i was struggling against master cpus even on bounce basic, which the cpus are terrible at
but at the same time it makes the big skip on that track way easier so theres a small concession in your favor
the particle effects also dont account for this. the rockets from dead line will particle directly into your face
as will your follower. i will probably just do mega mushroom because mini iggy sounds like a nightmare to match up
on the 3d model end, im thinking like... simpler animaL animations would go crazy when you're just reposing your character instead of making 8 new sprites

i think it depends on how commited you are to the idea
i think as a player you will get more out of one racer than one follower
but followers are broadly much easier and therefore are nicer starting points
i think if you Might only do one, go for a racer, but if you're pretty confident you'll do both, do the follower for learning and then ramp up to the racer

im not sure where you're starting, so the first thing ill say is; get aseprite. there are many ways to get aseprite (or libresprite, i think?) at no cost to yourself. it is important and good

so naturally there are tutorials in kart krew in a channel called tutorials and guidelines. i didnt use them that much myself but i should point them out before i move on
so the big thing for me was mit's advice of prioritizing shapes over lines. when i was just starting i was trying to draw outlines of everything because i thought thats how drawing works
as someone without drawing experience, that's not the move. way too easy to get things like body parts weirdly changing sizes from angle to angle. you want to imagine your character as though they're polygonal
what's really nice is to have a reference. im sure theres a million bullet bill models you can find on models resource + theyre a simple shape anyways
so you want to start by creating blocks of color for each angle. i dont actually have the restraint to do this much, but its definitely really helpful for making sure you wont have to redo anything. essentially, just make the silhouette from every angle, and move between them to make sure it looks like it makes sense. Then start actually adding details

this feels awesome. massive help with shading. probably worth tinkering with the proportions, though - ive already tweaked it a little because the arms look really thin on the model, but id also like if i could make his expression a little more readable. he looks kind of upset right now because the cap brim hides the rounded top of his eyebrows

ring racers custom map chat is really fun today
someone finished a new track which is incredibly jank and just absolutely insane to play
and for the past 5 hours the chat has kept talking about whether or not the track is awful
it also prompted mods to add slowmode to the chat
the track, for the record
the gimmick is that on the third lap the speed gets multiplied like 3 times and if you fall off you pretty much just die. and CPUs are more difficult on average on this specific track too

me, having taken a break from RR to play trails in the sky, come to find that trails just gave me more characters i really wanted for RR
it does fortunately seem that i remember at least the broad strokes of how this works. working off a 3D model felt good at first but i feel like it limited profreshional's potential so im back to sprites first
also, this character (anelace elfead) who is a side character for 2/3 games, is somehow the Only trails character I could find on the kart krew discord (although thats for srb2k and im confident she looks different enough)
