nano 3g/4g (unlike nano 2g and classic) are nasty in that they use an UEFI-based bootloader, which is much more complicated than the older ones
main roadblock on 4g is that (at least back when I was involved) nobody had been able to figure out how to access the flash memory
4g also boots from NAND flash IIRC, while 2g/classic still had a separate NOR boot flash
