You seem to be recording with a constant bit rate. Try switching to a recording quality preset.
For high-quality, no fuss recordings, use the recording quality presets in Simple Mode:
- In OBS Settings → Output, set the Output Mode to Simple
- In the Recording section, choose Indistinguishable Quality as the Recording Quality
- Set your Video Encoder to a hardware encoder, if available
tried that on like 75 out of 100. Still all the same results...(
No, a directly uploaded clip to Discord
Streamable videos are re-encoded upon upload, so they're not usable to me
sure just a sec
Thank you
I need to cut it first -- the file size is only 25MB max here...
@neon lily but man the clip itself in the original is all the same regarding sttuterring that happens...
Odd, our server is boosted
Anyway
Just out of interest, do you have VRR enabled on your PS5?
nope
Okay. So we're talking a fixed frame rate. Hmm.
exactly...
For help with Elgato products, please submit a ticket with them directly at https://help.elgato.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. They also have a community Discord server.
i'll try them, thanks anyway!
np
This looks like the same issue i used to have before turning the capture frame rate to 59.94
tried that already... no good 😦
you tested the recording with quick time player on M1 mac itself ?
how is elgato config looks like ?
i had mine set to "internal" on the edid
yeap, native player + VLC as well = same result
I've tried all 3 options inckuding "internal"
Can you send the snippet when you recorded in 59.94
by native you mean quicktime player ?
yeap
multiple weird things i noticed despite the file being recorded properly .. VLC never showed the video smooth, quicktime player does. When i uploaded the snippet to youtube, my Apple tv Youtube app showed stutter, later realized that the apple tv was configured to 1080p 50Hz and only when i switch it to 1080p 60Hz, i was able to see the video properly on Tv
so there are many caveats even validating the video if its correctly recorded or not. It took me an aweful amount of time to figure these things out.
My best guess it has something to do with an issue of Elgato and M1 working together, since most of the users I assume are on PCs...
Been there myself when i was testing Elgato HD60X with M3 Max Macbook Pro
so ultimately it worked for you after you put capture frame rate to 59.94, right?
yes.
were you also recording from a console? or different use case?
Recording from PS5. at 1440p60fps.
Also if you want to know what to do with https://github.com/obsproject/obs-studio/actions/runs/7619215021 .. click on artifacts .. click on "obs-studio-macos-arm64-cd9696db6" and use "Capture Card Device" source when you install the build. Use 59.94 as usual in both places on OBS config
sorry, i'm dubm here... I see them at the bottom, but can't click them...
you should login to the github with a user id perhaps. you can register.
Ok, yeah, you need to be signed up. But I found the same installer on my mac (same naming) meaning I'm running the same thing that I've just donloaded?
@boreal raven is there a chance you can share all your settings with a few screenshots?
p.s. you could PM me if it's more convinient
i PMed you already ..
crashes on start on M1
Hi, i want to know how to install the background removal plugin. I did all the instalation process but the plug in didn't appear on my obs
I'm just using OBS to record video from my macbook air, which has an hd camera. My camera is set at 1080p, but I'm told that my video is less than 720p when I send it off to my producer using an icloud link. Should I be changing an output setting? Thanks from a total newbie.
To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file from a fresh launch of OBS Studio containing an output session. Follow these instructions to upload a clean log file:
- Restart OBS Studio first!
- Start your stream/recording replicating any issues (meaning having any games/apps open and captured, etc.)
- Stop your stream/recording after 30 seconds or after the issue has occurred
- Click the Help menu → Log Files → Upload Current Log File
- Paste the URL into this Discord channel
- MP4/MOV Recording
- Non-Standard Aspect Ratio
Apple M2 (not in benchmark DB) / Apple Apple M2 (not in benchmark DB)
- Wrong YUV Color Range
- No Output Session
- Third-Party Plugins (1)
Apple M1 (not in benchmark DB) / Apple Apple M1 (not in benchmark DB)
How do I rectify?
OBS Settings -> Video. Ensure both fields say 1920x1080
According to this log, it has loaded correctly
Can you screenshot the filters list for the source whose background you are trying to remove?
When you click the + button
I just had to restart the OBS studio and the filter appeared! Thank you
I changed to mkv, recored video and remuxed. When I uplead it unto imovie add music and export, my only options are 720p & 540p
I recorded in flv and it worked. thanks
A crash log is required to investigate the cause of your issue. Please upload the most recent crash log.
- In Finder, click the Go menu
- Select Go To Folder, and type in
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ - Upload the file prefixed
OBS_with the most recent date (format is year-month-day)
yeap, give me a couple of minutes to reinstall
no rush
hmm that's unusual. that only occurs with that nightly build?
yeah, i mean with the "OG" stable built is all fine. I've tested that and reinstalled to be sure.
if you reset permissions that should be one way around that issue, though i'm not sure why it's happening
ignore these blurbs, but these steps should allow the nightly to launch
If OBS Studio reports that it does not have system permissions but they do show up in System Preferences/Settings, follow these steps to fully reset permissions for OBS Studio.
- Quit OBS Studio and System Preferences/Settings
- Open the Terminal app (located in
/Applications/Utilities) - Copy-paste this command then press Return:
sudo tccutil reset All com.obsproject.obs-studio - Type in your user password then press Return. Nothing will appear on screen while you do this.
- Open OBS Studio again, then set your permissions straight away in OBS the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
Also, make sure you have only one copy of OBS Studio installed in /Applications. Multiple copies of the application causes issues with properly setting permissions.
nope. Now, I have a message to run it either in a safe mode or normal. Both of them result in just app being closed and nothing happens. Even no notification about the crash or something = no report
can you verify that system settings->security and privacy->screen recording doesn't have OBS in the list? and if it is there, remove it?
no OBS there
this will take a minute, but it would be helpful. can you launch OBS in safe mode, and while it's hanging, gather a spindump?
🇮🇱 or 🇵🇸?
to get a spindump, open activity monitor (also in /applications/utilities), then search for and select OBS (while OBS is unresponsive)
then select the ... icon along the top bar and hit spindump
when it's done, it will pop up in finder, and you can drag the file in here
this is a macOS support channel for OBS, not really a venue for this sort of thing
no way) I mean it closes too fast to do that even with hot keys...
that sounds like OBS is still crashing
are you sure you aren't getting a problem report popup?
you may need to close other problem report popups that are already open
it sounded like OBS was becoming unresponsive after launching, rather than crashing. does it still appear in the dock after you select a startup option? or does it just close
it just closes. It started happening after I did Terminal "thing"
A crash log is required to investigate the cause of your issue. Please upload the most recent crash log.
- In Finder, click the Go menu
- Select Go To Folder, and type in
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ - Upload the file prefixed
OBS_with the most recent date (format is year-month-day)
hmmm, no new report...
@forest axle u think worth trying reinstalling and do a spindump thing?
if OBS is crashing, that won't be possible. i don't know why OBS is crashing but not generating a crash log, that's a macOS problem. maybe try restarting your machine and seeing if you get a crash log
sure
@forest axle yeah, after the restart reports started generating
feel free to paste in here
here you go
hmm
meaning?)
i'm looking at the code and trying to see what's going on
does it still crash if you change your audio input device in system settings->sound? also do you know if you responded to any permission prompts when launching OBS concerning the microphone?
- Yes -- changed several times the INPUT fir different devices and it still the same (no more reports again btw)
- Reg. microphone after I did a thing in Terminal you asked for there was the very first attempt to launch afterwards where "Allow microphone" something was asked. I allowed it. And that's it. No more requests about the mic
i don't know why this is happening, but i would recommend resetting permissions again (the terminal steps), then responding "don't allow" to the microphone prompt this time
at that point, OBS should launch
and then, assuming it does, i'd be very curious to see a log
!maclog
will try
it didn't (with denied mic)
are you getting a crash report?
are you positive you have closed all crash report popups in the background? and console.app is closed?
you should really be getting a report
i'll try to reproduce after restarting
@forest axle hmmm funny
- If i open it first after restarting it gives me no request for mic and generates report (this for example)
- If i do the Terminal thing, then it just startы to crash without the reports after first promt for mic
so it crashes after the mic prompt? and you did hit "don't allow"?
there are 2 different scenarios
@forest axle
I did hit "don't allow" as you advised before in 2nd scenario
but in that case -- no report generated
Just found a SNAFU I hadn't come across before on MacOS. Ran up OBS and there were no windows, clicking on "show all WIndows" in the dock produced a "No windows to show" message.
Looking at the log it ended with lots of frame buffer errors. After much head scratching I realised that the previous run had had OBS on a (now absent) second monitor.
The only way I could find to recover was quit, add a second monitor back. Restart and move the windows to the main monitor. However had I not been able to temporarily add back in that monitor I'm not sure how I could have recovered things.
can you try wiping your obs application support folder?
- close OBS
- in finder, hit command-shift-g, then paste in
~/Library/Application Support/and hit enter - scroll down to the
obs-studiofolder and rename itobs-studio_backupor similar - try opening OBS again
also what mac model are you on? which soc, etc?
13-inch, M1, 2020, Sonoma (14.2.1)
have this when launching, clicked Continue and everything crashed without report.
If trying to open again -- the report is available.
unfortunately i have no idea what is going on. i can't reproduce the issue with the same build
if OBS has no microphone permissions, i have no idea what it's even doing in coreaudio code
i can't reproduce this. can you give more information about your macOS and OBS version?
sorry, but what exactly?
i was replying to the other fellow
sorry mate
what is your audio input device, by the way? is it just your macbook microphone?
you mean available or the one that chosen as input?
HD60X is chosen
if you set it to your built-in microphone instead in system settings, does OBS still crash?
Hi! I downloaded blackhole in order to pipe speaker audio into my obs, however it's been coming out really quite and when I try to increase the volume on my MIDI it starts to echo really bad in my ear buds and in OBS, anyone know what's wrong?
I’ll try tomorrow morning man. I’ll come back to you. Appreciate the help and time u are spending!
Is it typical to have HDCP control whilst capturing a macOS screen?
no, that's probably an issue with the firmware for that capture device. i'd check if it's up to date
Hey y'all. Wondering if anyone has experience with 2-mic recording from a Focusrite Scarlett interface? Cant seem to get the second mic to pop up.
I also tried a workaround to just record L and R and switch those to Mono but the balance control is locked. This works fine in Audacity so I'm kind of ruling this down to an OBS issue. Naturally, i'm getting the proper audio visualizer on the Scarlett itself, as well as Focusrite control.
it's upto date
you'll need to inquire with avermedia. there's no reason display out on macs would be copy-protected like that
is there some other hardware known to work?
Hey guys can someone guide me to the link to the fourms for facebook comments
I a. wanting to know if there is a way that OBS can bring the comments from our facebook live stream into the OBS softweare where we can reply to comments directly through OBS rather tha having to open the we browser to do it
not well-experienced in capturing macos display out myself, sorry =/ i know people do it with off the shelf cards. in one other instance someone had that HDCP issue when capturing output with an avermedia card, and updating the card's firmware resolved it, which is why i suggested that. sorry i can't be of more help
No problem
my comment wasn't directed at you
but i don't know about facebook live comments either, sorry
hi everyone, has anyone else run into this error recently? my obs studios stopped working on my mac and i'm struggling.
that's not an error, that's just happening because obs crashes.
when you say obs stopped working, what happens exactly?
I was able to open it earlier today, and it closed just fine, and now I can’t open it. Doesn’t matter if I click safe mode or run normally.
And then I can’t uninstall because it says it’s running but doesn’t show in force quit or activity monitor. So I then have to restart, uninstall, reinstall and the cycle continues
Please manually upload your log file.
(Windows)
- Press WinKey+R to open the Run dialog
- Paste the following into the box and hit OK:
%APPDATA%\obs-studio\logs - Find the desired log file (usually the latest) and drag/drop it into this channel.
Linux logs: ~/.config/obs-studio/logs
macOS logs: ~/Library/Application Support/obs-studio/logs
- Safe Mode Enabled
- No Output Session
Apple M1 Max 10 Core 3200 MHz - OK! / Apple Apple M1 Max (not in benchmark DB)
What does any of that mean 😦
I don’t have any other workspaces
@iron yew try what's described in that message
okay, and if that doesn’t work?
we'll check again, but try it first
the safe mode box is not the issue
it's normal for it to be there if you force closed obs
okay! sorry i streamed for the first time two days ago and now i'm stressed i can't get back in 😦
any help y'all can provide is beyond appreciated
do you have any other ideas?
!settings
make sure obs is closed (force-close it if you need)
go there, delete the file named global.ini, try reopening obs
To find OBS Studio's settings files, look in the following OS-specific locations:
- Windows: Press Windows+R →
%APPDATA%\obs-studio - macOS: In Finder, press Shift-Cmd-G →
~/Library/Application Support/obs-studio - Linux:
~/.config/obs-studio
OMG @plucky zenith I OWE YOU MY LIFE. THANK YOU!
👍
Hello everyone! :)) Can anyone help me? Im completely new with both macOS and OBS.
I just got a HD60S+ to record from the nintendo switch and I have a Macbook pro M2. For some reason the video looks really slow no matter what I change. I have seen some videos on youtube and I guess this is a common problem, but I cant find a way to fix that. Does anyone had a problem like this before?
Thank you guys :))
Thats how it looks no matter what I change in settings.
@forest axle Hey man, here the spidump for the new built (https://github.com/obsproject/obs-studio/actions/runs/7648072315#artifacts)
OBS Latest (30.0.2) Ventura 13.6.3 (I can't use Sonoma yet due to it breaking some important apps due to known, but not yet fixed bugs.
streaming a switch usually requires a capture card to capture its video to be usable on a computer
Ohh thx
Hello ! Quick question : has anyone observed that nested scenes are very GPU costly on macOS ?
If I create a simple setup with a video, nested like 4 times, it uses 5% more of my M1 pro GPU (the output is still the exact same frame)
Doing the same on my Windows machine doesn't even change 1%
are nested draws known to be more optimized on Windows ?
you can't compare cpu usage because what's 1% on one system may be 5% on another
nesting that many times will definitely use quite some resources regardless of the os
you should figure out if you really need that much nesting
yeah, basically, every scene you nest, you're adding an additional composition step
if you just want a clone, just use the source clone plugin
that will likely use less resources than just nesting 4 layers deep, because there's no extra composition
that nesting was mostly for testing purpose, however I have a quite complex setup indeed and I have no other choice than having several nesting stages
groups are much less power hungry however, it's a shame we can't create groups of groups 🥹
yeeeeah, that wouldn't be a very good idea probably XD
groups are not the stablest on their own already
haven't SLOBS implemented a version of this ?
probably not a great point I'm making I know 😆
idk, never used streamlabs desktop myself
but like, groups work
they just sometimes have weird shit
you sir... ROCK! Thanks that helped me as well.
General OBS question: do having tons of Scenes SLOW down OBS in any way?
I mean, I was experimenting with having nested Scenes and so on.
Using scenes for different camera shots and another scene to collect all those.
depends mostly on what you have on those scenes.
Specifically, browser media and image sources will stay active even when they're not on the current scene, unless the relevant option is ticked in their settings.
Having a lot of them can significantly increase performance load
And what about Cameras? Video Input devices?
I also take pains to always marke "close if not showing" on the images and so on
on mac I'm not sure
I can´t hear my capture card
do you see the bars in the mixer for it moving?
There isn´t even one
no caputure card
!macpermissions
check you have granted the right permissions
OBS Studio requires permissions from macOS to provide certain features. To grant them:
1. click on the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
2. enable each of the permissions using the buttons on the right-hand side
- (a) click on OK/Allow for the microphone and camera prompts
- (b) grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Preferences/Settings
3. restart OBS Studio
For more information, see the macOS Permissions Guide
- Non-Standard Aspect Ratio
- macOS 12.7 (OK)
- No Output Session

