pull the board out, and you're good.
The two screws attached to the board are just there to keep the LCD screen's frame attached to the board.
LOL that's the type of person who shouldn't be opening electronics
i cant find it
but yeah there's loads of people taking them apart that shouldnt be doing 😬
someone on one of the fb groups stripped a screw and sent it back to amazon for a replacement
I've personally only used the A4 one
Thankiuu!! Printing these tomorrow and hopefully i get to change the faceplate
thats pretty grim
Oough. That's true
Probably not great if you lack careful hands and rubber gloves
Who cleans cleans a cartridge with spit....
Argh I need to edit the gdrive video... I removed the two pcb screws that time because I was doing a full disassembly including separating the screen from the board to take pics for the hacking channel
There’s a guide to removing the faceplate with tape on the FAQ guide that just got posted!
That sounds waaaay easier and less risky (and if the risk is wearing the down the tabs vs stripping the screws or bricking the device… definitely worth it, right?)
I'm personally more comfortable with disassembling it than pulling the screenlens out from the front, but it's good to have diff methods more people can use! Like for removing the screw caps
Wait where is this guide cause I missed it 😅
The thing is I plan on just replacing the faceplate once and that’s it so as long as I don’t break the tabs the first time around I guess I’m ok? I don’t mind opening up the device but my clumsy but would 100% strip the screws or somehow manage to short the battery 😂
Then again I’m also unlucky enough to break the tabs first time around so there’s that too 😭
If you're only doing it once or twice you should be fine, it's when you're constantly popping it on and off that it would become a problem.
Mine, I was popping on, popping off, readjusting, popping on, popping off, and I did it a few times and noticed one of the two tabs on the right side (the ones that are literally right next to each other) was shorter. It could have been short from the getgo but I wasn't risking it so I popped it back in place and left it.
I miiiight do it one more time to set screen protectors and background if I ever find one I like.
Yeah this Uni I’m probably only going to change the faceplate once so it matches my pix. If I can ever snag a used Uni in the future for cheap like I did for the pix I’ll probably do more
If I can convince my husband to help me take it apart I would go for the tear down method but I just have a heavy hand when it comes to stuff like this and I really don’t want to strip the screws
Fingers crossed I don’t destroy the tabs using the tape method 🤞
Changed my faceplate again to this custom one of my boys Mogget & Merlin!
Gorgeous! Did you apply that paper with decoupage?
Such good cat names
It's spray paint and nail art decals sealed in UV resin!
So cool!
I use this to remove it which requires quite skills and patience 🥲
I respect the hustle, I'm sure the unbreakable screen is worth it!!
I wonder if I can CNC machine replacement screen lenses
I saw this on Reddit earlier and I love it!!
Holy shit I actually have one of those.
💪🏻 power tools
I love this lol
Changed my faceplate! Unfortunately I have to open it up again later cuz I put a fingerprint on the inside and didn’t see it earlier >.<
Those are the worst. Also I love the tamagotchi some faceplate you put on
If the fingerprint is in the removable screenlens, then go for it! I had the same happen to me lol as soon as I closed it and turned it around I saw a spec of dust on the inside
If the spec/print is on the electronics screen itself it's better to leave it be as even a microfibre cloth can damage it
Love the design too
Thanks!
I’m pretty sure it’s the removable one…but I’ll have to check. Thanks for the warning about the electronics screen. I was super careful not to touch it so I hope it’s not on that one >.<
Good luck! It's probably in the removable lens mostly because that's what we're touching so much when changing the design so I'm sure you're good
Yay!
What kind of glass did you use? Like where did you get it? And how did you secure it? I'm amazed and curious!
that looks awesome! it looks very witchy ❤️
Well painters tape is definitely not working 😭 idk how to apply enough force to take the faceplate off without just peeling the tape off
What kind of pliers can you use for the screw caps?
Not sure if you tried this but I saw someone remove their faceplate with a suction cup lol
New fear unlocked for when I do mine
I would totally do that if I had a small enough suction cup 😂
I wish it was just easier to do this 😭
geez i have even more respect for people who customize now that i've tried it! it's hard! the colorshift spraypaint i used clumped in some places even on a second try painting, so i may give it another go some other time, or add a glittery sealant to disguise it
I learned with spray paint that it's better to go in with light mists and aim for 3 coats rather than try and blast it all in one go.
i did multiple coats but i think my hand was just too heavy each time
Ah. Did you also sand it well?
Wrote a little guide on how I modified my Tamagotchi Uni to make removing the plastic faceplate easier in the future, so I can swap out paper ones whenever I want. (Also a few paragraphs on how I did a very similar mod on other models) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y8COEYs1RtSrS2FQzKIn8od03sJgyTuWiy9FctY2Bls/edit?usp=sharing

i sanded but it's possible i didnt sand enough!
May I ask, which numer of sand paper you recommend ?
And which spray paint?
I haven't receive my tama uni yet but im planing to customize it but im scared too to fckit up?
Another questions, have anyone painted the back? 👁️👄👁️
This is a really cool idea, just like the TamaGo!
Very small ones. Using a needle would also work but keep in mind you will never be able to sew with that needle again
That's actually where I got the idea from haha, my old TamaGo. I was like "I wonder if I can do that on my Pix... hmmm"
Wow this is really awesome! Great idea, well written too c:
Also made me laugh with the bed thing, I don't think I'd have been able to tell from the photos 😂 but still funny and definitely something I'd have done in the past
Does anyone know the maximum GSM that we can use for the faceplate? And is it just around the borders that it can't be too thick? I would like to make some details that are a tiny bit more 3D but no idea how much space there is left.
I would say the borders are where you need to be careful, but also you'd want the entire surface to be as close as possible so you don't put a lot of strain on the plastic tabs where they could eventually break. I used 65lb / 176 g/m² and would say that's the thickest I would go.
Thank you!! Then i know the limitations 🙂
man, i stall for a day and the gottagotchi black uni case is already sold out
Haha yes, I already bent a needle beyond repair trying to get the caps off with no luck. Ordered a glue gun so hopefully that works
I used a plastic thumbtack! Like the ones you push into cork boards 📌
Having that plastic to grip made it pretty simple. I’d recommend trying that too. Saved me from buying a glue gun
I painted my uni & made a new paper faceplate. I had to print it at walgreens on their photo paper (luckily not too thick) but I forgot walgreens scales stuff up before printing so it was a little too big. I just cut it down some and I'll try printing it at the library some other time, but I think it works okay for now.
I used colorshot aromatherapy & also colorshot clear gloss.
God that glossy finish is so nice
Yeah I was gonna go for matte at first but the gloss won me over pretty immediately lol
Looks amazing!!!!
That it such a nice lavender! Goes a lot better with the default back and buttons than the normal purple does imo
You guys are so talented with these faceplates
Hi hello how do you feel about this? This is the tama directly traced, with nothing moved to account for the cutoff. Is this what you wanted, or did you want the details to be moved to fit within the border? (Top left dots are my color swatches, ignore those.)
Everything’s been drawn, it’d be a matter of lassoing and shifting.
I think I found a good enough reference to do the other one where when I scale the reference to trace from it doesn’t muddle everything, after I get the verdict on shifting or not I’ll start that one.
anyone figure out how to get the faceplate off without hot glue?
also is it the same with the On faceplate?
Disassembly or masking tape
how does masking tape work?
#1131934702668877908 message
do you think the same trick will work for the on?
