Lopezes: You could not live with your own failure, and where did that bring you? Back to us
So
The Lopezes could do it
Kat and I already had an entire discussion on why the fuck they didn’t use the Lopezes or LMM
I CANNOT IMAGINE
Lin was most likely tied up with TLM LA
and Lopezes were EA their own show on Hulu and doing music for that as well
Is what we discovered

We were committed to figuring out why the fuck
Julia Michaels ended up being the choice
Star being almost the younger version of the grandfather image wise would've been interesting take on the character.
The shift shaper option could've used so many Easter eggs and references.
Well that was very cute but felt more like a love letter to Disney animation than a new movie
Disney get not get it's wish with this movie lol
Definitely felt like they went "When you wish upon a star is a big part of our brand. How do we expand that core idea into a whole movie that pays homage to ourselves?"
I still believe it could have been a much better movie with better music
I agree but they wanted a big 100th anniversary film and put themselves in a corner. Still I think what they did is fine. Just could've been better.
I'm still mad they had the villain song be before he went evil
He made a good villain! First irredeemable one in a while
And they did the song before he went crazy
Interesting is I thought the song helped explain why he's changed 🤔
Just imo
It could have been better with an evil cat.
BIG MOOD
NEVER FORGET WHAT THEY TOOK FROM YOU
wish we got the magic star boy
I liked the star as is. Making it anthropomorphic or adding a love element would have been weird.
We don’t need another Bee Movie.
Protagonist ….
Literally bought the giant star plush before we even watched the film
I love my star son
I think it would be weird for Star to be a person
Since it’s supposed to be the star that all characters in disney movies wish on
But I would like romance
Just not with the star lol
They almost went peter pan if he was the main star of everything
The Disney wishing star has now been The Blue Fairy, Neverland, Evangeline, and now Star. Am I missing any?
Yeah i think part of what’s throwing me is Evangeline already covered this
Like we already had a wishing star plot beat
Also I am dying on this mid-rise hill of shapeshifting star being a good concept that could’ve been executed well
Obviously would’ve required a different structured plot, but it couldve been good
Look that humanoid concept art lives in my head rent free, it seems like it could have been adorable
And honestly if it shapeshifted? Would have still fit with the plot of everyone being stars, Star can change to look like ya too
If the reveal is “all humans are stardust” then you can have a star be like a human
It goes both ways
Not just humans, all living beings are made of stardust so shapeshifter totally makes sense
That would actually slap as a theme
With a romance I'm sure it would end up in the "character who can shapeshift ends up presenting in the opposite gender of their love interest so we get brownie points but it still reads as a heterosexual romance" thing, but like. I'm accepting that as the price of Cool Story
Carl Sagan
Okay I think I can say I’ve finally listened to This Wish enough to say it’s a bop and a half
Like I wanna run in a field singing it
obi you know what a really campy routine to this song would look like
and u know it is not what disney is serving
I am that young daughter
viewing things thru kids eyes is like a fucking drug i swear
it's half of why i stuck with cosplaying
you want to be a cynic and grinch but .... if you see a child react so purely, it's over
a post that took me out at the kneecaps
I sometimes forget about Once Upon a Time
Yeah the trick is to stop after 1
S2 introduces Hook which is good
And S4 is the Best Frozen Sequel
That’s it tho that’s all u need of OUAT
I really enjoyed once upon a time tho I think I forgot to keep watching before they introduced frozen to it
Currently watching that last season of OUAT
I'm just glad they delved into Brave in OUAT

I need it so bad 😭

The heads of DW had a lot of fun poking fun at Wish's performance the other day
I honestly expected Wish to do better than Trolls 3 but here we are.
They honestly should be a little more quiet though because they released Ruby Gilman this year
Wish still trips me out. Just everything about this film is surreal
I’m gonna buy that fucking sipper today if it kills me
The Valentino bucket is so fucking cute tooo
Anecdotal movie theater employee evidence: I have seen the numbers and the movie is fucking dead
Families know it'll be on Disney+ before they know it
Trolls 3 is beating the marvels by about 8k.
