In my experience, ProRes. For some reason the H264 and HEVC hardweare encoders overload very easily on Apple silicon

At least if you're recording in 4K, that is.

Sub-4K any of the options are probably fine.

Turn off HDR in the console's settings when you're using the cap card. Should fix the issue. You can find it in display settings on Series X

Your video input flips because you have CEC enabled on the console as well. you can turn that off to prevent that from happening.

It's the setting that turns on your TV/switches input when you turn your Xbox on.

I've tried recording 4K footage across three different macs now, and I seem to only be able to reliably capture 4K in ProRes without an encoder overload.

I've tested on an M4 Pro Mac mini, an M3 MacBook Air and an M1 Mac mini.

I've used all 3 hardware encoders, and no matter how low I set the bitrate, I'll always get an error. ProRes is fine, but the files are way too large. I'd be happy to use it if it didn't take up about 20 gigs a minute.

I'm new here... been playing around with OBS for a little while, but need configure it.

I am recording a meeting this weekend. 2 HDMI cameras, 1 webcam, several audio sources. The stream goes out to the meeting projector and to another PC running Zoom. Ideally it is possible to feed video from Zoom to the main projector.

I can arrange a single stream input to be recorded. I'm not sure how to configure OBS to output the main stream to e.g. HDMI so it can be sent to the projector.

I would like to see on my mac screen (and ideally record) all the input video streams. I think this has something to do with "studio mode" but can only see 1 video stream.
I have discovered the 'branch output' plugin but am not sure how to use it to record the input, independent of the scene.

Any thoughts?

SR can be unstable on Windows too, I don't know about stability of Branch Output, just that its main use seems to be multstreaming. So multiple recordings are a little more complex to set up

yes, if possible. One reason for having several cameras is so that if one is blocked (by something in the room) I can switch to another, but I need to see what isn't live.

Probably the easiest way is to make a scene that contains all the cameras arranged so you can see them all. Then right click the scene and choose Projector Windowed and keep that visible for yourself on one of your displays

nothing in OBS specifically prevents it; chances are you'll be limited by encoder resources. you might be able to get away with it on a max or ultra chip, or using a software encoder, but it's likely to be highly demanding

Hi, I've been having a bit of an issue with my OBS where basically after some time, the screen capture will "freeze", "footage" will keep being recorded, and my voice will still be recorded fine, but the footage will just be a still image of whatever was on the screen when it froze

Hello, so i cant remux this video on my pc for some reason for MKV to MP4 but it works with other files. The video im trying to remux is about 2 hours long, 7 Gb, MKV, 4k, x265 encoded, 5.1 audio, HDR, and 24 fps. (its a movie if you couldnt tell) btw i checked my storage and its not the issue and set my recording oath folders to the same stuff as well. The error message is “Recording remuxed, but the file maybe incomplete”, and then a 0 byte mp4 pops up that wont open. I would really appreciate your help thank you!

if it's h264, apple hardware encoders will not support 8k

h265 and prores hardware are theoretically fine with 8k but i haven't tested it

CBR and ABR are more demanding on the hardware encoders than CRF also, so you might be up against limits there

software encoders are generally more tolerant of doing whatever you want, but will obviously use more of your 'generalized' system resources

Hi all, question with recording issue in OBS (i don’t have logs unfortunately), but sometimes a screen recording on a 16gb macbook air with 512 ssd will record normally, but upon playback of the video, it will only be the first frame of the video frozen theoughout the entire clip. Has anyone else encountered this problem? We’re using a program called EZ Worship with OBS for our livestream. It connects from a desktop computer running EZ Worship to our Macbook Pro which runs OBS. OBS receives that output via NDI, using HDMI as input. Within the EZ Worship program, it uses a Power Point presentation. The problem is, when Power Point is activated, the NDI input drops out. How can we solve this problem?

Hey Everyone, I'm having an issue with OBS bringing in my video so that I can then record. I'm trying to capture gameplay from my PS5, using OBS on an M1 Max Macbook Pro, and an Elgato 4KX. About 60% of the time I will get everything hooked up, turn on the console, select the right HDMI input, turn on OBS, and things will work as expected. The other times I will get to the step of opening OBS and find that my video is not being brought in. My current way of handling this is to turn things off and start the process again. Sometimes I go through 1 round of this and things work again other times I go through 5-6 rounds with no success. Is there anything I should do to ensure my video showing up more consistently? Hello, I’ve been battling with my elgato for days. Sounds coming through, but it’s a tad bit laggy. Stream is def laggy. I have a ps5 but by elgato is connected to my MacBook Air. I’m so unsure on the best obs settings. I feel like I’ve tried everything. I have a MacBook Air 1.2HGz Quad Core intel core i7. With a 16GB memory and an intel iris plus graphics. I set the encoder to Apple VT H264 Hardware Encoder but it doesn’t give the option for CBR rate control, only ABR. When I load into stream, it lags so bad. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. Bitrate I’ve fluctuated between 3500-6000 to see what works.