I don’t think so, based on my experience with the On, but it’s possible. The On screenplate is SIGNIFICANTLY larger
And has more tabs keeping it in
OH MY GOD! This is so good 😭😭 I would like if you’re up for it the details moved to fit in the border, but I totally understand if u don’t have time for that! Thank you so so so so much
I definitely have time for that! I’ll see what I can do to optimize the space
I’m so grateful that you’ve done this! You have no idea how happy I am
Omg thank you for sharing that, I would have missed it and that look so easy
No problem!!!
Did the masking tape trick work for you because I have not idea how to get that to work 😭
Better?
Love love love
I’ll get it ready for print and cut settings as well as normal manual cutting shortly
Oh my thank you so much.!!
No problem!!!
When do you think you’ll send them out?
Oh I still have to test my cuts, so it’ll probably be Monday at the soonest that they’ll be mailed out. But I’ll have the files for public use in a bit
hello! so like im trying to custom a faceplate but idk how to put pictures behind it or what app to use
What do you have access to? Do you have an iPad? Because the final step isn't just worrying about putting pictures behind it... it's also going to be accurately printing out the exact size you need.
got it
well right now i only have my pc and y phone but if ipad is needed i could ask to used one borrowed
if it doesnt bother you i could dm you ((:
Well I asked iPad because people can use Procreate, but for PC there's also Photoshop and Illustrator. While I haven't tried it because it's just a hobbyist's tool (sorry lol I'm a professional graphic designer) - I heard good things about Canva the website.
There are also substitutes for Photoshop that are browser-based, but I don't know how they fair... Like: https://www.photopea.com/
Photopea Online Photo Editor lets you edit photos, apply effects, filters, add text, crop or resize pictures. Do Online Photo Editing in your browser for free!
oh i used to used procreate before, that would have been a great idea tho!
id draw frome time to time
ohh thanks you ! i will see what i can do ((:
Photopea is nearly 1:1 with Photoshop, I use it a lot when I'm not home lol
Okay! If you're familiar with that then go for that tool for sure! And just make sure to keep the image at the right size so when it's printed, it prints right. Make sure your canvas is an 8.5x11 document if that is your paper size and then don't scale it up/down when printing.
Oh nice!
I'm currently planning out the logistics of the Uni custom buttons. Current plans are for three different styles: original, domed, and low profile. Any other suggestions?
Spikes
Are u making molds and stuff? Will u b selling them?
Make butterfly buttons!!
Can you maybe draw what you mean?
I made this on Snapchat really quickly but
Oh my. You should make leaf buttons
Disregard my statements I’m running with the question
that's not really possible to do
the buttons have to come up from inside the device, meaning the heads of the buttons need to be smaller than the holes they come through
Cherry MX? /j
domed sounds cool! is something like a fake gem cut feasible? like the ID's shell but simplified like a rhinestone to fit the small buttons
the buttons are so small it probably won't show
that makes sense
What about materials? I do love the squishy feel of silicone buttons.
I'm honestly not sure about that. It might be possible but I'd have worries about longevity
I have not tried yet I think it's still better for the tama to be off, and I need to buy painter tape,
- I want to design my faceplate and didn't have time yet
what width masking tape are you using?
Lots of people seem to be struggling with this so here's a quick little tutorial. Hope it helps!
Just did this!
This seems really overkill for a faceplate removal
I almost wonder whether one of the old micro suction cup nerf darts would work to lift the faceplate
Thank you, this is magical
Ohh thanks for the video! Did you wait until the battery run out or do you think it's fine to do it still charged since it doesn't require opening the back?
Honestly I just made sure to avoid hitting the middle button while doing it lol
Mine was on the entire time
I assume the main thing is, be careful not to get anything on the exposed screen
actually I'd say it's more important to avoid getting fingerprints and smudges on the inside of the clear faceplate. The LCD can be cleaned safely with a soft cloth and some pure rubbing alcohol, but doing that to the inside of the faceplate would cause scratches
I'd recommend wearing gloves while doing this just to be safe, and be careful about only grabbing the faceplate by the edges while it's removed from the tama. A can of compressed air also helps immensely with clearing any dust off the LCD and faceplate before putting everything back together
def avoid getting smudges on either though if at all possible
Why plastic so soft, why bandai
generally, it's because softer plastic doesn't crack as easily
but yeah the Uni definitely goes overboard with how easy to scratch the screen is
So far I've been pretty lucky, mine wasn't really scratched when unboxed, and doesn't seem to get scratched much
Mine wasn't scratched much out of the box either, but despite being either on the table or in a little pvc coin purse since, it's gotten a whole range of little scuffs all over the faceplate. Nothing super noticeable, or that polywatch won't clear up when I get some, but really mysterious.
Ok I might have messed up, I used I think 1.5” painters tape instead of masking tape. Going to see if I can find masking tape and give it another go! Thank you for the video!
ahh, painter's tape makes more sense as it tends to be much stickier than masking tape
Haha I think you meant less stickier cause the painters tape just peeled right off without really adhering regardless of what I tried 😭 Masking tape is supposed to stick better and not really come off so I hope that works better!
the blue tape i mean...idk i might be getting them mixed up
i always thought that one was stickier
if you want big sticky, go for electrical tape. there's a risk of residue though
same with duct tape
I got them mixed up for some reason too! I read sonters instructions and for some reason I thought they were using the blue painters tape. Masking tape is a lot stickier but it shouldn’t leave much of a residue like duct tape. The painters tape I used might have theoretically worked if I left it on a lot longer so it could really adhere to the screen but I still feel like it wouldn’t really get sticky enough
well shucks, i got bamboozled! thank you for clarifying. i hope you can try it with some stickier tape soon
Possibly the temp and humidity could be affecting things too
And the particular brand of tape
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1IbjlH0S9Gnkh8yZQe3a5VI4HsNyEIuFU I’ve got the two completed faceplates in this folder in PNG, PSD, and Procreate formats. If possible I’ll get SVG versions made when I get home in a few hours.
i sanded down my last attempt at a paint job and redid it with lighter layers and much more drying time, and while it's not perfect it's definitely better!
:O gorgeous!!
i don't know if anyone else has mentioned this yet, but some of the default faceplates that come in the uni are a little misaligned. if you're tracing your original faceplate to make a new one and the new paper is thicker than the default, you may want to check the fit before you reassemble. mine was really tight against one of the buttons, and made that button feel "sticky" with my new faceplate until i trimmed that part of the plate back
This looks wonderful!!!
Color swapped buttons + original strap = bisexual flag uni
anyone have any good sources to find backgrounds for using for faceplates?
i really cant find much online that's not crusty reposted jpegs 😭
It was the same with the Pix and On as well
Thank you for this. I have a question. How did you make the outline for the faceplate? I’m trying to alter the inner screen window to make it a smidge larger but I can not seem to.
What program are you using?
I tried in Design maker and Inkscape
Design maker would not be the best place to edit, I recommend doing it in Inkscape if that allows SVG edits and then importing to design maker. It should let you view the vector points of the SVG, and then to ungroup the two shapes, edit the screen face one, and regroup them. (Sorry for the delay, got roped into helping my mom set the light timer.)
I’m very aware, lol, but thank you. I typically know how to edit vector images, but it isn’t letting me do anything to the outline, so I’m not sure how the outline was originally made. That or I’m just being stupid, haha.
I was able to edit it in Vectornator without issue
That’s not to say that you’re stupid, because clearly you’re not, it’s that maybe it’s the program or how it opened the SVG
I’ll definitely try that then, because can edit all the other parts of the svg, but not the actual outline. 🥲
Just for confirmation (I know, it’s the turn off and on question of editing): you’re editing the path itself and not the curve mask, right?
I thought I was, but to be honest, it was super late last night, and hence like I said maybe I was being a dumb. 😂 I’ll have to give it another go when I get some free time later, and I’ll report back. Thanks.
