under settings->output->video encoder, change that to something like "hardware (h.264)"

your macOS audio capture source may possibly be redundant if you already have a macOS screen capture source, in which case you may be able to remove it

rendering the preview is also quite expensive, so if you really want to keep that resolution and fps, you could try disabling the preview

What is the benefit of changing that setting? Like, what does it do that would result in a different end product (in this case a recording)?
Also, I didn't realize the macOS screen capture source already records internal audio? That could be the issue here. The game runs fine otherwise

hardware encoders use dedicated parts of your machine for encoding video, so they are usually much faster and efficient than a software encoder, which makes the CPU do it

On macOS, the menu bar is located at the top of the screen, not the OBS Studio window. If you are in full screen mode and cannot see the menu bar, move your cursor to the top of the screen.

Thanks for the help last night, i have another question. For live streaming in 4k, from the iphone 13, and OBS on laptop (All latest OS versions) on the latest Mac Book Pro, can someone tell me what is the best streaming configurations for the optimum crisp visual quality? from your log you posted before, you were streaming with x264 at 2500 kbps, which will certainly not work well for 4k resolution

if you're streaming to youtube, you can probably use the HEVC hardware encoder, and you'll want to use up to youtube's maximum of 51,000 kbps (if your internet can support that)

to change to the hardware encoder, under settings->output->streaming, you'll want to change "video encoder" to "hardware, HEVC"

it looks like you're having connection issues, which is causing your encoding sessions to restart, which may be causing them to overload, since videotoolbox doesn't always handle restarts very well. i would look into solving your connection issues first

HELP! Running Mac OS Sequoia 15 and Proclaim presentation software. I can't believe there was something on a PC that worked better! We used to have a Window Capture Device and then once we started the slideshow, we'd select which "window" we wanted to capture and it pulled it in. Now, on BRAND NEW Mac, I have to select the both "Show windows with empty names" and "Show fullscreen and hidden windows / applications" and then I get this HUGE list and the only way to get the right window is to try every "Proclaim" until it shows the right one. This is going to be so confusing for my volunteers!! HELP!!!

Hello friends, good afternoon, if it's not too much trouble, I'd like to ask a question. I'd like to thank you in advance for your attention to whoever is reading this.

I started streaming on Twitch with a Macbook Air M1, using the latest version of OBS. I streamed normally for a month, but it seems that OBS now always closes due to the heat of the Macbook.

Every time I turn on OBS on my Macbook Air M1, my Mac gets VERY hot. I've searched everywhere and apparently there's no information about this. I've tried every possible way to configure it and I can't find a solution.

I'm sending this question because OBS now starts to heat up to the point of crashing in the middle of the stream and last night the stream crashed 8 times due to the heat.

Does anyone know of a way I can research how to solve this, or if this is a problem that actually happens on Mac, or if there is a version of OBS for Mac that doesn't get so hot?

your computer gets hot when it's under load. the macbook air has no fans, so it can't cool itself down.

you will need to either make your computer do less work (i.e. simplify your OBS scenes, lower your resolution or FPS, close other applications), or ventilate it better or use it in a cooler environment. OBS is a demanding application and it's not really recommended to use it with a machine that has no active cooling

feel free to post a clean log of a session, someone might be able to identify obvious things that can be fixed. but overall this is just a problem with any machine that doesn't have fans

maybe im not using the best source for what im trying to accomplish. i'm a real estate agent. I'm trying to make a video that is half me talking into the camera, and half displaying a document. i want the cursor to be visible so i can explain the document to the viewer. The only way i have figured out how to do that is to use the browser source. i don't know how to make the documenet show up on screen capture.

well, the window with the document in it should be in the dropdown list for window capture there, so it should just be a matter of selecting it, and then the cursor will show up whenever it's over the window

Hi, I am trying to make a setup where I can use the Continuity Feature on the Mac to use the iPhone camera wirelessly as well as the iPhone Mic. I can do it with the camera just fine, but when I try to use the iPhone mic as an input I can see it on the mixer but can't hear anything when I record. Anyone know why?

Noticing that when RTMP streams stop being published to, which are being played by a Media source OBS Source or a VLC video source, and then re-published to, that many times the audio portion of the stream makes it while the video portion does not, and sometimes neither make it. And this is definitely an OBS issue because when viewing the RTMP stream using the VLC app it plays just fine with the video included as well, just doesnt seem to reload.

Attempts at using a macro with Advanced Scene Switcher doesn't work too well because the source is always in the "Playing" state. What semi-helps (although inconsistently it looks like) is to use the OBS websocket to toggle the VLC Media source off when the source stream has ended (using the nginx rtmp module) and toggle it back on when a new stream has started.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced it and maybe know of a good and consistent method to prevent this behavior?

