Mkv has timestamps issues that I'm not qualified to explain, mp4 doesnt have those issues, but is not crash-safe. Fragmented mp4 is is mp4 but crash-safe

since i might not be online by the time you send a log @warped jay , here's what you should do. you should replace your roblox capturing source with a macOS Screen Capture (not Window or Display capture), but this is only available on mac os 13+

this would let you show only roblox rather than your whole desktop. that means even if you switch to obs, the stream won't show it

Hello! Since the 14.0 update [i think], its impossible to record my mic because it feels like an endless repeat. Im not sure whats going on wrong.

For example, you can see the Desktop audio is not moving, only the mic, yet it repeats back to the point it causes this endless repeat, like if you put two phones on the same call together. I suspect it may be the screen sharing thats causing that echo introduces in Mac 14

set your "mic/aux" audio source to "monitor off". at some point, you set it to "monitor and output," which makes it come through your speakers

you can do that by clicking the gears in the audio mixer, or the three dots next to the audio source and going to the advanced audio properties

also, it's unnecessary to record onto all six audio tracks at once, you can uncheck most of those boxes save for track 1 just kidding, this isnt relevant, this menu doesn't actually mean you're outputting to all 6

if your macos screen capture is of the 'display capture' type, it should be capturing all desktop audio. if it's of the 'window capture' or 'application capture' type, it will only capture the audio of the specific program that's selected

I downloaded "SOURCE RECORD" plugin to be able to record multiple screen shares.

I have found source record to be quite unreliable sadly, but generally it's because you're probably overloading the encoder with too many simultaneous hi resolution inputs. What are your settings?

No, not really sadly, I just record in different sessions or often, don't bother for speed of editing anyway. One day I will try and get it to work, but the quality compromise might be too much anyway

I just said. I record different sources in different sessions, or just do it all in one output source. Which makes it easier to edit anyway.

Your other option is to keep tweaking source record, but you'll probably find the quality has to be so low, it's not worth it.

Or you have different devices for each input, but that's not something i've ever tried.

Hey folks, I'm new to OBS and streaming my PS5 through an Elgato HD60X. Managed to sort out the dark colors by switching to HDR. Now, the OBS preview window looks spot on, but the recording itself is still a tad darker. Oddly, the filter preview window actually shows what's getting recorded, not the main preview. Confused? Yeah, me too. Here's a pic to clarify. Any help is much appreciated, and if you need more info, just ask!

I just installed Streamlabs Desktop after having installed OBS last week to stream events from a lecture tour. OBS is blurring the background of all my camera images, like a blur filter, with no filter set. It will also blur the foreground but not as often. Anyway I switched to Streamlabs and found that the background no longer gets bllurred. BUT I need NDI input and the NDI option does not show up in the input options. See screen shot. I've rebooted, I've reinstalled NDI tools. NDI input worked in OBS. I saw 2 comments earlier this year about NDI option disappearing for other users. But no one addressed the question. Can someone help?

Perhaps someone can explain why OBS Project blurs my camera images with no filter applied in the preview or program window. That's the only reason I installed Streamlabs. Video is fine on any other software, and it happens on any webcam input.

Switching your canvas to HDR will not fix dark output, instead an SDR picture will lose contrast because its luminance is limited compared to HDR (it will be ‘grayed out’) and on macOS it will be tonemapped back to SDR in the preview.

The HD60x automatically tone maps HDR input so the preview in the property window will always be SDR on macOS.

If you are actually attempting to capture HDR input, you need to add a filter to the input source and tweak gamma a bit, the HD60x’ tone mapping tends to darken the output somewhat.

As such you’ll never get an HDR picture from the card (because macOS webcam APIs don’t seem to support HDR yet and devices like the HD60x effectively just present themselves as webcams).