No problem! Late night editing is definitely a different experience
tried cutting out one of my faceplates on my own.......Bleh
where's a good place i can get this done professionally, preferably somewhere brick & mortar
I don’t know of any brick and mortar locations that specialize in precision cutting one-off items
The best option I can think of is to find a library or maker space with a laser cutter.
got it! i guess this will have to do for now
One piece faceplate:)
I made a budget xacto knife to cut it out and it turned out better than my first one 😭
Still a little rough but I like it
damn, my mom is starting to complain about the noise (how obnoxiously loud uni is). i don't blame her lol. any ideas how to cover the speaker?
I used duct tape ( three layers ) and it works pretty well. That with the case on it’s much more digestible imo
I know a lot of people are using washi tape as well
i have washi tape but i was thinking of shoving something inside while i'm going to dissasemble it anyway
(between the speaker and the plastic above that covers it)
Okay, I still can’t edit the outline in the outline only file in Inkscape, it does work perfectly fine in Vectornator, the problem is I’d prefer to not use mobile, and don’t have a Mac. HOWEVER, the bigger svg is showing all the points correctly, and I’ll just delete the parts I don’t need. 😂 I still have no idea what is wrong with the other file, but it’s definitely some quirk of the program. It was driving me nuts.
Would it make sense to edit in Vectornator, save, and send back to Inkscape to do the rest?
That might work if I need it, but I think I already have a solution that involves less hoop jumping. 👍
Ok so tape didn’t work so gonna use a glue gun for the screw covers and take the whole thing apart. I just wanted to clarify, do you use the glue gun on the screw caps and then stick the glue stick on there or…? Sorry if it’s a dumb question 😅
The way I did it with the smart was drizzle some glue in a blob just big enough to grab on the caps, wait for it to cool to the cap, and then grab it by the glue to remove.
I assume the same applies to the Uni, but you can also melt the end of a stick, then stick the melty end to the cap and follow the rest as above
Do you have a transparent background PNG of this?
I do, I'll post it when I get home and tag you
Thank you!
Somehow it didn't copy from photoshop with transparency
i just found a new way to remove the face plate from the uni (but its probably more risky than the suction method)
i was able to get tweezers underneath it where the corner is next to the buttons, should lift off fairly easily. i made a mistake though and shoved the tweezers too far into there and scratched the screen
(its actually way easier to remove than the pix imo)
Well, I’ve learned that if I do faceplates I’ll definitely need to have them as SVGs because I’m watching it cut out the 2cm marks.
Also for whatever reason, it was WIGGLING as it cut out the rightmost plate, but not the others (rest in pieces to my ink cartridges I guess)
(This is pre-cut)
I wondered that as well, maybe we can make a cut line SVG
Post cut: need to do some more calibration, or to be better at positioning the paper
oooh, what are you using to cut them? laser?
The basic SVG is actually a cut line one, as long as we take the SVG with the lines and import it, all we have to do is delete the guidelines before printing and cutting
Also if you want a specific design let me know, i wouldn't mind playing around on PS some more
Cricut!
Laser is debatably less annoying to work with (based on my experiences using one in high school)
it depends on how it's set up, it can be finnicky to align the paper correctly
at least that's my experience with our laser cutter
Yeah, that was definitely a thing that occurred. I remember that issue distinctly
I'm going to be cutting mine on ky neighbors cricut cutter when it arrives
Btw how thick of paper can we use? I have some nice cardstock I might want to use
not this thread making me want a cricut despite not even owning a uni 💀
Unfortunately I’ve deemed these unsuitable for actual use, given the print job, but it looks like the cut is nice.
but...imagine all the Crafts.....
Dude do NOT get a Cricut, if you want a machine cutter buy a Silhouette
What about silhouette makes it better?
I bought mine during the pandemic, and a few months after Cricut went “hey so we wanna limit your uploads unless you pay for our service, and reuploading the same image but adjusted does count against the 5 uploads you get” and the entire community went “FUCK NO”
And while they haven’t tried that again, I do not trust them to leave that idea alone
:O very much noted. i've only briefly read about each, but i'll veer toward a silhouette now
I'll look into silhouette too
does it work without an internet connection?
Trying to limit people to 5 uploads per month (with no rollover iirc) unless they pay $10 a month did not go over well
I have never tried to do it without internet because I like getting the updates to the software but I assume so
per month excuse me
and as long as the devices aren't permanently dependent on the internet for usability, that makes me feel better
I’ve never needed a persistent internet connection, only Bluetooth (and you don’t have to use Bluetooth, but I like it more than hooking it up to the laptop via cord)
nice nice, and surely the silhouette is the same. but how can it limit you to 5 i wonder?
They really lean into suggesting you use proprietary materials and tools. I bought their scoring blade, but I haven’t bought anything else of theirs except sometimes vinyl.
Via the software needed to run the machine
You have to use Design Space to cut things
And it would be able to keep track of how many items you upload because it stores the uploads afterwards until you manually delete them
ahh see that concerns me too, no alternative softwares if that one goes poof
Yup
and you end up with a big ol brick
I’m not sure if Silhouette has this issue or not, I don’t feel inclined to try to sell my Cricut to buy a Silhouette so I haven’t investigated lest I get Silly Ideas
I have played around Cricut software and it does seem kinda scammy
They're always trying to sell you things
Ahh they look so good
@glacial heron @polar rapids I looked into it and it seems the free version of the software has less features than the cricut but you can upgrade for a one time fee rather than monthly costs
This is why I do not recommend Cricut. It’s a good machine, just not a great company.
hey, i wanted to ask if it is ok to send that imagen with those 4 faceplate (so it have the exact extent to print later as well)
thanks beforehand
Slightly confused what the request is but if you’re asking about sending the paper so you have it for cutting later, it’s actually something your cutting machine handles and has you print based on how it optimizes them on the sheet.
You just upload the faceplate images as SVGs (so that you can delete the measurements after scaling) and your cutting software will lay them out as efficiently as possible and then calibrate itself to cut the faceplates.
sorry my english is not 10/10 but of what i can tell we are not in the same page hehe
so i tried to said, if it is posible to just send this picture so i can print it later, reason is:
i havent resieve my tama yet but i would like to make some custom faceplate but idk which or how to print the exact L or H of it. ik it says 2mm X 2mm but idk which website or app to use or who i will i know that i have the exact size of it
i was just going to used the picture as an example or how big it should be
No worries on the English! Because of the way images scale in editing programs, using the paper in the picture there (which I don’t have a clean file of anyways because the cutting program creates it) could actually mess up your measurements rather than help you as an example.
You wouldn’t want to print the image I posted there, you’d want to take the files from the channel, and scale them yourself in Docs or Word or an editing program like Photopea, and then print them that way so that they’re high resolution.
If you took the image and imported it into Microsoft Paint (as an example) because of the way it fits images to pages when you print, the scale would be off. The 2cm by 2cm square is so that in whatever program you’re using, you can use it as a reference to make sure your scale is right.
I can absolutely help you with what websites/programs to use to make faceplates, and there’s a blank template of the faceplate pinned in this channel (it’s also just the first or second message in the channel)
now i get it ! thanks you alot !
No problem!! We’re all here to help as best we can.
Maybe. But I like being able to swap out the faceplates easily without any tools or disassembly. If I was just gonna swap it once and be done I wouldn't do this, but I like making seasonal ones.
I went to create a higher res version of the accessories faceplate and then realized after doing that that I can’t make it an SVG because of the colors
My uni will not die why is she so strong
Why not marry her off???
