How can I get the OBS app on my mac to take 1080p screen recoding of a window that's open elsewhere on my screen?

I have been able to take a video but it comes out very pixelated

you can't adjust the volume with an aggregate device because of macOS. if you are able to upgrade to macOS 13 or above, you can set up audio capture more easily without using audio devices

Personally IDK about anything re: video capture cards but I use the hardware H265 encoder with upload BW set to 25000kbps@60FPS and then let YouTube transcode to VP9

IDK Twitch specs but if you have an M2 or newer then you can encode to VP9 directly in hardware

I had a similar problem, eventually got it to work by reinstalling OBS because it removes permissions and forces you to re add permissions on macOS

to resolve that error you should just need to log out and in from your machine. the error message will be more descriptive in the next version of OBS (pending localization updates)

you can lower your resolution if you're only interested in 1080p, or your framerate if you don't care about 60+fps

those will both result in smaller files

bc if you’re streaming directly from console that’ll just happen from time, i believe, i haven’t streamed from console in years so im unsure how to fix resolution, but if you were to get a capture card it’ll make the screen a lot more clear

Hello all! I just joined this Discord so I’m sorry if the question I’m about to ask as already been asked several times 😅

I recently started streaming my drums practices and it’s been going great! However, I came across a problem. When I stream on OBS my video feed breaks a bit (for 2-5 secs every 3-5 minutes), but that doesn’t happen on Streamlabs (I multi-stream). I’ve even changed the platform I’m streaming to in each app (OBS and Streamlabs), but the problem remains only on OBS.
It’s probably relevant to mention I have a MacBook Pro M3 and I’ve seen many people with silicon Macs saying they have similar problems

they aren't too too tricky. in a trace, usually the main thing to look at is which thread labeled as the crashed thread. then the next lines are the stack frame in the crash, starting at the bottom. on those lines the first element is the frame number, then the binary name, then the address of the actual code in the binary, which is symbolicated if there are symbols immediately available. manually symbolicating is a pain but doable. usually you can identify what's going on from that alone; here, it's clear that the stream deck binary is the one crashing. plus this has the familiar circumstance of crash on deleting a source, which is the same thing all platforms faced for awhile, not just macOS

json representations are nice in theory but yeah, makes crashes unreadable on any other platform

i've noticed that a lot of the time now the .ips file contains invalid json at the bottom with extra information and you have to manually remove it before console.app will even show you the human-readable

the json representation is also fairly useless unless you're apple, since there is no tool that will symbolicate automatically anymore (unless you're using xcode/app store top to bottom, i guess)

hi, i have a macbook pro and I bought an used Elgato HD60 X video capture card. I used OBS to make some videos, I always had problems with the audio, it would play in the recordings but not in my headphones. now after some month I'm trying to use OBS again, I tried to reinstall it and for now it's working (the audio). the other problem I have it's with streaming, I wanna try make some streams on Youtube, it words but pretty bad, sometimes the audio cuts off and I can't hear anything in my headphones, the quality of the video it's not that great, but I tried to put the right setting so it'll work, if I put quality of the settings higher than the video turns bad. Also the colors are weird, it's darker and the red it's really red, I also tried to fix this with filters, but it's not that much better. I don't get it because it was not like this in the beginning. could it be the mac? or the Elgato? or maybe the cables? sorry I know It's a long message, but maybe with writing more stuff you can understand better. (I really don't know much of computer)

can you provide some more details? what's siege? it seems like there's a capture card source involved. are you saying that the capture card feed is normal, but on entering a game on your console, OBS crashes? the best thing may be to post a log:

OBS Studio requires permissions from macOS to provide certain features. To grant them:

1. click on the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
2. enable each of the permissions using the buttons on the right-hand side

• (a) click on OK/Allow for the microphone and camera prompts
• (b) grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Preferences/Settings

Docks in OBS can be managed from the Docks menu in the main OBS window.

You can toggle docks on and off, or lock or unlock docks to prevent moving and editing, as well as add custom browser-based docks here.