Domestically that is
Also something I never would've expected
I was gonna say “make good movies and this is what happens” but I cannot in good conscience call a Trolls movie good
I just call it a movie
I'm also not the key demo for it nor have I even seen Trolls 2. I only saw 3 because of a work screening.
I give the teams a lot of credit though because I know they put in an intense amount of work
It's more that production ran into some major issues on T3 that had them redo a lot of the work.
The company tried pushing new software that wasn't ready.
Make enjoyable movies
Yes but to me enjoyable = good
My contribution to the @DisneyAnimators White Elephant gift exchange this year.
Won by @jenhager1 (who won my gift last year 😊)
I love puppeteering
@reef briar I kept going "oh i like the colors in this shot!"
the only actually compelling moment was the twist reveal that "magnifico" in the forest was simon
but the whole idea of simon being listless and depressed without his wish doesn't really work? because none of the other adults are impacted that way?
yeah they went by Inside Out type logic of "don't think about it too hard or actually at all unless you want it to fall apart"
i know it's been discussed
The colors and visual language I thought worked really well. I wasn't sold on the look but now I rather like it for the most part excluding a couple things.
but asha flipping her shit about "you don't even grant most wishes??"
when the wish ceremony is a monthly thing
and then they double down on that type logic in inside out 2 but thats a conversation for two months from now
like baby girl are you not able to math
Oh hey guys. What's up?
I think for a first pass at this style I like it a lot -- i wish they hadn't made this THEE film of the year but i like the aesthetic
a lot of my beef with the animation was more individual choices - how anime magnifico looked at moments, and that shot of asha going "does my face look funny" or whatever are good examples where they just kinda went off the rails
but the overall visual effect is quite nice
literally the whole point of the grandpa's song was to resolve his arc. he got his wish to compose a song to unite the people! and then in the finale the song unites the people!
... wait that used to be in the film?
and in the final movie if you leave before the credits are over that arc just gets. dropped.
that was his song?
bc as is they just all rise together for no reason
i think
i was drinking when i watched it
the song that plays over the beginning of the credits was originally sung by the grandpa
theres a version of it online now as a deleted scene
it was his whole arc!
but y'know "i was drinking so i might have missed some connection" is what i said about frozen 2 and then i rewatched it and nope there was no connection
but they just changed it to vague terms in the final movie
they just
got rid of his arc
he gets his wish back and it means nothing
unless you stay all the way to the very end and then its a cheap nostalgia easter egg
Hotdog fingers. HOT DOG FINGERS!!!
i guess final saba just tried and failed and died
I DONT LOVE IT BUT LISTEN, THERE'S COLOR AND STYLE
Listen, I have literally been dealing with this problem the past 2 months at my job. There are ways to do this and there are ways to not and that is the NOT way. For the style they literally just need some accent marks on the underside of the fingers. That's it. That would remove the hotdog fingers look. Maybe some shape variation but that's less important.
no but literally it makes him have a point
I'm not arguing it's good just like
I can work past the hotdog fingers if i must
like if you see the movie and you turn your brain off you dont think anything of it but like
i saw the movie with the minor subplot and without the minor subplot and let me tell you
they shaved off like five minutes total for nothing
just for the sake of shaving it off
Me af
sorry i wanted to see what tumblr was up to and this is killing me
I just hate the hotdog fingers because it's such an easy fix. I also think the folliage is overly detailed for the design of the film.
i was running on very little sleep and also multiple drinks and still my brain was not quiet enough
they said grandpa had too much to do
we gotta make him like the other 10 side characters and give him nothing to do
like he was the most interesting side character
it is imperative that the grandpa have equal personality and plot to the Seven Dwarves
also omg the opening job interview
like
why not just open with her already being the apprentice?
