#Godzilla: Minus One

Great movie with great contrasts between the quiet and loud moments. That little girl actor was so confused at the end of the movie though. I thought she did pretty well before that though.
‘GODZILLA MINUS ONE’ debuts with A on CinemaScore.

So in addition to 1954, I saw a lot of 2014 in this movie.
It was really fucking good
I saw a post on Reddit that her surviving was his karmic reward for choosing life over death. Which I think fits the themes here
Idk how they got all the ropes on the tugboats so fast
her "dying" kinda pissed me off im ngl
I had a feeling this was the scene you were talking about in the movie channel.
I wonder if the ending went through any drafts where she survives but he dies, or where he survives but she doesn't.
I liked the because I like happy endings, especially to movies that put their characters through the wringer this hard.
You know you have an evil Kaiju when Douglas McArthur isn't the biggest asshole in your movie about postwar Japan
The closest I came to crying is when he finds Noriko in the street during the first attack. They faked us out twice with her death flags before the third time finally got her (for a time)
Just got out, such a good film maybe my favorite of the year. I also watched it in 4DX and I was unprepared for how much it jerks you around, you really have to hold onto the armrests!
I was going to ask about that. This is a pretty intense movie.
The Ginza scenes in particular were wild, I got my head knocked back into the headrest a few times.
That sounds like I wouldn't enjoy it, but I'm glad it was fun!
On a scale of massage chair to Star Tours, where does it fall?
Very similar to Star Tours, maybe even a little rougher!
Oh I definitely wouldn't have liked that!
I'm a big fan of this piece (from the first boat scene). https://youtu.be/5rhNpZ7yKHY?si=R-4HBqHVJiKnHkAO

That scene by itself is an instant classic but what stands out for me is they do that classic trope of "the heroes are cornered, and then something arrives just out of frame to save them in the nick of time!" when the Takao shows up, but instead of it being this moment of relief the music gets even more dire, transitioning to this.
Oh, NOW the theater near me gets an IMAX screening
I would not be able to go to sleep in time for my 6am shift tomorrow if I got out of this movie for the first time at 8pm though
Couldnt see it in IMAX today but saw in RPX(nothing special about that lol)
But the movie, holy shit
100/10
It's one of those movies you have to take a walk after
Lol so true
What do you make of the ending?
I like it.
I don’t love that she survived but shes clearly infected with something
These types of Godzilla movies dont get sequels do they?
So like, technically this is one of only two Japanese movies that isn't a sequel to the 1954 one.
Toho expressed interest in making more Kaiju movies after they renewed the licensing agreement with Legendary in 2021, including other non-Godzilla ones (they haven't made a standalone Mothra flick in 30 years, as an example). I don't know if Minus One is connected to that or not
Is Shin Godzilla considered a sequel?
No. That's the other one
Shin was the first Toho Godzilla that wasn't connected to 1954 in at least some way.
(Because 1970s Godzillas are part of the same continuity as 1954 but tonally they are extremely different)
After this and Shin Godzilla, Whatever they want to make, a sequel to this or an entirely new story, im there day 1
I would understand if this was meant to be standalone, but I'd love to see them explore this setting more. I want to see Mothra Minus One
If Noriko actually has Heisei style "G-Cells" in her now (along with anyone who survived the Ginza attack) it would be cool to see Biollante again.
Yeah i really wanna explore these characters more specifically
At least the specific world
My only real objection to a direct sequel is that it would ruin some of the progression that Kōichi had to go from “my war is finally over” to “well Godzilla’s back, time to go to war again!”
Yeah i agree, but they also set up the infection thing so itd be weird if they did a sequel that didn’t have them in it
I would make the next one about their kids, for this reason
A message of gratitude from Godzilla Minus One Director, Writer, and VFX lead Takashi Yamazaki.
#GodzillaMinusOne is now playing in theatres! https://ow.ly/ZLGB50QgY22
IT WAS LESS THAN 15 MILLION?
How the actual hell did they do that
This looks better than 150 million dollar movies today
Probably a lot of crunch
Yamazaki was also the writer and VFX supervisor of the film, which meant he was probably helping with technical stuff along the way.
Consider as well that approximately $10 million dollars of, for example, Quantumania's budget went just to hiring Rudd and Lily. Japanese actors get paid a lot less, and I don't believe there are any particularly famous people here even in Japanese cinema.
Still very impressive though.
The wave simulations for the scenes in the water are 500 TB of data (half a million gigabytes). I wonder how much just that cost.
Lol i was wondering what godzilla looked like under the water. Like was he flapping his feet wildly to stay up or just kinda floating
Classic upright Godzilla's physiology is best not questioned, lol
Also best not to question: how deep is the water Godzilla is in at any given time?
That sounds like so much fun wtf
Star Tours Godzilla
I didn’t expect there to be Jaws in Godzilla
Or to cry as much as I did
I’m definitely going to have to keep it in mind when new movies come out, at the very least for stuff like Across the Spiderverse part 2
Interestingly enough, the creators of Godzilla vs Kong designed the sequences with that little flying bubble craft to resemble what they would want a Godzilla theme park ride to be like
With a movie talking so much about living for the future, her perma dying would have sucked imo
Plus there are people who miraculously survived the atomic bombs
It was his reward for choosing to live, while also being reminiscent of the lingering effects of the atomic bombs on Japan.
Also this movie makes me more angry about Godzilla vs King Kong lol
I hated that movie and the new one looks awful
I've been hearing positive things about the Monarch show so I do want to check it out, but Skull Island has been the only good Legendary film IMO
I think the Legendary ones are fine but compared to this its not even close
Out of curiosity, what other Kaiju movies have you seen?
That goes for anyone, really
I did a marathon of the Godzillas in college but I skipped a lot of the middle Showa stuff (anything with Minilla, basically)
I am of the firm belief no body = no death
Lowkey thinking about going to see this again tonight
I’ve been thinking about it for a little while
I’m def on team the death fakeout was stupid. It took me out of the movie for a while because if you’re gonna fridge her then at least don’t frame it as so easily preventable
The original Godzilla and King Kong films, most of the 90s Godzilla films, Shin Godzilla and the first 3 Legendary films.
The 90s ones aren't bad. I like the earlier ones more than the later ones
The enemy Kaiju design peaked then, especially Biollante and Destoroyah.
Yeah! Vs. Biollante is still a top 5 for me.
The Godzilla suit from that movie is good too. I think by Vs. Destroyah his face was a little bit too permanently pissed to express the emotions they wanted to
Past Shin now.
Is domestic the US there?
Yeah
In Japan it made less than half of what Shin did (and Shin makes up the vast majority of the international gross there)
It's still in theaters https://x.com/BORReport/status/1746206479617839586?s=20
Good
We never got rid of it it’s still one of our top performers
Every dollar gets us closer to an International disc release
