So I've been helping a friend out with their streams, and while you do need a modicum of decent gear, all I'll really say is that once you get to Blue Yeti mic tier and Logitech C270HD quality webcam, you're set to go.
Physical appearance matters, but more than that is personality. Have character, engage with chat as best you can without coming off as plastic or facetious. Be genuine, be well-rested, do something you really love doing. Don't do IRL streams just because that's the meta, but DO do them if you really like urban exploration and hanging out in fun places. Don't play trendy games if you don't like em, viewers will catch that lack of enthusiasm; even if you're halfway decent at faking it, that'll be a major tax on your sanity and peace of mind.
Make sure you treat your space so that you don't have extraneous noise creeping its way into your recordings, have set hours and be relatively consistent for the sake of algorithmic boosts. Marathon streams can be fun, they do turn out rewarding now and again, but again depends.