I need help with OBS on macOS.

I'm trying to record Undertale and my LiveSplit One timer, but OBS is not detecting them properly.

Game Capture doesn't work since I'm on macOS.
Window Capture doesn't show Undertale or LiveSplit One.
Even Opera GX is not detected, so I suspect OBS is not recognizing any individual windows.
I've already tried:
✅ Running the game in windowed mode.
✅ Checking permissions in System Preferences.
✅ Using Display Capture, but I only want to record the game and timer, not my whole screen.

Is there any way to make OBS detect Undertale and LiveSplit One properly? Or do I need a plugin like Syphon Inject?

Does anyone know howwww i can separate audio on my OBS? Audio thats coming from my PS5, and my rodecaster duo?

I have literally done it all but the only thing i can’t understand/ figure out… how the heck do i separate audio? Do i do it from settings > audio > choosing what goes in what aux slot? Or through sources?

I know my rode caster duo is pushing all my sounds into obs on one track, but i dont know how to separate it? So far i figured, i can use different faders on my rodecaster duo and assign / route diff sounds to them, like now im using the bluetooth to connect to my phone and play spotify music from there rather than from my macbook spotify app.. but everybody keeps complaing my Spotify is super loud. So atleast this way i can control the volume of Spotify from my mixer and has its own channel… but alll those faders (whatever volumes ive set each of them at) come into one audio track in obs… thats find… i just dont understand why my PS5 audio is suppppper low. My ps5 abd monitor are directly connected to my macbook, and i use a chatlink cable to connect my headset and 0s5 controller to the rode caster so that i can hear everything. Unfortunately, although the ps5 is connect directly to mac using the elgato capture card, why cant my audio hear the ps5 volume? I check everything was tirned up, everything should be working, but im missing something here…

The stream as a whole has the delay. If individual sounds seem delayed from what they should normally sound like, that would be a technical issue to solve.

Like if the sound of a gunshot in game doesnt match the visual of the gun firing in game

Or if your voice doesnt sync to your facecam when you talk. Those are audio sync / drift issues

my stream has a delay ranging from 5 seconds to 25 seconds overall depending on which viewer i ask

Another quick question - maybe you can help.. The audio on my recordings is always too quiet despite having additional 15 decibels on the input. The Mac mic is close to peaking but when I then play back the recording, I have to put loudness close to maximum just to hear properly

Heyo! I've got a question for folks here that has really had me banging my head against the wall for something that seems pretty basic.

I am trying to capture a section of my screen which is not very big, but OBS insists on maintaining the aspect ratio of my monitor and filling the extra space with black.

I am trying to get rid of those black bars above and below.

No matter what I do, it insists on recording the empty space.

I don't mean to come here with something to basic, but I have been at this for hours, and I feel like there has to be something incredibly basic that I am missing.

If I resize the red box, it just does this:

Additionally, it will only output OVERALL at resolutions that my screen supports. The area I am looking to capture is only maybe 700x120 pixels. Is there any way to just select a portion of the screen and have it record that at native resolution? That seems like the most basic possible thing that I could ask it to do.

So I recently bought streaming equipment to (obviously) start streaming. I've got my Mic set up as well as my XIIXMASK capture card connected to my Xbox and Mac. The mic is picking up noise and OBS says that the game volume is playing but when I start a twitch stream, my voice and my game audio are either super choppy or not audible at all. Hello! I'm trying to help someone record their Zoom meetings using OBS Studio. I suggested using OBS Studio because they need to capture 2 shared screens, and Zoom only gives you one active shared screen at a time in their recording. This person uses dual monitors to watch both shared screens on the call, so we're using a canvas that's twice as wide as the monitor resolution with 2 display sources side by side.

We've successfully recorded both displays multiple times now. However, recently, OBS Studio has malfunctioned in two main ways:

1. Sometimes, OBS Studio won't show the Zoom windows, even though those windows are visible on the monitors. The OBS preview and the recorded file will show whatever windows are underneath the Zoom windows. Sometimes we've been able to fix this by restarting OBS Studio.
2. Other times, restarting OBS Studio will restore only one monitor, and the scene will show a duplicate of that monitor instead of the other monitor. In order to fix this, we've had to remove the sources entirely, then add them back to the scene.

