it just looked like the normal area that it takes you when you die but it does not pop up the option to go back to your cult or scarifies someone to come back to life

In this case the only thing you can do is sacrificing one of your followers, you can't come back to home in general.
Anyway this is a know bug and the developers are working on fixing it ✨

When you spoke about your issue you said 'it will not let me go back to my cult' along with the sacrificing followers thing, so I wanted to tell you that when you die and can exchange a follower for another chance, you won't have that option, all you can do in order to move forward is sacrificing a follower.
