I guess so...didn't realize it'd basically be an entire channel of threads
That could be very helpful though if curated into categories
threads without a time limit, presumably
I think there is a time limit that can be set
I think normal discord threads vanish after a week of inactivity
right now the default is 24 hours before the thread is archived
FAQ - <Insert class here >
I can set it up to 1 week before archival
I'm not sure what that means though, if it gets deleted or if it just gets locked and shuffled into some other spot
how's the weather
if it's permanent, I could create a section with links to stuff like aosetups, ao-universe, aoitems, clicksaver, maps etc
Discord has in many cases reduced forum traffic globally by drastic amounts, but lacks the familiar Stickys FAQ's sections good old forum have
discord sucks
discord is really good for some things but less good for searching questions and answers
since it has no SEO
I only use IRC with my Macintosh 2
you can't google search topics in discord
god bless 2004 AO forums solving deep mysteries for me
aofroobs.com โค๏ธ
or perhaps opening other mysteries like the drop rate of items like sword of galahad
Discord has been game-changing for those wanting taylored answers to questions for helpful individuals, it's like it's a library and use old-schoolers are the librarians helping people with questions
oh look you get an OP tag
How do it. and we go find a link/guide etc and give them some extra information
as long as those questions aren't too difficult
I've tried using tech support discords and they were just useless unless it was a basic issue
yeah discord has been one of the best things ever for AO newbies
Well not all discords are equal obviously
obviously but sometimes a question needs to sit for a while and discord tends to move quickly
it's the same issue as reddit
actually reddit is worse
xd
I want to like reddit as a replacement for forums more, but I just don't think it's enough
Reddit has it's own issues
yeah classical forums or something like stackoverflow/stackexchange are good for detailed technical questions
Reddit is not a replacement for anything, it's an echo chamber
dissenting opinions need not apply
I never liked reddit tbh, it's so messy and disorganised
well so's any space depending on how it's managed tbh
it's just digg 2.0 putting popular stuff up
I've nuked people off here and on our official forums and they say the same things ๐
hmm... I feel it's reddit's fault though, because the AO forums are organised, discord is fine, but the AO reddit is a mess
Well perhaps the thing to do is try setting up a sample batch of FAQ's and see how it works
and it's the same people and the same topic
reddit is definitely different, especially for big games
or maybe I'm too dumb for reddit ๐
yah but I can have a discussion as to why ao and FC are total suck and need to improve as opposed to trying that on the league reddit where it's removed instantly
within reason of course
๐
that's a good point, the fact reddit is not moderated makes it unappealing to me too
yeah I mean criticizing us is fine as long as it's somewhat constructive, instead of just insulting individual staff or other players lol
andy smells
reddit has that one guy constantly posting garbage

well no the problem with reddit is how heavily moderated it can be
to the point of it being just curated trash
not the AO reddit anyway ๐
Slight difference of option there between saav and dagger
it can vary depending on sub
some reddits allow for more nuanced discourse while others are pretty locked down
The problem I had was Riot removed all official channels of discussion for their games
forums
opinions like "Omni-Tek isn't your friend" should not be allowed ๐
gone
sometimes people get really uppity and emotional about their relationship to the game so express it in ways that are, uh, unkind at times, which can lead to getting a time-out lol
archives even gone
Some games have a dominate toxic crowed some don't it's just one of those things
yeah
yeah
I mean we had some rough patches here in the AO discord which I had to be a bit heavy-handed about admittedly
but it was pretty rough
sometimes it's still rough, like I guess some beef going on in the screenshots channel haha
rip hurtlocker
I find the AO discord largely a helpful positive place especially for newcomers
I think these days it's pretty good
yeah same
it was dicey at times but we've been in a good place for a while
I think there's good reason for veterans to be upset, especially because there's no communication from FC
not that it's anyone here that's at fault
but I think it's people getting upset for a long period of time
then they explode
I guess that falls on me really, but also there hasn't been a lot to really talk about other than the constant arms race against exploits
