||Baal took his brother's hand and squeezed it tight. Aym was still crying silently with endless streams of tears running past his nose. Despite all the kind treatment they had recieved in the Bishop's care over the past three days, the only thing that could ever bring out Aym's smile was their mother.
Even though his heart ached just as much, Baal had promised their mama to look after Aym and he would not betray her. He tugged his little brother's arm lightly but pointedly, in an attempt to demonstrate the strength they both needed to hold in this most critical moment.
They wore pure white smocks and crowns of fresh camelia flowers. As they knelt on the bloodstained floor of the ruined temple, Aym trembled and Baal shivered. Their perfect gowns soaked up the blood of lesser sacrifices already given in their names, for they were to join the One Who Waits and were to be venerated in His name.
Up until that moment Baal had been existing in a dream; since saying goodbye to their mother he had obediently followed every word and did not fuss, even when they were bathed in holy water and sanctified with rare perfumes... caressed with many hundreds of hands as they were carried in a litter made of the finest spider silk, bourn through the lands of the Bishop Shamura, amidst the weeping of the most faithful...
...up until that moment he had held his brother's hand and whispered admonitions of dissapointment in his display of weakness: this was the most wonderful blessing bestowed upon them and Aym needed to show his gratitude.
Surrounding them was the largest crowd of worshippers he had ever seen at any one time. They were all chanting with their hands raised and eyes shut. Some had tears, others had blood splattered upon their robes and faces as they had already witnessed the first of their Bishop's gifts being sent Below.
Up until then Baal had held back his fear.
Aym's eyes fixed on his suddenly and the brothers shared their realisation that this was their final moment.
Baal wrapped his arms around little Aym and they both held together tightly, as sobbing into each other felt less terrifying than drowning in that song.
Words were spoken aloud over the gathered mass and then the carved stone pressing hard against their knees fell away. The world lit up in a bright white light, separating them from that ghastly scene.
They expected to fall but instead they felt like they floated. Still holding on tightly to each other, they lifted their heads and opened their eyes to see that the light had changed to red and the blood that they had knelt in was swirling around them corrupting into black.
They felt it sticking in their fur as it crept fast around their bodies and tightened around their necks. Aym choked out Baal's name as his hands desperately clawed out for him and was pulled away: suspended in the air before him.
The darkest shadows smothered Aym's eyes and mouth and dragged him Below screaming, just as Baal too felt the same crushing darkness take his life.
He did not cry.
He promised he would not cry.||

in the meanwhile, here’s a few silly and weirdly specific headcanons that i wrote on my phones notes

Baal tends to be more extroverted and welcoming to anyone new they meet while Aym prefers to be more introverted and be in the peace that is the sound of silence

When they were just small little kits, Narinder would have to hold them by the nape (the back of a cats neck) and separate them if they started to have a sibling brawl, or if Narinder was busy doing something while picking one of them up

Baal is incredibly proud of his brother, and looks up to him regularly, while Aym is slightly jealous that Baal doesn’t feel so awkward when he talks to people in general

These kits be loyal, even when they go with forneus, they still send a few letters to narinder talking about all the things they did that day
