I did the 100$ founder's pack, which didn't help me level as I used the crystals for cosmetics instead of leveling materials.

Solo Free to play can make it to 1400(where I am in item level, and where the hardest content is right now) without spending a dime or getting lucky on the auction house etc. The trick is to do your daily activities that level your character's gear every day, which collectively takes about 45 minutes to an hour. (2x Chaos Dungeons and 2x Guardian Raids daily). It should take you about 1 month to 2 months. If you are really unlucky, 3. Once you finally get to the latest content, you will have no problem keeping up n being ready for the next content update

On top of that, if you have any alt characters, you will level your main that much faster since you can funnel their resources into the main character

I did it solo until about 1385, then my first alt hit a level where it was able to contribute meaningfully.
