because using the smaller ones is much easier when u want to rank up relics. u can use golds and diamonds that are bad for crafting but its harder to use them the other way usually

rank them up when the level matters for monsters u need. it depends on the relics themselves, the reason and monsters ur using them on, the amount of gold u could spare to remove them and the amount of times u need to remove them, the amount of food u can spare for ranking them too

if u rank it up and stop somewhere between the middle and end, it will cost more gold to remove but like a fifth or a fourth of the food total