Refer to OBS documentation or online tutorials for detailed guidance on setting up OBS for streaming.
Activate the virtual camera in OBS:
Locate and click on the "Start Virtual Camera" button in OBS.
This button is usually found in the bottom right corner of the OBS interface.
Activating the virtual camera will allow OBS to output its video feed as a separate camera source.
Open Tango.me in a web browser and start the stream:
Launch your preferred web browser and go to tango.me.
Log in to your Tango account.
Navigate to the streaming section by tapping on camera button, usually located in the right bottom corner. This will open Stream preview page where you can make some adjustments before starting the stream.
In the camera selection option, choose "OBS Virtual Camera" as the source for your stream.
Confirm your selection and adjust any additional stream settings as necessary.
Start your stream and ensure that the OBS virtual camera feed is being transmitted correctly.
That's it! You have successfully set up OBS and started streaming via OBS on Tango. Enjoy your live streaming experience! If you encounter any issues or need further assistance, please refer to the OBS documentation or contact Tango Customer Support.
Setup worked one time after fresh install and setup
Next next day I follow the steps and my live shows in browser "live" but I'm not being broadcast to the site
Removed OBS and all files and deleted Virtual Camera. Fresh install setup from scratch worked for one day then the next time I tried to stream....Same issue!
Tried to just remove the Virtual Camera and relaunch OBS but the same issue is happening
Is there a way to coax OBS to stream to an endpoint that isn't active yet so that it just spews UDP (RTSP) packets so that when the endpoint comes it'll just use the stream? I'm trying to use ffplay on a Raspberry Pi to display the stream and ffplay wants the source endpoint to be active.
does the site show your virtual camera? if it does then the problem has to do with the site
I've updated to the latest obs and my game audio sounds distorted can you help please?
hello guys just wanna know how can i install OBS Studio on my MACOS mojave 10.14.6 ?
and which version will support?
The currently-supported version of OBS Studio (30.0+) runs on macOS 11 (Big Sur) and higher on Intel and Apple Silicon.
Some features, such as the new macOS Screen Capture and macOS Audio Capture sources require macOS 13 (Ventura) or later.
For versions of OBS Studio compatible with prior versions of macOS, see the macOS Versions page.
hi, i have a problem with the capture of the screen of my phone in obs, the screen is visualized all green and flashing.
in the rare cases when i can see the screen shown correctly, it lags a lot and then proceeds to turn green again
does anyone know how to fix it??
hi guys , i want to know how to intall OBS studio on my macOS catalina 10.15.7 ? any help!
hi , I'm a beginner and I can't find the "hide obs windows" function (30.0.2) Mac M1. Can you help me? Thank you
that's only for Windows afaik

