So I'm rocking an iPhone 3G running iOS 3.1.3 currently. Jailbroken, has music, photos, tons of apps/games, etc.

I want to update to iOS 4.2.1 real quick to test some things that would work only on iOS 4 and not 3, but I want a backup. I know that backups on older versions of iOS are doo doo and don't preserve half of the contents on the device, especially the jailbreak.

So I want to make a custom IPSW, but replace the root filesystem DMG with a new DMG composed of everything straight from this phone's filesystem.

Here's how I plan to do it:

1. scp -r everything off of the phone onto my Mac
2. Make a dmg from the folder. Should I use Disk Utility or the dmg command from xpwn?
3. Unpack a 3.1.3 IPSW, replace the rootfs dmg, and re-pack
4. put into pwndfu and restore w/ an old version of iTunes

I don't see why this wouldn't work. The only problem is that the rootfs dmg would literally be 7GB, and I know iTunes has to re-partition the disk and if it's so full I wouldn't be surprised if that messes things up but I don't really know how all of that goes.

Chimera's success rate is poor and can take multiple attempts to successfully jailbreak, especially on older devices.

Chimera's success rate can be greatly improved on some devices by injecting the chimera_patch dylib. The easiest way to accomplish this is by downloading the compiled .dylib file from the GitHub repo, and injecting it into the Chimera .ipa with Sideloadly by expanding the "Advanced Options" window and enabling the "Inject dylibs/frameworks" option. Then, proceed like normal.

Please note that, while chimera_patch is open source, it does modify the .ipa and thus can be considered an unofficial patch. If you are not comfortable with doing this, you may follow the steps listed below.

Tips to increase success rate

• Update to the latest Chimera version (ideally 1.6.5 or later)
• Make sure the device is charged above 20%
• Reboot after a failed attempt
• Wait 60 seconds before jailbreaking after a reboot/failed attempt
• Turn low power mode off
• Put your device in front of an air conditioner or fan

i think that's an even worse idea when you can just do it yourself, especially when you should be open to learning things when it comes to jailbreaking. there are two things that have been told to you so far:

1. create a linux live usb
2. use legacy ios kit to jailbreak the device

both of these are not hard tasks at all. there are resources online to do it, you can even use the 2 things above to search in google and follow the result. best of luck

Would anyone be able to help me with my iPhone 4s? I downgraded it to iOS 6 and figured out to sideload apps and stuff, it was awesome and I had alot of fun doing it but the last time I sideloaded an app onto the phone it failed and a grey spring board app appeared on my screen, I can't find anyone else having this speoissue as I cannot sideload apps anymore, it just fails

The springboard application can be deleted but it comes back every time

Hi, I am trying to restore an iPhone 7 Plus using FutureRestore. It gets to the point where the screen turns green but after that it goes to the Apple logo and says “Waiting for device to disconnect…” I am using the latest FutureRestore and Mac OS Monterey. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

but clicked upgrade to ios 12.5.7 from the apple default settings screen and now it won't go to the home screen