I understand that it's very difficult to battle stuff with the ancient cryptic programming that is AO
some issues with the arbiter maybe ๐
lol yes, arbiter
that feels like an easy win
I brought him up again today!! I thought he'd be fixed
woot
Simple answer is just leave the arbiter switched on, no off weeks
I mean sometimes NPCs just break
but some of us have been contacting support for a long time not only with bugs but with how to actually fix them
there's some very smart and talented people who play AO who know a lot
the arbiter is probably weird because he's on calendar time instead of game time since server start like other mobs
yeah support has been really backed up for a long time :/
for sure, and we're in contact with some of them directly although other folks we have a more complicated relationship with
because of their history with breaking stuff, heh
yah they do that
I think one that has been bothering me a lot is the problem with the IRC connections in chat not being secure
people openly spying on our org chats
I've tried to submit reports for years about this
nothing is creepier than saying something in chat and someone seconds later PMing you about it
obviously won't name names as I've reported them many times at this point
I don't expect a lot from AO I just want it to be a better experience
making deleted characters unable to log in the chat server would solve a lot of these issues
Maybe start your own thread "how to fix the game"
I mean I'd have to be vague
I and many others have submitted detailed fixes to problems to fc already
and it's not appropriate to go into detail with some of the issues publicly even if they are well known
I mean I started this thread to thank Andy and talk about how this functionality could be utilized
discussion of exploits aren't allowed on the discord in general
and tbh
that's where a lot of the problems are
But by all means ignore that and carry on
I think the thing right now that isn't ignorable is pvp multiboxing
2-3 people dominating an entire expansion worth of content right now
Can you start your own thread please @hoary rampart ?
and of course
in other news, I found the unfollow post button ๐
no point speaking into the void of people who'd rather put their heads in the sand I'll save my breath
Anyhow thanks again Andy we'll try some FAQ type stuff and see how it plays out
Could be handy for "profession specific" threads ^^
I can say as a person who desperately needs a guide for each new profession I make, having a profession specific thread filled with FAQ's and such would be amazingly handy
the archives and ao-universe are already pretty handy for that
outside of a few very specific things most are plenty good in the modern era
yeah ao-u is invaluable and aoitems is still an extremely good resource too
bless all them
Still trying to see how it works if a thread gets archived
I can pin threads at least but I don't know how that's all displayed
if I archive a thread it gets sent to the bottom of the activity list, not deleted
but it's still really weird
Interesting stuff thank you Andy, A post that got derailed at bit, but it's a test
๐ฎ wots all this then
Cool we can change archive times and title
someone change it to Andy Smeels
New Discord toys just playing/testing them at this point
i guess the issue compared t4o normal forums is normal forums are a lot slower
you get longer and more detailed posts
step 1: run forward ๐
Yeah people it seems genrally are treating it like any other discord channel rather than a forum

So using it for FAQ's might prove problematic
would have to do slow mod, so far it just seems like a seperate channel
I think we're just doing that as a test at the moment
If there are parameters able to be set from a moderators side, I think that might be very helpful to turn it into an "actual" forum
my answers are A C B A A D B C A C C D
6 hours would work
Most people wouldn't bother with quick comebacks and such with a long timer
you underestimate people
6 hours a stretch for any comic timing
I mean also this is just a functionality test
If/when we have more "real" use cases for forum channels vs. regular chat channels we can set different parameters
such as slow mode, archive time, who can use the channel, etc
Curious how pinned posts look
ah okay so they never auto-archive and you can also lock the post, so I guess that could work for FAQ style things
I shall dedicate myself to epic comebacks then ๐
I think for FAQ it will have to locked or well it turns into a regular chat channel as we've just seen
ye
btw: you are doing quite good, imho, i see why some moderation is needed. I only miss the live streams FC used to have ๐
shameless bump, Andy is KING.