Can anyone help me understand what might be causing this to happen? I'm a Windows user myself, so it's harder for me to test what might be going wrong on this person's Mac.

we don't know; as far as we can tell, homebrew actually does things correctly, but it somehow screws up some internal state management in macOS for system extensions

which is why i at least have suspected that the issue shouldn't be unique to homebrew and someone like you would eventually hit it

@heavy escarp basically all OBS does is ask the system for a device handle matching the UUID of our camera extension process. if you're seeing that error, it means that macOS did not return any device handle for our UUID. so if you see that, but the camera extension process is running (which, for you it is), and the extension matches our version (for you it does), then the failure is an internal macOS one that we cannot do anything about

I use OBS for streaming on Mac (M2 pro, latest os). 2nd latest version of the software.

I have 2 different problem cases where core audio seems to be the problem source:

1. I have external USB mixer. Sometimes it gets ”disconnected” and if you open the tab to change audio source it straight crashes the app. Usually it keeps crashing it few more times after opening the app again.

2. I use instant replay plugin. I do sports streams and usually once per game it keeps just stopping to work. For my knowledge it is more about shortkeys not working, than the plugin itself not working. This also I suspect is because of coreaudio. (Due to it keep showing up in loggs).

This is really problematic because I need to use Win and Mac for streams and OBS would be best for mac without these crashes. If someone can help and make the fix I’m willing to pay some (not much..) $ or donate to charity of your chosing.

Hi, I record short screen recordings for my students, roughly 10 - 20 minutes long and as of today, my file sizes have almost doubled and I have no clue why. A roughly 20 minute video went from 74 MB to 174 MB and now giving me trouble uploading to where these need to go.

As far as I can tell, I haven't changed any setting in OBS, let alone see anything that looks like it would be the cause. I also tried updating it to the most current version, 31.0.2, and it still recording larger files than normal.

In my output settings under the recording section:
recording quality: high quality, medium file size
recording format: MPEG-4 (.mp4)
video encoder: software (x264)
audio encoder: AAC (default)
audio track {1 checked}
custom mixer settings {none}

and in my video settings
base (canvas) resolution: 1920x1080
output (scaled) resolution: 1920x1080
downscale filter: {resolution match, no downscaling required}

No, it has been there always. About 8 months or so.

you can turn down the fps values to 30 since most things are in 30 fps and not 60 and you can try turning your output resolution down to 1280x720

where your posting these videos to is probably compressing it down to 30 fps anyway

So I'm back here again after a while.. Every single time I try to open OBS, I get a popup saying "OBS did not shut down properly during your last session. Would you like to start in Safe Mode (third-party plugins, scripting, and WebSockets disabled)?" with 2 options to either run in safe mode or run normally. Clicking any of the options won't open OBS, and it'll just be stuck on infinitely loading. The only way to close it is to right click on the OBS icon and manually close it.
One way I found to open OBS is to paste a short script into the terminal and run it, but that leaves me with no recording to my windows. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

i said before, the h264 hardware encoders wouldn't support what you were trying to do, they don't support anything above 4,000 in either dimension. this isn't an OBS limitation, it's just what the hardware supports

The replay buffer is a feature that allows you to keep a rolling buffer of OBS' output for a set amount of time (known as "flashback recording"), which can be saved to disk as a recorded video when a hotkey is pressed. You can enable it via Settings -> Output.

I’m having an issue with recording on Windows and playing on MacOS. I play/record games on my windows PC and would like to be able to edit the videos in iMovie on my MacBook but iMovie/QuickTime can’t open the videos. I am able to play them on the pc so the files are not corrupted. They also open in Davinci and VLC on the mac. I’d just prefer iMovie because I’m barely doing more than cutting clips so davinci is a bit overkill/complicated relative to what I need.

Are there any settings that I should watch out for for compatibility between the two? I’m recording to an mp4 using the NVENC HEVC encoder, 6 audio tracks, NV12, Rec 709

hey yall, so I am using OBS. I'm streaming from my PS5 using a capture card. When I'm in OBS its showing my layout, music, gameplay etc no problem... HOWEVER, when i switch scenes, it switches in OBS but its not switching on my twitch stream. i have no clue what i'm doing wrong and cant find anything anywhere on how to fix this. Hi all, I'm having issues with separating my xlr mics with the rode rodecaster pro 2 on a mac using obs. I've set the rode to multitrack. Set usb 1 output in the rode app to post-fader (output) and usb 1 input to expanded.

In obs I've added an audio source selecting the "rodecaster pro II Main Multitrack" for all 4 mics. Then went in to the settings of the obs audio mixer to individually select each track.