Oh, that's really a shame. I will try to find software that has this function. Thank you very much.
you don't need it though
just use the macos Screen Capture Source, select window
that way obs won't be captured
Thanks, it works with a source different from my screen (cam2 ). it's okay ! otherwise with Quicktime it's the same for the main screen. Another solution install obs on a PC 😁
macOS has the same capability to exclude things to avoid a hall of mirror effects, I believe its not wired up on macOS but is on Windows
"Display minus OBS" is perfectly possible
we have such a button
it's just in the capture properties, not the global settings
because Windows works different (arguably worse, for our use case) internally
ah, I see. Yeah I recall the windows one being set elsewhere in the UX
There it is, I was wrong!
Display Capture
"Hide OBS from capture"
works perfectly as expected 🙂
yeah iirc Windows handles this via an affinity setting on the host window instance, so OBS tells Windows "hide me from any captures"
hence why that is a "global" setting (you can't hide for one capture but not another)
thanks for this, trying to look into this more. would it be possible for you to get a log with verbose output in terminal? to do this
- make sure the nightly build of OBS is in the /Applications folder
- open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities
- paste in the following command and hit enter:
/Applications/OBS.app/Contents/MacOS/OBS --verbose
output will appear in the terminal up until OBS crashes or hangs. when you reach that point, can you copy all the output in the terminal window after the initial command and paste it here?
thanks for the help
Hey guys!
I have a question for you OBS pros.
I'm with a band and we're planning on having some sort of mobile solution to livestream multicam using an ATEM Pro ISO.
To run OBS, I'll need a laptop.
I really miss having a mac, and I think it's the best choice to have as a carry around music production thing, I've worked extensively on both Windows and MacOS to know MacOS is just better.
Now the question is, the last time I used OBS on the Mac, it was way limited compared to the Windows version... Couldn't do a bunch of things I needed on it.
But that was 5 years ago.
What's the state of the OSX OBS version now? Is it full featured now? For example does it take advantage of AV1 encoding yet?
Is a Macbook a safe purchase here or am I still stuck with a Windows laptop?
- for av1 afaik, not hardware encoder, there's not yet apple hardware av1 encoding. You can try software av1, but that's afaik quite performance-heavy.
- one thing that recently greatly improved on macos is capturing sound from the computer itself, as since macos 13, it does not require a third party anymore
I'm unsure what else might have been lacking 5 years ago, so if you have specifics ask away
Yeah that sound thing you just mentioned was the biggest one. I hated having to run secondary software to route the audio.
AV1 is apparently coming to M3 macs! The Pros have it
I'm asking about AV1 because, when touring, I have no idea how fast the connection will be in different places, especially UPLOAD, right.
AV1 should make it way easier to have a decent quality stream with a poor connection (unless I'm thinking about it wrong).
The sound thing, though, in this case, won't be a thing. Because the whole band will be running through a mixer and I'm taking signal from that into an interface that's connected to the laptop via USB. So OBS would be capturing the interface, not the mac itself's audio.
then it'll likely be added to obs too, tho I can't talk about the timeline of that
Av1 would indeed allow for much better visual quality when on a constrained bitrate. However, not much livestream service allow AV1, Youtube allows it for ingest, but reencodes it, and twitch barely started the beta to allow it.
Yeah, if you're mostly streaming band stuff, capturing audio from the computer will probably not be used much, but it can still be a QoL improvement
Yeah, I'd need it for like, the alerts for example.
Another part of it that was sorely lacking back then, is the PLUGINS.
But again, different idea. I was streaming gaming then, so I had a BUNCH of crap like instant replay, on-screen 8-ball etc etc etc
For this I barely need any plugins, really.
I would say that most "big" plugins do have macos releases now, but some might not
The one thing I'd like to have, but this steps outside OBS realm, is a bot that lets the audience change cameras / shots. On PC I use streamer.bot.
That'd be a streamer.bot conversation though. Not sure if they have a mac version.
you can use hevc hardware encoding which is comparable in bitrate performance to av1, but service support as pen said isn't really there outside of youtube, which re encodes. can certainly stream to youtube better than you would with 264 at least
if they don't, check out kruiz control, it deffo can do that too, and it's fully cross-platform
Oh yay! Awesome dude. Thank you so much, I think that's it (for now tee hee).
👍
anyway, there's nothing stopping you from doing that, a mac is a good choice for portable setups. the one thing you should take care to get right is the choice of camera and hub or IO to the mac. macos can be finicky about cameras, and you'll want to thoroughly test anything you want to use on the road to make sure it works as expected
using thunderbolt, usb3 connections where appropriate, etc
I'd be using an ATEM. So technically none of the cameras are going straight into the mac!
ATEM is BlackMagic, I think I'm safe on that part of it.
Specifically this one
gotcha. yeah, that should be fine then
And for now it's all GoPros. I need them TINY and able to place anywhere.
Not great in low light but... budget lol
call it an aesthetic choice, ez
Hahahaha YES
DM me if you guys want to check out the band (unless it's ok for me to put it in here, I'm careful about self promo these days lol)
Hey, all! I'm getting an error that I don't have enough disk space to continue recording. The output path to my external has over 790 GB and the laptop has over 40 GB available. Could anything else be causing this error?
is your external a network drive?
how can i download on this version. it says i dont need software updayes
The currently-supported version of OBS Studio (30.0+) runs on macOS 11 (Big Sur) and higher on Intel and Apple Silicon.
Some features, such as the new macOS Screen Capture and macOS Audio Capture sources require macOS 13 (Ventura) or later.