also the final movie completely cuts like all mention of asha's father iirc
The 7 dwarves were made to be disneybouded and that’s never going to happen
literally her whole backstory was 1. her grandpa's wish 2. her father and both of them GONE
bc right now she's just like "OMG YOU GOTTA GRAND PEEPAW'S WISH" and magnifico is rightly like "that's a really weird thing to lead with"
also she and 7 dwarf rip offs dont feel like friends
the speed with with asha is like "i need you, person with security clearance, to give me access to the king's study without EVER explaining why adequately" is insulting
i thought her friendship with Guillermo was really authentic when he was an asshole to them for the entire movie until suddenly he is on board mid-musical number
the switch just flips
there are some mentions but it's funny you bring it up because i literally was like "i've never wanted a flashback to the MC's childhood with her dad before but this film is making me understand where those flashbacks fit"
I was completely on Magnifico's side in that scene. You just got this job and you're already asking for an advance on your paycheck. What the hell Asha?
what great character writing
yeah that was there. they cut that.
what a great cohesive film
it is far more imperative we dedicate time to dancing chickens than Character Development or Backstory or all those silly little things
she fucks up the interview immediately, and he's very patient the way one is when interviewing a teenager for an internship, and then she asks the top dude in the country for a personal favor and he's like "uh, no"
"you're a stranger and that's weird"
and then she's offended?
she also vaguely cares about the wishes in general but mostly seems to only care about her mother & grandfather's wishes
which is not a greatly compelling trait for a protagonist!
I don't know what you guys are complaining about. The movie has two cute animal-like creatures, one of whom also has nothing but tee hee lines no matter the situation they're in. That's Disney firing on all cylinders.
I enjoyed the chickens in the same way I enjoyed Olaf's recap in Frozen 2
the rest of the story was such a mess I was delighted to have something to latch onto
i think this is why they did not cut the chicken dance. audiences reacted similarly
It's the same thing with olaf, and the problem is they thought "audience remembers it fondly = good" and then turned that into "Add more of it"
THE CHICKEN DANCE WAS PEAK
and it's like mmmm maybe think about why they liked it
since your job is structuring the film
anytime Valentino was on screen I was LOCKED IN
i remember not bubbling in the chicken dance on "which songs do you enjoy" on the survey
Valentino was also a light in the darkness
the top of most songs was like
- music starts
- i groan and go "oh i forgot this existed"
- radio hit plays
- radio hit ends
- we return to the plot
valentino is the filmmakers watching harley quinn and going "i like the clayface voice. let's get him to do the clayface voice in our movie" and then thats the only idea they had
now dont get me wrong i love me some alan tudyk
the goat has no personality beyond the fact that he is alan tudyk
that is the whole joke
hee hee tu-dyk
I liked that he was like 9 fucking days old or whatever
there is no clearly definable character
3 weeks i think
he just says things and you laugh because he's alan tudyk
yeah it's again
the Olaf Problem ™️
you cannot just rely on charismatic talented actors to salvage this
this is the most i've thought about this movie in four months
no i'm loving it
the fact they just hand amaya the crown in the end is also wild
like hi. what. what is her deal.
i like how both of disney's major november 2023 tentpoles had flashes of being really cool but they said "yknow what we dont need to make a good one this time. just cut things out for shits and giggles" and then both those movies made $2.83 and a half eaten canes combo at the box office
Never too old to be a nepo baby
her single verse in the song i've totally forgotten bc it was forgettable was the highlight of the film to me
i think my brain is forcibly replacing it with "Ready as i'll ever be" from the tangled series
bc that had the same vibe but much stronger
also their SECOND SONG was the reworked love song??
the no-longer-a-love-song love song?
it just happened randomly
"oh i never show the wishes to anyone"
"oh"
"would you like to see the wishes"
I love when they sing to the balls
i literally paused to ask my roommate if it felt like the king and queen were auditioning interns for a threesome
the balls song is nice because i like how debose's and pine's voices sound together
Unfortunately: Julia Michaels
the autotune is not even that bad it's fine
but it's COMPLETELY misplaced in the film
also lmao amaya being like "babe...don't be evil <33"
and he's like "okay baby i wont <3333"
and then like half a hardship later he's like. sike. i'm turbo evil.
