#COTL Optimization Improvements (please)

COTL especially on the highest graphics is kinda bad in terms of performance and WILL cook any kind of PC below what I have
For reference, I have a decent PC and Ive also done some testing not only with COTL on its highest graphics but also some other games on its highest graphics
Here is the full build of my PC btw:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM CPU Cooler
MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory
Asus TUF GAMING OC GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER 16 GB Video Card
NZXT H7 Flow (2022) ATX Mid Tower Case
SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Platinum 750 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

And here is my testing:
Risk of Rain 2 averages about 120F in terms of what my CPU core reads and under load (high/fast gameplay along with streaming over discord) makes it hit barely 130F

COTL however, practically cooks my PC at a 149F REGULARLY, under load (gameplay along with streaming over discord) pratically COOKS my beast of a computer by making it jump up to 158F

For those who are unaware, a PC idling(nothing open or running) should be around 30C or 40C (86F-104F) and a PC under load should AT THE MOST
The considered "Safe Heat Range" for any pc is 40C to 65C (104F-149F)
A PC under load usually should get around 70C to 80C (158F-176F) and the maximum heat range before your CPU starts cooking itself is ~190F

I feel as if I don't have to explain why these heat ranges on COTL are a problem for anyone who doesn't have a Beast PC.
For me with a decent pc on the highest graphics, Risk of Rain 2, a notoriously high energy game, runs 2x better on my PC than COTL can when idling.
And while the obvious solution is "just lower the graphics 5head" is honestly the most dense solution you can give anyone. I built my own pc myself and while its nowhere near a $5000 beast build it certainly still is good for its price range. I built my own pc just so i can run some games i physically couldn't on my previous crappy laptop and so i can run games on the highest graphics.

TLDR: If COTL cooks my decent build pc, i don't even want to think what other players who aren't as fortunate have to suffer through (I was once one of those players)

Making optimizations for a game though, especially without reprogramming some stuff is hard though. I don't know how to do game optimizations but I do feel like its hard to cut more corners on the corners you've already cut. One thing id like to suggest is allowing the player to enter in the frame rate they want, rather than making it so you only have the chance between 30, 60 or infinity,.... or i should say the choice between whether or not you want to use your laptop to fry an egg while you play COTL.
I have some more suggestions but those are more gameplay focused optimization focused.

Ill do some more testing with some other games but I wanna test risk of rain 2 again to see if my heat ranges are actually correct. I will update this thread of my findings

i play on a rtx 4060 laptop with a i5 13th gen and i average 90fps with around 30 followers on screen
temps are in the 70's too so normal stuff :p

#

the gpu is just sitting there idle relative to the cpu so it seems more cpu heavy

tough pumice
#

im guessing you also run ultra graphics?

yep cranked up

ahhh okay

#

70c or 70F

ohh okay thats fair

#

i agree though if some of the graphics of COTL could be moved over to the GPU so its not straining the CPU then it will be a lot better

I need this so badly, i can run a low poly game (bomb rush cyberfunk) with mods on my laptop but i can’t run cult of the lamb at all, it runs at like 2 or 3 frames per second LambertMisery

I really don’t have the cash to buy a decent pc as of now and for probably years to come too, pcs are hella expensive in my region (canada and the taxes are 15% in my region LambertMisery )

#

A mario game in USD is like 60$ but for me it’s 80$, 91$ ish if you include taxes

#

So imagine how expensive a 600$ USD laptop is converted into CAD currency on top of 15% of tax rate

#

oh yeah

#

i feel bad for anyone else in another country trying to buy games or pc stuff

#

literally half of your months rent

tough pumice
#

if so then yeah, exactly what im trying to convey

#

unplayable for people with potato pcs

#

even though other games work just fine

# tough pumice even when using the lowest settings?

Unfortunately yes but strangely modding the game made it run decently enough and i have no idea why, cause the first few times i tried playing it (nit modded) i had a fresh save and it refused to run any higher than 10 fps so i kinda gave up until i tried a couple of mods on it that optimizes the game

#

Used thunderstore for mods

tough pumice
#

Is there more thunderstore mods?

#

I havent seen any optimization ones unless im blind

brittle zephyr
#

There’s a couple yeah, though uncertain of the optimization ones honestly

#

I know i definitely have a skip splash screen when loading the game

#

I feel as if thats more for QOL than anything

#

But ill try it if it means not my CPU will not scream at me

fps check with 21 followers on screen

#

it varies from 80-90
also look at cpu usage and frequency :p

I’m pretty sure that dead followers also reduce performance. My cults always get laggier over time, even at the same follower number.

tough pumice
#

I have a lot of dead followers even though I have composted them

Yeah it’s ridiculous how I can play red dead redemption 2 on ultra everything with raytracing on and advanced sky box at 60fps, cyberpunk 2077 on everything ultra with raytracing on, dead island 2 on ultra everything — all at 60fps,

But I need low graphics on cult of the lamb with a 30fps cap, or my leg gets burned. That’s why I just play it on the steam deck. The smaller screen makes it harder to tell the quality is low.

I'm sure this team will keep trying to boost performance where they can though

its a cpu bottleneck