No. Just an external Lacie. It's always worked fine until I did the OBS update last week.
can you tell me what version of macOS you're on, and how the external is formatted?
there were changes to disk space calculations in 30.0.2 that are having some undesirable side effects, going down to 30.0.0 will solve the issue for the moment
network drives are a known regression, but haven't pinned down exactly what causes this issue for local drives
yeah i get that but is there a way i can download it??
yes?
just go to the guide linked
its not on there
scroll down
i clicked on catalinia
which one did you download
I'm on 12.7.2 and the drive was plug and play. I didn't really format it.
catalina
could you open disk utility.app (in /applications/utilities) and click on the external and take a screenshot?
and on that page, which one of the two macos installer did you download
just need to see what filesystem it's using
thanks
if you don't want to downgrade to 30.0.0, you could also just format that drive
i did the top one
oh yeah, .exe is for windows, not macos
ohh
get the x86_64.dmg
thanks g
👍
Was that for me? If so, how do I downgrade?
just download the mac dmg, arm64 if you're on apple silicon, x86_64 if you're on intel, and replace obs in applications
H265 is quite competitive and has far more content being distributed in HEVC than in AV1, seems sort of wild to jump to "AV1 or no good"
Handbrake recently picked up a quite performant CPU based AV1 encoder for Apple silicon configs. Its obviously not as good as dedicated hardware would be, but it does exist
ahh just got to this part! yeah thanks Yam exactly 🙂
Hello, for some plugins we need build OBS and then build that plugin? Any way to skip it? Im trying to build/install a plugin but cmake fails (mac OS SDK is too low).
which plugin

Hi, does anyone know some good settings for a 60 fps Roblox video on my Macbook?
Macbook Specs:
Macbook Pro 2017 15-inch
Intel Core i7
16 GB RAM
Radeon Pro 555
256 GB Storage
I'm currently using x264 encoder with 6500 bitrate CBR, 0 keyframe interval, superfast CPU preset and main profile. The video is around 40 fps but has low quality.
For high-quality, no fuss recordings on macOS:
Apple Silicon Macs: use the recording quality presets in Simple Mode:
- In OBS Settings → Output, set the Output Mode to Simple
- In the Recording section, choose Indistinguishable Quality as the Recording Quality
- Set your Video Encoder to "Hardware, H.264" (more compatible) or "Hardware, HEVC" (smaller file size).
Intel Macs: use these recommended recording settings. Note: you only use these settings for recording, not streaming.
Doesn't work it says encoder error.
Please provide the full text of the error message. Press Alt+PrtScr while the error window is selected to copy it to your clipboard, then paste it into this chat window.
An encoder error occurred while recording.
It doesn't show log files

please help.
it just happened, it was working perfectly fine yesterday.
a whole recording laggy now bruh
can you close roblox and see if the issue is still there?
yes
close roblox, make a new recording, and after you finish, upload the log again
- 89.4% Encoder Overload
- Non-Standard Aspect Ratio
- 0.1% Rendering Lag

that's with roblox completely closed?
no i recorded roblox
Closed Roblox, Closed Obs. Restarted them both and recording 30-sec.
please read what i'm telling you carefully
i need you to make a recording *with roblox closed*
no roblox
what do i record? the screen?
ok
ok i have it now

so, again, the roblox application was completely closed during this recording?
yep
can you tell me what applications are open?
sure
OBS and Google Chrome, but i opened chrome after i just send this link. So it couldnt have affected it in any way.
hmm
your resolution and fps are awfully high for h264 on the base m2. you're saying you had no issues with these settings the other day?
well, I was trying to fix the resolution because it was always either too big or small for youtube. Except when i do the reccomendeed amnt for youtube, It streches my screen and makes the game look fatter.
it sounds like you raised the resolution too high and that's what caused this issue
i don't know what your setup looks like exactly, but one way or another you'll need to make output (scaled) resolution smaller
if you want to not overload the encoder
kk ill try it
WAIT WAIT WAIT
YOU FIXED MY RESOLUTION PROBLEM, NOW ITLL FIT ON YT!!
but not all the problems..
oh nevermind, i forgot to restart obs.
Hi, We record pocast with 3 microphones. All of them are connected to soundbar where it shows that all of them are working. Soundbar is connected to my Mac with USB-C but only 2 of 3 mics are working. Any suggestions what to do to fix it?

hi so i’m new to streaming and will be streaming from my switch using a capture card. i was planning to get the macbook pro 2017 because that’s all i could afford and my question is, will that macbook run obs good when i stream? mind you, im only using it for obs when streaming nothing will be open but obs. here are the specs! hope someone can help me
7th Generation "Kaby Lake" 2.3 GHz Intel "Core i5" processor (7360U), with dual independent processor "cores" on a single silicon chip, 64 MB of eDRAM embedded on the processor die, and a 4 MB shared level 3 cache.
8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 Memory, 128GB Solid State Drive
Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640
Quick question: Is there any way to put a background on a text input? Thanks 🙂
will the text be changing size?
Erm it might be changing and being edited yeah
Some said make a background and then group it, that should work. I'll just manually change it if I edit the text, but shouldn't be often
so, you can use a color source behind the text source, but having it resize automatically to the size of the text is a bit complex
doable but complex
if you're ok with manually editing, then yeah
Ah okay yeah, it won't be changing often, so manual is probs easier. Ty for the help! 🙂
Hello. I have an intel iMac Pro (Vega 64) with and external eGPU (wx-9100). I see two Apple VT encoders, which one should I pick? First or second? Thanks a lot
what is the other one labeled?
Exactly the same
it's hard to say which one you should use since your setup is unusual and there isn't a lot of data out there around macOS dual gpu setups. i would test both and see which performs better
Ok. Thanks.
Hi all, this might not be possible but I thought I'd ask! I'm wanting to use OBS to make a zoom more professional and swap between cameras, desktop etc - i know I can set macros up to switch scenes and these work great when OBS is the main window thats open, however if I have Zoom open as the primary window no macro's work - is there a way to make OBS always look for them even if it's in the background? Thanks!
`hello obs says that its already active but it isn't so please can somebody help
it doesn't work and i can't come in

on obs its showing my face
but on discord its just a black screen
i just wanted to use the OBS camera on discord to uninvert my face but its not connecting to discord

does the OBS virtual camera work in other apps? facetime, quicktime, photo booth?
no its black too
i checked photo booth
i just downloaded OBS and i didnt really do anything else
just downloaded it and connected my macbook camera
and it popped up on discord and i thought it would work but its just a black screen
the issue might be the use of intel OBS on apple silicon. you should probably download the apple silicon version from https://obsproject.com/download, and replace the x86_64 version you currently have
try that first
yes, or replace it, either way
- macOS 13.5 (OK)

hmm, try restarting your computer
sometimes macOS has issues with the system extension
can you take a screenshot of the OBS window with the virtual camera on?
and you aren't seeing any error message whatsoever on starting the camera?
nope
i havent connected OBS to discord, do u know how to do that?
or is it already connected because on discord it shows OBS camera option and i preview it and its just a black screen
there isn't any connection that should need to happen
can you open terminal.app? it's located in /Applications/Utilities
then after it's open, can you type in the following, and then screenshot or copy paste what comes back?
systemextensionsctl list
Well, I have a problem with my live shows. They look terrible. I raise the quality and nothing is the same. If I put it in better quality, it looks perfect, but the live show is fatal. Super blurry.