it speaks to the male experience. we simply all keep a mystical item that makes you evil at the ready, just in case.
ohhhh
see i'm just a silly woman i wouldn't know
bellamy <333 babe <333 don't be evil plz <3333
i was gonna say "see also" but thats kind of the whole thing with the water of life that men are not supposed to drink it
This is real
until the man drinks it and then Holy War ❤️
i
am assuming from tumblr osmosis that this is a dune joke
yes this is a dune joke
damn the tumblr experience has saved me yet again
YES
better example
also lmao
sorry this is just me processing the film
when mom gets her wish crushed and she's like "aww dang i'm sad :("
but then she's fine
like by the end she's fine
no harm done
and you could EASILY have a scene of asha (grown and wiser now) telling her mom the beauty is she can find a new wish
but that would imply that the wishes arent' immutable which
i'm not really one for the fixed vs growth mindset but jfc
can i also nominate the witch skin hat from what we do in the shadows as the "the male experience of the evil object that calls to you to make you evil". even though it doesnt technically make you evil it causes bad things to happen to those around you.
everyone knows exactly what they want to do with their life at the age 18
this is why nobody drops out of college
the roommate and i were like "hold up they're 18?" "oh god what if i got my dearest wish from when i was 18 granted" "oh no" "oh NO"
we should have had a scene where there's a wish granting ceremony and they call a guy up like "oh you've been waiting for SO LONG for this one!! it's your special day!!" and then the wish was just for a ham sandwich
dkjfhgkjdfgh
again the closest thing we got to interesting playing with it was that simon's wish was so easily corrupted
that happened in something i swear i am racking my brain to figure it out
so like, can magnifico do that? grant wishes but in ways that corrupt the intent?
because that is interesting
but considering he only picked simon because simon turned them in, it's not even like he hand-picked simon because simon had a useful wish
wait no. i remember now.
which would've been REALLY interesting to me
it was the phineas and ferb wizard of oz episode
THATS why my brain went to ham sandwich
like simon didn't turn them in and magnifico grants his wish in private bc he knows that a knight would be useful
that would require something interesting to happen in wish
this is the 100th anniversary. we can't make decisions like that
and it would undermine his magnanimous appearance because how many other people has he done this for, in private?
as a trade?
god for-fucking-bid something have happened
he cant be evil until he reads The Book That Makes You Evil
i am going to rewatch this film with my friends to try and get a better handle on it but it's just ....
deep sigh
even though we have a real classic disney villain this time
oh god no
dont tell me that was their thinking
"lets name him magnifico. it's close enough to malificent. they start with ma"
big moves being made at disney
I think it says a lot about the discourse of this film that I am like "oh yeah I should watch that" about this film still a week after its been on D+
Booooo!
This is so bad
I have secondhand embarrassment
Like it’s so insulting to my intelligence
Who is this movie for
Me
People looking for queer power couples that they can look up to.
0 stars ⭐️
Did you not watch the film? There is 1 star in it
Ok rewatching now and actually paying attention this time out of morbid curiosity. Wow, Asha is insufferable and Magnifico is so patient and understanding during the job interview that his villain turn makes even less sense now.
Also, the songs are bland af
Mhm
The villain turn was insane tbh. Even if he was lying about wanting to protect people’s wishes earlier, he clearly WAS protecting wishes, so an abrupt switch to evil magic + crushing wishes was baffling
I’m willing to buy he didn’t have altruistic motives for keeping everyone‘s wishes “safe”, but there’s quite a jump between “doing it for nefarious reasons” and “fuck these wishes and fuck these people”
I still love that he kept the evil book just right there, like an alcoholic keeping a decanter of brandy, and apparently just decided today was the day to turn completely evil, oops
Also what WAS his tragic backstory? They allude to him having suffered something that made him value wishes, but they don’t specify.
