They can awaken when going through certain things in battle, for example, Jestin has to receive 5 damage boosts, or Khalorc needs to get 7 tortures, they’re awakening forms come with “virtues” which are like extra traits that stack on top of the ones they already have, they do also have ultimate moves, but it’s usually best to keep them awakened for the battle, another thing to say is that most ancestors are best at rank 5 and can be tougher to use at lower ranks, unless you’re a beginner
