They do that with temporal anti-aliasing though, which requires at least 1440p and at least 60fps to work well.
Older games could just use a well-tuned FXAA and get the same edge smoothing at lower res and FPS.

Yes, becasue there are ways to do all AA techniques poorly. Certain FXAA presets (that devs usually don't use over the default) has a few % more performance hit while looking like a 2x SSAA.
TAA (and DLSS/FSR) have inherent issues due to starting with lower resolution images. But it's used becasue that's frankly the biggest performance increase you can get these days with high res textures, high poly models, and dynamic lighting straining GPUs.

Same way you can override the DLSS preset in the NVIDIA app to preset K, you can override the resolution scale to 75% @atomic coral

It took another 6 months for the 5070 Ti I would have otherwise bought to get down to $750. But either was a huge upgrade over a 2080 TI (and my friend got a 9070 XT too and he had a 3060 Ti)
