events like gold fever, growth spurt awards you gems for completing milestones, or even getting in certain positions.. if you level up too fast, the milestones become harder to achieve, thus increasing the difficulty of you getting the gems

that's fine, mythic habitats increases your growth in the game, but if you level up by tearing through adventure map, it's not the best idea.. even so, try not to level up too quickly until you have a decent source of food, and gold (and by this, I mean, from habitats, and farms instead of getting them from the adv map; adv map is by no means a "decent" way to gain food, or gold)