When i record and make videos a "hidden" and "duplicate" copy of each one is made, i had to get on the phone with apple support to help find what was taking up so much space when the computer itself couldn't find anything , i have it exporting as a .mov and remux is off so not sure why that after i delete the footage i find a copy in a random hidden file

Trying to use OBS to stream from Premire. I have entered the stream key and server but I am getting the error Invalid Path or Connection URL. Please check your settings to confirm that they are valid.This seems to be a fairly generic error dealing with a setting issue of some kind but as of yet I have not been able to figure out which setting. I have not usedOBS for a while but have now come back and just updated to the newest version. Since then, I get an error when trying to start the virtual camera that says: "Could not find virtual camera. Please try again".
I believe I have all permissions in place.

Hello, I was using a very beginner-friendly streaming online software, but they recently doubled their price. So I guess it's time to learn what the big boys use.

One feature that I am looking for is the ability to quickly at the click of a button, share different video clips. Think like someone says a 'magic word' and I click a video in a list of videos, it plays the 10 second magic word video, and then returns back to the default scene.

Is this possible in OBS? Thus far I see the ability to create scenes, load up video clips, etc - but that is too slow for my needs. Can someone please advise? Thanks

To give you an idea of what I mean - while I'm streaming, I see a list of the videos to the right, I click them, they play for a few seconds, and transition back. It's very quick .

I am using Mac OS Sequoia 15.0.
When I try to use the OBS virtual camera, I get a statement that the virtual camera is not installed.
I tried to follow the directions to deal with it, but the page to do the security permissions as instructed was not in place, and reinstalling OBS, etc. did not remedy that.

There are a couple ways of doing this. The one with the least configuration would probably be a VLC Source (requires VLC Player to be installed) as it supports providing a playlist, and then you just move whichever video you want to the top. There's a third party plugin with the same idea https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/media-playlist-source.1765/

You could combine it with the DSK to overlay it over whatever your current scene is https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/downstream-keyer.142247/ or use something like Advanced Scene Switcher https://obsproject.com/forum/resources/advanced-scene-switcher.395/

I've got VirtualDJ as my software, a Traktor Kontrol Z2 mixer, and my Macbook Air.

I’m sending a sine wave from the oscillator to my streaming matrix on an X32. My matrix is sent to a card output at pre-fade+m. The oscillator is set to -10dB. No EQ on the matrix. In OBS however, it’s only coming in at -12dB. The audio device is set to 0.0dB

you're on an old version of OBS; in the current release version the audio meters are more visible. that looks like your input is coming in at more like -3db though. the difference could be due to a great many things given the number of devices in the chain. what is your usecase where the precise decibel level matters?

Hey guys,
I have a question about capturing Browser window audio. So I used to be able to just add a new browser window and the audio would record. Now, for some reason, that's no longer the case. Maybe due to an update...
I'm recording in OBS through a guitar interface (NUX MP3), which I have a headset with mic connected to. This way I can record my playing and give commentary through the headphone mic. Worked flawlessly, since I can also monitor through that.

Well, I'm trying to record another window, but for some reason - even though I have the link for "control Audio through OBS" selected, there's no audio coming through, and the volume sliders are greyed out.

Please have a look at the screenshots and let me know what I can do to capture audio from a window and which setting I'm obviously missing.

@forest axle so i tried this, i changed the resolution to 1920x1080 recorded on my monitor then reviewed the clip on my monitor and it was blurry. I then screen recorded on my Macbook with 3024x1964 and reviewed it on my Mac and it looked blurry as well. I then sent my vidoes to my Iphone and the vidoes still looked blurry. Is it possibly something else?

Hey, new here, but ive been getting a weird bug the last few weeks:

One of my application inputs will randomly freeze. The rest of the inputs are working fine (such as .gif and audio). I have to change the window capture input, then change it back and it works again.

The time between outages is inconsistent and there doesnt appear to be any other triggers.

Anyone know how to get less dropped frames? I ran a speed test and had 500down/about 35 upload. I’ve been running on my MacBook Pro (2017) and have had some decreased frame rate a bit when running 720p30 but nothing as severe as the last two streams. Any way to make it more efficient without having to lower my output source. It is saying I’m only on 20% CPU usage and I’ve noticed the games use a lot of green. Any suggestions to get less or no dropped frames/lower frame rate? Maybe a better capture card?

It was so odd too, it had no issues in the minute I went live yesterday to test it running the same settings, I had done a speed test too, and no issues last night. Really odd. I think it might have been things had already been sort of hot on my MacBook but I’m not sure. I’ve heard a lot of green can cause issues and some games I play do have a lot of green (like donkey Kong 64 which i was trying to play Thursday)

Hi, I got issues streaming from PS5 to OBS to Twitch. I am running on a macbook pro M1 2020, using a capture card from ps5 and streaming to twitch, for the past 18 months had zero issues, but since the latest Mac OS update in september, I have been experiencing dropped frames and choppy video in my streams. I have not changed anything setting on obs or changed my hardware at all. I can stream directly from my ps5 to twitch so I know the ISP is not the issue. Can you help?

application capture shows whatever parts of the application are visible on your display

thus, when you tab out of the application, it's no longer visible on your display, so you'd see a black screen

that's expected, and is why you would normally use window capture for the usecase where you want the capture to persist at all times

Hey everyone,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster here.