You can also reset the UI from this menu to return your docks to their original state (Docks > Reset Docks).

you have a fair amount going on there for a base m1. you may just need to simplify your scenes (you could remove "macOS Screen small" for example, and scale an existing source instead, and you might have other unneeded macOS screen capture sources)

it's not ideal, but rendering the preview on macOS is very expensive. disabling it will certainly lead to a gain in performance (or even making it smaller)

GPU use by itself is not a good indicator of system load. mac GPUs downclock aggressively and increase utilization in order to save energy. the best indicator is just to do a recording or stream and check if you drop frames due to rendering or encoder lag

Hi, I hope you are doing very well. I have a problem with the OBS app since it won't let me stream from my MacBook since it disconnects me from the server contactally causing me to drop the stream, I emphasize that I have a good Internet since I performed a speedTest resulting in, Download: 95.29, Load: 97.52 and Latency: 14.00. In the app it appears to me that I have to go to "Settings -> Advanced" to correct the solution, but I do not know where the inconvenience is; in addition when I ping with the Wi-Fi network to me it gives me as a result 0 lost packages, but when I make a traceroute to the streaming servers it gave me as a result: there is a significant problem in the route to the streaming server. The jumps where you see "* * *" indicate that packets are being discarded or no response is received from those specific nodes. This can be indicative of network problems between your location and the server. The marks "! X" in the results also suggest that the packet was rejected, which could be due to network policy reasons or Firewall settings on the intermediate nodes. This can result in unstable connectivity or a total inability to connect to the target server.

This problem happened to several people a couple of years ago, but looking for the forum solutions on the web I have not been able to find the solution, this problem began to happen to me since the previous week.

I got my Elgato yesterday and tried streaming on Twitch. As soon as the stream starts, my CPU spikes to 60-70%, and the stream stutters. I tried setting the encoding preset to the lowest, but then the stream looks really bad. I’m wondering if there’s something I can adjust in the settings to make the stream at least somewhat decent without it stuttering.

I’m using a 2020 MacBook Pro with the following specs:

Processor: 1.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
Graphics card: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645 1536 MB

Hi, I'm having an issue with OBS 30.2.3 on Sequia 15.1 developer beta (24B5035e).

If I click on "Start Virtual Camera" a popup will display:

"The virtual camera is not installed.

Please allow OBS to install system software in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Security.

You may need to restart OBS if this message still appears afterward."

When I go into "Settings → Privacy & Security → Security." I have "App Store & Known Developers" selected and I see nothing related to OBS.

I have tried restarting OBS, uninstalling and re-installing, and restarting the computer.

Is there anyway to make a single button press (Elgato Streamdeck).... toggle the position of a source? Specifically toggling between two different XY positions? I can understand how to use Exeldro's "Move Source" filter to change the position... but then I need TWO separate filters... and there seems to be no way I can see to have a SINGLE toggle action between those two filters..... 🤔

I want to press a button and the source animates onto the screen..... and then press the SAME button, and the source animates off the screen.

And this is a scene used across all 6 of my main top level scenes. So it's a "sub-scene" which contains the source I want to animate.

Thanks, these are great ideas... actually didn't realize how powerful adv-ss is, so I might explore that more later. Right now BTW I just discovered that Elgato Stream Deck does have a toggle kinda function... called Multi Action Switch. It's been around for a while but somehow I never noticed it. (Probably only limitation with it is that is doesn't check the current condition of elements like adv-ss appears capable of.)

Hi, so I start recording a team that my kid plays on and that is being streamed by various media sources. I watch the game on my TV while I recorded it on my Macbook. At the end of the match, I stop the recording, remux it and about 2/3 of the way into the recording the screen is frozen and that's what appear for remaining 1/3 of the recording. These matches can be from 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 hrs in length.

macOS screen captures freezing up is something of a known issue. unfortunately the main workaround is to just monitor the source, and if you see it freeze, double click the source properties and restart it

