This is one of Bungies main ways of telling a story. Idk, I always liked it but it might not resonate with the current general gaming populace.
FF13 had a whack story, but a lot of fun lore was in the lore entries in the menu that had to be read. A lot of NA gamers didn't like this.
D1 and D2 had this sort of thing, and I liked reading them, it was a fun little insight to some of the past of the guardians and all that. I guess this isn't hitting like they wanted to?
Marathon does the same thing, and I love reading all those entries and getting more into the universe, but I have definitely heard people complain that they do not want to read this stuff.

WoW had a bunch of lore books hidden in dungeons that you could only read when you were there, with the book itself. I loved trying to read all of those and enjoying the story... but that was def not on a lot of player's radars.

Maybe what players want is for some of those stories to eventually translate into some event or thing to happen in actual gameplay or in cutscenes.