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. Any advice?

I'm having this same issue. I can't track down whether it's OBS having a problem seeing the video source, or if my Video Capture Card is working intermittently. I got this same black screen only, and no option to select the capture card in the dropdown when adding a source.... to then it suddenly all working as intended. For about 3-4 days. Now black screen again. Didn't change a thing other than a reboot. All new cables and equipment. Tried unplugging and replugging in everything (multiple times). Many reboots. Nothing. SO frustrating!!

HI all, I have recently updated my setup and am looking to record google meet and other stuff, however I am having some issues getting audio through the recording.

My setup
Steinberg 4ch interface
Rhode External Mic plugged into Steinberg
Externmal monitor speakers also coming out of the steinberg

When I open OBS I have my mic set to the Steinberg, I have desktop audio that only has 3 options, default, blackhole 16ch, and microsoft teams audio ( and I Don't use teams)
Then I have my macOS screencapture.

If I have the mic/audx setting to steinberg I have metering on the OBS meter.

I have tred to have my mac sound output set to blackhole 16ch as well as multi output device. I have gone through the help files but can't seem to get the screen recording using the external mic and sound from the google meet. Any assistnace would be great.

I use a 2020 macbook air. when i downloaded obs there were 2 options/versions and i didnt really think before clicking one. Im thinking i mightve clicked the wrong one or something. Okay, I figured it out. I installed the Silicon Mac version, changed the recording to MKV, and changed my hotkey to "Start/Stop Streaming" to "Start/Stop Recording". Turns out, I actually wanted a recording hotkey instead of a streaming one. Thanks!

Also, is there any way to get my OBS hotkey to work while I'm on a different window? For example, I can hit my recording hotkey while in Firefox.

What seems to be your hit/miss issue?

I've been using an M1 Macbook pro, 16gb memory for some fairly hefty sports livestreams. My experience has been excellent with it!!

We've definitely been pushing it's capabilities, and have crashed sometimes, though I believe this is due to RAM. VDO has worked excellent for us, however I did notice that using the instant replay plugin on a VDO camera feed uses significantly more memory than a camera run directly into the mac with a capture card.

I need to improve the framerate when recording. I have a Mac with Apple Silicon, more specifically a MacBook Pro with an Apple M4 Max chip. I'm only getting about 20-30 fps out of my target 60 fps. As in, OBS is still asking me to confirm the access in preferences, but when I go there, it says "Apps that have requested access to your microphone will appear here." when I am streaming to Youtube at the recommended settings, and recording at the same, I am getting artifacts (unreadable, messy) in my streams and recording.. I tried CRF at 50,75,and 90% quality (without much difference) but got 2gb files in 1 minute. What can I do to make my stream better? My internet has a max upload of 41.43 MBps

For streaming bitrate, try 32000. That's about as high as you can go stably. 12000 isn't enough for 1080p, much less 1440.

I tried a stream and it dropped 720 of 4514 frames at 32000.. Quality seems the same as 12000. Is there more that I could change?

Try lowering it 1000 at a time until it stops dropping frames. It would still look rather blurry even at higher bitrates because Youtube reencodes everything unfortunately.

Also try using this weird output resolution: 2112x1188 It's lower res so needs less bitrate, but it will still get you the slightly better YT encoding called VP09

OBS Studio requires permissions from macOS to provide certain features. To grant them:

1. click on the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
2. enable each of the permissions using the buttons on the right-hand side

• (a) click on OK/Allow for the microphone and camera prompts
• (b) grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Preferences/Settings
  3. restart OBS Studio

hi, i tryed to run obs for a stream i was going to do but it keeps crashing, it wont even open, i have the crash logs if anyone needs them, no matter what i try, it wont run, i tryed safe mode too, it wont even open for a split sec

This isn't the problem, there is no prompt saying that OBS asked for anything. Even after going to OBS > Review App Permissions > Request Access for anything other than accessibility, OBS does not show up

this time with another stack, but still browser init, I'm guessing browser dock

its never done this before, it worked monday, and tuesday, but stoped, could it be that when i tryed to record something right before it did this? heres what i did tuesday, i was chatting with my gf on discord, and i tryed recording on obs for the first time, and it lagged the fuck out of my game, so i just deciced to scratch the recording, i never deleted it, could that have something to do with it?

yeah, their tracs was source init at first and gradually removing sources showed the load of the SC progressing along, crashing on each browser source, till no more browser source in the sc, where it fully loaded, but crashed after sc load with that other trace

so I4m almost positive it's not a specific url