Pleaaaaasse help. I dont know where else to turn. I just keep having the same 2 issues and I cant understand why. I am an audio guy, so i had to start from scratch learning video. I know im missing something. I run a 2 camera podcast and wanted to cut down on editing in post so im using my “Canon R50” into a camlink 4k. Then i use my iphone 14 pro as the second camera. (Iphone Pops up every time no problems) I have a m3 macbook and a Rodecaster pro 2 running through a thunderbolt 4 dock that everything gets plugged into. My cameras are set up for 4k 24FPS (im only RECORDING btw) im not even streaming yet! So after 2 mins of recording my canon camera starts “lagging” I guess would be the right word? Theres mad latency I move my hand and a second later u see it on the screen. But thw phone perfect no problems. So that #1 my camera has mad latency. And yes I tried the hooking it up with a GOOD uscb C cable thinderbolt 3 and 4. Nothing showed up.
#2 when I go back to watch it. I also notice that thw Audio is all choppy! I change my sample rates Im at 48hz and 320 but it sounds like there is some kind of Noise gate or something squashing all the audio. Im an audio engineer and im losing my mind bc I know its something so stupid. Its not mic minus. I muted all the other audios. Idk what going on. I actually switched to recording straight to the cameras, importing footage. Cutting it all color grading. Its just too much. I honestly can work around the audio, I mean I would love to know why that happens but I CAN fix that in post by using tje rodecasters on board recording. But what is going on with this camera. Ive tried so many things that I have ti just start from scratch. Please help ANYBODY lol

After the recent macOS update to 15.0, I’ve encountered an issue with volume control in OBS. I use SoundSource to control system audio levels, which works fine, but OBS always captures audio at maximum volume, ignoring the volume adjustments made through SoundSource.

Before the update, everything was working perfectly. I was wondering if this issue is known and if there’s any solution or a fix planned.

Hello everyone. I have recorded 200 live-streaming and regular-recorded videos for YouTube on OBS since last year, and I am a moderate user. Only have used OBS. no issues. But, then my 2021 computer crashed, a thousand steps later, I have a new computer as of today. I am using Mac Senoma 15, Silicon, downloaded OBS brand new from Firefox, and allowed all permissions. My iPhone (which is my camera) is usually connected by USB, and I cannot get the normal display on the Source video. I am seeing my entire screen, and it is live -I am looking at myself, but it looks a screen record from my phone Camera from the OBS app. I added my source camera under the normal box Scenes/Source that usually shows up in the display box...I added it to Mac OS screen capture- because it is the only thing that lets me choose from the device (my phone versus Computer FT option. I believe this was the setting before. I never changed it, so I can't remember. My cell phone is not recognizing the USB, and is making me download a new app. I am trying that right now. Anyone know what to do here? Everything else seems to be working fine. (oh, and when i screen record to do a test, it used to save on my desk top, now I cant find where it goes-if someone can help me with how to direct where to save on my computer). you're probably trying to hardware encode H264 at 5120x2880 resolution, which won't work because that hardware encoder only supports up to 4,000 in either dimension

you'll need to either lower your resolution or use the HEVC encoder instead

your phone should show up as a "video capture device" source option without any need for macOS screen capture, iphone apps, or anything else

if it is not showing up, make sure it's enabled in your iOS settings

ok, i updated my iphone to ios 17.7, under settings>general>AirPlay & Handoff.., I have enabled: 1) Auto as for airplay: ask, 2)Transfer to Home Pod, 2) Handoff, 3) Continuity Camera, 4) Airplay reciever, 5) Allow airplay for" everyone, and full access to OBS Camera. my OBS is updated to 30.2, it still showing all of my screen on my Camera OBS iphone app to my display scene on OBS lap top.i have restarted everthing. OBS Studio recordings can be found by selecting File > Show Recordings. The output path can be changed under Settings > Output.

and no, unfortunately continuity camera does not offer quite the same degree of customization. you can control the zoom and mode via the green camera icon in the menu bar

Hello, I am attempting to use OBS to record six monitors simultaneously. I'm wondering what would be the best method to do this while maintaining the best resolution possible. I have one scene, with six sources and my base (canvas) resolution set to 11520x1080. I will only be needing to record, not stream. I also noticed I can change the resolution to 11520x6480 to maintain a 16:9 Aspect ratio but lettering on the screens cannot be read in this resolution. Can someone point me in the right direction of a solution for what I'm trying to do?

Thanks for getting in touch with us. SoundSource on its own can't direct audio to another app, so how exactly is OBS getting the audio that SoundSource is controlling? Let me know a bit more about your setup here and we'll see what we might be able to do to help sort things out.