i dont even want to stream or anything i just want the camera to show up
i just wanted to invert my face since discord inverts it and i hate the way i look inverted 😭
okok
i think that intel version from earlier might still be causing issues. so let's try this
- drag OBS from applications to the trash. you should see a prompt about removing extensions, go ahead and type your password
- reinstall OBS like before, dragging it from the dmg to the applications folder, making sure it's the apple silicon version.
- restart your computer one more time
well that works too
i went to output selcetion and for output option it was on scene
but i put macbook and its popping up now
was i supposed to do that ? 😭
oh
you probably had it outputting a blank scene before
i'd recommend just using program (default) for the output type
which should work as well
okay i put it
wait so the way i look on the discord camera right now is the way i'd look for real
or is it just going to invert back
i believe the view that discord shows you is inverted compared to how people viewing it will see it
alright thank uuuuu

hey all, i'm currently having a problem with my stream where my friend over discrod can be clearly heard but the game audio and I can't. I can rule out my microphone and capture card since both of those work when i'm recording, but when i'm livestreaming nothing seems to work
if you want your microphone to be heard, you should add your microphone as an audio input capture source. if you want your game audio and you're on macOS 13 or 14, you should add a macOS screen capture source for it, which includes audio
I did add my microphone as a capture source. The gameplay audio is through a capture card and I’ve got the audio added as a source there too. My apologies for not including this information previously
no worries. so both those audio sources appear in recordings but not on stream?
Yep
I’ve also discovered the mic audio is incredibly distorted on OBS, and nowhere else
So yeah
It’s a blue yeti mic, and I’m on the latest version of OBS if that helps. I’ve also made sure the hz (I can’t remember the exact term) is set to 48k on it

hello, im designing my new Starting Soon screen and i am just wondering, if i export these selected items and layer them in OBS, is there a way to apply simple "hover" and looped animation in OBS?
where can you force close i can't find it any where
Hi chat, when I record the output from discord (other people) there a slight, almost echoy vibrating kinda reverb. Anyone know how to fix it?
Noticed it was actually ok the other day
Use blackhole 2 btw
Wait sorry didnt notice #audio-support

OBS Studio requires permissions from macOS to provide certain features. To grant them:
1. click on the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions
2. enable each of the permissions using the buttons on the right-hand side
- (a) click on OK/Allow for the microphone and camera prompts
- (b) grant Screen Recording and Accessibility permissions in System Preferences/Settings
3. restart OBS Studio
For more information, see the macOS Permissions Guide

Can someone can help with this? my obs wont connect to twitch when i press start stream its just stuck on connecting but i wont get an error code or nothing. both obs and my mac are updated to the latest versions, i have checked my firewall settings, i have uninstalled and reinstalled, disconnect my account and reconnected it but nothing can work. please help!
hi there, sorry, i became busy earlier. can you also show your advanced audio properties window? you can find that by clicking the gears in the audio mixer in the main window; then screenshot the window that pops up
Not a problem considering my response time. One sec let me get to my computer to get it for you
alright well that explains some things. only track 1 goes to the stream, so for desktop audio and microphone, you'd want to make sure track 1 is checked
let me look at your log again
i dont see any obvious issues there. can you provide an example clip with the distortion you're hearing?
Yep. I’ll need a bit to get everything set up
I’ll upload a clip to YouTube and ping you with the link if that’s ok
sure. no rush. a past clip is fine too, anything that has the issue
Sounds good
so you're not gonna believe this, but it's now working
All I did was enable track 1 on the setup
I think that's literally all it was
genuinely, thank you for your help. if this happens again i'll have a recording saved and upload it
yeah, not sure why that would solve it, but glad to hear it's working! and yeah if you hit it just head back here, and no problem
anytime
Hey everyone! I'm trying to record a fullscreen game on a Parallels Windows VM using OBS on my Mac, but when I do the title bar of the Parallels window gets recorded too, even though this is invisible to me while I'm playing the game. I'm using macOS Screen Capture as my video source, and from what I understand that's also what the Screenshot app (shift+cmd+5) uses, but when I record through Screenshot this area renders completely black as I would expect it to. Here are some screenshots for clarity: the first is what OBS sees, the second is what I see.
What I'd really like is to have Screenshot's "record selected portion" functionality in OBS so I'm not recording this upper area at all. Is that possible, or does anyone know of another solution to this?
what version of macOS are you using?
Sonoma 14.2.1
and what type of macOS screen capture source?
i.e. window or application (or display)
Um well I'd love to tell you but OBS is currently not opening any context menus
Lemme restart
And let me also say that I was able to basically fix this by cropping the transform to remove 76 pixels at the top. (Should be 74 based on my screen size, so the extra 2 must be the border between the menu bar and the content)
Anyway fwiw in case there's a more elegant solution I'm using window capture; Display captured the menu bar and I the windiw wasn't in the list in Application capture
gotcha. you're on the right track using window capture, but yeah, there is a macOS-side bug in 14.2 affecting window capture that creates captures with dimensions that include the menu bar
i'm not sure if 14.3 is out yet but the word on the street is that it's fixed there
Oh that's good to hear
if you stay on 14.2 you'll just need to continue cropping
Oh it's out already
First time in my life I'm annoyed that System Settings didn't tell me about a new update
I'll update now otherwise I'll forget about this and when I finally do update my recordings will be messed up
👍 yeah, i haven't updated yet, but it should be fixed there, let us know if it isn't
Will do
Oh good my backup disk isn't connecting
Love running into one technical issue while trying to resolve another
@forest axle update is finally done, unfortunately nothing seems to have changed and I still need to crop it
that's disappointing. i had heard that that was fixed. guess apple failed to fix it
can you check if the behavior is present with other windows?
like safari or something else you can fullscreen
Ok let me see
I shoul've also checked others before I upgraded so I knew if it's specific to Parallels or not
I wouldn't be surprised if it is
Safari works fine without a crop, but then I would expect it do because it doesn't have a "hidden title bar" like Parallels does
I'll try Minecraft now
Minecraft also works fine without the offset (when using macOS fullscreen mode), and unlike Safari navigating to the top of the screen does show the title bar
So it must be that OBS doesn't play nice with Parallels' specific title bar implementation
it's not OBS, it's specifically the API that macOS screen capture uses
i.e., here's a fullscreen parallels window capture in 14.1 (before this stuff broke) with the current OBS
correct
no title bar silliness
er, ignore the OBS version, that's just a custom build from a working branch
I see you have an offset there, is that intended?
Bc with an offset Parallels would indeed look good
my canvas is just display resolution and the source has no transform or anything, that's just the size of the capture with a fullscreen window
that was just for demonstration
Ah ok
so basically the only thing that can be done is file a feedback with apple
which i would encourage you to do
Before I do I want to make sure I understand something
Is OBS Window capture intented to capture only the content of applications, or the title bar too?
Or title bar only when windowed
it captures the entire window
if something isn't fullscreen, that includes the title bar
Ok
Because it does make sense to me that the visually hidden Parallels title bar is part of the window
And I can capture it with shift+cmd+4 + space
So I'm not quite sure I would know what to say to Apple
can you screenshot your canvas with a fullscreen safari window capture?
yea
fullscreen firefox has a similar titlebar dropdown when you move the mouse to the top of the screen, so i'm curious what a fullscreen firefox capture looks like on 14.3
It looks about the same as Safari
Oh did you want me to move my mouse to the top, tab back and then screenshot?
Cause then it does show the title bar bc the app thinks it's still focused (usually)
sure, i'd be curious to see how that's handled
Yea you do get a bar in Firefox when you do that
You don't in Safari bc it doesn't show the normal title bar when you move to the top of the screen
alright, so yeah, you were right, seems like we're looking at a parallels-specific issue
assuming behavior across other apps is generally similar to the above
I mean the Parallels title bar has 4 buttons on the top left, they definitely needed to do something custom for that
And the font is all different and stuff
yeah it does have odd handling. but it also works fine in 14.1
So OBS would need to treat it as a special case
Idk why it worked previously
I just downloaded OBS yesterday so I wouldn't have noticed if it worked fine before
i would still recommend filing with apple, and just mention parallels and the custom title bar. in my experience parallels support is a complete black hole or i'd recommend letting them know too
i guess it's not a huge deal to crop
I mean I've sent Apple like 5 pieces of feedback over the past week
I don't really expect anything from them but I'm worried they'll cut me off completely if I submit anything I can't describe in great detail
And I don't know that they'll think "these 2 thire-party apps don't work well together" is a priority
I'd need to find a way it affects base macOS
I also don't really want to say "I was told that it used to work fine but can't confirm this myself" :p
that's fair enough on all accounts. this will affect all consumers of their API, not just OBS, but i would agree that there isn't necessarily enough information to conclude that it isn't just a pure parallels-side issue
they can be attentive to issues with third party apps though, and they can occasionally lurk around here and respond to issues related to this stuff
Hm well if I find a way to "repro this in vanilla" then I will submit something
Oh wait a minute
I see what you mean, the bar that shows up when I tab out of Firefox is a macOS thing that indicates that the app is being recorded
So yeah I see why you thought it was a macOS thing
so, in 14.2, window captures included a large black space above fullscreen windows, with a weird floating out of bounds title bar, across a wide array of applications
My guess is that Parallels is doing a bunch of stuff to add their own functionality and somewhere along the line the title bar gets considered "part of the window" even when hidden
yeah, for some reason or another
and i assumed that this was what you were hitting, when really it just looked similar but was this weird parallels thing
Oh
Yea I though there might be a misunderstanding
Anyway if I were to find this weird behavior in an app like Firefox ( one which doesn't do anything fancy with the fullscreen title bar) then I would say maybe a macOS bug
But rn it seems like a Parallels problem
Ig I might contact them in that case
Although I doubt it'll get fixed anytime soon
it could, say, affect anyone who subclasses nswindow with a custom title bar, but yeah, we don't have enough info to know. there is also the 3rd party application category of apple feedbacks for this sort of stuff
but either way
That's true, but I think Parallels would have more incentive to find out than Apple
you'd think. in my experience when i contact parallels about issues they respond by asking if they can remote desktop into my computer
but your mileage, of course, may vary :p
fair
i'll probably file at some point anyway since i end up capturing parallels from time to time
Ok hope you have fun getting spied on
Thanks for having this chat, it was interesting to dig into this even though I found the solution workaround almost immediately
haha, yeah, sorry for the runaround. but thank you for the information on 14.3, good to know. SCK (the underlying API) has been (a bit) unstable, so it's good to keep tabs on what's changing without breaking my current workflow by updating
And to think if they'd just allowed for recording computer audio in the Screenshot app I probably wouldn't have downloaded OBS at all
Hope they'll do that someday
yeah i know they made recent changes to quicktime screen recording, surprised they didnt add audio
Until then I'll just have one OBS scene for Parallels and another for everything else
Is there any way on mac obs to record only game sounds instead of all desktop sounds that can be done on windows?
To capture only audio from specific programs:
Windows: follow the Application Audio Capture Guide
macOS: follow the macOS Desktop Audio Capture Guide
how many kbps do i need for recording to an imac and in general get a nice crispy image? i managed to separately record 4 dslr camera's with capture cards + 1 4K screen in full resolution without anything lagging but at the moment I'm doing most on 10 000 kbps and 20 000 kbps
but is that enough for, for example youtube videos? It looks good so far but the movements are a bit vague, don't know if thats the frame rate or just the quality of the capture cards? It says 1080p at 60fps but idk if that means anything with cheaper ones. For the screen I now use a Elgato Camlink 4K which seems fine but also here the screen only outputs 4K at 30hz & 30fps so the movements are ok but not extremely perfect.
What ever kbps you record with, the moment its uploaded to youtube, its going to apply its own compression on the videos. I did record a game video @ 1440p60fps with 50000 kbps bitrate and uploaded to youtube, which looked decent. Also word on the street is that youtube does a great job compressing 1440p and upwards but it does a crappy job with 1080p. So it all depends on how much quality you capture and how much youtube compresses.
My camera all of a sudden is zoomed in and I have no idea how that happened. How can I change it back?
Hi, I have a problem with OBS.
Let me explain you, I use my iPhone camera to record TikTok/shorts format but the camera is not in portrait mode.
How to fix this? the iPhone is already portrait-oriented.
Since version 29.0.2 i'm having some problems with my setup and i can't update the app to a version after that. I use the continuity camera and with that version everything work really well, after that the app keeps freezing and the freeze extend to the whole OS because i can't even move the mouse. In the 30 version the problem is even more consistent. I'm using 29.0.2 but i don't know if anyone has reported that before or no. Sonoma 14.3, iphone 14 with continuity camera through USB, since at the same time i have one external monitor connected through airplay. That's my setup.
Hi, are you experiencing a problem similar to mine? are you also using your iPhone's camera in continuity mode?
Hello, I have a new lag problem this week, it always happens at the beginning of my live Twitch, for a few minutes big lags until it relaunches the session completely, never happened before this week, could you help me please ??
Hmm no, I use it in horizontal mode, so it doesn't look the same problem, but in every verson after that 29.0.2 the app freezes frequently and the overall OS too, i can't move the mouse for some seconds. With 29.0.2 i don't have any kind of trouble.
is the freeze actually dependent on continuity camera or does it happen without it entirely?
this is a macOS side issue, continuity camera just does not expose vertical resolutions, and auto-reorients when you try to rotate. only recourse here is feedback with apple
the best workaround is probably to keep your phone horizontal and manually crop the feed at the highest quality setting
I think it is dependent because because i only use it as my main camera. For instance yesterday i was using the latest version 30 and it started freezing and even without rebooting the machine, i've downloaded the 29.0.2 again and everything work well again. So for my tests, everything released after 29.0.2 doesn't work ok with continuity camera.
so if you don't have the camera source, and continuity camera isn't used, does OBS 30 freeze, or not?
Need to test that.
My camera all of a sudden is zoomed in and I have no idea how that happened. How can I change it back?
any help ? 🥹 I can send you the logs for the moments it crashes
- Max Audio Buffering
- 11.3% Dropped Frames
- 0.5% Rendering Lag
- 0.6% Encoder Overload