And it’s not like he’s lying, because “they” here is the opening narration. It’s all we have to go on, it has to be true or the whole film goes up in smoke
Meanwhile Asha just. Is seventeen and doesn’t have a wish? Girlie what do YOU want. Before she decides her greatest wish is to free all the other wishes for some reason. Is it to be the apprentice?
I’ll never know because she didn’t have an “I want” song before the inciting incident so I have no idea who she is
Ariel wants to be where the people are/be understood, Belle wants adventure in the great wide somewhere, Quasimodo wants one day out there, Moana wants to chase the horizon, Tiana wants to get her restaurant and see her fathers dream through … this is what bonds is to the character because we want to see them get it
And the story is about how they get it
his kingdom burned down
i only know this because it was not in the original cut i saw lmao
Bruh was that in the final script
Maybe I forgot due to all the bulllshit after lol
How does kingdom burned down => wishes
I feel like there’s something in the final version
Like you see it briefly
@wind zenith correct me if I’m wrong
Because you mentioned it when we were talking about the film afterward
But I think there was a quick shot of him with the wreckage
Maybe it just didn’t register because I didn’t really connect it to anything else
How you wished it was used more as a driving factor
The one thing that I took from this movie is my love for the Star
That has not wavered
I like the Star in concept, the art is great, but my god I kept waiting for it to have a defined personality besides cute
But they did knock it out of the park design wise
I have my giant squishmallow like plush, I got some cute jewelry last trip
It makes SUCH good plushes
And some hella comfy jammies
I have refrained from the shoulder plush only because I can’t really do a shoulder plush and a loungefly at the same time
I only just started doing the nuimo thing with the munks on my straps

I will say I had like a half dozen people ask me where I got chip and dale nuimos because they’re not sold in the parks anymore hahah
Get someone to carry things for you
I thought my love for Star would be unwavering
But the movie was so bad it made me love him less
Even if it was a smidge less that says a lot
Also like
Am I misunderstanding something about the wishes
Like, obviously the citizens know that they will forget their wish once they wish it. And they obviously know that you are lucky if you get your wish granted, and it might not ever be granted. Why is Asha’s grandpa like, surprised when Asha says his wish will probably never be granted??? If it’s really your dream in life and your deepest desire, maybe just don’t wish for it?? And pursue it yourself???? Just wish for something that would be sorta cool to have like sewing pretty dresses?
I feel like it would make a lot more sense if like, The Magic™️ could sense your deepest desire in life
Also like, isn’t writing inspiring music just a wish that would be Sorta Cool
Like is it really that serious
Was he ever a musician before he made his wish
Is there no music allowed in the kingdom or does he lose his ability to play after wishing
Music must be allowed with how much singing they all do
He loses his drive, I think. Without that wish motivating him he stops pursuing music, if he was pursuing it.
The kicker for me is that that I’ve seen the wish ceremonies called “monthly”, and at least, they’re not every day. So buddy. The math ain’t mathing.
Like at the ceremony we see, two people give their wish to him! So!
The math ain’t mathing!!
Even if the math made sense, it’s like — you have to know more than a handful of people, so you can anecdotally figure out that most of them don’t get their wishes granted.
