So I've been helping a friend out with their streams, and while you do need a modicum of decent gear, all I'll really say is that once you get to Blue Yeti mic tier and Logitech C270HD quality webcam, you're set to go.

Physical appearance matters, but more than that is personality. Have character, engage with chat as best you can without coming off as plastic or facetious. Be genuine, be well-rested, do something you really love doing. Don't do IRL streams just because that's the meta, but DO do them if you really like urban exploration and hanging out in fun places. Don't play trendy games if you don't like em, viewers will catch that lack of enthusiasm; even if you're halfway decent at faking it, that'll be a major tax on your sanity and peace of mind.

Make sure you treat your space so that you don't have extraneous noise creeping its way into your recordings, have set hours and be relatively consistent for the sake of algorithmic boosts. Marathon streams can be fun, they do turn out rewarding now and again, but again depends.

Not to say better equipment won't matter-- god forbid I last long watching someone with a sibilant voice chatting using an e835 or Podmic without compensating for the treble on each, but you get the point.

Maybe a green screen for effects. Assets for your stream like chat overlay and redeems would be nice to have. Lots of talented artists to tap for those who are willing to work for sensible prices.

OBS is a start, very versatile. I could ask aforementioned friend about workflow, I mainly helped with the gear bits; I do occassionally stream but it's really low effort scuffed ones to friends is all

Yeah I think you’re all set on the gear front with the audio, the C920 is more than good enough to start with. The software is the next step and it’s luckily free, and there are hundreds (if not thousands) of tutorials on it. I have one tutorial on the audio side which is here: https://youtu.be/FXphHY4AqAA?si=kr6yA6oBfpSfoDNH

In this short OBS tutorial, I walk you through why your microphone is distorting and how to fix it with three free plugins that are built into OBS. This will make your streams much more enjoyable to listen to.

For the video side of things, that’s out of my wheel house but there is plenty of coverage on youtube that will help you get that sorted.

Further questions for anyone who can help: Where would I go to get overlays (is that wat you call them?) for a stream? Also, what is the difference between OBS and Streamlabs?

you can get them from services like streamelements, or google, or even youtubers that make them like stream scheme or gael level. That being said overlays are not really important so dont spend to much time looking for it and remember to keep things simple imo. For obs vs streamlabs, the simple is obs is more flexable and get do everything streamlabs can do and more while streamlabs can be slightly more beginner friendly but honestly just use OBS and watch a couple vids to learn how

as long as you know the overlays and spending money to make them are more for you then to help you grow then follow your heart haha. I see a lot of people drop a lot of money on overlays or spend so much time on them to just stream to no one and get upset that they are not growing