I wanted to ask if there’s a possibility of changing how the multiview works. I typically use it in the traditional way, with the preview and program on top and my usual eight scenes on the bottom. However, for a special event I'm working on next weekend, I’ll need to display 12 scenes on the bottom row instead of the usual 8.

I Did notice theres a 16 scene option but this isn’t an issue at home where I use a 32-inch display, but when I’m out doing this production, Im only able to carry a 27-inch monitor. It would be great to have more flexibility with the multiview in these situations.

Right now to be clear im mainly on mac, but i will be using a windows pc for the stream on saturday.

Overall, the software is fantastic! I’ve been using it since 2017 when I first discovered it, and I’ve loved it ever since. I’m planning to make a donation soon to thank the developers and everyone who contributes in any way.

Hi, my situation is that I just got this capture card and I’m looking to use it with my obs, the video and display comes in perfectly but there’s no audio to my stream at all. When I went to look at the audio mixer (cause I was informed to set my capture cards audio monitoring to a different setting) it only shows my capture card as inactive and I have no idea how to make it say active, please help. if you want your voice to appear in OBS, you'll need to capture it somehow. if you're using your ps5 headset, your microphone audio is going only to your PS5. your PS5 is sending its audio to the capture card, but that does not include your voice

if you have another microphone, you can add that as a source in OBS; otherwise you will usually need an extra peripheral to capture audio from a headset while also sending it to your console

This seems to happen if I have been streaming a scene for a while and then wish to switch to another scene that contains multiple cameras. When connecting video capture on iPhone 12 in portrait mode, it displays in landscape orientation. The resolution is set to 1080x1920, and I couldn’t find any solutions through Google or by searching on ChatGPT. When I use the iPhone in portrait mode, it’s zoomed in and displayed in landscape, but when I switch to landscape, the zoom is removed, and it looks like a normal landscape view. What I did in the past after trying and failing was placing the camera far away and zooming in on the Mac, but now I've changed rooms and can no longer place the camera far away, so it’s too close, and I want to fix this. hello, does anyone experience micro stutter using a capture card?

the stutter happens ocassionally with no dropped frames whatsoever. changing resolution didn't help either. the only thing helps with the stutter if I enable "Use Buffering" option on video capture. but it introduces new issue, my audio lag will increase over time.

I'm using 16" M1 Max, tried with avermedia live streamer cap 4k and elgato camlink 4k, both stutters.

yeah that's fine. in this instance it looks like your source is simply smaller than your canvas, so you should just be able to either 1. select your source and drag it to enlarge it, or 2. shrink your canvas to match the size of your source

something odd happened to me i downloaded the app canva from the app store to edit a photo and somehow all my .mkv recordings got the canva app logo in finder

Sounds like the app registered a file association with mkv files.

See if you can Get Info on an MKV file in MacOS itself (via the right click menu). There should be an option there to change the app associated to that file extension

yes. it looks like your macOS is up to date, which is the main thing i was going to recommend

unfortunately there is a macOS bug that causes macOS screen capture to freeze sometimes when capturing for long periods. the only thing to do right now is to keep an eye on it, and when it freezes you can use the "restart capture" button in the source properties to restart it. beyond that, we have to wait for apple to address it

I am using macOS Sonoma, and while using my Canon DSLR 200D as a web cam, I already have the EOS Webcam Utility installed, but it's not showing anything. I checked it on my Ventura Mac system, and it's working there. I guess OBS needs to access the local network on Sonoma for it to work. Can someone please help me with this?

it's not so much zooming out that you need. your source is larger than your canvas, so you probably want to shrink your source

to resize a source, you can select it and click and drag corners and edges. if you want your canvas to become larger to fit that source, you would do what penwyvern suggested. generally, what exactly you want depends on what you're trying to use OBS for

Hi everyone, i got a macbook air m1, i use obs only for recordings, i record with apple tv hevc encoder hardware, CBR, 10000 kbps, 0s fps key and bframe. I use only 11% of my cpu, but the video after 20/30 minutes is slower, then faster, then slower… can someone help me?

CPU usage figures can be misleading, because they don't reflect hardware encoder use. without active cooling, even modest workloads will make the macbook air get too hot eventually. given what you've described, that is almost certainly what is happening

the bitrate is fine. lowering your settings somewhat like resolution and fps could help, yes

if you aren't hitting thermal throttling until 30 minutes, you're probably close to not having issues and could maybe get away with lower recording settings

OBS Studio requires permissions from macOS to provide certain features. To grant them:

1. click on the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
2. enable each of the permissions using the buttons on the right-hand side

  • (a) click on OK/Allow for the microphone and camera prompts
  • (b) grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Preferences/Settings
    3. restart OBS Studio

looks like your display capture source is just larger than your canvas. if you want to make it the same size as your canvas, you can drag the corner of it to resize it