your settings look normal. unfortunately this is just a connection issue
!connection
If your stream is disconnecting or OBS Studio reports dropped frames, follow our Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide for details on how to reduce these issues.
It only happens at the beginning of the stream, and this since I updated OBS this week. My upload is at 600 I do debit tests before launching so that seems unlikely
it may not be a problem with your internet *speed*, but it's still a connection issue. it could be upstream, or with twitch itself (i've noticed other streams on twitch having connection disturbances lately), but in any case, it's not an OBS issue. may need to contact your ISP if it keeps occurring
that guide above is there for all these sorts of problems
Okay thanks, what is ISP ?
oh, internet service provider, i'm not sure what the abbreviation is in french
okay thank you, months ago you suggested than I uncheck the box : Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion" and I never had this issue again. On the blog you sent it says to check it. Should I try that ?
if you're still using the hardware encoder, i would not recommend that, since i'm not sure if the hardware encoders work properly with the dynamic bitrate option still
so what can I do? It's hard to manage
it's only happened on my last 3 lives, only at the start of the stream
Hello, I recently got a mic for recording and I realized that my computer ( The Mac Studio ) has a bit of a wierd layout with its ports. It doesn't have a mic port, it has only two USB-A ports, and a very excessive amount of thunderbolt ports. How should I connect my mic to the computer? Should I use a USB-C adapter, or would a thunderbolt work too?
Get a usb c dock, doesn't matter where you plug it in. Thunderbolts are also usb c
I just realized I meant USB-A, it only has two of those. I just found a thunderbolt adapter and it doesn't seem to connect, is this a mic problem? Or do I need a 3.5mm - USB-A adapter instead of a 3.5mm - Thunderbolt?
Hello, how can I install move plugins in obs on a mac?
click on the donload button, grab the macos one, install it
I already downloaded it but in what folder is it put?
in the zip file, grab the one for your architecture and run it
yeah, install the right one for your architecture
In which folder do I install or paste it?
double click on it?
thank
👍

