Maybe he messes up half the city in the process and everyone looks down on him instead of seeing his heroics. He’ll keep bugging Luigi about it until they stumble across the Mushroom Kingdom somehow. Probably they’re just in the sewers and they come across a mysterious green pipe. They enter the wacky world of the Mushroom Kingdom, they hear somehow that the kingdom’s princess has been taken by an evil tribe of turtles known as the Koopa Troop. Mario, seeing the opportunity to prove himself, jumps at this chance to be a hero, dragging poor Luigi along with him, who’d rather be at home. Along the way, Mario totally messes up somehow and gets into that 3rd act main character sadness stage. Luigi gives him a pep talk and reassures him. He tells him something like how he’s always been a hero to him as his big bro or something. Mario gets more motivated and eventually does something that helps him get full confidence back, maybe he solves some big puzzle or something. They make it to Bowser’s castle, fight Bowser, save Peach, go back to her castle, everyone celebrates, Luigi twerking scene, the end.

The worst they’ve really done was make a movie really boring