The actual preview window is how I want my recordings to look, it’s as close to the tv image that I have managed to get

Iirc the property preview shows you what the source delivers, but the main preview shows what you would record and OBS can and will tonemap a source image to the final output

At least I hope it does because automatically tonemapping the property preview would be inaccurate 😅

What you need to consider is:

• Output colour format captured by the card (SDR vs HDR, video range)
• Input colour format provided by the card (in this case SDR with automatic tonemapping)
• Input colour format set up by the source (should by YUV or some NV12 variant with limited video range)
• Colour format of your output (sRGB, NV12, P010, P016, video range)
• And finally the little nugget that the main preview on macOS will always be tonemapped to SDR by OBS because we weren't able to get Qt and OpenGL to provide proper HDR output on macOS

Okay, I’m kinda new to this so there’s a lot in there that I don’t really understand but I’ll try and read up on it. I’m not sure if you have explained why the 2 preview windrows are different when there is no filters applied? Surely the information it gets from the capture card is identical? So the output to both preview windows should be the same? If the MacBook is seeing the Elgato as a webcam, and therefore doesn’t understand HDR input, do you think a work around would be just to play and capture everything in SDR? Like turn off HDR on the PS5?

the elgato device automatically converts HDR to SDR, but as I mentioned above it has the tendency to darken the image a bit

but the gist is that at least as far as the Elgato card is concerned you don't need to switch OBS on your mac to HDR to capture HDR stuff from your PS5, because the HD60X is already delivering it as SDR (it has no other choice due to macOS limits as I explained above)

alternatively you can disable HDR on your PS5, in that case the signal should be passed through without tonemapping straight into OBS on your mac

alright and I just checked, the preview in the properties of a source always represent the actual input - so if your canvas is set to HDR but your source is SDR, then the property preview will accurately show the SDR input, but the canvas shows the same SDR input converted into HDR

SDR to HDR without adjustments will make the image look "washed out" so it will be brighter, but the preview in the properties windows shows you the actual SDR colours

I dunno if there are plugins that allow you to record a source directly, but without additional tools you would have to right click the source and select "Resize Output (source size)"

be aware that some encoders might complain if the width and height are not proper multiples of 2 or 4

in that case you either need to manually adjust the output size ever so slightly and then make the source fit the output (which will mean interpolation, the result is not pixel perfect anymore) or live with minor black bars around it

OK I think I found a solution. I set the recording quality to lossless quality, tremendously large file size. It seemed to fix the fps issues I had, but now my file size will be a lot bigger. I’ll just have to be a bit careful for how long I record. Thanks for your help!

It's the first architecture change i've ever dealt with on Apple - switched over to Macs since 2008 and they were always Intel processors from that point. Now that I have stability, i'm taking a small break from testing stuff, but will definitely let you know once that phase is over. 😉

Hi there! I'd love some help with my audio issue. Apparently you can't capture audio from a window if you have a Mac version 13 or less. None of the tutorials I found online have helped. I'm try to do a YouTube livestream and capture the AUDIO from Zoom along with the video of Zoom. Hello guys! I have been streaming on OBS on my mac M2 for MONTHS without any lag or any trouble, but since Sunday every time I touch something on my mac, discord or want to scroll my chat Twitch I get this message 'Encoding overloaded consider turning down video settings or using a faster encoding preset' and my stream starts to lag SO MUCH I end up frozen... Do you have any idea where the problem could come from? 😭

It's hard for me to give specific instructions, as this is digging into technical details, but if you look at the "% CPU" column and see if anything seems very high, i.e., maybe 90% plus. A modern mac should be able to cope, but occasionally something in the background might be hogging the CPU.

You can also sort the comumn by clicking the header.

your encoder settings look fairly normal. i am guessing that this is an issue with dynamic bitrate not getting along with the h264 hardware encoder

under settings->advanced->network, i would uncheck 'dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion'

if you are having connection issues, this might mean you will drop frames instead of your stream adapting

an alternate resolution would be to use x264 instead of the hardware encoder

@pearl yacht have you ever heard of dynamic bitrate not getting along with the vt hardware encoder?

user has fairly normal settings, 720p60 cbr, but lots of encoder lag with frequent encoder settings changes

I would expect dynamic bitrate changes to be more or less incompatible with VT

that's what VBR is for

as far as i can tell from your log, this isn't the case, and the encoder lag occurs when your system detects network issues and the dynamic bitrate feature of OBS is trying to modify the hardware encoder bitrate

even if you have good connection speeds, transient connection issues are always possible

unless you can reproduce the issue again and show us another log that shows the issue happening under different circumstances, that's all we can conclude

if that's the case, maybe the dynamic bitrate option should be disabled when using VT. from reading that user's log it seems like it's just grinding the encoder to a halt

in the grand scheme of things, it isn't overloading that much though

II am brand new to OBS. I have a 2017 Macbook Pro laptop. I just bought Blue Yeti Mike to narrate audiobooks. Just recorded a quick test. How do I play my recordings back through the Yeti. Right now, I can record fine but when I play the recordings back it plays through my internal macbook speaker instead of through the Yeti.