Me too please I don’t know what to do 🥹
there isn't a solution to your issue besides troubleshooting your internet connection, per that guide, which probably includes talking to your internet provider. we can't really be of much more help in here with connection issues
what kind of capture device is it?
as in, make and model?
Like the small device? It’s on a USB capture card.
what make and model of usb capture card
like, what brand, and does it have model information, or do you have a purchase link? it needs to be identified
is the point
i don't even know if that thing properly supports audio, so it's probably an issue with just being cheap and incompatible. it looks like you have it added as an audio input capture source, and you've provided permissions
so it's just an issue with the device
It can support audio
So what happened that I did which made the audio not display sound was the fact I install the audio for streams
The audio capture extension
- my computer did a software update
Could that be why?
@forest axle
i don't know what audio capture extension you're talking about
In discord, in the voice + video settings, there is a screen share install extension which shares audio from application and games on the MacOS13
that sounds like rogue amoeba's ACE extension
i wouldn't anticipate that that would impact capture card audio at all
nor would i anticipate that a macOS update would impact the situation
but with capture cards that cheap, nothing is guaranteed to work well in the first place
This capture card isn’t new
I had it for a year
I don’t know what could be wrong now you are calling it inadequate device.
Where can I find this amoebas ace actension? And why is it so important?
Do you think it could be like a wiring issue?
Would resetting my Mac fix it?
this is what you just said you installed
no
probably not

problem was fixed on its own
I've been having difficulty streaming with OBS lately. It'll get really slow and the rainbow wheel appears whenever I try to do anything. I updated to 30 and it's still doing the same.
Yo! I'm unable to launch OBS at all. Does anyone know what the issue could be?
I'm on an M1 2020 Macbook Air running Sonoma 14.1.1
OBS has accessibility access, full disk access, and screen recording access.
I've used the "app cleaner" application to completely uninstall OBS and all related files, issue still persists on reinstallation.
I've tried running OBS both normally and in safe mode, no dice.
I've opened OBS with no issues countless times in the past, including yesterday. I have no idea what could have changed to prevent it from opening. I haven't made any major changes to anything that I'm aware of.
To be clear, it's hanging on startup, not crashing
Here's the most recent log

I have an issue, not game breaking, but definitely tedious. Every time I open up OBS, I have to 'reset' my audio and video devices. In other words, unselect them and re-select them to get them to work. In the attached log file, the Shure MV5 and Camlink are not found at startup and need to be toggled to something else and back again in order to work. In the attached screenshots the audio device is missing and the camera (Camlink) isn't found either. Is there anyway to avoid these tedious steps at every startup?

try deleting the obs-studio folder from you application support directory, then reinstall obs
think that may be what fixed it for me
I don't have OBS in the Application Support folder in my Library

Please can someone send me a link or something to download for version 27.2.4 (64 bit) For macOS please, my computer doesn't even support the most current ones on Steam T-T
Thank you for the suggestion. I ended up restarting and unistalling and reinstalling. Eventually it worked
Hello, if anyone is able to help im a bit inexperienced with streaming. I have been struggling with getting my OBS to stream without looking blurry. I only have a MacBookAir i have connected to my Elgato X. I know it is possible to attain a quality stream with my setup but I mistakenly messed with my settings in OBS and it has never functioned since.
I’m trying to record Nintendo switch games, and having some issues. Is major input delay a OBS issue or a capture card issue
To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file from a fresh launch of OBS Studio containing an output session. Follow these instructions to upload a clean log file:

I don't have to start a stream to have OBS bog my computer down to the point that it's not usable (and it's a high end newer computer). Log is attached. I was unable to save the log without closing OBS becaue of the issue being so bad.
Hello. I have my steaming set up through elgato HD60S. On my streaming pc, elgato game capture sees the capture card and is displaying properly. However, OBS Studio is not showing the capture card in video capture devices. What am I missing?
!macpermissions probably missing this
OBS Studio requires permissions from macOS to provide certain features.
All access was already granted/enabled.
On macOS, some older Elgato capture devices may not be supported or require workarounds to use with OBS Studio:
- Game Capture HD and HD60 are not compatible with Apple Silicon-based Macs. On Intel-based Macs, use the Elgato Game Capture app in full screen, then capture it with a macOS Screen Capture/Window Capture source
- HD 60S is not compatible with Apple Silicon-based Macs. On Intel-based Macs, use the OBS Link app
- HD 60S+, HD 60X, Cam Link are compatible with all Macs and can be captured with a Video Capture source. Make sure you are using a USB 3-compliant USB cable or adapter, connected directly to your Mac if possible
Weird. So why does it work in the elgato game capture then on the same device?
i dont know. you could just macos screen capture the game capture app window if that's an option, but its likely your only option
Yeah. I was playin around with that. Thanks!
hey guys, I'm on m3 max macbook pro and using apollo audio interface, mic is setup correctly (works in mac settings, ableton, logic) but does not pickup in the audio mixer in obs... seemingly no matter what i do. Im only able to use the macbook microphone. I've given the correct permissions, selected the correct microphone as the input, ive toggled all of the advanced audio settings nothing is working. Has anyone else had/overcome this issue? Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated
Hi there, which game captures work on OBS these days? I had an old elgato however it does recognise it. Which ones work? Cheers
Any that supports UVC, which is most modern capture devices
Older Elgato devices may be detected but only on Intel Macs
And some require the use of an additional app, Elgato Link, also only on Intel
But most devices sold in the last few years are UVC compliant