I meant the device itself, I need to start being more specific lol
Same! I did feel regret cause I can’t undo it but I’ve been making myself feel better
PDF's can also be used for saving vector images iirc
This is probably 100% true, but the issue at hand is unless I recreate every visible character with each color as a separate later, it won’t load into Design Space properly.
It’s the problem I had with the magic faceplate, it wouldn’t load in properly without everything vectorized and all colors on separate layers
@glacial heron as promised~
Thank you!!!
np!
I’ll be running it with my next print batch after I sort out my printer
nice! I'm not getting my tama until Aug 11 so if you use it definately show me!
Will do!
You might put a thin cloth in there, it should work. Very thin.
Oh god this was from so long ago. Discord just loaded the rest.
I for one appreciate it! It's something I want to try when I get home from Japan
I even emailed Bandai about it (along with the off-button issue and the fact that my tamaverse isn't updating even me manually updating it) in hopes they'll address it. Provide a volume setting or something. I'm extra surprised because here in Japan, the walls between houses are quite thin, and I really want to keep the volume low so as not to bother the neighbors in the morning/evening.
Glad this isn't just me with the tamaverse thing. First time it said updated but now it tells me there's no update found.
I've had the same characters appearing from Wednesday - Sunday. At first I thought I updated too late for it to count, and then the next day I forgot to update before visiting tamaverse, the day after that I remembered to to update first but still no good
What software r y’all using to calibrate the faceplate images cuz I cannot find one that I understand and can calibrate using only a part of the image
I’ve been using Design Space or Vectornator, but I’m sure there are other ways to do it. I just make sure my software allows me to specify what the dimensions of a shape I’m drawing is, draw a 2cm line or square, and then scale the whole image until the reference square is the same width/size of the line or square I drew.
Hey, anyone knows where can i find a tutorial video showing how to put a face plate on ? I'm too afraid to damage my New uni ahah, thanks
It's pinned here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n-7bUiFiJU give this a try first
Lots of people seem to be struggling with this so here's a quick little tutorial. Hope it helps!
Took my Uni apart and replaced the faceplate but I think the paper is too thin cause the light is shining through a bit. What kind of paper did you guys use?
I haven’t replaced mine but I think ur best bet would be replacing again with card stock
Do u use pc or Mac? I can’t get the size with shapes
I used regular paper and the light bleeds a bit only when I'm playing in the dark so I don't mind too much! There's various thickness of paper tho, I believe mine is 80g/m2
Dang... none of my art scales down to faceplate size/format very well lol
Gonna have to like... charge the tablet and draw something
it's probably a bad idea to disassemble uni with the battery charged isn't it
my posca markers arrived so i'm ready to start whenever possible
You could try playing a ton of games to drain the battery faster 😅
I don't recommend it if you're not extremely sure of what you're doing, but I've done it with it live every time
Watching Fuzzy n Chic remove her faceplate in her latest video is nerve-wracking
I used neither for the above process, but there are some PC strategies in #1133071028235546756
This thing from the passport might be neat
Wonder what photo or illustration they want you to put there
Hmmm
Not as good as i wanted it to be but it's not pink on the surface anymore at least lol
with faceplate
Nice!
well yeah visually it's nice but in touch idk. i used varnish that is normally intended for polymer clay stuff (and i think it got old because it's not smooth). anyone could do it better :p
lemme ruin it further ❤️
Nice!
as for the speaker can't do anything inside. there''s already a piece of foam stuck
If by "ruin" you mean make it gorgeous
nooo 😭
Is it possible to replace the foam maybe? Or place a bit of cardstock over the foam?
i don't know, it looked pretty snug in there. the part with holes looked liftable as it's kept by tabs but i don't want to ruin it
Fair! Well, I'll see what I can do when I get back home in week.
Aaand i left fingerprints inside the faceplate.
Whatever, it's not a museum piece
Last pic i swear
Love the snowy vibes, the pastel rainbow came out great too!
Those were supposed to be stars 😭 but thanks
it's liftable but the speaker itself has some kind of glue (not quite sure what it is - had the density of rubber cement but way stickier) keeping it attached to the part with the "wifi" holes. i was able to separate the two with an xacto blade for spray painting and just stick it back on after
I didn't sand it btw but it took a couple of layers to make all white
Hmmm knowing my clumsiness i would cut my finger trying
yeah i was definitely sweating doing it! wouldn't recommend unless you use an xacto pretty often. your end product still looks great tho!
Thanks ❤️
Does anyone know if I can take these pieces off? I’d like to make a mold of them and replace this with a custom resin piece. Does anyone know if that’s even possible?
There should be a pin that holds it all together
I saw the pin, I can’t figure out how to get it out
Push it out and it should just come off
You just need to use something small to push it afaik
What did u use to do that? I don’t have anything skinny enough to go all the way through okie dokie, Ty!
I have not tried nor do I have mine yet to try but I would say maybe a safety pin or something
speakin of custom resin pieces im wondering if anyone will ever make molds of the tamagotchi shells and sell them? i think having more colors would be so nice. (if i had the right materials i could do it but unfortunately i stripped the screws on my uni 😭 id have to buy another)
People already make custom Connections and other color version shells, hou_hai, mashimaro, electronicsdays
ooh, where can i find them?
I’m planning to make a mold of the back peice, if I’m successful I can maybe send one? Idk when I’ll do it tho or if it’ll even come out any good lol
that would be so nice! im not rocking with the purple shells pink back ngl
The purple shell is 90% pink and the pink shell is 90% blue lol
fr fr
I went with pink and am just gonna change the faceplate and maybe paint the front a different color
Bc it's basically blue lol
If I’m successful I’m planning on making a mold of the buttons too. I wanna make them matching with Holo pink glitter and clear
That would b amazing.. but would silicone buttons be hard enough for the uni?
i wish i didnt strip the screws on my uni by my stupid mistake of twisting the wrong way and just thinking they were really tight 😭 i can technically drill out whats left of it but that would destroy the shell. i would need a replacement
Also have any of y’all had success with painting/spray painting the silicone parts of the uni? I’m getting mixed answers on wether it’s possible or not
i wouldnt paint them, they'll crack
I really wanna spray paint the Watch band and front pink silicone piece baby pink
you can dye the white strap ive seen people do that
like soak it in dye. not sure the specifics
i might get myself a white band so i can do that!
ooooo let me see if u do!
ill send pics here if i ever do that, but i can't guarantee itll be soon. im kind of broke rn 💔
I wonder if I could mold a peice to snap into the speaker slot on the front pink piece to mute it a bit 🤔
check this! @polar ruin
i recently ordered a deep blue crochet case since im going for a blue/night theme for my uni. heres my faceplate, i wish i could switch the buttons out 😭
that would be super cool actually
Maybe I could use some clay and push it through the slots once it’s disassembled and then cut it to fit? Then bake and make a mold
Ty!!!
the thing is with the plug the top bit will have to be flush but not flush to where the pieces will break off. might be risky
I was thinking of using a silicone mould making kit to mould the hole as the flexibility would be a plus to avoid damage to the shell
if you did silicone maybe it would work but i wouldnt use clay
No I meant clay to make the mold and then I could fill the mold with something else
Mold? Mould?
However u spell it
Both are correct, it’s regional spelling differences
mb i read wrong
I will be so happy if more people start making resin shells, the current makers always sell out instantly
I'm looking into it. Wanted to make resin dice for my D&D group so maybe in the next month or so!
Ok no success getting the pin out of this. I think it’s a pressure pin ( hollow ) so I don’t think it’ll come out without it being completely unusable again. So I’d need to somehow find a replacement for it that specifically fits this thing. Any ideas?