Issue- As soon as I open OBS the FPS max out to 60 immediately. I have tried to reinstall OBS multiple times and start as new/fresh without any of my scenes etc but no luck. can you explain more what you mean by the FPS maxes out to 60? the FPS of what? what is it before and what is expected?

Expected behavior is usually around 20-32 FPS. When this is maxed out it causes my stream to lag heavily like over 2 min. I'm hardwired and have the highest internet so I know it's not my service and it did this at another location with strong internet as well.

I have an hd60x and need to use it to screen grab images and video of a laptop setup for work. I am capturing an M2 MBA to an M2 MBP. usb-c to hdmi from MBA to card and then the usb cable from card to MBP. I get an error that states "invalid output resolution". I am hoping this can be fixed somehow. The MBA is not setup, I can get it to work on my old hd60s to a windows machine but that will not work for me all the time. Anything I can do?

I have a Mac running MacOS Catalina 10.15.7. I downloaded and installed OBS Studio 29.0.2 from the site. I connected and installed my video camera as a device, but do not have the blue screen displaying the video from the recorder. I used OBS to make some videos, I always had problems with the audio, it would play in the recordings but not in my headphones. now after some month I'm trying to use OBS again, I tried to reinstall it and for now it's working (the audio). the other problem I have it's with streaming, I wanna try make some streams on Youtube, it words but pretty bad, sometimes the audio cuts off and I can't hear anything in my headphones, the quality of the video it's not that great, but I tried to put the right setting so it'll work, if I put quality of the settings higher than the video turns bad. Also the colors are weird, it's darker and the red it's really red, I also tried to fix this with filters, but it's not that much better. I don't get it because it was not like this in the beginning. could it be the mac? or the Elgato? or maybe the cables? sorry I know It's a long message, but maybe with writing more stuff you can understand better. (I really don't know much of computer)

Hi, I am trying to get OBS to work with my EVGA XR1 Pro capture card on my new Macbook Pro M3 Max (Apple Silicon, 2024, Sonoma)

It already works on my old Mac Mini Server (Intel, late 2016, High Sierra) with an older version of OBS.

The hardware and cabling are all the same except my new Macbook only has USB-C ports, so I need a dongle* to use the USB-A.

Everything “seems” like it should work. The device passthrough works. I can add the device as a source, but the stage is just black. No error messages, just streaming a black screen.

I also tried it with an EVGA XR1 Lite. Same issue. Works on mac mini but not new macbook.

Any ideas?

Relatively new to streaming, I just use a regular MacBook Pro. Over the last few days, my twitch stream has disconnecting about 10 times while I’m live. This essentially breaks it up into footy of five different ministreams.

Even when I am streaming, occasionally I’ll get “error #3000” saying there is a problem with the encoder, but if I hit the refresh button, the stream pops right back. However, OBS says the stream is still live the whole time.

I’ve went live over 100 times, this has only happened about 4/5 times ever. Is it my internet connection? I have about 650 meg and no other devices connected while streaming.

Are you using Wi-Fi? If so, kill it and only use Ethernet.

that's probably worth testing to rule out poor wifi reception, but generally macs are just fine when streaming over wifi and it's pretty rare for it to actually cause issues, assuming your router is decent quality

Sorry, it gets stuck in a state between the two scenes. I can see both at the same time. I can’t turn off the stream without force quitting, and nothing else in OBS is clickable when it gets stuck like this. When I can see both at the same time, both scenes are frozen.

It just happened. The first url is the current log file. The one below is the previous one. The one below is the previous log file. I couldn't get the log file while it was frozen because nothing was clickable, so I'm not sure which one would be the correct one if I don't retrieve it until after I stop streaming

and are you also able to send a screenshot showing the entire OBS interface while it's frozen?

i don't see any very obvious possible causes from your logs

one long shot might be: you seem to have loopback in use as an audio monitoring device. there have been problems reported in macOS 15 with other audio software by the same folks. you may want to try uninstalling loopback and its system extension and seeing if that resolves the issue

OBS Studio 30+ running on macOS 13 (Ventura) and later can capture desktop and app audio using the macOS Audio Capture source.

Follow up question (it works btw), how do I prevent horrible lag when recording? I think I'm on default settings for everything and I'm only recording a Steam game (not streaming)
