basically you pick an ability you want to focus on i.e starfire. If you go with that, you'd want to maximize your grenade damage, so you would go to your ghost and select the grenadier mod to get armour with 30 in the grenade stat

the two stats listed on it will always be ther with additional stats in a 3rd random one. 90% of the time you'd want it to be in weapons
