🧠 what you actually need to know first

MDM needs Apple Push Notification Service (APNs) certificates so the server can wake devices — you get those from Apple with an Apple ID. There's no getting around Apple's infra entirely, even when self-hosting.

Common pitfalls include SSL misconfiguration, Apple Push Certificate management, and missing automations. So heads up going in.

🔧 best open-source options

NanoMDM is the recommended path right now:

  • NanoMDM is a minimalist Apple MDM server and library heavily inspired by MicroMDM.
  • A Docker container is built and published to the GHCR.io registry for every release — docker pull ghcr.io/micromdm/nanomdm:latest.

MicroMDM (older, being phased out):

  • MicroMDM v1 is in maintenance mode and support officially ends at the end of 2025. You're encouraged to explore or migrate to NanoMDM.

🪜 high-level setup steps

  1. Get an APNs push cert — you need an Apple Developer account to generate an MDM push certificate. Go to Apple's Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles page and select MDM CSR under Production. If this option is disabled, you'll need to contact Apple to enable it — you can email devprograms@apple.com.

  2. Set up a SCEP server (for device identity certs) — if you don't already have a SCEP server, you'll need to set one up. For a quick start you can use MicroMDM's SCEP server project.

  3. Run NanoMDM — NanoMDM is just one component of a functioning MDM server. At a minimum you also need a SCEP server and TLS termination.

  4. TLS is mandatory — Apple devices require strict HTTPS for enrollment and ongoing management. Self-signed or expired certs will cause profile install failures.

  5. Create and serve an enrollment profile — enrollment profiles are not included in NanoMDM — you'll need to create and serve your own enrollment profiles to devices. The profile is a .mobileconfig file that points devices at your server.

  6. Enroll devices — devices hit your server URL, install the profile, and boom they're enrolled.

⚠️ heads up

  • Out of the box, NanoMDM is API/CLI only — no web console. For non-technical use you'd need to deploy an open-source UI or write your own scripts.