Thought I could maybe snip it by pushing the flexible rubber aside just enough to get a clipper around it, but even then idk if I’d b able 2 get the rest of the pin out of the plastic part
i'm dying this is GOREGEOUS
Oh. My god
How did u even achieve this
Achieve what? The fingerprints? Lol idk i was trying not to touch that inner side but alas
Thank you ❤️
No!!! I meant how did u achieve the custom I’m in love
posca markers, opalescent faceplate from etsy (tinytigerink)
ok varnish is actually super inportant
without it, the paint from posca markers can just be scrapped off with fingernails lol
i just wish it was smoother and didn't feel so cheap
the only part i didn't apply varnish to is the plastic covering the speaker
i don't have anything for polishing
what kind of varnish did you use? or does anyone else have a reccommendation on a type of varnish that could be used that wouldn't compromise the plastic?
I had a fimo varnish laying around intended normally for polymer clay models
It's water based
Mine one is old though. It's crystallizing and being sandy
Any water based varnish should be fine i think
Did this come out perfect ? No. Did it come out better than I expected since I have hand shakes. Very yes
Not the best, first time painting. Just want to enjoy this thing now haha. Learned a lot if I ever try something like this again.
Love the yellow 🙂 I wish they would make more yellow devices
Heck yes, yellow is the best! Your tama looks great!
Send to meeeeee
I've tried. It's basically impossible without destroying either the plastic or the rubber watch band itself
on a different note, here's a little sneak preview of what I'm cookin up
In the stu 🔥🔥
Are u gonna sell finished buttons or j the molds?
planning on selling finished buttons
although I would like to once again say that I will only be selling the buttons for a limited amount of time
I will give u all my gotchi for a mold
I promise it’s valuable
It’s the new bitcoin
thing is I kinda suck at mold making lol
How’d u make the protos? That’s more than I could ever do
okay well, I just don't have much experience with it so far
I’m still trying to figure out how to take a mold of already existing stuff much less custom

took apart my Uni and used the buttons as the basis for modeling the ones in the photo in Fusion 360
from there, I'm gonna resin print a bunch of masters and polish and clean them by hand
then make molds of those, of which castings will be made and sold
How much would u b selling these for not asking for me I promise
the final casted buttons?
Yes
it's probably gonna be about $10-$15 per set
:000000000 nice
I know that's a bit on the pricey side though
I don’t think so lol
I did a poll and the most common responses for what price people were willing to pay was $5 and $10
You made the custom button protos, printed, molded, and casted I’d say the price is very fair
this is a really weird thing but like, as somebody who does prop stuff like this, thank you for being understanding about it lol
a lot of times I worry that my pricing on stuff is just too high even if I'm barely breaking even on materials
I think people have gotten so used to being able to buy things for cheap at stores like target and Walmart that we often forget how much time, effort and money goes into small scale operations
But yeah basically the plan right now is to make a google form for people to fill out to register interest in buying a set of buttons
I would love a ping for that when u open registration
Would u take customs? Like if I sent u a pack of glitter I like
Same! Would custom ones be an option then? 👀
Sorry I am asking SO many questions I just love the custom buttons so much
I will be doing enough batches that everyone who fills out that form will be able to buy a set of buttons. I'm probably gonna do batches in a couple different colors as well. Any leftovers after all of that will be sold here on the marketplace channels first, and any leftovers after those would then probably go up on my etsy
not sure about glitter. I can definitely try with some materials I have already to see how they turn out
OH MY GOD
I CHECKED UR PROFILE TO SEE IF U HAD UR ETSY LINKED AND I JUST REALISED ur the one that made the masking tape tutorial
oh yeah lol
I don't think I have it linked
I forget, there's either nothing on there or there's a single 3d printable file I made
is this what youtube fame is like lmao
Can I get a selfie? Will u sign my forehead please?
but yeah I hope people found the masking tape tutorial helpful. feels like most of what I've heard in response was "it didn't work"
omg I came to ask about buttons n making molds and y'all are already talking abiut it perfect
There's definitely a little nuance in doing it, but I'm also not sure whether I just had one with a loose faceplate or what
I haven't opened my uni up yet, are the rubber thingies from the buttons removable easily / transferable to another set?
the membranes?
yeah
oh sweet
I'd be doing this without a 3d printer so trying to figure out my options before I go and waste a bunch of silicone and resin lol
if you don't mind waiting, I am planning on selling custom button sets, at least for a little bit
otherwise, if you're impatient, casting your own now is def an option lol
I'm both impatient and I have the feral urge to just mess around with things and find out how they work hahaha
that is exactly my problem lol
I was trying to think of ways I could make a mold of the shell too
but I'm super new to mold making
me when new device launches
and I feel like doing that without having 3d printing access is just gonna be far too much effort
eh, honestly 3d printers help but they're just one part of the tool kit
if you don't have CAD experience, you're limited to the models others have made pretty much
oh for sure but I also have so many crafts supplies and tools that at this point I'm like if I had a 3d printer and a glowforge I would be at unlimited power
and even with CAD experience, trying to accurately recreate complex geometry (like the Uni) is frankly nightmarish
seems like it sent lol
true, I wonder if we can figure out a way to make like, shell cases for them more easily
Sonters didn’t u say it’ll b at least a month until the buttons are ready for casting
I know I wanna make a mold of my backplate so bad but I have no idea how 2 do it
that's my go-to "depends on how motivated I am to get this show on the road" time frame
realistically yeah. I'd expect a month or two from now to be when buttons would actually be arriving to people
man I have a lot of things to post that I need to either make look more professional, or accept they're as professional looking as I care to make them
lol I go with the latter part for my crafts 😂
cuz yeah I've been meaning to post some of this stuff but I've just been busy and I'm always paranoid about my work being bad
it's a tragic combination of perfectionism, anxiety, and procrastination
Mmm trying to imagine the best button colors now
Felt this
but yes I have "reverse-engineered" the Uni geometry reasonably well, at least well enough to make a rigid 3D printed bezel with watch strap attachment points
haha, I have bad adhd so I never post anything bc I forget, I've already moved on to the next project or I've lost interest by the time I'm done with something so same issue but opposite end of spectrum for reasons
I still definitely want to improve my work a little bit
that or just upload like, the main useful diagram I have
I will try to get a button mold going this weekend
happy to share my progress and brainstorm thru the process since I mostly just wanna see if I can do this at all
I'd say "pro tip" but I am NOWHERE near being a professional at mold making, so I guess this is an extreme amateur tip: use LEGO to build easy mold boxes
just make sure you really press down on the bricks to seal them as best as possible, and pour your silicone in somewhere that won't be damaged when it inevitably leaks a little bit
ooh yes I've seen that, also cookie cutters
COOKIE CUTTERS OMG THAT'S GENIUS
I saw it on YouTube and was like that's genius
are those little custom cast lenses for the eyes??
