Rootless means you cannot write to the root filesystem, only leaving /var and /private/preboot being writable. Semi-untethered jailbreaks such as Fugu15/Dopamine must be rootless while semi-tethered jailbreaks can simulate a rootful installation by creating a clone of the existing root filesystem. Current semi-tethered jailbreaks such as palera1n have the option to be rootless anyway.

What does this mean for the average user?
Tweaks would need to be updated to support iOS 15, check if the tweak you’re installing works on 15. Not all tweaks will work out of the box for iOS 15.

good morning. I'm trying to jailbreak my ipad 5th gen running ios 16.4.1 with the latest palera1n release on my ubuntu machine.
I ran the jailbreak successfully using sudo palera1n but then I noticed it was the rootless version, so I rebooted my device and ran sudo palera1n -c -f to install the FakeFS, this worked without any issues and the device rebooted, since then I've been trying to run sudo palera1n -f but each time I get a timeout:

on palera1n, rootful installation takes up a lot more room but has better tweak compatibility

you should start with rootless, and if there's tweaks you need that can't be repacked or replaced with a modern alternative, go to rootful

Rootless means you cannot write to the root filesystem, only leaving /var and /private/preboot being writable. Semi-untethered jailbreaks such as Fugu15/Dopamine must be rootless while semi-tethered jailbreaks can simulate a rootful installation by creating a clone of the existing root filesystem. Current semi-tethered jailbreaks such as palera1n have the option to be rootless anyway.

What does this mean for the average user?
Tweaks would need to be updated to support iOS 15, check if the tweak you’re installing works on 15. Not all tweaks will work out of the box for iOS 15.

Has anyone had any luck ssh’ing into their device? I’ve downloaded openssh, tried port 22 and 2222 as mobile and root (I know root doesn’t work anymore), I used the password I used when setting up palera1n. I used a port scanning app and it looks like port 22 isn’t open but 2222 is. Using launchctl on the openssh.plist says the daemon is already loaded. I’m stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sucessfully Jailbroke my Airpad 2 in order to play unsupported games like the infinity blade saga again. I'm using Karens Appsync to do this.

How do I know if I have piracy?
Add the iSecureOS Repo, download iSecureOS, and run a scan.
If you are still not sure if it is piracy or not, you can send the name of the source in to a genius, mod or admin in a DM and ask for further information. If you send a piracy link in a channel you will be filtered and informed further via DM. Doing so may also result in a warning from a member of staff. Use DMs to avoid the possibility.
Do note however that sharing piracy in DMs for any other purpose than asking if it's safe is still a violation of the rules and is warnable.

I’ve tried for two days to get palera1n on my iPhone 8+ on iOS 16.5 it gets to the last part then stops on “booting kernel” and does nothing else. If I do rootless it’ll pull up the Apple logo and checkmate logo then restart the phone with nothing new on on it. With rootful it’ll do the same but gets stuck on that screen and I have to force restart the iPhone. It ever does the “downloading wait 5-10 minutes thing” no matter I do. I’m using a computer with intel.

Hi! I'm trying to use palera1n on my device (see nick) and I get stuck in the timeout step
I'm running an apple silicon mac with a USB-A and an adapter for the USB-C ports on the mac (with a regular USB-C to lightning cable my iPhone wouldn't go into DFU mode), now it enters DFU mode just fine, and I can exit it with the buttons also no problem
I've read that if you encounter a timeout error you should disconnect and reconnect the cable and the device will be detected again in download mode, it doesn't :/
should the screen be black in DFU mode or should I see the apple logo (it's black)

I tried also on an intel based mac and same error, it seems that my iPhone X doesn't enter download mode correctly when being in DFU mode
any tips?

Rootless means you cannot write to the root filesystem, only leaving /var and /private/preboot being writable. Semi-untethered jailbreaks such as Fugu15/Dopamine must be rootless while semi-tethered jailbreaks can simulate a rootful installation by creating a clone of the existing root filesystem. Current semi-tethered jailbreaks such as palera1n have the option to be rootless anyway.

What does this mean for the average user?
Tweaks would need to be updated to support iOS 15, check if the tweak you’re installing works on 15. Not all tweaks will work out of the box for iOS 15.

No, it enters DFU, and when it says it should reconnect in download mode, it then says the DFU device was disconnected. 10 Seconds later, it says timed out. The Phone must be force Rebooted (Volume up, then down then hold power) in order to do anything