i think this is the dynamic bitrate issue, it looks like this corresponds to the first log you linked. now that you have disabled dynamic bitrate, i would be surprised if this happens again, at least with encoder lag specifically

can you link the sunday vod lag? that one doesn't have any dynamic bitrate but still has encoder lag

thanks. i don't think we have logs for this period specifically. from the way the issue is presenting it does look similar to the first one with the dynamic bitrate issue though. without the corresponding log for the lag that actually shows something different from that issue, we can't really conclude that it's different from being caused by dynamic bitrate

my recommendation would be to try streaming without dynamic bitrate, and if the issue occurs again, be sure to save the log from the session and return, as that will give us more to go on. at this stage i think that is your main issue.

also, you mentioned an ethernet to usb c adapter. in your first log you *did* have a connection issue which ended up leading to encoder lag. so i'd definitely recommend getting that sorted out as even if your encoder issues are fixed, you don't want to be dropping frames due to network issues. also, if your wifi connection is good, there is also generally nothing wrong with streaming from wifi on macOS as well

yes... both the built in mic and a different mic that I plugged in worked. It's such a mystery! We'll be using a different mic for the time being but I'd love to figure out the issue if possible.

1. issue occurs when it's added as an audio input capture source, or as an audio device
2. the microphone is working in other applications that aren't OBS
3. other microphones work fine in OBS

if the input comes in from any channel above that, it will not show up

If OBS Studio reports that it does not have system permissions but they do show up in System Preferences/Settings, follow these steps to fully reset permissions for OBS Studio.

1. Quit OBS Studio and System Preferences/Settings
2. Open the Terminal app (located in /Applications/Utilities)
3. Copy-paste this command then press Return: sudo tccutil reset All com.obsproject.obs-studio
4. Type in your user password then press Return. Nothing will appear on screen while you do this.
5. Open OBS Studio again, then set your permissions straight away in OBS the OBS Studio menu → Review App Permissions

Also, make sure you have only one copy of OBS Studio installed in /Applications. Multiple copies of the application causes issues with properly setting permissions.

Hi i need help!! First off, I'm trying to connect my nintendo switch to my imac. I bought a capture device (the reviews were very good), connected it to the HDMI cable in my switch and into the capture device, then into my imac. I also made sure that the AC adapter was plugged in. My switch dock shows the green light, meaning the switch is working perfectly fine and is turned on. In OBS, I added in sources the capture device, double checked everything, but it shows as a black screen! I made sure in settings I allowed OBS to screen record and screen record audio, I reset OBS many times, but it still wont show the switch display. I also tested if it will record just my computer display, and that worked-- so why isn't it showing up when I did everything right (i think--)??

I'd like to peanut-gallery-add here that it did work for me (H264 Hardware and H264 Software both showed up as options, H264 hardware worked pretty well for me) for the year and a half i streamed with my 2019 intel iMac, for reasons i'm not sure we ever understood. 😉

yeah, the option was disabled i believe in OBS 29, because it wasn't very stable and streaming services do not like VBR

it stopped working in obs 29.x for me, and i mentioned it in this channel, and then your community helped me get it working (i tested a beta build of it and it was "fixed" in the next version) - but yeah, despite it "saying CBR", it was definitely variable on my intel, it fluctuated anywhere from 2000 to 9000 despite what i'd set it at, makes sense.

but it's all in the past now, m1 max runs circles around the intel 🙂

sure...a couple other things to note if you need advanced mode:

you'll need to manually set your bitrate value under "encoder settings". for 900p60 fps, you'll probably want this around 10,000 as a starting point. you should also specify the keyframe interval, so pick i.e. 2 instead of 0

you can definitely play around with the options if you are interested. HEVC offers more efficient compression than H264, but not everything can play it back and editor support isn't as widespread. i also don't know anything about the quality of the hevc encoder on intel (when compared to apple silicon)

Could you elaborate "support" here? Do you mean "gets shown as an option" or "actually works when being set and the resulting file has a constant bitrate"?