:O those are BEAUTIFUL
originally glass chips but I was just gonna use UV resin
sorry this is getting off-topic a little lol
I should go see if my silicone is still good
yeah 😅 well. Hopefully that will be a tama themed mold this weekend
Taking mental notes
How would u make a mold of something like the backplate of the uni? I can’t model so I was j gonna cover it in silicone by pouring a flat layer first, then setting the backplate on it and pouring over it and somehow making a two part mold
Problem is I have no idea how to do that
the way I've seen it done is you need to add some little pour spouts to suspend the part off the bottom of the mold
then pour in the first batch of silicone, wait for it to cure, then add a layer of mold release on top of that before pouring the second batch of silicone
This makes no sense to me I’m hopeless
same like I think I understand the concept but I can't explain coherently lol
I know, people in the Tama server are just so good at these things and I’m not, but I still know I’m good at other things
Thank u

the way I've done pour spouts in the past is with oil-based modeling clay
basically, a pour spout is a little built-in funnel in the mold into which you poor the resin
you ideally want to place them somewhere that won't show on the final piece, as they can be tricky to clean
with a bit of oil-based modeling clay, make a couple of little cones and press them onto the part you're casting. Where to place them exactly is hard to describe, it's one of those things you kinda get an intuition for
those cones will support your part off the ground and allow the silicone to create a sufficiently thick layer under your part
Oh, that's a better idea than what I was thinking: make small hole by pouring the mold around a craft wire or something
yeah, that probably won't be a sufficiently large hole
if you've ever done a plastic model kit, think about the way the pieces attach to that big plastic frame they come on
Took me a few tries to get it but it worked great for me. I was so happy to not have to take the unit apart
you basically want to do that but larger because resin pouring is done with gravity, so you need a wider hole to allow the resin to go through. You'll also want at least one vent hole for any air bubbles to be able to escape
glad to hear it!
I have an idea and I need to draw it and my apple pencil is dead lmao BRB in like 5 with a drawing
The little places marked '1' are where you want to be pouring the resin into
The one in the middle, labeled '2', is the air vent. You'll know to stop adding resin if/when the resin comes up into that vent
Diagonal shaded area is the first layer of silicone
I'd also like to add the following disclaimer to anybody reading this: I am not a professional at mold making, and this is by NO MEANS a complete guide on how to make a mold. There are steps I've left out. I'd HIGHLY encourage you to read some proper tutorials if you are thinking about trying to make a mold
Sorry I wasn’t checking chat for a second! Thank you all for your advice!
And especially Sonters, thank u for the detailed description and diagram of what I need
this is what I'm thinking MIGHT work
but also not a professional do NOT take this as instructions my brain just works faster than my capability to explain what I'm thinking of so that's the best I could do to explain what I'm imagining 💀
hello everyone! I have the Uni custom button registration form ready to go! https://forms.gle/8EPH4NRtqchaUWof8
@polar ruin @fallen thorn
Also sonters I think u should do a low profile dome :0
Thank u so so much!
I suggested clear buttons because I am very basic
Y'know, I somehow didn't take into account the idea that somebody would suggest just pure clear buttons
I was trying to think what would go best with a hypothetical clear-irridescent shell (like the 25th anniversary edition P1 re-release) - like if someone did custom resin ones. Though maybe the top half of the shell could be opaque white or something to provide some contrast, and the faceplate paper could be holographic.
Gotcha
Also clear buttons would go with just about anything!
I appended your entry in the spreadsheet that collects answers to specify you want true clear
Since #FFFFFF would normally indicate translucent white to me
Frosted white would be cool too, ngl
Yeah
I should have put #FFFFFFFF
Mmm a milky shell with milky buttons
(Jade-like translucence, but white)
Ngl if I saw a translucent white Uni, the first fluid my mind would compare it to would not be milk
-_-
Sorry, that was cursed
Very
Ok I searched "white jade" and got something along the lines of what I was imagining:
So, semi-glossy, and very slightly transparent.
Although arguably not as cursed as the lennytchi photoshop I made
I'm not sorry
I’m going to jam ur 3D printer
Joke's on you, it's already out of commission rn
The belts are worn out and I'm waiting for replacements
I’m going to make sure all of ur resin cures with a bunch of tiny bubbles
Hey at least I spoiler tagged it
This image invokes the same feelings in me as this one
I hate that I know the context behind that image
That's nothing, I've all of Homestuck. (Though, not being on Tumblr and not being a teen, idk if I really got the full experience. No trollsona for me.)
Getting a bit off topic here lol
Indeed - back to custom buttons and shells!
With so many people interested in resin casting, I'm hoping it will be easier to find custom Uni shells in the future
Well, easier to find custom tama shells in general
yeah
I know I probably could make some custom resin Uni shells
but I honestly don't really want to
Fair enough! I imagine it's pretty tricky
it's a lot of work and I don't have a Uni I'm willing to potentially sacrifice for the cause
Oof yeah forgot about that part
the yellow looks soooo good. makes me want one with a clear yellow back even more
Thank you! Definitely used too much paint and had to trim some areas down! Need to retouch the top a bit. Need a new faceplate design!
Light even coats 😛 that's the trick
Gonna be putting up these on my etsy soon methinks
I've printed a few other variations to use as examples of the custom options that can be mixed and matched on the design
Just gotta take some nicer product photos haha
I should go back to making faceplate designs
Trans, lesbian, bi, what’s the other two? Sorry
Also I need your Etsy. I need to buy one of these
I don’t know if you can send it in the server so I opened my dm
omg these are all stunning!! the trans pride one is the cutest
The other two aren't any specific pride flag colors haha
Ok that’s what j thought. Pls dm me your Etsy
I'll make a thread linking it later probably! If you want, I can ping anyone interested when stuff is up.
Ping me pls
👍
I can't link the Etsy yet since I don't have the faceplates up yet haha
omg yes def please ping me too!
I love the bisexual gradient one! Though if you ever made it with woopatchi I'd be over the moon
Either way I'll definitely be purchasing one, they're basically exactly what I was imagining would be perfect for the Uni's vaporwave aesthetics. And the bi one would look so great on the pink uni, given its main colors are already pink and blue.
neeeed it
I can add a woopatchi version! And maybe a few other colors too. Need more than just warm gradients too now that I realize it. For like. When painting the shell other colors.
Gonna also add options on the listing for custom requests like characters and colors that aren't listed when I'm done too
Forgot to mention, the grid lines are made to align roughly with the grid on the vaporwave room
Next level alignment and dedication!
The attention to detail
Screaming at how perfect that is
Oh my god I love
Well now I need one. And a second Uni to put it on
oh my god yes
This is beaut!
could i request to be pinged tooo...
this is SO Pretty omg
omg…. I would grab a blue and pink shimashima or sebiretchi so fast
Haha :v
The options will be interchangeable/made to order
Not to derail but can you tell me about that dragon 🥲🥹
HAHA
I really appreciate the info thank you!!!! Also your tama is precious
Sorry for ping, but is this a crochet case or a fluffy case of some other sort (I had a jacket with a similar appearance as a kid, so)
Worst idea possible (meaning that I will hate the process): new faceplate idea of the two AEW guys who just completed the enemies to friends arc. Photoshopping that will be a pain
theoretically yes lol but my first mold of the front shell was a big ol flop 💀
the back one isn't perfect either so i'll be making a new one
but mostly just wanna see how the shell holds up for now
I’ll take the imperfect back lol
turns out theres another plastic piece behind the keychain hole which i found out when i was demolding the mold pour 😂 so mine doesn't have it rn
Wow that looks great for a first attempt! Especially with how it matches your faceplate
I like how the back doesn't have all the text on it
that is so genuinely incredible looking that for a second i thought it was a fresh-out-the box Uni
yea i was thinking, what did she do to strip the color from the back shell?? super cool
awe thank you guys! i can't wait to make even better ones soon 💜
in very excited to see what you come up with. an all clear uni?!
my dream is a translucent purple shell one day
🙏 would love to see it
This looks awesome omg!!! For the screen lens, how did you remove the tamagotchi logo? Does it leave anything behind?
i buffed it off with polywatch, it didn't leave anything behind but it took like 5 minutes to take it off lol
ooooh yessssss atomic purple
Doing this
@true zealot oh hey you did it!!
