Hello. I’m trying to get NControl working with my iPad and 2 JoyCons. I’m having trouble with the button/joystick mappings. They default to be all wonky like it thinks the joysticks are the d-pad. I’m trying to use the button editing tool to set things properly but it doesn’t seem to work. The mappings don’t seem to update.

Maybe I’m missing a step?

so my button mapping will habe no effect there. however, apple has added button mapping support as well, that might be a 14 thing. ah on 12 theres no officoal implementation for those butrons in the mfi spec

so it sends a series of buttons that apps can specifically listen for

so mapping those buttons wont work properly at all < 13 @quartz cove

i tried to tweak in their support pre 13 but had no luck.

i also no longer have access to any devices on 12 so fixing or debugging that kind of thing has become impossible unfortunately

yep it does work perfectly, this pro controller is at battery level 6 which is above hte threshold and the joycons were at level 4 which is considered low. excellent 🙂 just needs a ton of polish re: the pairing of the joycons together. getting closer finally at least.

Oh, slightly unrelated but sorta related, how does iOS determine if a controller (or any Bluetooth device for that matter) is MFI and shows up on the Bluetooth pairing screen? Does apple have like a massive whitelist on their servers or something that gets updated on-device? Does the Bluetooth device itself have to implement X key for iOS to pick it up?

@lean flame the short and skinny of it is there is a key that is checked at the IOKit level called "Authenticated" and if it exist and is true then apple assumes its a proper MFI device. how this key is normally added or determined i have no clue whatsoever. but if it exists, its allowed through.

so thats for standard MFI devices like the Nimbus or Rotor Riot et al controllers

as far as the DS4 and XBox one controllers they check for the pid/vid combo associated with the controllers but ALSO appear to check for the Device name too (Dualshock 4, Xbox One Controller) respectively IIRC. and they updated gamecontrollerd, bluetoothd, GameController.framework and i think some lower level IOKit stuff as well creating new profiles for the controllers a well. (for XBox One and DS4 support)

but just setting 'Authenticated' key isnt sufficient to actually get things working properly. if their input doesn't match the hid descriptor AND some kind of known controller profile it wont do anything

because initially i just hacked in 'Authenticated' to a DS4 controller and it didnt do anything at all.

(this was *OS 12 days before apple sherlocked support)

they add some kind of service plugins now for supporting DS4 and XBox one that are stored in /System/Library/HIDPlugins/ServicePlugins

as well

i havent bothered to reverse any of that since i already have my own working methodology tho

as far as what devices make it through the bluetooth pairing screen / process has more to do with the private bluetooth framework. each device has a “type” game controller, keyboard, mouse, bluetooth speaker, etc. certain ones are whitelisted as well. (i re-read the question and realized you were more intetested in the bluetooth filtering than how MFI works 🤦‍♂️)

although that only covers legacy bluetooth devices. LE ones are a whole different ballgame.

well to be accepted in the filter it doesnt necessarily need any kind of MFI related key. speakers & keyboards make it through without any special keys because they dont need any kind of MFI compliance

and that particular key is likely created at the system level after some kind of authentication pairing if i had to guess. what exactly are you trying to do?

i am occasionally hearing weird issues with uncover tho, so i might bave to test it in there for once if any of my devices are on the right version. it shouldnt make a difference but who knows at this point. (im always exclusively on checkra1n)