Hello Im seeking some help on screen recording.
I had an important video call that needed recording so I decided to use OBS, with then Source being the macOS screen.

I tested everything, everything that needed to be recorded was recorded.
then I just waited until the time of the video call.
but the other side called earlier than scheduled, so without being able to check the settings. I just started recording.

Afterwards I checked the recorded video (under 3mins in length) to see that the desktop was "frozen" (the time on the desktop in the recording was 30mins earlier than the actual video call time) and there was also no audio.

I guess the source had frozen after my mac went to sleep during the waiting time?

Is there any way that any of the video call itself would actually hv been captured in the video? (file size ard 35mb)

• remove the folder for Logitech's OBS plugin.
• You may need to disable the plugin in Logitech's software to prevent it from being reinstalled automatically. To do this in G Hub, go to the "OBS" integration under the menu->Games and Applications->Integrations.

For high-quality, no fuss recordings, use the recording quality presets in Simple Mode:

1. In OBS Settings → Output, set the Output Mode to Simple
2. In the Recording section, choose Indistinguishable Quality as the Recording Quality

Please run the OBS auto-configuration tool. To use the auto-config, click on the Tools menu in OBS, select Auto-Configuration Wizard, and then just follow the on-screen directions. You can use this tool to get a set baseline settings for your hardware, and adjust as necessary from there.

I play drums and I'm not able to get up and go to my comp to turn it off. I control everything thru my stream deck.

so that would be doable with something like that. The idea is that the stream deck can send a custom websocket message and advss, upon recieving that message will pause/unpause the macro that does the switching.
That being said, I don't personally have a streamdeck and I don't know much about them, so I can't tell you how to get the streamdeck to send a websocket message, nor what would be the syntax to match it in adv-ss. I just know it's doable and that people are using it like that.

1/99 fps = one frame every minute and a half, so it actually waits a minute and a half before doing anyting

obs is kinda not meant to run at those fps

Ok so I think I finally figured out the advanced scene switcher in OBS but now I'm trying to find a way to interrupt or start/stop it from a EL GATO STREAM DECK. I'm also wondering if it would be easier to try and create a multi-action loop on the stream deck itself instead of using advanced scene switcher altogether. I dunno. If anybody can assist, that'd be great. I know stream deck isn't OBS responsibility but you get the idea. I just have 2 cameras I want on a timed loop until I stop it or whatever from my stream deck.

Hello there. I'm having an issue with OBS and I'm not sure how to resolve it.
I have a macbook M1, and an Elgato HD60 X capture card. I'm trying to capture PS5 gameplay, and screen share it into a discord call.
I've figured out how to create a scene which displays the captured video. The scene also contains the captured audio. I can create a preview window in which the video is played, and the game audio plays through my laptop's speakers.
However, when I try to screen share, my discord friends can only see the game video, the audio is missing. Not sure how to fix this.

I've searched online, and most tutorials talk about using OBS to stream into twitch or other streaming sites. I just want to screenshare into discord. Is there documentation for this?

Not if it is actively being captured by OBS. Capture cards can only be hooked by one device at a time.
So if Elgato Capture Utility hooks it, then OBS cannot capture it.
If OBS hooks it, then Elgato Capture Utility can't. Pass through is a thing that you can see as it is captured, but not in two different programs at the same time.

I found my problem. It was discord... I hadn't set up the ACE extension properly, so discord was unable to capture desktop sound from anything, not just OBS.

Hey everyone I got a bit of a weird problems and I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong in this instance.

I’m currently streaming using an Elgato card and Xbox which is fine. The rouble I’m having is my chat audio being out of sync with my webcam.

Currently I’m using a discord account on my laptop separate from my one on Xbox in order to capture my voice and the voice of my friends. the discord audio is being captured via MasOS screen capture. I’m just wondering what steps I can take to make the chat audio sync with my webcam etc.

To help resolve your issue, we need to view a log file. Follow these instructions to upload your current log file:

1. In OBS Studio, click the Help menu → Log Files → Upload Current Log File
2. Click the Copy URL button
3. Paste the URL into this Discord channel

This is a good question actually. Since MacOS Screen Capture is the equivalent of Game Capture for Windows, does Roblox still block it?

I don't think so. It's not really an equivalent afaik. The issue with game capture is that it hooks into the rendering, which can be used to carry cheats. Afaik screen capture does not do that.