Lol the little magnetic charging puck looks absurdly huge on the tiny little tama
(compared to on a phone like it's supposed to go)
But guess where dust doesn't get into now ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
My tama logo did not come off
did you apply enough pressure?
it takes pressure and tiiiiime
same, i think you just gotta keep going, for the longest time it looked like the polywatch did nothing and then like 3-4 minutes in it finally started coming off
i also had to reapply it a few times
Weird. Ok. Do you think I should do it to the back as well?
naw, the logo is only on the front
I think it does look nice seeing the clean back you made, without the white text, though I imagine that would take ages to remove with polywatch.
I mean all the white text on the back
ahh! i agree with sg, it would probably take forever to get all of that off lol but it does look very clean without the text
Ok. I know how I’m spending my next hour lol
Does anyone know how to change the furniture by your right? I haven’t been able ti change the TV. Anytime I go into the furniture menu it only changes the left side
Oh. Press a
Case made ❤️
I was able to get the faceplate off once for a replacement but didn't smooth the edges well enough... and unfortunately, the faceplate absolutely refuses to budge now. I used suction cups prior. Masking tape didn't work either. Gonna try hot glue sometime this week.
It looks mostly fine in use, but just like when I accidentally open the camera on my phone, I occasionally catch a glimpse of my unfortunate reality when the screen darkens.
Here's to hoping it can be recovered!
I believe in you!
Select the item you want to place like normal, then press “A”. It’ll change sides and then u j press “B” like normal when you’re done. :) Also how did u get the teddy Neliatchti is holding? It’s so cute I need it
@gloomy hill ( I think I forgot to reply with ping so I want to make sure u see this :) )
Thank you so much! I found the teddy on Tama Fashion in the tamaverse! I check it to see if there’s anything cute I would like since the displays change daily
OMG this is so cute!!! I love the moogles
thank you! i'm sad about the bad edges but i'm hoping I can get those smoothed soon...
Have you tried my method?
It can't really be that simple...
I lack nails, but perhaps I can find someone with some....
Nails or maybe a guitar pick/pry tool, but yea there's no tabs in that part holding it in that area so it's easy to pull from there, at least for mine.
let's try a pick...
I saw someone with a tape (very efficient) and he pull up on the right
ohhhh they look so good
Wowwwwww Beautiful
gorgeous!!
Oooo the pink looks so cute
I am sad knowing I’ll never catch a drop haha they are so lovely
So sad I missed the lava lamp one 😭 I need a couple of the clear connection cases as well 🤦🏼♀️
Is this made from resin? 😍😍
I wish there was a mailing list or a warning about electronic day’s drops, other than having to check instagram
Yeah!!! I don’t use insta ever 😭
LET'S GOOOO
Husband and I don't wear wedding rings, we show our commitment to one another by exchanging buttons and back covers on our tamagotchis.
Omg were u able 2 make the screw caps with it?
I have a NEED for custom shell like that now...
yeah but i need to drill them out and i havent had time yet
Next question: will u b selling mold or finished backplates?
haven't thought about it yet, my molds need a lot of work still but possibly in the future
aaaaaa you have no idea how excited i got to randomly see your name pop up here
i just got a uni aswell and am getting into tamas in general, i especially love the customization part!! love the case, im gonna try it as well but im afraid it will be all wonky and wont fit properly too :D
Hello
Hahahaha wtfff it is you!! 😂 That's amazing, omg so excited for you to get into tamas, I love them so much. I don't always have time to run them lately but the love is always there :D I've been collecting for a good few years now! Also making cipt play them with me sometimes, he has a uni too! We have some catching up to do haha
HIIII CIPT
i remember you showing me the eevee tama a few years back and i really wanted one but i could only import them from japan and it was so expensive 😭 now here i am with a japanese on tama
Yeeah that is the only thing 😭 but they're a good investment! They do tend to keep their value or even go up after they're discontinued! Sad that you missed out on good prices on the previous releases :c but if you hunt around and try really hard you often still can get good prices!
I started customizing mine a little bit but had to find out that cutting out the button holes and the window are not the easiest with nail scissors
But I will try again with a cuter faceplate anyway :3
Oooh it looks great though, so cute! I haven't decided whether to or not to customise mine yet but people keep tempting me and I have a cricut 😂
I also sorta want to swap around the transparent pieces from the pink and purple for purple/blue and pink/pink combos haha
i thought the original faceplate looked horrendous 😭 why did they put the green in there with the pink
We have a baby now! And she chewed on cipts Tama and made the faceplate wet 😂 he left it in her reach while we were cooking haha
haven't had a look at that since it's dried out actually but it made him want to swap the faceplate out!
YEES ZWIZZIE TOLD ME ABOUT IT SHES SO CUTE
What method do you use to take it off?
congrats on having such a sweet baby!!!
Aaa thanks 😭😭😭❤️
it is absolutely wild to me that people i met ages ago in an online game have a kid now like sdgfuzd
i used some really sticky tape to rip it off
Ooo nice, he tried that but our tape wasn't sticky enough 😂
since i couldnt get the little screw hole fillers out
Damn this is a wholesome reunion
Wild to me that I've got a baby with someone I met even longer ago on an online game hahaha :D she's amazing though
Hahah sorry
were half on topic 😂
Yeah I've heard they can be a bugger :( on the smart, they started gluing them in!
Hahah yeah I use the yawn and blush and a couple others a lot actually 😂
stupid for them to glue them in :( but at least it doesnt seem tooooo hard to remove
wish they had more color options, i would have loved a blue
always used

i saw a glittery blue transperent shell here that i loved, would love to get a custom shell at some point
Ooft that'd be amazing
For the uni?
I guess it was a painted one, someone had a go at casting their own backplate though!
yes!
im sure that one was casted too because it was transparent :o
i saw a few white painted ones tho and i love the look of them too :3
Oo maybe it was glittery then I must've missed that!
People do some really amazing custom shells, I have this ID with a custom shell
Electronic days stuff?
oohhh pretty
#1127693337793659031 message
yes i think that one was from electronic days
WAIT I MISSED THAT
yes!
Wowww
I wanted that starry rerelease shell but I have so many of them

His stuff is really hard to get though he sells out so fast
😭 maybe i have to get into resin casting
I did it for a bit! I didn't do any complex molds or anything like that though but it's a lot of fun
I made some pierce plugs for the Ps (they have little hearts and DLC decoration things you can put on the top idk how well you know the older versions!) And made some faceplates for the 4u which is design to have changeable faceplates
Ooo like what?
Time to learn crochet to make little cases! :D 😂
wait ill show you, but not in this channel it would be way too off topic lol
yes luckily i know the basics already 👀 but i tend to make inconsistently sized loops so imm scared itll be all wonky looking
Yeah it can be really hard to get the tension right :( I tried to make a uni case but had the wrong size hook so I tried to crochet tight but it didn't exactly work out, it almost did but doesn't quite line up 😂 can't decide whether to keep it or not haha
@fallen thorn @fallen thorn @fallen thorn are you selling those faceplate templates (or are you maybe willing to share?
)
Gsfgdg did you @ me three times lol
I'm still getting the listing ready for some faceplates but when I'm done I do wanna share a version of the template I have set up (One that doesn't include all the artwork for the faceplate design, maybe just the border and a few other free patterns)
anyone have a tutorial on how to swap shells?
There's a pinned post that has video of teardown and putting it back together. I'm sure that would help!
Good to know :3 sorry for the 3 tags. Dunno what happend there lol
Discord got very excited maybe lol
i ded it 💙💙💙
Was going to go to Staples to get more of the paper I'm using to print faceplates on because we ran out after I was printing the sample copies for photos but Staples is closed. Will have to wait
I customized my uni... I was so afraid to do it bad but I've made it !
to the people that painted their shells, how did you deal with the speaker part at the top?
