Rootless means you cannot write to the root filesystem, only leaving /var and /private/preboot being writable. Semi-untethered jailbreaks such as Fugu15/Dopamine must be rootless while semi-tethered jailbreaks can simulate a rootful installation by creating a clone of the existing root filesystem. Current semi-tethered jailbreaks such as palera1n have the option to be rootless anyway.

What does this mean for the average user?
Tweaks would need to be updated to support iOS 15, check if the tweak you’re installing works on 15. Not all tweaks will work out of the box for iOS 15.

Why rootless > rootful:

Yes, tweak compatibility for older tweaks may be better than rootless, but many older tweaks can be patched in various ways to work with a rootless setup.

in the palerain docs it says to use USB-C to Lighting. My setup is as follows:
iPad has a USB-C (not a lighting)
Mac Mini has a USB-C plug in as well

If you are met with an error trying to install the profile after <t:1702530000:D>, you can get around this by setting your device’s date back to a point before <t:1702530000:D> and trying to install the profile again, after it is installed you can set your device’s time back to normal and it will continue blocking updates until the scheduled expiration date.

You can re-enable updates by uninstalling this profile in Settings -> General -> Profiles & Device Management.

If you're jailbroken, you can also install the OTADisabler tweak instead, but note that it is harder to remove while unjailbroken.

hi again. i'm using palen1x and encountering the "heruistic strategy failed, setup packet was not accepted" error. i did my research and it's because I have an AMD cpu and that I'll have be very lucky with my retries

i had to enable virtualization (or sometimes called SVM) in my bios) for the VM to start. but it did the checkm8 stage pretty reliably actually, you might not even need to retry at all. just wait.

then for me, it got to the chess piece thingy but i got an error when trying to connect further to the VM. so while it was on that screen i reboot my PC to the actual distro on my USB stick, and it installed and now i can proceed.

Rootless means you cannot write to the root filesystem, only leaving /var and /private/preboot being writable. Semi-untethered jailbreaks such as Fugu15/Dopamine must be rootless while semi-tethered jailbreaks can simulate a rootful installation by creating a clone of the existing root filesystem. Current semi-tethered jailbreaks such as palera1n have the option to be rootless anyway.

What does this mean for the average user?
Tweaks would need to be updated to support iOS 15, check if the tweak you’re installing works on 15. Not all tweaks will work out of the box for iOS 15.

For unknown reason, if I didn’t do it, the jailbreak will be gone randomly… it’s been 7 days and daily reboot helps to avoid that