hi @everyone, i have a question about utilizing OBS as a virtual camera...
I am looking at getting an M3 Pro. While it would primarily be used for working remotely, it could also power my Streaming setup if I feed my audio/video into the laptop.
My idea is simple.
Feed my camera setup into my laptop with a second capture device
Feed audio into the laptop with an optical IN dongle
profit?```
This would replace my existing secondary PC, which has the following specs:
```Ryzen 3800x
8GB DDR4
2080 super```
----
Would taking the steps required to move what powers my Stream be worth the time and effort? I have no idea how well OBS is running on Mac, nor do I know if the encoders will be better or worse.
essentially, some of the time i use OBS as a virtual camera into Riverside or Streamyard i get very laggy video. it's not a consistent problem but i've tried reducing to the bitrate based on Riverside's FAQ and it's not completely alleviated the problem. are there ideal virtual camera settings i should be following?
hola
Do you have any recommendations mate? I use mac0S
Not really
I use an Elgato HD60S+ personally, but that's not a recommendation per se
All you need to do is look up their compatibility 🤷
Hello I have an issue with the video preview in OBS from my PlayStation 5. After a short time the image will go blurry.
Is this a sleep feature or timeout feature to save CPU processing?
Hello all. I just had a fantastic interview that looked great in OBS, but the OBS recording is jerky and terrible, and the livestream was garbage, full of dropouts, starts and stops, etc. None of the content is usable. I'm trying to figure out why OBS showed me a perfect visual live, but the stream and the recorded content are garbage.
To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file from a fresh launch of OBS Studio containing an output session. Follow these instructions to upload a clean log file:
- Restart OBS Studio first!
- Start your stream/recording replicating any issues (meaning having any games/apps open and captured, etc.)
https://obsproject.com/logs/uWmewGKLKjcr3Dcy Not sure if this is right, but this should be the log file for the actual incident. To replicate, I need to get two guests on Skype and livestream to my various channels.
- 93.6% Encoder Overload
- macOS 13.5 (OK)
- 0.2% Rendering Lag
- Third-Party Plugins (1)
Intel Xeon W-2140B @ 3.20GHz - OK! / Radeon Pro Vega 56 - OK!
My setup works fine previoulsy, the only variable was adding a Skype guest. However, I have used Skype with a guest before, no problem. This time, though, I had two Skype guests instead of one, but the Skype instance should be the same, right?
Thank you. The main variable is I used Skype this time. It was up and running during the first half, as I had my intervewee guess in the "Green room" to make sure they were ready to go. I do this show every week, without guests, and it's fine. Again, I ahve had Skype guests on before, and it was fine, but it's been several months.
i'm guessing that skype is doing its own encoding with the hardware encoder for the chat, and you inadvertently maxed out the hardware encoder's session or bandwidth limits
looks like your recordings actually had no encoder lag
but your stream certainly did
the best workaround is probably to use a software encoder (x264) for your stream encoder
and keep the hardware encoder settings only for the local recording
I'm afraid I have no idea what that means. Do you have any links to help me understand the difference between a software encoder and a hardward encoder? So the culprit was Skype, yes? Any idea if they have changed things in the past year or so to start using the hardward encoder when they did not before?
And is there any way to see this happening in real time? The OBS window looked great. I had no idea what was going on.
the preview window itself may have looked fine, but is not a reliable indicator in the case of encoder lag. you should have seen warnings along the bottom status bar in OBS warning you about encoder overload
Sorry if I'm being dense, but if the hardward encoder shows no lag, and the OBS window showed everythign was great, what am I missing?
Down here?
correct
the hardware encoder is a shared resource across the entire system. each session asks more of it. the local recording in OBS is one session. skype could be a lot of sessions, perhaps one per participant. the stream encoder is another session
What would those warnings have looked like? Red lights? I've never had an OBS issue before, the only issues I've had have been on the restream side
Is there any way for me to check those warnings in the log? Any way to see what I missed while live?
And thank you for your help.
encoder overloads should appear like this
you can also use the stats dock in docks->stats
it looks like your local recording was fine in both cases, so i'd check that to see if you can salvage whatever you need from it
according to your log, anyway
When I see a message like this, is there a basic body of knowledge I should possess to address that issue on the fly? The local recording is garbage. All laggy and with an echo from the Skype guests.
The recording apparently is what the viewers were seeing. I saw none of it, looked fine in real-time
the only thing you can do with a hardware encoder overload is quit other things that are using hardware encoding resources. in your case, again, i'd use the software encoder (x264), since it shouldn't overload given what you've said you're doing and your system
this could be indicative of other issues, since there isn't any lag in that recording according to your log. i'd recommend performing some tests with skype and the x264 for your stream encoder, then returning if you have issues with that recording or stream
You're a gem, thank you. Anything in particular I should be on the lookout for when I test, if I can see the same results?
you can check the log. when you stop a recording or stream, stats about dropped frames are recorded (e.g. one of your stream stats is here)
versus the local recording here
if you're in doubt, just post in here and someone will help (if they're free)
Thanks. For my own edification, though, you looked at the log and saw no issues indicative of the lagging and bad recording in said logs, correct>
the local recording did not lag or overload in a way that was recorded in the log. the stream output did. that doesn't mean that the recording had no issues, but it means you should probably retest without anything lagging before drawing any further conclusions
Forgive my igornace here: OBS records the stream output, not the local instance?
there are two output sessions simultaneously. the local recording saved to a file, and the stream output that goes to twitch or youtube or wherever you may be streaming
those are two separate encoder sessions
OBS records stats about both
it doesn't 'record stream output'. stream output is transmitted and that's all
I assumed I was recording the local. Apparently I was not, as the recording matches what people told me the stream was like. Is that a preference I can change? If I at least had the local, I'd ahve something salvagable.
your local recording is guaranteed different from the stream output based on that log
i can't say why your local recording had issues at the moment. again, i'd recommend re-testing incorporating feedback. but you were creating a local recording normally that is separate from the stream
I recorded from OBS, using the OBS "record" button. The recording I ahve shows lag and the slapback echo on the Skype guests. I will test, of course, but I'm lost as to why the local has those issues
the echo is something that can probably be solved
To clarify, I recorded with OBS, then used "remux" to change the recording from .mkv
Agreed, I have had that issue in the past.
the lag issue, again, we would want another clean recording/stream first. if your hardware encoder is overloaded it can have second order effects on applications that are using it
and if those applications are then being recorded, i.e. skype, then pinpointing the source is difficult
Thank you so much. I'll schedule up a test stream with the same elements present and see what I can find. I'm not sure what variables I am controling for or looking for, but I'll get cracking.
sounds good. for the echo, i would recommend setting things up as you would for an actual stream, and then with skype making sound as it would, scrolling through your entire audio mixer and looking for multiples of the audio. usually it is that simple
I have a fan base that will have a blast participating as I mess with variables,
since you have a fair amount of audio sources that's probably the best course
Understood. I have two audio sources. Imma get some sleep, I appreciate you.
I'm so sorry, I was stressed out and said "skype" instead of "zoom," which I was using. Are there known issues with Zoom, or is it the same issue?
same procedure, nothing special about zoom
Rock on, thank you
@forest axle THANK YOU BRO
I’m having a similar problem recording (not streaming) on Riverside.
I have a 2015 macbook pro 15 inch and I use a cheap Papeaso capture card which is decent for the price. I use VDO.Ninja to send the video to my main macbook up in the press box via ethernet. I use OBS virtual cam as I need to as the capture card needs some configuring in the presets like the input range set to ful and rec color to 709 over 601 otherwise the ice from the lights in the hockey game looks washed out and I use virtual cam to use it in VDO.Ninja, but i suffer major lag from thermal throttle and when I use virtualcam it uses up to 40% CPU.
@forest axle I’m using the x264 software encoder. Bitrate at 3000. 1080p 24fps to match Riverside’s platform specs. I’ve closed all other apps and made sure I have 6+ gb free of RAM on my M1 MacBook Pro. Video looks fine through OBS but when I virtual camera into Riverside I get video lag inconsistently. Is it the frame rate? I read a link you posted above about GPU usage. Something else I can do on my computer to guarantee better results?
I dont get lag on my virtualcam im on a 2015 intel macbook pro 15 inch but it does use a lot of CPU
which im trying to find out why
hmmm so it's probably not the computer itself then huh?
it's intermitten too! time of day also doesn't seem to matter
like, should i be restarting the computer before each recording?
and opening nothing???
where can i see how much CPU OBS is using?
activity monitor
sorry, i'm a bit dense with this stuff. where's that?
yes
that app tells u how much resources ur using or whats running
basically windows task manager for mac
wow, just opened it up. using 35% right now and it's not even keying out my background
i use a green screen for my bg and Riverside tech/FAQ says to use OBS...which is great, if it works
dialed in the "right" settings and i'm getting crushed. you think going lower than 3000 bitrate is the next best thing?
3000 bitrate is an average bitrate for an M1
should handle it easily
I stream with a 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch at 3000 does the job
yea their support said between 3000-5000. and it's still dodgy
framerate
24
the virtual camera has a fix already committed addressing CPU use that will be in the next OBS release
yea but that's what Riverside's videos default to. so i figured matching made sense
awesome
bitrate doesn't affect the virtual camera output though
if you're streaming to a site by providing it a virtual camera, then the bitrate settings should exist on that site's settings
yea, their FAQ/tech support said 3k-5k
it's lagged on both RIverside and Streamyard for what it's worth
i've never used one of those virtual camera streaming sites
but the point is, your OBS bitrate settings have no effect there
ok, good to know
are there ideal virtual camera settings i should be using then?
independent of what they say?
i think the OBS virtual camera currently runs at 1080p60 no matter what
in the newer version
even though i've set it to 24NTSC?
sec
it's complicated. that will send 24 frames per second, but internally, the camera still uses 60fps to advertise itself to other applications. i can't really say what's causing issues on your platform though
and you don't think that has anything to do with the lag then? the 60fps output?
nor would changing my FPS?...
i just don't know, since i don't know how that platform works
you could try going down to 720p and seeing if that helps
sure, but if it's happening on Riverside and Streamyard, two different platforms see issue taking in the OBS virtual cam
is there documentation somewhere about how riverside wants you to use OBS that you can link?
or whatever platform
but anyway @scenic cedar in your case just be on the lookout, the next OBS update will address CPU use and should fix things for you
looking for it right now actually. one second please.
here's some of it
one thing i should add is that i'm not using a wireless webcam so i'm not pushing my audio through OBS
you'll see it says to make sure OBS's framerate is the same as my studio which is 24fps. you'll notice i cannot change that in my Riverside settings.
however, when in preview -- before entering the studio -- it shows 60fps. their tech support said that that's what my webcam is "capable of" but not necessarily what i'm recording in...
sounds good no rush but when do u think next release is set for
i have a goofy workaround until then I needed these any i got a dummy HDMI that gives you a fake display and I just put a fullscreen preview in OBS to that fake screen and VDO.ninja screenshare that
i do not know. i know the goal is soon, but i can't offer anything specific
it could just be your connection to their servers not being fast enough. in any case, i don't think there's anything else you can do on the OBS end to improve things
no problem but my silly but genius work around only uses 5-10% CPU meaning I can dedicate the power to the important VDO.ninja source
what's an optimal upload speed then? over 10mbps?
definitely
alright, i'll speedtest it tomorrow. any other bugaboos to look out for? do you think switching to 30fps is a good idea?
it might be, but it's hard to say without knowing how their platform works. the only way to know is to test it
alright. i'll sort that tomorrow. by their admission 1080p should be ok. i will not go down to 720p (can't).
thanks for your help this evening. hopefully i don't have to come back with a part 2!
i have a mac book pro whats the best recoding setting to go with for youtube