#1127693337793659031 message @/purpldevl explained how they removed theirs here! c:
tyyy hamham
Np! ❤️ It's the only explanation I can remember reading, hope you manage to figure it out!
i agree with the person after the explanation tho, that does sound very scary annd i might live with the pink part for now :D
Yeah it does sound quite fiddly :(
im very happy i managed to take it apart the normal way without breaking it already!
Made this cause I have an obsession with this movie 🤭💕
This Barbie is a Tamagotchi!
I love it. I almost did something Barbie themed since the shell is /so pink/
Do itttt!
There she is!
That was in the wrong channel lol
omg did anyone see this custom on reddit? (apologies if it's been posted here before and I just missed it!) https://www.reddit.com/r/tamagotchi/comments/15gqe8c/added_cherry_blossom_stickers_for_the_full_pink/
Same!
anyone know how to uh
remove the shell if you accidentally stripped the screws 💀
I haven’t dealt with this personally with the Uni yet but can you possibly use the rubber band method for the screws?
hmmm ill try but the holes are pretty small im not sure itll work
Yeah that’s my worry, like it looks really small and in an awkward position. Hope it somehow works!
I guess worst case scenario you could also take it to a jeweler or like a cell phone repair place and ask them if they could help? Not sure if they would deal with tamas tho 😅
I used a flathead and really fucking bearded down on it
If u watch belens video of taking the screws out and use their screwdriver technique
Dw I stripped mine too and I fr just got rid of the screws bc the back clips on
i also used a flathead and just pressed it in really hard! the screws seem to be pretty soft so it grips it kinda well if you push hard enough
for what its worth i've tried the rubber band thing on different size stripped screws soo many times and it never works for me lmao
best friends swap tama parts(if they want to)
Worst case with stuck screws you can superglue a screwdriver on the screw and get it out like that
They look so much better swapped 😭
If theyre completely stripped and no other process works, if you dont mind spending money you could try and take it to a jeweler to get it taken apart
i wanna change the faceplate on my uni and pix so bad but my printer is out of ink and its EXPENSIVE
OfficeMax/Depot will print for you for cheap, or even free if theyre nice and it's only one or two sheets and you go in and email them the document instead of using the online tool, the glossy tabloid paper they use is identical to the stock faceplate paper.
And they have VERY high DPI and color accurate printers, so the faceplates look professional af.
If you go with this option I just highly recommend either printing like a block if you’re using a repeating pattern or double checking to make sure the proportions are right! I remember that my faceplates for the Pix were slightly too big when I printed it like that and I had to improvise a bit.
I sent it as the A4 aligned PDF and it printed from their big printers perfectly, but they also tried their backroom printer while they waited for the email to come through and it was not sized right.
Ye, I try to do like a square with my pattern too now just incase so I can trace and cut the faceplate by hand if needed. To be fair though my faceplates usually are repeating patterns or designs that don’t need to be lined up perfectly
Finally done it!! I just lifted the top left with the small blade of my craft knife, then put a credit card in and popped the faceplate off .
I used my cricut to cut the faceplate
Its frustrating how there is always a tiny dust that manages to get in >-<
Yes its snatcher from a hat in time! I love him, he's my fav<3
Yeah connections were better in quality
You can try opening again, but if you says theres a crack it might make it worse
that’s so cute!!
before taking it apart again, i recommend trying the hose attachment to your vacuum and going along the edges of the tama
a can of compressed air is really good to have around when taking apart electronics
good luck! it worked perfectly for my smart, but the smart has a pretty significant hole in the faceplate (for the mic), so dust/crumbs can more easily get in and therefore come out
got my Uni from bestie, currently doing surgery to replace the faceplate
ooo did you use a spudger for the screw caps?
ended up using a sewing pin, nothing else got into it. I decided to keep them out afterwards as well, as they were a pain to remove and I don't want to do that again if I want to change the faceplate.
looks brilliant after all the work to get into it
these are the designs that I currently have for my tamagotchi uni
ohhhh i see, did it not damage the plastic?
Omg i love this for face plate storage, I'm going to steal this
It is an old card holder, I took out the pages and it is very useful to keep the faceplates firm. I recommend it 100%
I'm opening a card shop so I recognized it right away, I love it!
it got slightly scratched
Anyone got any 3d print files for the Uni or Smart (I presume the Smart is similar enough size?) that works as a desk stand. I need something to keep my Tama accessible while I'm streaming, it's just not comfy on my wrist. There's fuck all on Thingiverse and other sites for 3d print files.
I always find plenty of people selling 3D printed products for tamas but hardly ever see files shared for printing myself either
Good news: I changed my faceplate again
Bad news: I tried to wipe the glue stick residue off with a microfiber cloth and now my faceplate is noticeably scratched up
Has anyone had luck with polywatch? Tempted to buy some to fix my Uni and get a screen cover to prevent it from happening again
Also does anyone have screen protector recommendations?
There’s not a lot of things specifically for tamas unfortunately. You might have better luck finding something like a phone stand and using it for your tama
oh ok thanks for the suggestion
I feel like something like this could potentially work https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2646317
omg that's so cute, thank you
Plenty of people here have vouched for polywatch!
As for screen protectors, you can search up this channel, but I've seen people cut out squares from some semi-flexible phone screen protectors, for example
Should be very feasible!
Thank you! I really wish Bandai just gave us a better plastic screen to begin with but I guess I’m gonna have to just work with what I have! Gonna order polywatch and try to find a ok phone screen protector I can cut to size!
Yeah the whole transparent front faceplate is super scratchy.... Not just the part that covers the screen
You would think they would opt for a harder plastic considering you’re meant to wear the Uni 💀
Yeah and the silicone strap covers everything except for the faceplate, the jokes write themselves at this point lol
My only hope is that they give us a harder, scratch resistant plastic if they release more colors
omg I found an egg phone holder, hoping this will hold my Uni, it's like perfect
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2646333
Egg Cell Phone Stand
This is one of my Phone Animal cell phone stands. It works great to hold phones and tablets for hands-free viewing. Also a great easy 3D Printing project.
For this holder, there is not enough weight in the base for the phone to stand upright. The stand only works with the phone in landscape orientation.
idk how likely this is but does anyone know if theres anybody currently selling custom uni backplates yet? or is anyone planning to in the future? :3c
I'm designing some right now, I don't have a Cricut at the moment so I can't cut them out nicely but could sell them either in sets printed on nice paper or as individual digital downloads if people want to print them themselves. If there's enough interest in precut ones I can invest in a Cricut, I'm also looking into laminating them with holographic sparkles like the Sanrio Meets and purple anniversary Smart but it may be awhile before I get that process worked out and all the equipment and materials
holographic sparkles would be so cool
!!!
@alpine plaza color math!
Haha layer transparent colors on the pink. It provides a red shade when it's covered.
You could do a few light coats of yellow and it would come out as orange, I'm pretty sure.
does anyone have the images for any cute faceplates? im finally at school where i can use a good printer
i can only find templates
If you keep scrolling back in this channel you should find some
replaced my uni faceplate again
Hi! Just wondered if I missed these going up on etsy/ko-fi, or if you're still working on them? They're def still my favorite faceplates <3
That looks amazing! Are you the one on tumblr that made that custom character for the snatcher on the 4u?
yes !
its me ^^
You haven't missed it! I was waiting for a glossy paper refill to come it so I can start getting things up (Ran out in the middle of printing some more examples for listing photos). They just arrived the other day, so I'll be pinging people interested in a thread for it around Sunday or Monday!
Yay so excited! Thanks for the update!
