Have not played since the game first came out. Best way to get gear?

Was wondering what the best ways to get powerful and exotic items was? I see the weekly quest from the vendors that drop powerful and pinnacles but is there anything else I can do?

I remember farming exotics on heroic public events when the game first launched is that still a thing or is there an alternative to farm exotics in the open world?

and gotcha I've been playing for 2 days now and am 1780 so guess I'll need to just farm powerfuls so I can run legend lost sectors. Tried one with some friends and we got destroyed lol

damn yea I remember just running heroic public events in the edz for them when the game first came out. Felt like a ton dropped from them unless Im remembering incorrectly

to get exotics for legend lost sectors you need to do it solo

do the enemy's you fight during heroic public events have a chance to drop exotics? That might have been what I was getting them from. Like I said its been so long I cant remember.

And I didnt do the transfer from the battle net client so I lost that character with all my exotics lol

ahh okay me and some friends did the regular nightfall last night were still a bit weak for gms

apparently if you didnt transfer your character from the battle net client to steam in a certain amount of time its just lost?