I think that’s soooorrrta implied, like he says to focus on your deepest desire, but I assume there’s some element of the magic reaching for a true Wish instead of just something stupid
But then again who knows, most of the ones we see (because it’s an animated film) are quick, visual, shallow wishes like “I want to be a ballerina”
Which, sure, if someone offered to wave a wand and grant me a wish however physically implausible, I’d probably wish for ballet or a good singing voice or smth too
But that contrasts with ashas “your wish is the most beautiful part of you” rant
Yeah and when that lady gets her Magic Scissors all of Asha’s friends act like that wish was stupid and her grandfather’s is worth more
Which like he’s already 100 or whatever
How much time does he really have left
Literally not to seem cynical but he’s 100
At what point were you gonna give up hope
Literally
Also my god apparently Magnifico’s kingdom has excellent healthcare
If someone offered me a luxury socialist paradise at the low cost of my deepest held wish^, I’d take it
(^that I had at 18, which doesn’t even have to be the deepest one)
Maybe that’s because I’m cynical
I like the overall message of “wishes should be worked for, not granted” but that moral doesn’t shine thru because
- Genuinely some wishes probably shouldn’t be granted
- The issue isn’t wishes being granted, it’s the way Magnifico is doing it and the fact he abruptly goes power crazy for no reason
- Asha becomes a fairy godmother anyway
So whatever message they’re trying to send is muddled
The writing of this film is also just bonkers, there are so many small tweaks that I think would have fixed so much. Like we should start with Asha as Magnifico’s apprentice to give us a stake in the relationship, and over the months as his apprentice she has formed the desire to grant more wishes, as all the ones she’s seen are beautiful. When Magnifico finally gives her the Big Reveal that he has all the wishes he deems harmful locked away, Asha is skeptical but believes it’s for the best — until she sees saba’s wish to sing and inspire people. Then, her trust in Magnifico shaken, they argue, she is fired, she takes what little knowledge she has and fervently wishes to the stars for help freeing the wishes so people can pursue them.
It’s not fun watching Asha stumble around trying to figure things out, so it’s okay if she comes in with some prior knowledge! You could have some easy exposition dialogue at the top while she’s learning from Magnifico, which would skip over the thing where he just seems weirdly open and honest with this stranger he just met in the film.
But I’d be more willing to buy her just psychically understanding this star if it was handwaved as she’s been studying magic but she’s not very good at it yet. But she knows some stuff.
And that would set up the fairy godmother thing
Well. “Set up”.
The other thing about the interview that got me is when she’s like “oh it’s my saba’s wish”, that isn’t when Magnifico throws her out! He is quite reasonable about saying it’s a lovely wish but not one he can grant as it’s too vague.
He takes an honest look and explains his logic, which isn’t entirely flawed, and Asha immediately flips out and jumps to the conclusion he’s a monster hoarding the wishes instead of being like “hey your logic sucks”
It just undermined the whole enmity to me because he at least met her halfway, and doesn’t go full villain until Asha has made up her mind he’s Wrong.
I’m just … scream. It’s a good thing for villains to have sorta logical points to be refuted but then you can’t just go “no he’s wrong xoxo” and have him go inexplicably crazy to cover for it
The most teen thing they could have done
The only way it can reconcile for me in my head is if he’s a cryptofascist who seems kind and benevolent when he’s in complete control but will flip the fuck out the moment his power is challenged.
But then he’d have a history of underhanded and self serving acts behind him that would have to be part of the story.
“Control freak in power absolutely loses it” is a fair arc but yeah, I’d need to see at least a little indication he had that in him
This was more confusing than the Hans twist because there was nothing stopping Magnifico from going crazy before, other than his wife going “baby plz don’t”
Well he never had a job applicant ask for a favor on their first day before, so…
That was my favorite moment ngl
Just him going “wow, okay, interns usually wait a couple months before asking me for personal favors, but ok”
And again, he LOOKED at the wish! He framed it as, at least, a teaching moment
He wasn’t even THAT offended
Exactly. He’s so understanding and patient in that moment. The turn makes no sense. It would’ve made more sense if he clumsily tripped and fell onto the evil magic picture frame (that he keeps in easy reach for some unexplained reason) and have that be his villain origin.
Y’know I could vibe with it
Or he tries to grant his own wish to “protect the wishes” or something idk
And that creates a feedback loop
Also it’s been talked to death but evil Amaya would be
isnt this movie terrible?
that is what I heard
I wish they made more stuff like the classics such as steamboat willie instead of this stuff
It's not terrible. It just doesn't live up to what WDAS can do.
It was pretty bad
But not worse than a lot of kids films
But Disney Can and should do better
I’d say watch it yourself and form your own opinion on the movie
Some of the songs got stuck in my head but it kinda felt like a divine punishment more than anything, is my review
We hooted and hollered when Amaya sang tho, wish she sang more
The animation had an idea
Well Coco is Pixar so I wouldn't necessarily compare them.
